10 years ago to the day, I put in my notice at the Bose store I worked at, because for some reason I was allowed to start an art career when I had almost nothing to offer.
At the time, I was 3.5 years out of college and depressed to the point of googling “most painless way to unalive yourself”. I don't know what the search results looks like these days, but the ones I got weren't within my means, so I applied for a job posting on CraigsList and said I'd circle back to Plan A when I got rejected. I didn't have any work experience, so I made my resume the big stupid thing up top there.
I don't know how much of the document constitutes as "lying". Technically I didn't lie! I was featured in the publications I listed! They were not real jobs. I don't recommend doing this unless you're a really good bullshitter and you have literally no other options in life, and even then I'd tell you that I'm an awful role model and you shouldn't do what I did.
For some reason, I was hired! Bonus: my first assignment was drawing rocket ships for Johnson & Johnson. I don't know why they'd give that to an obvious liar! But I didn't realize it was a contract/freelance hire, which, if you don't know, is a complete lifestyle change from a normal job. I decided to jump right into the world of running one's own business because Plan A seemed less attractive now.
Over the years, I've had opportunities to work with major international brands, explore a bunch of different industries I never thought to work with, collaborate with folks I looked up to for years, worked on books and games and animation and music and ads and a bunch of other stuff. I'm very fortunate to have what others have told me is a "career" but what feels like a series of silly things that have happened to or around me. Lots of people took a chance on me when they probably should've hired someone with a better head on their shoulders.
I don't use the Drawbarian resume anymore (I have work experience now!), and I don't think it represents me even a little bit, but I think self aggrandizing humor is way funnier than self depreciating humor, and that original drawing was so fucking bad that I wanted to see and enjoy my growth in something more tangible.
Plus I dunno muscle dudes are fun to draw.
