Family Chiropractic wants to be YOUR CHOICE for St. Petersburg chiropractic care! Chiropractic has come a long way… In 1895, Daniel David Palmer, the father of modern chiropractic, performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a patient of his who had lost his hearing after a back injury some 17 years earlier. The patient reported that after Dr. Palmer adjusted a vertebra in his upper back, some of his hearing returned. In its infancy, chiropractic was considered part philosophy, part art, and part science. Although the practice had been around for hundreds of years, no one – before Palmer, that is – had drawn connections between the how and why of spinal manipulation. For the next 120+ years, chiropractic care has grown and evolved into what it is today: a worldwide, recognized treatment for all types of skeletal pain and disorders, and an alternative method of treatment for many other conditions. Where It All Begins At Family Chiropractic Plus in St. Petersburg, we are committed to nothing less than the best for our valued patients, which begins with a phenomenal staff! Dr. Martin Blankenship, DC, who has been practicing in England, Ireland and Australia for over 20 years, has returned to the US to provide St. Petersburg with the amazing chiropractic care that its residents deserve! His personal experience with the healing powers of chiropractic changed the course of his career, bringing a caring, thorough individual into this field. Dr. Kaysie Blankenship-Powers, DC, also uses her prior experience with an ankle injury to educate patients on the importance of taking care of themselves through exercise, nutrition and chiropractic services. She practiced in Jacksonville, Florida for 15 years, but now we are happy that she calls St. Petersburg home! In addition to our doctors, the rest of our team is dedicated to helping you feel better, too! These great people will be responsible for administering your pre- and post-adjustment physiotherapy modalities in ...

Innate Intelligence
“Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies.  Our own inner intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside.”
This is this quote that clearly defines chiropractic.  “The power that made the body, heals the body, it happens no other way” is another quote that sums up innate intelligence.  Innate Intelligence is often misunderstood.  The entire premise and philosophy that is the very foundation of chiropractic states that there is an innate intelligence inherent within us all.  It is that intelligence that can take one tiny cell and create an 8-pound baby.  It is the same intelligence that automatically regulates our blood pressure, our breathing, pumps our heart about 100,000 times a day, and manages the simple-yet-profound healing of cuts, bruises, fractures and more.  It is that same intelligence that we often call intuition, as it is responsible for directing our movements, and often our choices.
Let’s look at a few examples:
 ·         It’s hot (external environment), because of the heat, your body temperature begins to rise in response (internal environment).  To adapt to the changes and lower body temperature into the normal range, you begin to sweat, this cools the body.  The same occurs if it is very cold, your body begins to shiver to raise your body temperature.
 ·       When you break a bone?  Once the bone is set in a cast, does that mean it’s healed?  Absolutely not.  The body needs time to lay down new bone cells until healing is complete.  The same thing occurs when you have a nasty cut.  Once the cut has been cleaned and stitched, the body needs time to repair the tissue.
 ·         When you get a bacteria or virus; how does your body fight it?  Most viruses can only live in a very specific temperature range and your body’s innate intelligence knows this.  To kill the virus, your body raises the core temperature (fever) and the virus dies. There are many more parts of the immune system involved in fighting a virus.  But once the infection is abolished, temperature will return to normal.
Researchers have identified that only 5.5 grams of pressure (the weight of a quarter) reduces your nerves function up to 60%!  Virtually every nerve passes up the spinal cord to your brain and then back down the spinal cord to your body.
The spinal column is made up of 24 moving vertebrae.  When the vertebrae are in the accurate position and are moving as they should, they protect the delicate nerves that pass through without interference.  But if the joints between the vertebrae are not moving correctly, or they’re out of alignment, then it causes inflammation in that area.  The inflammation creates pressure on the nerves.  If the pressure is not alleviated, the areas of the body that the nerve supplies will suffer because innate intelligence in your brain cannot navigate the specific nerve pathway correctly.
Why is this important?  This innate intelligence is expressed in our bodies via our nerves!  It’s our nervous system that communicates with our muscles, allowing movement, or our gut allowing digestion to occur.  Our nerves allow sugars to be turned into fuel, our immune function to regulate the body, and everything else that occurs within us.  Yes, everything.  There is no process in our bodies that is not directly controlled and organized by our immune system.
The ultimate role of chiropractic care is to enable the nervous system, freeing the spine and nerves, allowing the innate intelligence to function optimally.  This is realized through an ease in the body, and a greater expression of one’s self.  With this ease and freedom, the body’s remarkable self-healing properties function optimally and we as beings get to enjoy the life we were put on earth to express.

Chiropractic for Pinched Nerves

If you have been told that you have a "pinched nerve" it is very important that you seek professional care from a doctor of chiropractic as soon as possible.
When nerves become ‘pinched', injury, spasm and inflammation of the surrounding muscles causes the nerve to become compressed.  This results in the areas or organs that that nerve controls to not function at their optimum.  If these nerves were from your low back (lumbar) they could be affecting your intestines, bladder or sexual organs.  These problems usually arrive before pain ever becomes present.  Most people unfortunately wait for the pain to arrive before they ever address these problems.
The term "pinched nerve" is somewhat of a catch-all phrase that is commonly used to describe the pain associated with a variety of conditions from subluxations, to tunnel syndromes to the referred pain from trigger points.
Most of the time what is called a pinched nerve is an irritated, or inflamed nerve.  The nerve is not actually pinched.  In most cases, nerves become irritated and inflamed when the bones, joints or muscles of the spine are not in their proper position or are not moving correctly.  This condition is called a "subluxation," the treatment of which is the specialty of a doctor of chiropractic.
There are instances when nerves do become ‘pinched,' such as in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatica and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.  In each of these cases, injury, spasm or inflammation of the surrounding muscles and connective tissue causes the nerve to become compressed, resulting in pain.  These conditions are referred to as "tunnel syndromes."  Treating tunnel syndromes is more complex than treating a simple spinal subluxation but they respond very well to chiropractic care; especially when combined with other physical therapies such as exercises, massage therapy, nutrition and stretches.
Trigger points are very tight "knots" of muscle that form when muscles are either chronically overworked or injured, and are often experienced as a pinching or burning pain.  Trigger points commonly cause pain that refers to other parts of the body which can be called referred pain.  The successful treatment of trigger points usually requires a combination of chiropractic care, massage, stretching and trigger point therapy.
It is very important that the cause of any form of pain be properly diagnosed.  This is especially important when nerves are affected as severe or long term irritation or compression of a nerve can lead to permanent nerve damage.  If you have been told that you have a "pinched nerve" it is very important that you seek professional care from a doctor of chiropractic as soon as possible.

Visit us at www.familychiroplus.com Chiropractic and Eating to Decrease Inflammation Just like a beautiful sports car, to get your body functioning at its optimum, you need to put in the right fuel! Fuel your family with the right diet their bodies are designed for If we eat consistently with our genetic requirements we will not experience excessive inflammation (&/or many other chronic illnesses and diseases.)  Inflammation is a natural physiological response and is necessary for short term healing.  However, due to the toxic nature of processed foods we eat and other negative lifestyle choices (i.e. smoking, alcohol) many of us are inflamed and this could be the root of many of the symptoms that are associated with most chronic illnesses, as well as pain.   The positive conclusion to this story is that some dietary modifications could have a significant impact on your recovery time and the expected outcome. The following information is designed to guide you and hopefully help you make better dietary decisions through-out your life and particularly while recovering from a chronic illness or accident. FATS - Fats should not be avoided.  Eat plenty of high-quality fats as they are essential to the proper functioning of our body, especially our brain.  Omega-3 rich foods and quality sources of saturated fats and cholesterol (yes you read that correctly) are essential. EAT   Fish   Nuts & Seeds (e.g. Walnuts)   Grass fed and finished Beef and Lamb   Cold Pressed Olive Oil (not heated)   Cold Pressed Coconut Oil and MCT oil   Coconut Milk   Grass fed Butter (any from New Zealand) Ghee AVOID   Canola Oil   Vegetable Oil   Rice Bran Oil   Any industrial seed oils   Margarine   Hydrogenated oils or transfats   FRUITS & VEGETABLES - Some fruits are particularly rich in enzymes that help decrease inflammation, such as bromelain (pineapple) and papain (papaya).  Whole fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and phyto-chemicals.  They promote an alkaline environment in the body which does not stimulate inflammation. EAT   Pineapple   Papaya   Kiwi   Berries (preferably organic because of heavy pesticide use)   Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel sprouts Cabbage, Kale, Chard, Bok Choy, Spinach Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Winter Squash Zucchini and all Summer Squashes AVOID Soy   Corn   White Potato   Grains   PROTEIN - Free range meats, game meats and fish are very high in Omega-3 fats. Although poultry is not as high in Omega-3 it is still a great source of quality protein when produced in a natural manner and does not promote inflammation.  Whereas grain fed meats are high in Omega-6, they are loaded with antibiotic residues and growth hormones.  Farm-raised fish are often high in antibiotics, genetically modified, fed on soy and artificially dyed to enhance color (i.e. Salmon are dyed orange as they are naturally grey when farmed.) EAT   Game Meats   Free Range Meats   Wild Caught Fish Free Range Eggs Free Range Poultry AVOID Grain Fed & Feed Lot Beef, Pork and Chicken   Farm Raised Fish   Something to consider for Monday! Happy Monday from Family Chiropractic Plus, St Petersburg Fl.

Chiropractic Tips for Optimum Health
Chiropractic Tips for Optimum Health
Dr. Martin Blankenship, an expert in wellness, shares his tips to achieve optimum overall health (physically and mentally).  To look and feel your best for life, take the doc’s advice and start putting these tips into action today.
1.      Don’t punish yourself through “Diet”, form “Health Choices.”  Instead, by creating a lifestyle around healthy choices and daily habits you will reduce your risk of disease and increase your quality of life.
2.      Make every health choice based on what your body (as a Homo-Sapien) genetically requires to express health.  Learn to listen to what YOUR body needs.
3.      Eat real food that is as fresh as possible and the highest quality you can budget for.  Aim to increase your intake of vegetables, especially raw ones.  Eliminate as much processed, junk and fast food as possible and drink at least 2L of water a day.
4.      SLEEP!  Get plenty of sleep (7-9 hours/day.)  Sleep reduces stress levels, helps maintain healthy weight, sharpens attention, improves memory and allows the body to heal and repair (e.g. heart and blood vessels.)
5.      Move every day, multiple times a day.  Many people today sit during their daily commute, sit all day at work, sit in front of the TV and sit some more at their home computers.  Our bodies are not built for sitting all day long.   Sitting for prolonged periods of time decreases your life expectancy.
6.      Undertake a minimum of two sessions per week of exercise or weight training.  Not only will you increase your strength and fitness, have a healthier heart and more energy daily but these movements elicit important hormone responses.  This includes activating cortisol and insulin and therefore reducing stress and risk of diabetes/obesity, respectively.
7.      Practice mindfulness (prayer, meditation, imagery, etc.) and employ an attitude of gratitude.  Try a gratitude journal such as Grid Diary.
8.      Contribute to something larger than yourself, find YOUR purpose.
9.      Cultivate and foster healthy relationships.  Try to remove yourself as much as possible from toxic friendships and relationships.
10.  Ensure your spine and nervous system are clear and connected.  Make Family Chiropractic Plus, St Petersburg, Fl. Your number one choice in health care.  Call us or drop in at 3862 Central Ave, St Petersburg and meet our diverse team with Dr. Martin K Blankenship (Principle Chiropractic Physician), Dr. Kaysie Blankenship-Powers (Chiropractic Nutrition), Louise Blankenship (Practice Manager) and Ayla Bear (Sausage Dog/Mascot).  We love visitors!

Chiropractic Treatment for Joint Pain
Visit us at www.familychiroplus.com
Many patients present to our chiropractic office with joint pain and problems in the upper and lower extremities.  Examination and treatment of shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles is common in our practice.  Joints of the extremities are evaluated for mechanics, stability and the extent of tissue injury. Radiographs (x-rays) are used when needed.
Treatment typically consists of some combination of chiropractic extremity adjusting, stretching, strengthening, therapeutics (heat, ice, etc.) and maintenance.  Very often joint pain is a consequence of postural stress, structural imbalance and poor body mechanics.  When this is the case, we treat the cause of these larger issues as well as the specific area of joint pain.
