Inspiration for her work
- Feminine
- Female gaze approach
- Being able to create images for young women from her own perspective as a young woman herself.
- There is a comment she made once about how when she was younger seeing images of young women made by old men so she can’t see her stories be told by anyone but herself which is really empowering and relatable.
- Her series “24 Hour Psycho” is a series of images with women in moments of emotional distress. Influence of this series comes from her own personal struggles with mental health and seeing her mother struggle with it as well. Bipolar and body dysmorphia.
- She also makes it a point in interviews or in anything to remind people how even though she gets to do cool and fun work she still hates herself and struggles and wants to make that point clear.
Interesting facts about herself
- She was good friends with Selena Gomez for a while. Selena was a big fan of her work and eventually reached out to her to work on some of her music videos.
- She was in 4 episodes of a amazon show called “Transparent” as a supporting role.
Why I chose artist
- I was initially interested in her because I like her use of color gels in some of her photographs.
- In her “24 Hour Psycho” series some of the photos were particularly moving and relatable to me.
- I think that was the biggest selling point for me too is in a nutshell she is super relatable.
- She talks a lot about her own mental health and struggles with being in front of a camera.
- Learning more about her I found a comment she made about her mother being bi-polar and it never being diagnosed and just pushed it off as “just being a woman” or “just being weak” and how she experienced similar experiences and felt her great pain was just a “dramatization”.
That story for me really resonated with me and my own mental health issues growing up with depression in a world where it was always expected of me to “toughen up” and “be a man” and just sort of bottling up all of my own emotions and issues and sort of blame myself for being a baby all the time.
The more I learned about Petra Collins as a person and an artist it made me like her own work more even if her work wasn’t was made for someone like me in mind. It speaks for how vast of audience her art could reach.
“24 Hour Psycho”
- A series of photos addressing the idea of women being “emotional” and due to that being more “inferior” and something to be managed. And comes with the approach of appropriating that idea by celebrating the emotion of women with powerful imagery of women in a moment of distress.
