part of why I’ve been radicalized into being basically anti-private schooling is that I don’t think parents are really making informed decisions. obviously there’s the often-cited critique that private schools appear to do better because they select students who are already doing well, which complicates many measures of effectiveness. and many parents in my experience don’t know very much about typical child development, let alone effective teaching strategies, so I don’t even feel like transparency about curricula and philosophy is that helpful
