"What if my friends secretly hate me?" What if they pray for you before bed? What if they hear a song come on and it makes them immediately think of you? What if when times are hard for them, they close their eyes and think of the memories they've shared with you? What if they study your face closely to see how you're feeling? What if they listen to your stories? What if they smile when you text them first? What if

Reading Mockingjay as an adult is extra devastating because. Of course the plucky teenager and her ragtag friends aren't going to sneak into a government building to kill the president with a bow and arrow. That's absolutely ridiculous. It's the kind of thing that's only possible in the kind of propaganda that Coin developed. But she's so good at it that in some ways she tricks the reader into thinking that's the kind of story this is, too--even after 3 books reminding us that pretty much everything that Katniss does the second she volunteers is manipulated by adults pulling strings to make propaganda in some form or another.

Chronic pain and illness really do skew what you consider to be normal.
I'm complaining to a friend about two separate pains I've got going on right now, pains which I would categorize as "annoying," and "distracting," and she's freaking out, like, "Go to the ER!!!!" and it's like, oh, that's right. Normal people go to the ER when it hurts to breathe.
Anyway...
(Just to clarify, I'm, like, 90% sure it's costochondritis, and I'm not actually struggling to breathe. It just feels blegh. The other pain is more distracting and potentially an issue but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it.)

One massive, legitimate way to improve as a writer or artist or in any creative endeavor really, is to become absolutely obsessed with something and to allow yourself to be weird about it. Genuinely mean this btw.

**gently grabs your face** Listen to me.
When things are hard, move toward joy. Move toward those who light you up, like little fireflies your heart. Play the music you love. Take a chance. Make plans with people you adore鈥攐ld and new. Put joy on the calendar like a goddamn holiday. (There is something to be said for making plans. I love plans. I鈥m a dork.)
When things are hard鈥攁nd god knows, the news is full of terrible鈥攆lirt with someone you care about. Make some art about it鈥攁bout everything. Bake something or cook something and if there鈥檚 too much, bring it to your neighbor. Pet a dog. Pet a cat. Find a reason to be silly. Be silly.
The brightest parts of my life, lately, have been unexpected magick. It鈥檚 there if you look, I promise. And, honestly, sometimes even if you鈥檙e not looking and you just run headlong into it.聽It's the connection and the love that will help see us through the hard stuff. It's the affection that feeds our strength.
