Just in my character thinky thoughts but I think even as a revealed villain there's still a part of Tegan that wants Ortega to be proud of him. To focus less on the "how far I've fallen" vs "look how far I've come."

That he fought, survived, and did it alone. Being Sidestep was something he stumbled into but Retribution is all him.

Even if Ortega won't accept that, he wants him to respect it

hmmm I got a little snippet from an unnamed fic where Tegan is still broke leggies but innocent. Chen knows though and is encouraging him to tell Ortega the truth and confess.

"You need to tell him." Chen says from his spot on the couch, trapped by his own volition by the sleeping greyhound in his lap. He gently strokes Spoon's ear but he doesn't take his eyes off the man he's taking to. Tegan doesn't need to guess what he's talking about, it sits right in the forefront of the Marshal's thoughts — The fact that Ortega doesn't know he's Retribution. And Chen does. Tegan takes a drag from his cigarette before blowing the smoke out an open window. It's a compromise of sorts, no smoking in the apartment, usually, he can at least try to keep the smoke outside. "Yeah, how do you see that going?" Tegan scoffs. He rolls his wheelchair back and forth with his free hand, its not as good as pacing but its all he can do to alleviate his restlessness while his legs are still mending. "I see it going worse the longer you wait." A matter of fact. Chen's fore-thoughts mark it as the truth. The Marshal thinks he's right, that he knows the right call when he sees it. And that pisses Tegan off. "Yeah I guess you'd know huh."

aaand a tiny bit from ch4 of Family Dinners because this exchange makes me laugh. Tegan and Ortega are talking on the phone.

"¡Mierda!" Ortega's swear is sudden and almost makes Tegan jump. Not having eyes on the most unpredictable man in the world already sets his nerves on edge. "What? What is it?" "Nothing, just idiots on the road." "You drive like a maniac, are you sure its not just you?" "Hmm, this feels like it might be a glass houses moment for you." "There was a sniper Ric!"

i want to once again wax poetic about how the best thing about Fallen Hero is how the game's attention to detail wrt stats, variables, etc. works together with the unreliable narration, such that my Sidestep can be a ruthless manipulator while still having moments of vulnerability in relationships that don't feel forced or OOC

for example:

i wanted to do a run where Cyrus is fully aware of Ortega's feelings for him and lets their relationship languish in the "it's complicated" limbo with no intention to follow through. when i replayed Rebirth to establish this, i also decided to have him hug Ortega at the hospital even though i usually avoid that option for fear of having Cyrus get too genuinely emotional, too soon

but instead i got this absolutely perfect flavor text:

the narration being so cold and detached even when he's being physically affectionate. justifying it by calling it payback. the tell that he's actually hugging Ortega pretty tightly, to be hurting his ribs. like, seriously, chef's kiss

Based on Vivian's race, her circumstances would largely depend on where she was born (and to whom).

However, without The Farm and her powers, Vivian would be unrecognizable, essentially a totally different person.

I doubt she'd take the Boost drug and doubt even more that she'd become a Mod.

She'd just be a person, a normal everyday person.

I think that is the crux of things, that Vivian wants to be that person, but she was made at The Farm and does have powers and none of that can be undone or erased or forgotten.

I think that is why she both enjoys being in her puppet body, Andromeda, and mistreats her puppet body. By using a puppet she can pretend to be the normal everyday person she always wanted to be, but it is also a reminder that she is not and will not ever truely be that person.

Vivian is given that opportunity in Rebirth, to abandon her villain plans, to be a "normal" person, to rekindle her friendship/romance with Ortega, and live the life she used to dream of, all in a body that looks like her but without the scars (literal and metaphorical) of her past... And she eventually turns it down.

Vivian knows she cannot excape herself.

I think that is also why she tries to suppress Ace's powers and is deeply distressed in the routes where she discovers Ace's identity.

Even this supposed safe-haven has secrets and baggage and ties to a dark past, one that involves ReGenes. She was never Andromeda, the sweet but cheeky young woman Vivian projected onto and played out through her, she was always someone else, Ace.

It is all yet another reminder that what Vivian wants is a fantasy; Ace is a whole person who had a real life and it included all the things Vivian hoped to get away from. Vivian cannot even pretend there is another option for her, one where she is a normal person, because none of the people around her that are reflections of herself (Ace and Hollow Ground) are normal people.

If your Sidestep wasn't a Re-Gene and just another person in the fallen hero verse, what would they be like? Would they still live in Los Diablos? Potentially be a Mod or Boost? Would they still romance who they're romancing? Stuff like that.

In Rebirth Vivian is very emotion driven and focused on lashing out, hurting her legacy as a means to punish both herself and others (e.g. Ortega), but by Retribution I imagine Vivian has channeled her self-destructive urges into dismantling The Farm.

"No one should have to suffer the way I have" is a noble goal, but there is a distinct "I should not exist/should not have been born" bent to it as well.

I believe Vivian has given up on having a good life for herself, let alone a "normal" life, which is what she had originally wanted as Sidestep. This new goal gives her a way to dovetail the motivations that made her a hero, a desire to reduce the suffering of others, and the motivations that make her a villain, a desire for revenge on those who made her suffer, without giving herself any illusions of a "happy ending".

Though Vivian thinks she has become more self-serving since her days as Sidestep and more controled since her debut in Rebirth, her downfall is still often her putting others before herself and not keeping her emotions in check. Neither of these are "bad traits", but they are unbalanced in Vivian due to her upbringing, her self-image, her hero/villian work, and her powers. This results in her being reactionary rather than proactive, always thinking of herself in relation to something else, which I think will be her downfall if she does not change in Fallen Hero: Revelations.

What's the goal each of your Sisteps has that they consider most important to themselves? Could be something stated in the narrative, or it could be something specific to them.
