that scene in tlo where thalia tells percy he can't start feeling sorry for luke bc luke made his choices. and thalia reveals that the reason they couldn't make it to camp in time for all of them to make it to camp was bc luke kept picking fights. and annabeth never saw this as wrong bc luke was her hero. so thalia had to pick up the pieces. and percy thinking both that luke was put in a cruel position and that luke was putting others in a cruel position. and percy is the only character who understood both sides of luke bc annabeth sees only the best of him and thalia sees only the worst. and that's why percy is the prophecy kid and the one who gives luke the knife. bc annabeth had spent the entire series essentially giving luke the knife when he didn't deserve it. and thalia was never going to give luke the knife. but percy is the only one who can see exactly when luke deserves the knife.

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (2016)

Alright I have to admit it. I wasn't super looking forward to this one but I had a romp of a time.

Mostly due to THIS GUY

why did no one tell me Matt Smith was not only in this but one of my favorite versions of Collins EVER. I didn't know my ideal Collins was a foppish bisexual disaster

"We're expecting a proposal for Jane any day now" "Ohhhhhhhhhhh...fuddle. Is there no negotiating over Jane?"

"Mr Bennet I am very susceptible to flattery and you sir, are very charming."

"Oh is there trouble?" (the ladies unsheath their weapons) "Oh it appears there is."

And then he officiates the weddings at the end? "You may now kiss Mr Darcy - the brides. You may now kiss the brides" and then he watches Elizabeth and Darcy, just incredible. Watch this movie for Matt Smith, if nothing else.

But also, just a fun movie. Overdramatic? Of course. Interesting take on zombies? Check. True to canon? eeeeeehhhhhh even in the beginning it compressed a lot of conversations, and then as any good variation, went off the rails, but the important bits were there. I particularly enjoyed the moment after the proposal where Lizzy loses her temper and is throwing books and things at Darcy, who is just batting them away.

Of COURSE they had Darcy strip to a white shirt and jump in the lake. Wonderful. Yes. the data

I LOVE that Jane saved Bingley, love a strong Jane.

And adored the line "the very first moment I beheld you, my heart was irrevocably gone"

so fun.

Okay so I don’t know anything about Pride and Prejudice, okay, I’ve just seen the movie a bunch of times

But I was listening to the Queer Movie Podcast talk about « the problem of Lydia » in an episode reviewing an AU version, and it basically comes down to what her storyline should be in a modern remake. Should she still elope? Should it be a sex tape scandal? Or what?

And I was thinking well, if Mrs Bennet’s insistence for her daughters to have a good future in this modern AU is about getting high paying jobs and going to university, then obviously Lydia should get sucked into an MLM! And Whickam could just be a conman who sorts of floats from MLM to MLM and he brought her in.

She thinks she’s found the infinite money cheat and brags about being a « small business owner » to her sisters. Everyone else is like « oh no, here goes her finances and reputation! ». Mrs Bennet is hovering between « should I torpedo our social relationships by pressing every last family acquaintance to attend sale parties, or should I act like her business is blooming and she doesn’t need help to maintain face? » then Mr. Bennet goes « well it will be good for her to fail and learn a lesson » which she reacts to by going « absolutely NOT none of my girls will FAIL and besides it’s good to have entrepreneurial spirit! » so she pays for Lydia’s starter kit and starts planning sales parties and all the other daughters are like 😬😬😬 « no way mom I’m not asking my facebook friends to buy that stuff are u kidding »

And then the resolution of that whole story arc is when Elizabeth opens a cupboard at Darcy’s house and a bunch of essential oils fall out and it turns out he’s a huge pushover and Lydia has only been staying afloat because he’s been buying her stuff even though he has no idea what to do with it

(He also has a bunch of leggings from when his sister also got involved in an MLM)

My Pride & Prejudice hill I will die on is that Lydia and Elizabeth have almost the exact same character flaws, being that they’re both gossipy and judgmental and the only difference is that Elizabeth is a little more subtle about it and less boy crazy but both of those could easily be explained by her being almost six years older. They BOTH fell for Wickham’s charm and the only reason Elizabeth was spared is because Wickham chose not to pursue her, and yet Lydia is often portrayed in adaptations as this horrible audacious brat while Elizabeth is a snarky girlboss.

Wait. Do you think Caroline knew the specifics? Or just that Darcy and Wickham had had a falling out?

She doesn't know the specifics (she says so herself, and for sure none of the Bingleys know about Georgiana), but she's been given some information. This is what she says to Elizabeth before she gets distracted by snobbery:

"Your sister [Jane] has been talking to me about him [Wickham], and asking me a thousand questions; and I find that the young man forgot to tell you, among his other communications, that he was the son of old Wickham, the late Mr Darcy's steward. Let me recommend you, however, as a friend, not to give implicit confidence to all his assertions: for as to Mr Darcy's using him ill, it is perfectly false; for, on the contrary, he has been always remarkably kind to him, though George Wickham has treated Mr Darcy in a most infamous manner. I do not know the particulars, but I know very well that Mr Darcy is not in the least to blame, that he cannot bear to hear George Wickham mentioned, and that though my brother thought he could not well avoid including him in his invitation to the officers, he was excessively glad to find that he had taken himself out of the way."

Bingley also doesn't know the whole story (according to both himself and the narrator), but Darcy told him the history of Wickham and the living he was supposed to have received. Jane's information from Bingley is this:

"[Bingley] is perfectly convinced that Mr Wickham has deserved much less attention from Mr Darcy than he has received; and I am sorry to say that by his account as well as his sister's, Mr Wickham is by no means a respectable young man. I am afraid he has been very imprudent, and has deserved to lose Mr Darcy's regard."

"He [Bingley] does not exactly recollect the circumstances [of Wickham and the inheritance he was supposedly robbed of], though he has heard them from Mr Darcy more than once, but he believes that it [the living] was left to him [Wickham] conditionally only."

Bingley and Caroline seem to have fairly similar information and both tried to get warnings out in their own ways.
