Had he been getting too defensive for a moment? Yes, definitely. A human such as her, or anyone had not invaded his private chamber’s like that, and he had been ready to snap, but heading her arguments, he calmed down again
Everything was per usual, she was not there to snoop around.
————– ❝I have this suit, an overcoat for bad weather, my robe for tutoring and that’s it.❞
————– ❝Why would I need more than that? Besides, it is how my master prefers seeing me, I would rather not surprise him with a change.❞
Yes he would, but it sounded like a good reasoning for a butler. Actually, Sebastian enjoyed dressing up and assuming new roles more than anything. If the woman looked closer, she would be able to find a doctor’s outift as well, which’s existence would be hard to explain, but so would the unicorn and Laertes costumes…..
He hoped she would not look closer.
————– ❝Miss Nina, if this visit is being made to persuade me, please, let us talk elsewhere, my humble abode is no place for a lady, or any visit for that matter…….❞
“ Everyone needs more than just that. “
Not surprise his master with a change? She kind of couldn’t imagine any bad reaction from the young Earl. Maybe because he always responded rather positive to her?
Maybe she just wanted to play around with Sebastian and dress him up? With that stubborness to stick to his usual attire, it was just somewhat... intruiging? She knows, her outfits definitely would clash with this butler’s opinion. They already usually fought over the Earl’s attire.
“ Oh? Trying to get me out of your room? Well... that’s fair I suppose. I’m not too keen to spend too long around the servant chambers. “
She turned around, and steps quickly carried her out of the room. Fast to get out of there, just as fast as she got in there. She might be a cruious lady, but staying in a room of a man too long? No, that’s not her style. Nina saw what she had to see.

“ You’re such a good and thoughtful girl... “
So it really is about the Phantomhive child. It surely must be... hard for the lady. Hard to fall for someone who’s hand has been promised to someone else. And who was Nina to put in her own opinion on that?
“ Don’t think of yourself as plain and simple. Every woman is special in her own way. You might not be the same as lady Elizabeth, but who is to say there isn’t anything about you? Don’t compare yourself to someone else, be the best you there is! ... If someone doesn’t fall for you while you’d be wolling to sacrifice so much for them... well, their loss, I’d say. “
“I know that I strongly want to be Ciel’s reason to have true happiness and to always brighten his day with a gentle smile, but there is nothing that I can do or even offer to him which can match what Lady Midford certainly can afford over an plain and simple commoner girl like me. His entire future and his entire life is why I am willing to carry the burden of regret to my grave; so long as his fortune is protected and spared.”
Such words perhaps made Hana look as if she was willing to accept some cruel fate at the cost of being happy like her father wanted so desperately, but really having gone through so much pain and various levels of abuse made her wanting to selflessly spare anyone from sharing that life with her.

"Miss. Hopkins, have you ever been in love with someone despite the fact that you want them to be happy with whoever they are meant to be with?" ((Hana))
How curious. Were the things Nina picked up on recently really true? “ No, I’ve not... had such a thing in my life... but then again, I am practically married to my work. “ Looking at Hana, the tailor slightly tilted her head to the side.
“ Sometimes they’re not meant to be but simply don’t oppose to the thought of it. Everyone does mistakes in their young age, and when they grow older they get frustrated about past decisions ...
What you have to ask yourself should be rather... do you want to see them be just happy because you’re convinced that is the right choice... or do you want to be the reason for their happiness and always be able to brighten their day? “

Ciel listened to her explanation closely, not because he was particularly interested in fashion, but because he took her for an expert and felt curious about her input. He wondered whether the clothes she tailored for him were more of an adult kind, or still part of the children’s fashion. He knew that his trousers had grown longer and there were fewer sailor collars and ribbons in his daily outfits, but it was difficult to tell whether that was due to changing trends or because of his aging.
“I see,” Ciel said simply and took a quick look at her as she worked. She was a bohemian eccentric for sure, but he did not hate the sense of rebellion about her - it was just that he did not want to become a mannequin of hers and flaunt whatever new invention she made fashion-wise, but he could still respect her passion.
“I didn’t know you are responsible of your own clothing as well,” Ciel said even though it was obvious. It was not like she was a doctor and therefore unable to help herself. She had mentioned it several times, often being just slightly intrusive towards whoever happened to question her choices - which was mostly eiter conservative elderly or flustered young men. Ciel did not like admitting it, but at times he was not sure waht to do with the flash of thighs and cleavage but to stare.
He crossed his ankles under the table and kept his eyes on the patterns and the fabric that were slowly coming together, forming something wearable once more.
“I take that the style you dislike is mature clothing,” he said, simply assuming so by the tone of her voice. “Or clothes that are too…” Modest? Old-fashioned? “Uncreative.” The tiniest smile tugged at his lips without him even noticing. “I’m looking forward to finding out what kind of breakthrough you can make to demolish the current trends, Miss Hopkins.”
“ I simply have to represent my work as well! You wouldn’t want to commission a painter without knowing what kind of work he does either. And a tailor dressing badly or in someone else’s creation... well, it would hurt my credibility if I wouldn’t be pleased enough with my own work to wear it. “
Though she was sure even in his age he’d somewhat follow her reasoning. He might be young, but a very responsible young lord. Someone who had to become an adult much sooner than others. The tailor was very aware of such things. A shame, really. A cruel fate this petite child had been cursed with.
“ Well, I cannot say that it’s uncreative... but fashion should always move on. It would be boring if we all dressed like our grandmothers did. And I certainly am sure to make the world, even if only a little bit, more colourful and let my customers taste the freedom of chic but comfortable! “
A soft hum came from her, as she finally had changed a few details on the clothes and held them up. Presenting ithem now to Ciel. While she hasn’t messed yet with the colour, the other points were carefully taken care of. Reduced the pattern on the collars to blend in -- now just a detail you would notice if you come close -- and a bow which did not look much different from before, but the material certainly was thinner and lighter.
“ Let’s try this on, shall we? “

“ Oh my, aren’t you a precious gem? “ So humble and shy. Truly a lovely person, and her denying to try it on... well, it intruiged Nina more to talk her into putting it on. “ Come on, for the fun of it maybe? I surely would love to see how the dress turns out to look on a pretty lady such as yourself. “
@fashixnable continued from here
“Wha– well, I couldn’t possibly…” the nurse says amidst sheepish laughter, quickly releasing the hem of the gown she had been feeling. Her eyes suddenly finding place somewhere near the ground.
“A humble nurse like myself has no business wearing such things… dresses like this… well, they look best on ladies like yourself.”

"My apologies, but this is my private wardrobe. I did not think you'd fancy looking at plain servant's clothing for too long, Miss Nina."
“ Do not assume my standpoint in this. Plain can be lovely if the person in it looks the part. “
In other words, butler has no right to tell her what to do and what not. She’ll find to be everything her business if she wants it to be. Honestly, it might’ve been just her curiosity. Wanting to know the reason why she made every servant’s clothing in this house, except this one’s.
“ Besides, I’ve seen you wear that suit for far too long... Now i see you have a whole army of just that. “
Does this man ever wear anything other than this goddamn suit? Sure he was a butler and all.. but no variety at all? Such a shame. Really. She’d never voice it, but Nina surely would enjoy see him dressed in other ways. Even if men’s fashion wasn’t down her alley. Or men in general.
“ Why don’t you ever accept trying something other than this... terribly contrasting black? With your pale complexion earthly tones would work wonders. “

For a moment he felt strange for even asking. He would find out eventually, would he not? And Lizzy would without a doubt be happy to show him. However, her dress sounded more interesting than the outfit she was sewing together for him. It was not a matter of lack of interest in her craft, but just… thinking about wearing florals and pastels, he supposed. It suited a cute girl better.
“I see,” he said awkwardly, losing himself in her rambling as she seemed to put her vision in simple words that he was still unable to grasp. “I can’t wait to see it.”
Would he truly be able to tell the difference between the dress and her usual attire? As far as he was concerned, everything she wore consisted of ribbons and pastels and ruffles. If she had ever asked him if he had seen the dress she was wearing before or not, his answer would have been a shot in the dark.
Ciel found a nearby chair and pulled it closer, sitting down even though he had never Miss Hopkins a seat. He was a gentleman, but he had already undrestood that she might have preferred working without one, considering how she had to move around the table just to take proper measurements and readjust the patterns.
“Do you design your own clothes, Miss Hopkins?” he asked, eager to overcome his social anxiety as long as the silence between the two would not grow too thick. Trying clothes on was awkward enough as it was.
“I mean,” he stammered to correct himself, “the ones you are wearing? They don’t really remind me of the clothes you sew for me and Lady Elizabeth, if you don’t mind me saying.”
Nina eventually fell deep into her work, roaming around as she tried to adjust the clothing to Ciel’s liking without changing the concept too much. Never did she mind the silence. Actually, unless there was a fitting she always worked alone. So it wasn’t too unusual, nor too awkward. Maybe because her thoughts were enough during her tasks.
It even took a moment until the question from the boy had reached her. Eventually making her look up at him. And a little smile formed on her lips.
“ Indeed they’re my own design. Of course your designs differ... my adult-line has a more... how do i say it... Simplistic touch? It’s often more mature, something that simply would not fit a child because of the cut itself. Adult-fashion and children’s fashion are like two different worlds. “
Mature certainly was the most fitting words when it came to her own clothing as well. Not only the strong accent on her features. People certainly would say it’s outrageous that she wore shorts. A reason her dress even had a removable skirt. Can’t run around in a world that was not ready to see the legs of a woman. Though during work? Please free her from the skirt, it was much easier to move around like this.
“ Though my personal clothes are designed in my personal preference. Just like all the requests I get from my customers, I, too, have things I want and do not want when it comes to my clothing choice. “

At the moment the countess agreed to have Nina work on her, a spark within brown eyes indicated that the girl certainly was happy to be allowed to. And the young lady quickly went to work, carefully correcting the cloth Claudia had put on which was not yet fully sewn together.
Little tweaks here and there. A reason they needed the customer to come by at least once during the process of making the dress, it would suffer if even one thing was out of place. And Nina knew exactly what she had to look out for.
“ I’ll need to slim down the waist... Shorten the sleeves... ... it needs more... “
It wasn’t hard to notice that she had been studying her mother’s work for some time now. She even had practice. Mostly on assistants and her mother, though it wasn’t like she was a total amateur. Even though her movement wasn’t as fluid as the tailors. She didn’t have the long years of experiance. A bit of patience was what was needed with the young Nina in training. Though she certainly tried her best to not make any mistakes or poke the Lady with the needles.

You know, I just had the thought... if Nina ever would find out that Sebastian is a demon... she probably would not even care. She probably would not even care if Undertaker was a reaper and the grandfather of the twins or whatever freaky business there is with the Phantomhive family. She probs be like a silently judging sidecharacter, being all like ‘these Phantomhives... seriously’.

“ Simple and befitting your age? Say no more! “
Nina approached Hana, gently taking her hands and tugging her deeper into the shop she had so hesitantly entered. The tailor often was to go out of her way, learn about her clients, get to know what would fit them and what they wish for. It was what fashion was for! For personal preferences. Really, even Nina herself could not just simply lean back and wear what was appropriate, not when it in her eyes often was too ‘stuck up’ or uncomfortable.
“ You came to the right place, my dear. With your young face it’s anyways a waste to have to make you look mature. How old are you even? Thirteen? Fourteen? Fifteen? Ah, it doesn’t matter, important is that you’re still young, and I’d gladly help you with clothing that fit that age. In fact, that’s the age-range I’m mostly working for. So you’re in good hands! “
“Well, I…Um…”
Hana really didn’t have an easy time saying no when it came to doing such things regarding her appearance; especially since it brought up the fresh painful experiences and memories still buried within the young girl’s mind. If she had an actual choice about any kind of clothing, it would rather be something which made her feel more comfortable and freely able to express her inner self rather than to be someone else she really wasn’t with the elegance and nobility of what Ciel or Astre’s family wore, but what would Ciel say or would he even still want anything to do with such a simple person like her if he started to see her wearing such attire?
“U-Umm, I have one request if I was to ask you to be an tailor for me, Miss. Hopkins. I want to be able to help assist you in making the ideas and to make them look simple and befitting of my current age instead of fancy or elegant that would make me look too mature.”

Ciel grabbed a dressing gown and wrapped it around his shoulders for some personal privacy while she reworked the design. Normally the demon butler would have been there with them, either arguing about the design with her (apparently Sebastian was even more old fashioned than his master when it came to clothes) or helping him dress and undress until he would be fed up with new clothes for months. His help was also crucial, as there were body parts Ciel did not wish to show to a lady - not just the ones that went without saying, either. It had been troublesome to shield the scar on his back and the mark under his eyepatch when she hussled and bussled around him, tugging at his clothes, adding pins here and measuring tape there with no concept of personal space. She was a tailor and it was her job, but Ciel would still often feel uncomfortable and jumpy.
She was still busy with her patterns and fabrics as Ciel approached the large table everything was spread on, peering at her work. He had a lot of respect for craftsmen of all kinds, as his own hands had never thrived with anything that took a lot of skill and concentration.
“A lot of work goes into making clothes, huh,” he said, not one for small talk, but still curious to hear what she had to say. Perhaps he was also a little sorry for alway putting her through so much trouble - then again, so far no one had ridiculed him for the clothes he wore, so his nagging might have served a purpose.
He fiddled with a corner of a fabric absentmindedly and hoped that his restless fingers wound not cause more damage than they were worth.
“What is Lady Elizabeth’s dress like?” he asked. “It must be very fashionable and cute…” Like the girl herself.
“ Oh, it indeed does. But any field of work requires attention and... well, work. “
A soft chuckle from the tailor, as she looked around to find a good fabric in the same colour as to not let it stand out too much from the rest of the jacket. Some too bright, some too dark. Maybe some people would not even recognize the difference. Though, Nina always had a strong attention to detail with her work. A reason why she was popular among nobles as well.
“ Oh, Lady Elizabeth’s dress? “
She paused for a moment, brown eyes staring down at the fabric she held in her hands. Though as the moment she envisioned the dress passed, she was immediatly at it to share what she had made for his fiancée.
“ Her dress consists of pale colours, much like what I chose for your jacket, but in a rose tone. Most of it is in faint flower patterns, I have a similair, but more outstanding bow added to her side holding a white rose in the middle. Light coloured silk flows over her skirt attached to the ribbon... Her sleeves down to the elbows, wide, attached to ribbons that hold her dress. And she has a coat fitting that very dress as well, flowers run along the buttons, and it’s in pale colours as well. It’s very modern-esque and chic, even if some old details are lost in it, but that does not matter. She looks like an angel in it, truly magnificent. Oh, she was so excited to wear it for you. “

“It’s a beauty.” [[Hana]]
“ Isn’t she, dear? Oh, I’ve worked too long on the piece she’s wearing... and her hair that simply did not want to look right at all. But once beauty is recognized I see I have my work done right! “
A soft chuckle from the tailor. She had been working on making her assistant put on something from the new collection -- someone has to present it after all, and mannequins can get you only so far.
“ Well, well ~ Fair Lady, are you here because of a change of heart? Want me to work as your tailor? I promise, I already can see the cutest ideas ~ ”
