Losing my dad has been the most life changing experience I have ever had. I’m no longer the same person I was, it’s fucked up.

Today was the first day of the spring semester for me. It was the first day of the first semester since my dad died. The first time I haven’t heard him say “Good luck, study hard.” It was harder than I thought it would be. It feels weird but normal at the same time. Maybe because my dad isn’t the first person I’ve had to grieve while in college…

He’s not even the second or third. He’s the 6th person (7th, if you include my dog that died a week before my birthday) I’ve had to grieve in my 6 years of college. He died not knowing that I changed my major, and that’s why I’ve not graduated yet. Now he won’t get to see me graduate.

I used to wonder how I was going to figure out how all my important family members would get tickets to my graduation, but at this point I’m starting to question if I would need them all.

Normally I don’t post anything here, unless it’s a reblog. But I just felt like I needed to say something.

Today’s my dad’s birthday. He’s 57, or rather he would be if he hadn’t died a little over a month ago. October 27th, 2023 was gonna be a great day for me. My driving lesson went great, a package I’ve been waiting for was in the mail, and just before my favorite class, I’d gotten a phone call saying I was 1 of 3 people to be considered for an amazing internship at my dream company.

But then I get the call from my mom. One that I’ve heard way too many times (6 total now, ever since February 2020). The best day ever suddenly turned into the worst.

You’d think by now I’d be used to the blanket of grief. I guess to some degree I am. But each death taints two dates in my mind for the rest of my life.

And now my dad will never see me get my license, or finally graduate college (the same college he graduated from no less), or get married, or finally land my dream job.
