“it’s no rush, i know you’re busy,” min started as he turned the monitor slightly so they both could see the song he had in mind. “but i think it’d be cool to have you guys featuring on the next mixtape i put out, whenever i do end up releasing it.” he shrugged, knowing that he wasn’t doing the best job explaining his idea to get yuji and jieun to feature on different songs he thought would suit them well – but then again, he also knew that pitching it to them when either of them came into the studio after he had pulled another all nighter for no real season wasn’t helping him out. “i can show you other songs i think are gonna end up on it if you want to see those instead, but i just think it would sound great to have you on this one.”

“what? she would still have wes too. he cries a lot but he could help with them,” he laughed as he watched yein flip the E without mentioning it. min knew that it was ridiculous for him to actually criticize anyone for crying too much, but that wasn’t gonna stop him from thinking it was just a little bit funny to say it coming from him. “you say that like the three of us were the ones brought in to help replace you and haena,” he didn’t hesitate to use the makeshift 3 into l3thal. he figured yein knew exactly where he was going to go with that one, but he also knew it was partially yein cutting him slack again as he ran out of ideas for english words. “yeah, i like play more too. i know i’m biased but still,” he said sheepishly, “i still would’ve written something a little more for my verse. maybe if we ever do perform it together i’ll do something more.”
“so are you gonna leave new age to come hang out with all of us at higher now?” minseok joked, glancing over at yein from across the coffee table in their living room they had spread a scrabble board across. the board game had been yein’s idea, and even though min agreed to make himself practice english words, he kept sneaking in korean ones and hoping she didn’t notice. “ice cream is great, it’s cool seeing you and haena doing stages with reign again,” min said as he tried to sneak using an upside-down E for l3thal, “i think i have to like play better though, even if you tricked me into being on it.”

“yeah, you don’t think my mostly straight guy fans would be upset by me having a girlfriend still?” min knew andrew had a point that his offer had been pretty useless, but he was still willing to offer to make a fool out of himself just to take the heat off of a grown man for having a baby. “listen, you were the one who mentioned the place burning down. the last time i actually got dragged was for fighting, not arson, but if you wanna implicate hyosang instead that’s on you.”
falseprvphet:
“i mean, if you want someone else to get in another scandal as a distraction just let me know,” minseok laughed along with him. it was clear from his tone of voice that he was joking; they both knew it had been years since his name had been mentioned negatively because of something he had said in any article headline, and sometimes that felt like it was almost about a different person entirely at this point. really min was just excited to see andrew, and gabriel of course. he couldn’t imagine what it must be like for andrew to be a new dad all over again, but to minseok andrew and lucy having gabriel as the newest addition to andrew’s kids just made sense.
“it’s still a couple years until yein and i can have kids though,” min added, which was a thought that he’d have to admit was rarely far from his mind. enlist, get engaged, get married, have kids was always the plan he and yein had decided on – it was just his plan now to switch the second to happening before he went to the military. “so if you’re still holding out for someone to burn the building down i guess i’m your guy.”
“oh? you going to go public with your already-public relationship to get the heat off me?” andrew retorted with a laugh. at this point, he wasn’t sure what sort of genuine trouble l3thal’s artists could possibly get into. none of them were the conventional idol type– though, maybe someone would write a scathing exposé about the crew wasting power and energy by pulling only night shifts, or something. “really? you never were someone i took as the pyromaniac type. and if i was going to place bets on anyone burning the place down accidentally, i’d wager hyosang over you, i think.”

min tilted his head as she explained her worry, knowing that unfortunately there was probably more than a little truth to some out of touch comedian completely tanking any interview or corner for them. “i mean,” he started, knowing that it wasn’t the best advice to give, “could you maybe clown him back? just pause after any of you guys mention each gaming thing to ask him if he’s heard of it?”
falseprvphet:
“i don’t even know, dude. i’m pretty sure higher finally started talking any publicist out of trying to put me on any of those alongside their actual soloists,” min faintly recalled being asked about his music on idol shows in the past and laughing partially just to fill air time when asked about the sales pitch of a mixtape. “maybe you guys will just end up being the most interesting by default though, if you’re the only ones not talking about a comeback or something.”
“i mean, yeah– we’ll definitely be the odd one out. i’m just kind of scared it will be in a bad way,” narae admitted with a little laugh. “like, i can just see one of those boomer comedian hosts hearing that we play video games for a living and spending the whole show clowning on that, and i already want to leave my body.”

“seriously, you’ve never been asked for music input before?” minseok asked incredulously. he could respect that she was down to do the actual work that interns were probably told to do all the time, but now that chunja had mentioned that she had been working at higher for however long now and hadn’t actually been shown any music work directly, the first option was out the window. “don’t worry, i won’t make you listen to all of these songs on my hard drive, but now you gotta help me sort out the order for a few of these.”
falseprvphet:
“oh, hey,” minseok looked up from where he was slouched over the mixing board in the l3thal studio, knowing he wasn’t the image of productivity at the moment. in his defense, he was years into knowing he was the most productive when he worked long into the night and not sitting in the studio in the middle of the afternoon, not even looking at any of his lyrics. “i mean, i could show you the super exciting pile of cables i’ve been slacking off on moving, but it feels kinda shitty to make you clean up when i should’ve done it already.” he glanced black over at his computer, deciding that asking the intern for her opinion on engagement ring options for his girlfriend wasn’t the best plan either. “you wanna help pick the track list for this mixtape? i’ve been staring it for a like week and the order still doesn’t seem right.”
“no, no. not shitty. you’re helping me get a very nice hoodie,” she insisted, hopeful for work– even if it was work that he himself was neglecting. besides, she was bomb at cable management. at the second suggestion, though, she smiled. “i’ve never been asked to help with actual like… music stuff before. besides sorting album prototypes for concept designers to go over later. that sounds really cool, actually…”

minseok didn’t question when jisung walked up to him, clearly on a mission for something. “oh hell yeah,” he said once he heard him out. if he was being honest, he wasn’t sure if he fully was picturing what the other man exactly had in mind, but he wasn’t worried about it. he was used to seeing jisung’s work and being fully on board with it even if he had no idea what to predict next. “what’s it called, line dancing? i’ll do it in the background i’m down.”
“i’m going to have a comeback soon. i don’t know how soon soon is but… it’s on the horizon,” jisung said, completely foregoing introductions, hellos, and pleasantries, and getting straight to the point. “for one of the songs, i thought it would be funny if instead of dancers i just had a bunch of out of place khh figures trying to dance. dressed as cowboys. are you interested?” @falseprvphet @shinwoorv

“I have to say, there is very little stranger than being a forty-three year old man with four children already, and getting into a pregnancy scandal,” he admitted, rubbing his hand over his face with a little laugh. It was the first time since gabe was born that he’d been back at the higher building– he was just in and out, getting some stuff so he could do some work from home while on paternity leave. but gabriel was old enough to not be a sobbing mess when away from lucille, so andrew thought he’d bring the baby along in a little carrier, so his friends at work could meet him. “seems the place hasn’t burned down in my absence, so that’s nice to see at least.”

chunja.
“you know, i should dye my hair,” chunja announced thoughtfully. “i just think it’d be fun. and it would annoy my mom, which is a bonus. plus, if people saw me going in and out of the higher building with cool hair, someone would probably think i’m an idol or a trainee and i think that’s funny”
“do it. i used to annoy yuji and hyo to shave my head whenever i got bored or something, and if i hadn’t bleached it so much over that, every now and then people would ask if it was my day off from enlistment.”

jenny.
“i know my comeback probably would’ve done better if i’d done the traditional music show circuit, but i honestly don’t know that i can bring myself to care,” jenny mused. she was proud of her album, and the two singles she’d released, but while well received, both she and siren were aware it had under-performed win-wise. “i think i’m just too old to keep up with all of it any more. like, i love my music, but brave new world promotions provided more than enough rushing between programs for this quarter. i have no idea how people manage such crazy schedules.”
“i know there’s no point in me being on them, but i’ve never wanted to be on any of those music shows. hyo thinks they’re fun but they always seem awkward as hell,” minseok didn’t bother hiding his opinions about it, but given what he probably would have said years ago about anything idol-industry related it was still way more positive than it could be. “i would’ve gotten in the way of the choreo she did and all that stuff, but they wouldn’t even let me be on yein’s stages for play because i didn’t know you guys have to get all your lyrics checked in advance and i kept changing mine.”

joonie.
“i think that’s the issue, though,” joonie answered. “like…. we do make good songs. and we’ve kind of done that without spotlight at all. we’ve survived because noah and nathan are really good at putting songs together, and the rest of us chip in every once in a while. and it’s working. but then out of nowhere, spotlight comes in and decides to change something that doesn’t need to be changed and it’s just like…………….we still don’t need your help, why are you trying to help………”
“i mean, i haven’t heard most of what you guys have done,” minseok shrugged, but he didn’t have any shame in admitting that. he hadn’t heard a lot of juno’s songs besides what they had promoted, and that was just from not paying that much attention to groups that had nothing to do with him. “but it kinda seems like there are always some people that do better when labels just leave them alone. i figured i’d never even sign with one until yuji and hyo made l3thal, but higher doesn’t seem to actually tell either of them what to do with the other songs they write for them. i know i couldn’t do it if someone tried to actually tell me how to write a song, i dunno why spotlight doesn’t take the hint that you guys don’t need the help.”

“I came across a couple of photos of myself when I was cleaning earlier from when I first arrived in Seoul. I actually don’t think I’ve seen someone try so hard to look like a badass as I did then as a teenager–it’s no wonder I got turned down all those times at auditions,” Ohkyung said with a dry chuckle.
“if it helps, sometimes see photos of myself when i was younger and even though i was already tall my clothes were somehow still gigantic on me. i don’t think anyone actually looked as cool as they thought they did.”

joonie.
“you know, i never thought i’d end up a rapper,” joonie admitted with a little laugh. with river leaving juno, nathan and joonie had ended up sharing lines that would have once been his. it was definitely a shift for the vocalist. “i don’t know if i’d want to do it forever, but it’s kind of fun for now. i’m definitely no noah, but i think i’m getting the hang of things.”
“yeah, me neither,” minseok laughed quietly, knowing that he was being a little bit of an ass to say that he hadn’t been planning on being a rapper either. he shrugged, “i dunno, i haven’t heard that much of your music but i don’t think any of you guys are bad, it seems like you and nathan do a good job regardless with the songs. you guys always seem to worry too much about what labels your given for a group when you make good songs anyway.”
