Taking care of new members on motherbase took a lot of work. Taking care of kids though? That was something else.

You were one of the people assigned to help out the ex child soliders, newly rescued by none other than your leader, Big Boss. The staff assigned to them taught them how to read and write, do basic jobs, things like that. Teach them how to live without being behind a gun.

But damn did you not realize how hard that would be.

You had been a substitute teacher before joining Diamond Dogs, so you had some experience dealing with kids their age. However, some of these kids were so damn rebellious and miserable! Especially the one kid named Eli. You tried not to take it out on them though, as they've obviously been through a lot. Not only were they taken from their homes, but they were then forced into the demanding life of a solider, and then taken to a whole new place.

Sometimes, you'd get woken up by their screams in the middle of the night. The other staff got annoyed at this, but you just felt a gut wrenching feeling in your stomach each time you heard them. You'd be the one to check in their quarters, slowly getting the fear striken kids to fall back asleep. It definitely took a toll on you, making you starve for a moments rest.

One day, you were so exhausted, that when you heard them cry out, you didn't immediately get up out of bed. Your quarters was directly next to the childrens, and you were the only one who bothered checking in out of all your roommates (and honestly, out of all your "co-workers") Since you were usually the one to take care of the screaming kids, your roommates were expecting you to get up on your feet.

"Ughh..." Your roommate groans and calls out your name. "Can you please go check on them?"

"Why can't you do that?" 

"You know I'm no good with kids!"

A deep, breathy sigh escapes you. You pinch the bridge of your nose.

Another kid shrieks.

"Alright then." You quickly get up and go to the door.

"Thank y-" The door shuts before your roommate finishs their sentence.

It was a breezey, cool night. Mostly everyone was asleep expect the ones on guard duty. Waves could be heard splashing against mother base, the sound giving you an euphoric sense of peace. Moonlight shone and illuminated every surface it touched. Small moments like these is what made you love being out here on base.

Finally, you got to the door of their quarters, and slowly opened the door. It was a bit hard to see, since the lights were off, but you could make out a two figures sobbing in bed.

You quietly step in and close the door behind you.

"Hello," You whispered in english, but quickly corrected yourself. "Aham uhm, everything okay?"

Getting on your knees so you were eye level with them, you tilt your head. 

"What's the matter?"

One of the kids kept sobbing, his name being Ruth. While the other, Damon, who was wearing some sort of hat stopped to answer you.

"Nightmares." He replied.

"Again?"

"Yeah." He sniffled, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "This time I saw my family. They kept crying out for me, until..." 

"Until?"

"They-they" He fidgeted with his hands.

"Hey, come here." You open your arms. Damon immediately jumps into them. Ruth just stares at you two. "You too sweetheart. Come." 

Slowly, Ruth comes over and joins in. You rub small circles on their backs, and move your fingers through their hair as gently as you can. The other children were awake too, and got out of bed to join you guys on the floor.

"I'm-I'm sorry." Ruth mumbles.

"Why are you sorry."

"We keep waking you up. You keep having to-to take care of us."

"It's okay dear, I don't mind."

"I know, and I'm not sure why. Everyone here hates us except you and Miller."

The mention of him spikes your heart rate.

You hum, "Thats bull. No one hates you. Now just sit around me and I'll sing you a song, okay?"

"Okay" The children chimed.

While you were singing, almost all of your thoughts consisted of your superior, Kazuhira Miller. Even after the children started yawning, even after getting them blankets, even after carefully putting them back in bed, he was still in your mind.

Oh, you're hopeless.

You remembered when the kids first got on base, a rumor spread around that Big Boss actually wanted to put the kids to work, have them back as soliders working for him, but Miller was the one who convinced him otherwise. Convinced him to help them.

Whether it was true or not, it definitely made you more fond of him.

So, turns out today's the day Miller runs his inspection of how your group is doing. This means, of course, that now everyone is trying to he buddy buddy with the kids. Not out of genuine care, but out of their own self interest. The kids being kids, didn't take this sudden new attention too well. They acted like brats with everyone they came across, including Mr. Miller.

Expect for you.

Even if they didn't want to explicitly admit it, the kids have a soft spot for you, and they treated you well throughout the inspection. Obviously, everyone else on your team knew this already, and had a feeling that the inspection was going to go a little something like this.

Apparently, Kazuhira Miller wasn't aware of this fact. Which is how you ended up talking to him one on one after his little inspection.

"The kids seem to like you a lot." Miller bluntly says.

"I guess they do."

"How come?"

"I-how come?" You parrot back.

"Yeah, they hate everyone else here... what makes you so different?"

You blush a bit a rub the back of your neck. "Well..." You trail off, not really wanting to bloat your friendship with the kids. "I just care for them I guess."

"I see." Miller hums. "Wish there were more people like you."

If you weren't already flustered before, you certainly were now.

"Oh, uhm, thanks Kaz." You smile awkwardly. Honestly you were never good with talking to your crushes, even as an adult.

Miller's eyebrow perks up at your words. "Using a first name basis I see?" 

"Shi-sorry Miller. Sir." You swallow. Fuck, why were you using "sir" now? It's not like you were using it before. "I didn't mean anything by it." I could jump right into the sea right about now.

"Mhm. Not that I mind, if it's coming from a pretty thing like you."

What? Did you hear him correctly?

It took Miller's chuckle to make you realize you were just staring agap at him for the past 30 seconds.

"I didn't think it would be this easy to fluster you."

You keep staring, making noises that sounded like you wanted to speak, but couldn't muster anything out. He just smirks. 

"Listen, I've got to go, I do still have duties around here and all." His smirk grows into a grin. "How about next time I see your pretty face around, you can show me how you keep the kids so well behaved."

With that, he just walks away.

However, on the rare occasion someone does something right 

Eli will actually praise them

I forgot to mention that, on the rare occasion he does give praise to the people around him, he'll have the most mocking tone of voice you've ever seen

This applies to you as well (expect you usually get more praise compared to everyone else)

You do something well? He will rave about it

You're not doing anything at all? He will comment on how amazing you look that day

Plus, he's just LOVES to tease you

With the others, his mocking comes from a place of disdain

But with you... it was just different

Fun Story to Share.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.

Oh, man would be nervous AS HELL

He'd get so nervous that he ends up waking you as soon as your head hit him

"Hey wake up!" Hal says as he nudges you, his face turning red

"Oh! Sorry." You say as your head lifts from his shoulder

"It's okay just... don't do that again" He pushes his glasses up

"Why not?"

"Because!" He waves his hands, searching for an excuse "because I said so!"

"Wow that's a real good reason"

"Yes it is! You should be respectful of my boundaries!"

"I am, I'm just messing with you"

"Well don't mess with me again..."

Big Boss 

On the inside he'd be panicking

He'd probably have a similar reaction to Solid Snake

but not do as good a job hiding his emotions

He feels the blood rushing to his face

Good thing you're not awake to see it

he just let's you rest there for however long you're asleep for

Until you wake up

"Sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep on you." You yawn

"It's fine, no big deal" He shrugs

Kazuhriza Miller

Kaz would definitely be full of himself

He'd let you sleep of course

But best BELIEVE he is smiling to himself the entire time you're taking your map

and he WILL tease you after you wake up

"Had any dreams about me while you were sleeping?" He smirks at you while you get up

"Shut up Miller"

"You're gonna have to make me"

"I am not playing this game with you"

"Whatever you say"

Raiden 

He's actually pretty calm for the most part

but he absolutely will have butterflies in his stomach

Raiden would try to play with you hair, which ends up waking you up

"Ah sorry, did I fall asleep on you?"

"Yeah but it's okay. We all get tired from time to time"

"I felt something in my hair though..."

Of course he acts like nothing happened

"You were probably just dreaming it"

And you pretend you believe it

Revolver Ocelot

Ocelot's reaction would depend on what era you're talking about

MGS3 Ocelot would be cocky, feigning confidence, trying to cover up how anxious he felt

"I know I know, my shoulder is a real nice pillow" He'll say corny stuff like that

But nothing covered up the blush in his face

MGSV Ocelot would be a bit surprised but a lot more confident

He doesn't feel a need to comment on it or tease you about it afterward

Sometimes you just needed your rest, even if that meant accidentally falling asleep on someone's shoulder

He'll still be happy about the whole situation though

Liquid Snake 

This bastard might just react more cocky than Miller (if that's even possible)

He'd get real handsy, wrapping his arm around you, holding you closer

You woke up when you felt his hand rubbing up and down your arm

"Eli?" You grumble, half awake

"Yes?"

"Is there a reason why you're holding me like this"

"You seemed cold. I'm just warming you up"

but, it felt comforting, so you let him continue

After a while he starts to feel real confident about himself
