The participation deadline for the (summer) Rock Internship Program has been extended to April 30th.
Remember, this earn-and-learn offering is intended for non-profit, as well as for-profit organizations – irrespective of the organization’s product or service. Ideal targets include, but are not limited to, businesses that have:
·        Existing collegiate-level internships.
·        Existing job shadowing, co-op and/or apprenticeships (youth and adult).
·        Organizational, resource and/or leadership capacities.
·        Engagement and connectivity with past and/or ongoing workforce and talent development activities.
In addition, here are some helpful talking points re: the program:
·        This is a paid ($10/hr.), four-week and one half day, earning-and-learning work experience specifically designed for incoming Rock County H.S. seniors. Interns work 4 hours per day (M-Thur.) at their designated worksite – logging 16-hours weekly and then four hours every Friday at BTC’s Central Campus. The Friday hours are structured workshops, covering various topics and also providing additional ACP development, support, etc.
·        This program builds upon the Inspire Rock County initiative, which is anchored by the requirement that all WI (public) high school students must have an Academic & Career Plan (ACP). Rock County was one of the first areas in WI to implement the ACP requirement before it became a statewide mandate in fall 2017.
·        Participating worksites must assign a dedicated intern worksite supervisor, as well as an alternate, and contribute $800 to support the program.
·        Rock County 5.0 is providing matching funds to cover additional program related expenses.
·        BTC is serving as the Internship Coordinator, responsible for daily program administration and support. Meanwhile, the SW Workforce Development Board is the Employer of Record for all participating (student) interns. This approach alleviates a tremendous amount of administrative, on-boarding, payroll and related overhead costs that participating employers would normally absorb directly.
If you have any questions, please give me a call or connect with the Internship Coordinator - Kerry Osmond at [email protected] or 757-7728.

Janesville Innovation, Inc. Receives $66,000 State Grant to Support Rock County Entrepreneurship
January 24, 2017 – Janesville Innovation, Inc. (JII) has been awarded a $66,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to help fund the organization’s efforts to advance the climate for entrepreneurship through the new Rock County Entrepreneurial Business Development Program (RCEBD). Janesville Innovation, Inc. is one of 11 Wisconsin organizations to receive grants under WEDC’s new Entrepreneurship Support pilot program, which will help fund activities such as the promotion of entrepreneurship; entrepreneurial education, mentorship and training; and business development and financial services. Nearly $500,000 in matching grants were awarded statewide. “WEDC congratulates Janesville Innovation, Inc. for being among the recipients for this new program,” said Mark Hogan, secretary and CEO of WEDC, the State’s lead economic development organization. The Rock County coalition developed an innovative proposal that has the potential to make a real difference when it comes to assisting entrepreneurs and startups throughout the County.” The Rock County Entrepreneurial Business Development Program will serve the needs of Rock County start-ups and early-stage businesses by helping them assess their business concepts and plans, develop and diversify customer bases and markets, and provide links to financial assistance, mentoring and networking. According to James Otterstein, Rock County Economic Development Manager, Rock County’s network of economic development organizations and their partnering service providers have been experiencing a consistent flow of requests from emerging entrepreneurs, as well as existing small businesses. “Over the past three years, we have been able to assist a portion of these entrepreneurs and small businesses through the support offered from the Janesville Innovation Center (JIC). For non-JIC tenants, we have also provided similar types of support through the Rock County Development Alliance. In addition, the development of Irontek this past year represents another component to the area’s entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Otterstein. With the support of the WEDC grant, these offerings – as well as others – can now be folded into a coordinated County-wide network to provide a critical mass of technical support services for area entrepreneurs and small businesses. Barry Brandt, Janesville Innovation, Inc. Board President stated that, “While we have a good pulse on the growing entrepreneurial and small business activity in Rock County, it’s difficult to provide the levels of required services with limited financial resources. With a solid foundation already in place, we look forward to leveraging this WEDC grant with local public/private funding to increase our collaborative efforts; sharpen our focus; and expand services to a much larger constituency base.” “Janesville Innovation, Inc. is one of the many organizations across the state that already support the overall mission of identifying, educating, servicing and funding entrepreneurs,” added Aaron Hagar, Vice President of Entrepreneurship and Innovation for WEDC. “We look forward to seeing how the Rock County Entrepreneurial Business Development Program utilizes the grant to further increase the availability of resources for Rock County entrepreneurs.” While WEDC has a variety of programs to support the formation, development, growth and financing of technology-based and growth-oriented startup and early-stage businesses, the new initiative provides funding to organizations and communities whose efforts may not meet the eligibility criteria for existing programs. The Entrepreneurship Support pilot program is the latest addition to WEDC’s suite of entrepreneurship resources, which includes support for startup accelerators, seed capital funds, investment tax credits and technology development loans. In addition, WEDC supports and engages an existing statewide network of partners that offers business training, mentorship and financing to aspiring entrepreneurs. Other grant recipients include: Center for Enterprise Development Inc., Fond du Lac; Couleecap Inc., La Crosse; Indianhead Community Action Agency, Ladysmith; Milwaukee 7, Milwaukee; Nicolet Area Technical College, Rhinelander; UW-Madison Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic, Madison; UW-Stout Center for Innovation and Development, Menomonie; Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, Madison; and UWM Research Foundation, Milwaukee.

Alliant Energy News Release
News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Scott Reigstad (608) 458-3145 Investor Relations Contact: Susan Gille (608) 458-3956 Alliant Energy project approval means investment and jobs for Wisconsin Riverside Energy Center natural gas and solar-integrated facility moves forward Madison, Wis. – March 31, 2016 – Alliant Energy’s Wisconsin utility received verbal approval today to build its Riverside Energy Center expansion located near Beloit, Wis. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin agreed that moving ahead with the 700-megawatt natural gas-fired facility is in the best interest of customers. “This is a major step forward as the Riverside project is a critical part of our mission to provide reliable, cost-effective energy to our customers for many years to come,” said Patricia Kampling, Alliant Energy Chairman, President and CEO. “This highly efficient generating station will modernize our generating operations and further our transition to cleaner energy sources.” The project is scheduled to break ground this fall, with construction ramping up in the spring of 2017. It is expected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs and will support local suppliers and businesses throughout the state and region. The approximately $700 million investment will be one of the largest economic development projects in Wisconsin. The Riverside Energy Center expansion was first announced in late 2014; it quickly gained widespread support in the Beloit area, Rock County and throughout Wisconsin. It will be built near Alliant Energy’s existing 675-megawatt, natural gas-fired generating station. When completed, the Riverside expansion will be capable of powering more than 535,000 homes. Alliant Energy Corporation’s Wisconsin utility subsidiary, Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), utilizes the trade name of Alliant Energy. The Wisconsin utility is based in Madison, Wis., and provides electric service to 463,000 customers and natural gas service to 185,000 customers across central and southern Wisconsin. The employees of Alliant Energy focus on delivering the energy and exceptional service their customers and communities expect – safely, efficiently, and responsibly. Visit alliantenergy.com or call 1-800-ALLIANT for more information. Alliant Energy Corporation is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LNT. Summary of Key Elements of the Verbal Decision The verbal decision contains the following provisions:  The estimated project cost of $700 million excludes transmission and AFUDC and it is expected to be in service by early 2020.  The Riverside expansion will replace approximately 640 megawatts of older, less-efficient Wisconsin coal and gas units for which retirement has or will occur by 2020.  PSCW approval is conditional on Alliant Energy obtaining other state and federal permitting approvals necessary to construct, operate and connect the Riverside Expansion to the transmission system. ### ANR008-16
