“the comment means exactly what the words say,” she gave him a reassuring grin, “if one has interest in something more then he has not made it known, though i am not bothered too much for i am content with the life i live,” she soothed with a small nod. “then yes let us see these stalls and see what we can gain from the remainder of the fete for i am sure it wont be long until someone starts to depart and the rest follow like a herd of sheep.”
He nodded slowly, taking a moment to think before regaining his composed smile. “I think that is an excellent ethos to live by.” He replied, smiling more so in respond. “I imagine you are right, I feel many are growing wiry, and perhaps we are reaching the end of the event -- I doubt anyone will notice if we slip away.”

she gave him a half smile, his words were true the right man had not come along yet or at least not made himself known yet. “i think you might be right, or at least if he has he hasn’t made himself known which is foolish of him,” she huffed with a small shake of her head. “that is true, who cares indeed. i do take joy in the quiet moments of my life and i do get to live a little through others like yourself,” she teased lightly. “then we shall change the subject to anything you wish my lord, and i beg of you please change the subject.”
He raised his brows in her direction, curious to the comment she spoke. “Does such comments mean a man of interest has arrived? But he does not see you?” He queries, interested to know of her hearts desires. He notices the tone has changed, and thus changes the subject. “Well, if you would be so kind, I would like it if you joined me for a venture, perhaps we can see what stalls are still there to peruse?”

prim could feel a small blush crossing over her cheeks at his words, she hadn’t meant to make it feel like such a thing but for him to state it on his own wasn’t unpleasant to hear. “it’s a date,” she echoed back softly. “it wouldn’t be unreachable if the right one were to come along i should think but for now there has been none that has made me change my mind yet,” giving him a thankful smile at his words she felt her shoulders relax, “though perhaps that day isn’t too far away,” her voice soft as she mused her thoughts aloud.“
He smiled at her confirmation, nodding softly in response. “Maybe the right man has not come along yet.” He mused, lowering his head a little, maybe a little disheartened at such a comment. “I am sure the time will come -- and if it doesn’t , who cares?” He chuckled a little with a sigh. “Such talks of marriage is rather -- depressing, as I feel I will end up in it merely for convenience.”

“you tell me when you are free and we shall figure something out for i do enjoy your company,” she confessed with a soft smile, he was easy to be around and one of the few she felt as though she could be honest with. “honest answer?” with a nod she clasped her hands together and let out a small sigh, “i never truly wished to take part in the whole marriage of it all, i am quite content with my shop and i refuse to give it up like any man would expect and there has no one that has really caught my attention like i want them too yet,” she explained with a small wince.
He nodded lightly, a smile raising to his features, in which he could not contain. He was happy in her company, it was easy to see he was in awe of her slightly, not that he would kindly admit such things. “It’s a date.” He confirmed with a smirk on his lips. The tone of the conversation turned, and he frowned slightly. “I am sorry marriage seems unreachable -- though a man should not prohibit you from continuing your goals and dreams.” He reminded her, eyes locking with hers as he did.

“ahh, though do not be disheartened for there can always be another picnic delievered to you with no bidding necessary,” she soothed with a small tilt of her head. “it would be if i haven’t been dodging them left, right and centre,” primrose shot back with a mischievous grin.
he scoffed slightly, a smile raising to his lips. such as prospect was flattering and he was keen to spend more time with her. “i am going to hold you to that.” he remarked with an amused smirk. “why are you dodging them?” he inquired with an intuitive glance.

“i do hope that you are enjoying yourself,” the bookshop owner stated as she came close to owen’s side with a small grin on her face. she had heard the bids placed upon her basket and was surprised at the names listed. “it’s a shame that we are only just now crossing paths.”
he had been unsuccessful at retrieving the winning bid, much to his dismay. however, he was happy to spend time with her, and thus would savour such company. “i am doing my best, though i am disheartened to not have won your basket.” he pouted , in a teasing manner. “i imagine your day is preoccupied with suitors?”

ask meme: [ embrace ] — sender jumps into receiver’s arms for - @ofprimrose
The evening had been sublime, his attention drawn to a mixture of ladies of the ton, but his company with her had been his main attention. They had danced, and spent time conversing and getting to know each other. He was appreciative of the company, to be able to indulge and get to know her on a more intimate level. They danced, his hands moving to spin her slightly before she jumped into his arms. Gentle arms cradle her, a laugh leaving his lips as he gently lowered her to the ground, hands moving to hold her waist gently. ❝ Easy -- I intend to sweep you off your feet , but in the right way. ❞

she was simply just happy to be with him again, she had never wanted to leave, but her marriage called for it. ❝ surely, owen, you have more to tell than that ? ❞ she goaded softly, ❝ well, i suppose the children overpowered their governess and woke me this morning. ❞ she begins, and if anything, she much adored being woken to the sounds of her little darlings. ❝ we broke our fast and then the children had their lessons and i headed to the boutique, i’m afraid it’s much a bore from then on out. ❞
he felt at bliss with her, feeling at ease in her company. it was like old times, and he was truly thankful she was home with him. ❝ i am truly sorry that my life is not as thrilling as yours. ❞ he teased , a smirk on his lips as he gently squeezed her hand. ❝ are your children settling in alright? ❞ he did not know what it was like to have a child , but he imagined it was both lovely but challenging.

perhaps it were comical timing, his knocking breaking her movements throughout the foyer as she gathered a lonely pair of gloves to slide into her reticule for the day, she wasn’t expecting anyone, the children out with their governess, leaving her with plenty of time to head into the town in search of some new decorative pieces to place around the home. she doesn’t move for a moment, simply staring in the doorway for a moment, wondering who it might be before she’s headed towards it. she doesn’t expect it to be owen, though with eyes catch sight, cheeks almost ache with the spread of a smile across them, her heart aflutter in her chest that she can’t control, almost as if it were trying to break free of it’s bone cage. ❝ owen ! ❞ she can’t help but exclaim happily, though she’s cut off by his rushed words, almost so rushed that she doesn’t even have the chance to invite him in.
❝ is everything alright ? ❞ she can’t help but question him, worry marring soft features as she pulls the door behind her, stepping out into the landing, of course, gloves now forgotten on the table inside and her focus solely on the man in front of her. had it not been for owen, she sometimes wonders if returning was a good idea, but she wanted something for her children that they wouldn’t get where they were, the ton had always been home, she had friends here, her family was still here, with the loss of her husband, she had never really felt at home with him gone and but she often forgets how overwhelming things can be here. ❝ what is it you want to discuss ? are you alright ? has something happened ? ❞ she babbles quickly, favouring to wrap her arm around his without a thought past her missing him.
he did not know how to explain himself , his reasons coming out of the dark and causing confusion for himself. he wanted to bite the bullet and tell her how he feels , but he knows it is not that simple , for the years he had spent loving her , he had not told a soul. instead , he merely pretended he was alright with her love for another, watching her bare a life for herself when he was left wishing he was in her husbands place. he did not marry or move on , he did not have children, he had based his life of remaining in love with her and not moving on with his life. he wishes things were different but there is nothing he can do now except live with his regret.
eyes move to meet hers , she is as beautiful as ever , he wants to treat her, sweep her off her feet , but it is frowned upon. he wants things to be done right and this meant holding out a little longer. ❝ lovely to see you as ever. ❞ he responded, head tilting a little as his hand signalled the way. her nervous rambling was not new to him , he reaches out of her hand and gently squeezes it, eyes filled with reassurance. ❝ nothing bad has happened , i just wished to speak with you. ❞ he remained silent for a moment. ❝ i have never been forthcoming about my feelings , but i would be lying if i said my heart does not skip a beat around you. ❞

he was afraid , he needed encouragement, an oust of confidence to allow him to do what her sought to do. she was the one that got away , many years ago , and he had blamed himself ever since. the day his best friend had asked his advice, he had pushed them together, when truthfully, he wished to say his heart remained with her all along. for a long time, he had sacrificed his own happiness for others , and this was a lead to his own self betrayal and sabotage. he had never found love since then , not that he had truly been looking for such things. his eye had remained with her, and he had distanced himself to protect his heart. hearing of her marriage, of her bearing children, it had been too much to bare, and thus he had gone quiet on her. he knew this was not fair, but he had to do it for his own sanity. things were different now , her return had only spurred more doubts in his mind. he wanted to believe they had a fresh start, one of which he could see their friendship blossom. but in truth, he did not wish for friendship , he wishes he could say what he had wanted to say for many years, but it were not that simple.
he had found himself outside of her home, silent and pacing, deciding on his next move. he wanted to invite her on a date, court her , the things he should have done long ago. however, he did not wish to taint the friendship they held if her feelings did not remain with him. minutes of deliberation, and owen found some courage , wiping his sweaty palms down his trousers before knocking on the door. an exhale , gasp of sorts , left his lips as he prepared for her to appear in front of him. as she did, he exhaled, this time in awe of her. as always, she remained perfect in his eyes, as a work of art appeared , he admired her.
❝ will you please join me on a walk? i have something i wish to discuss with you. ❞

her fingers entwine with his seamlessly, as if she hadn’t of left those years ago and she leans into him with ease. ❝ somehow, i quite doubt that owen, surely there is something to recount, even if it were just you saw a bee. ❞ she jests softly.
her hand in his and he was speechless, for only a moment, but for longer than intended. She knew how to cause doubts in his mind, the past of which was stolen from him. ❝ I ate, had a meeting , and then spent some time in the gardens ❞ He smirked, tilting his head. ❝ Tell me of your day , for it will be far more exciting than mine ❞

“now that good sir would ruin the surprise would it not?” she shot back, her grin widening even further if that were truly possible. dragging him towards the nearby lake she smiled as she stood at it’s edge and took in a deep breath. “when i was younger my father would often bring me here, we would skip rocks together when the days seemed stressful,” she explained as she bent down and collected herself a rock, “it is a great way to pass time and it is soothing for the soul.”
He followed her willingly, watching the way in which she moved so elegantly, with such grace that he had to bring himself back. His eyes followed her, an amused smirk on his lips as they stopped by a nearby lake. He found the story sweet, to know this was part of a fond memory for her. “And yet - -you wish to bring me here, I do feel honoured.” He smirked, picking up a flat stone, skimming it with his finger, before throwing it across the lake, watching it skim the water three times before falling to the bottom. “I do find nature empowering, it gives me a moment to collect my thoughts.”

primrose let out the softest of giggles at his finishing words and shook her head. “if you think that i am letting you go now that i’ve got you then you are sorely mistaken, good sir,” she teased as she tugged on his arm to follow her, “we have much excitement to partake in, away we go!”
He followed her willingly, an amused grin on his lips as he did. “And where exactly are you taking me?” He spoke with an amused tone, truly intrigued to see where she was leading him.

“well then it has been decided,” she stated firmly as she glanced up towards him, her smile remaining on her lips, “the next time i am to take a day and escape the confinements of work i will be paying you a visit and be dragging you along with me.” and she meant what she said, her next free day he would be glued to her side.
“I will hold you to that.” He replied, an amused smirk on his lips. He welcomed the escape of normality, and to divulge in her company made it all the more tempting. “Why not right now?” He posed, with brows raised.

she was unafraid to take his hand in hers, no second thoughts simply an action from their childhood. ❝ terrible reasons, i’ve been gone and oh how i’ve missed you, owen ! ❞ she grinned. ❝ tell me, what is it you’ve been up to ? ❞
He did not startle at her embrace, it felt natural to them both. “I have missed you also -- and I agree, there is much to catch up on.” He smiled down at her. “I wish I had more to tell, sadly my life is uneventful.”

being subtle had never been her strong suit, she had always held a flirtatious side to her and it was something that truly never went away. “why in fact i did do some indulging, i enjoyed myself a few tasty pastries and had some tea. it was quite divine if you ask me,” she shot back, her smile and eyes wide with happiness. “oh boo, business can be quite boring. we need to get you out and about more.”
“That sounds very nice , in fact , i am rather jealous.” He teased with an amused expression. He would love to get away from it all, away from eye view and to be able to gain some peace. “You are certainly right, my life has become rather repetitive. Though, I do like to think you bring some adventure.” He smiled with a smirk raising to his lips.

❝ and i you, i’ve been so caught up in things. ❞ she stated bashfully, moving back into her parents home in mayfair on her own had been a mission, worse now with two children. ❝ i had meant to find you earlier, and i apologise for that. there is nothing you can do, but instead visit with me, it’s been awfully too long since we’ve spoken, the other night aside. ❞
He noted her distance, but did not wish to pry or intrude. He knew she had a lot on, and her life was far more complicated than his own. “I expected as much , however , i feel you have your reasons.” He smiled, tilting his head. “I know, it has certainly been too long.”
