Thanks so much Sinisa - not only did this fix the issue of my iBook epubs & PDFs not showing in iTunes, BUT it also fixed an issue where my phone was not syncing with the Photos App on my Mac. Only difference for me is that under System Preferences iCloud. I turned off all the Photo settings here, including those under iCloud Options.

I do some serious PDF hoarding in the iBooks app on my iPhone. Calendars, e-books, flyers, things I loved reading and want to read again, things I want to love reading someday in the future.. it's all there in a flurry of mismatched PDF previews. It would be pretty sad to lose all my PDFs from iBooks, so today's blog post is about how to backup PDFs from iBooks.

Back in the day (circa 2014), PDF files saved to iBooks were part of a normal iPhone backup, but that is no longer the case. Since PDF files can now be synced to iBooks on your iOS device, they're now categorized as 'synced stuff' and 'synced stuff' doesn't get backed up. (If that is an interesting sentence to you, you may enjoy this post about iTunes sync vs iTunes backup.) Let me make sure I state this clearly: PDFs in iBooks are NOT backed up as part of an iPhone backup in iTunes. If you don't believe me, here's a reference :).

How to Back Up iBooks PDFs

Plug your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch in to your computer.

Open iTunes.

Open the 'File' menu, select Devices -> Transfer Purchases from Your iPhone's Name.

How to Verify the iBooks are Saved on Your Computer

Click on the iPhone icon in the upper left corner of iTunes to look at the device specific info.

Click on 'Books' in the left panel under 'Settings'.

See if all of your PDFs are now in that 'Books' section.

A few notes:

If you're using iTunes on Windows, and can't find the File menu, try pressing Ctrl+B on your keyboard to un-hide it. (The menu is no longer hidden on iTunes 12.4 and higher.)

If you're on Mac, you may need to open the iBooks app on your Mac once and login there. I needed to do this back in 2015, but I haven't gotten a new computer and needed to repeat the experiment again yet.

A few people told me that the PDFs didn't transfer until doing a second transfer purchases. So definitely verify the PDFs copied, and if not, try try again.

If you use iBooks with iCloud drive, the PDFs that are stored in iCloud drive do not transfer to your computer. We've also seen some reports (see the comments below) that the PDFs in iCloud drive may be mislabled in your iBooks app, showing they're not stored in iCloud Drive, when they really are. Update June 29, 2017 see the section below about accessing the PDFs downloaded from iCloud on macOS Sierra and higher.

Where are My iBooks PDFs Stored on my Computer?

On Windows, the iBooks PDF files copied to your iTunes by doing Transfer Purchases are stored in your computer user's account folder, alongside your iTunes music. Here's how to find your iBooks PDFs on your Windows computer:

Go into your user account's Music folder. (On Windows 10, this would show up under This PC -> Music.)

Open the folders iTunes -> iTunes Media -> Books.

You should see your PDFs in this folder.

On Mac, the iBooks PDFs copied by doing Transfer Purchases are tucked away in data for the iBooks Mac App. Here's how to find your iBooks PDFs on your Mac:

Open Finder, and select the 'Go' menu at the top of the screen. Hold the Option key (or Shift + Option on latest Sierra builds), and select the 'Library' menu option from the Go menu. (On OSX Lion and above, Library will only appear with the Option key held.)

From Library, navigate to Containers -> com.apple.BKAgentService -> Data -> Documents -> iBooks -> Books.

You should see your PDFs in this folder.

On macOS Sierra and higher, if you've signed into the macOS iBooks app, your PDFs are actually available through the iCloud Drive section of your 'Mobile Documents' folder. (It's likely already there before you ever open the iBooks app, as long as you've signed in to your iCloud account on your Mac.)

First, we need to make sure you've got iBooks turned on for your iCloud drive documents on your Mac.

From the Apple menu at the top of the screen, select System Preferences.

Select iCloud in System Preferences.

Next to iCloud Drive, press the 'Options..' button.

Ensure the iBooks checkbox is checked.

Now, the iCloud Drive container for iBooks doesn't normally show up in Finder, so we have to manually open it in Finder using Terminal.

In the Spotlight search in the upper right corner of the screen, type terminal and press enter to open the Terminal app.

In the resulting boring prompt that opens, copy and paste in this bit of text and press return/enter: open ~/Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~com~apple~iBooks

A Finder window should pop open with your iBooks pdfs, some of which may have a cloud download icon by them. This indicates that the file itself hasn't been downloaded from iCloud yet. You can click on the cloud download icon to download the PDF. If there are multiple PDFs you want to download, hold the Command key and select the not-downloaded files; then right click on one of the selected files and select 'Download'.

Don't mess too much with the contents of this iCloud Drive container; that seems unwise. If you want copies of your PDFs to muck around with, copy and paste them elsewhere on your computer in Finder.

Considering that Android and Linux share the same kernel, one might assume that it would be easy to run Android apps natively on Linux, but it isn’t. That’s because the kernel is just the core of an operating system, and it takes a lot more software than just the kernel to run the applications you interact with on a daily basis.

Furthermore, Android APK files are not straightforward executables (like .exe files on Windows). They are essentially installer packages whose purpose is to extract files to certain specific locations. When executed, the extracted files call certain functions of the Android operating system to access the file system, hardware components, and so on.

Popular Linux distributions make no effort to be compatible with Android apps, so Linux users have to simulate Android devices on their computers using Android emulators or use an operating system that’s compatible with Android apps. How to delete apps on mac desktop.

1. Anbox

Anbox is conceptually similar to Wine (a free and open-source compatibility layer that makes it possible to run Windows applications on Linux) because it abstracts hardware access and integrates Android applications with the Linux operating system.

The entire project is open source and licensed under the terms of the Apache and GPLv3 license. The goal of its developers is to make it so that every Android app and game can run on Linux. Because Anbox runs without hardware virtualization, it offers decent performance and tight integration with the host operating system.

Because Anbox is distributed exclusively as a snap (its developers claim that snaps make their lives much easier and allow them to frequently release updates without the need to customize them for multiple distributions), you can install it only on supported distributions unless you install Snap manually, which takes just a few simple commands, all of which are described in detail on Snap’s website.

2. Arc Welder

If you’re a Google Chrome user, you can run Android apps on Linux using ARC Welder, also known as App Runtime for Chrome. This Chrome extension is actually intended to let Android developers test and publish their Android Apps to Chrome OS on other platforms, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it for your personal purposes.

Because Arc Welder is a tool for developers, it doesn’t provide access to apps published in the Google Play Store. In order to run an Android app, you first need to find and download its APK file and then open the file using Arc Welder. Fortunately, there are many websites that let you easily download APK files, including APKMirror, APKPure, or APK Store.

Unfortunately, Arc Welder was last updated in June 2018, so bugs are to be expected. Still, you would be hard-pressed to find and easier way to run Android apps on Linux.

3. Genymotion

Because this is the year 2020, we can’t recommend the once-popular Android emulation solution called Shashlik anymore. 4. Android-x86

Android-x86 is a project whose aim is to port Android to the x86 instruction set. Because Android-x86 is a complete operating system, you need virtualization software like VirtualBox to run it inside your Linux distribution.

When setting up a VirtualBox virtual machine for Android-x86, Set Type to Linux, and Version to Linux 2.6 or newer. Allocate at least 2 GB of RAM and create a new hard disk image with 8 GB of storage space or more. Load the Android-x86 installation image and follow the official installation instructions.

When running Android-x86 inside a virtual machine, you can’t really expect great performance because Android-x86 is meant to run on bare metal.

5. Android Studio IDE

Android Studio IDE is Google’s official integrated development environment for Android. It’s built on JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA software and runs on Linux, Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS. Included with Android Studio IDE is an Android emulator intended for running and debugging apps in the Android studio.

To install the emulator, choose the Android Emulator component in the SDK Tools tab of the SDK Manager. Open the app you want to run and click the green play-like button in the menu bars at the top. When asked to choose a device, click the Create New Virtual Device button and specify its properties. Once you’re finished, select it from the list of available virtual devices and click OK. The virtual device should start up right away and automatically open your application.

The Android Emulator inside Android Studio IDE doesn’t exactly amaze with its performance or usability, but it gets the job done when you just want to run a single Android app on Linux without installing it on your smartphone.

The Applescript is such a horrible hack and requires a specific browser to be open. Tr.im has an open API, and a much more elegant solution is to use Run Shell Script in Automator, set the shell to /usr/bin/ruby, then use this more elegant ruby code: If you want to use tinyurl.com, then replace the escaped_uri line with this:

The ruby script is a simpler and more elegant solution than my hacky applescript, not to mention browser independent. However, I was going for a service which can work with links, not just urls. The idea being that, for example, you're on the NYTimes front page and see an article you want to tr.im. With the ruby script you have to open the webpage first, then go the location bar, select the URL, right click and use the tr.im service. With the applescript you can just right click on the link to the article and use the tr.im service. Can ruby script work with ? That would be ideal.. Admittedly it does this in a hacky way, using javacript to compare every link's URL on in a page's source to every link's title until it finds the match. The real issue here is that Automator's service creation is limited to accepting as input text, urls, addresses, files, etc. But there's no way to input an html link and get the url out of that. The limitation to Safari is unforunate, but Firefox and Chrome (being written in Carbon) can't work with any services, so the point is mute. I guess Camino users are out of luck. I will update the script to work with both NetNewsWire and Safari and post that.

I tried the Ruby code, created a service with the Run Shell Script option in Automator with the line for using TinyURL, and I saved the service as TinyURL. Also, I have selected the 'Replaces selected text' box up at the top of Automator. It works! Awesome, I've sorely missed the TinyURL service from pre Snow Leopard. One thing, how can I modify the Shell Script to not just replace the text, but also copy it into the clipboard? Some bug fixes and script simplifying. These services just work. Highlight a URL in any application and select the service and the shortened URL will be put on your clipboard, and you'll be notified via Growl or the OS. They don't require Safari or NNW, but in either app you can also use links as well as URLs to get shortened URLs.
