The mistake is his, to try and grow up too fast. To have passed judgment so surely, to turn his chin up and believe he knew the full story. Hubris.

No, in the shadow of Seto, his father, he is a mere whelp.

But like his father before him, he would protect his home. Cosmo Canyon. The Planet. Traveling with Cloud and his friends, he hopes that he can earn that title. Son of the warrior, Seto.

His heart feels so full of pride for his father’s bravery he might burst. Nanaki lifts his head from the ground, a single eye hooded against the blazing flame and the cinders of warmth that dance out, then disappear into the deep darkness of the night sky. Cloud seems lost in thought; his eyes reflect only the light of the Candle, but he supposes the human may be seeing something else entirely.

“I wish I had known the truth sooner,” Nanaki finally says, tossing his mane. The beads and bells braided into his fur chime softly with the movement, as though admonishing him. “But it was there the whole time. I just never bothered to try and find it…”

He angles his head to look up at Cloud properly. “Thank you for coming with me to the cave. My family will not fade into obscurity. I’ll make him proud. My father fought our enemies alone…but I have the help of my friends.”

Sometimes he sees things in the flames. Distinct and recognizable shapes taking form as the Cosmo Candle produces flare-like bursts of even hotter fire. The figure of a woman, her open hand reaching out from above him before flickering out into nothingness. Embers crackle and die as they’re carried by the wind. 

Secret things, hidden things- All around, alive and living. 

Everyone else had retired for the evening, but he couldn’t get the images he’d seen within the caves out of his mind. The vengeful specters of the Gi tribe still fighting a war long since lost. Seto, the great warrior, still guarding all who would call the canyon their home. He had left as asked to give Nanaki and his grandfather time to speak of the past, unable to help remembering his own complicated emotions involving his own father.

As far as he was concerned, Claudia had been the only parent he’d ever known. She’d gotten involved with an outsider, some drifter who wasn’t from the mountains. Just as quickly as they’d settled into a peaceful life together, one day he just disappeared. The other villagers were always whispering about it, casting their sidelong pitying stares for a woman who was still waiting for her husband to return.

Cloud was happy for Nanaki, being able to look back at his bloodline with pride and respect for his ancestors rather than scorn. It had been an important point of growth, something he was silently grateful to have been a part of.

All of the memories, moments experienced, and battles they had fought together seemed to stretch on endlessly, yet also felt as through much time hadn’t passed at all. If his younger self had been told he’d be traveling the world and trying to save the planet, he would have never believed it.
