Yang’s arc has been set up beautifully, and I can’t wait to watch how it unfolds. Volume 7 showed us how much she’d grown into her own: she doesn’t simply “go with the flow” anymore, she asks questions, she forms opinions, she makes decisions. As I said in this post, she is a true Huntress now.
So it’s no wonder she aligns herself with the Happy Huntresses in that tense conversation on what to do next. Acting to protect people against Grimms has always been the point, and the responsibility, of Hunters and Huntresses. Yang has become a very, very good Huntress: she’s skilled and strong and smart, and she cares about doing her job.
The fact that she has spent volume 7 gently questioning Ruby’s choices - not in an antagonistic way, which, again, is evidence of her growth, but in a very honest, straight-forward, mature way - makes that disagreement between them unavoidable, and fascinating. She trusts Ruby, but she trusts herself too. That means she listens to Ruby’s arguments, calmly (or as calm as you can be under such immense pressure) but she needs to be convinced if she’s going to follow Ruby’s lead again. She isn’t opposed to the Amity Arena plan on principle! She doesn’t think it’s a morally wrong choice! She listens to Ruby AND Pietro! But she reaches the conclusion that it can’t be done, she has her own priorities, and she makes up her mind. And it’s SO SATISFYING to watch!
I’m not saying Yang’s right or wrong in her assessment - all the characters make great points in that scene. I’m only talking about Yang’s characterization, and how interesting it is. All that set up. all that growth is about to pay off and I am so here for it.
