Intermeccanica Griffith 600 GT / Omega GT, 1966/67. An American-Italian hybrid developed by designers Robert Cumberford and Franco Scallone, produced in New York in the workshop of Jack Griffith powered by a 235hp 4.5-litre Plymouth Commando V8. In 1966, Griffith sold 14 units but, facing bankruptcy, sold the project to Steve Weidler who renamed the car Omega GT. Production moved to the Holman-Moody workshop in North Carolina using bodywork made in Turin, now powered by a 271hp Ford 4.7-litre V8. Weidler made 33 Omega GTs but his venture also ended in bankruptcy. Finally Intermeccanica took over the project and created the one-off Intermeccanica Italia on the basis of the Omega GT

BAG Spatz, 1956. Created Harald Friedrich using designs by 77 year-old ex-Tatra engineer, Dr. Hans Ledwinka based on earlier plans by fibreglass pioneer Egon Brutsch, the BAG Spatz was powered by a single cylinder 191cc Messerschmitt (Fichtel & Sachs) motorcycle engine. The car was presented at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show and Bayerische Autowerke GmbH (BAG) began production but a lawsuit from Egon Brutsch, claiming corruption of his design, and the car’s propensity to burst into flames meant Friedrich sold the rights. Mirco car maker Victoria carried on production and in total 589 were built before production ended in May 1957. Apparently 24 remain intact

Tatra T2-603, 1962. Powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled 2.5 litre V8 engine, Tatras were mostly used by high-level politicians and factory bosses in communist-era Czechoslovakia and other eastern bloc countries. The 603 had been developed in secret as Soviet planning had decreed that luxury cars could only be made in Russia. However the Czech government were unhappy with the supply and standard of the Russian vehicles so ordered Tatra to make a car suitable for ministerial use, legitimating the work they had been doing under cover. The 603 was ready by 1956 and remained in production through 3 series until 1975. Interestingly when cars were traded in for a new one they were sent back to the factory and rebuilt in the latest specifications so many series 1 & 2 cars were “upgraded” to T3 specs including 4-wheel disc brakes and contactless ignition

Tatra T 603 NP, 1962. The Bratislava division also created a prototype pick-up truck based on the same configuration as the T 603 MB microbus with an air-cooled V8 engine driving the front wheels positioned directly behind them. Like the MB it never progressed beyond prototype stage
