He's an asymptotic function, forever getting closer to the real world, forever hovering just outside the gap in his domain where everyone else seems to freely plot their points. If he were feeling introspective, he'd call himself a reciprocal function: his life started high, took a nosedive to infinitely low, and then something in him broke and got better and ever since he's been rapidly approaching but never reaching the baseline.

There's a gap at his center, he thinks. His personality is formed around loss. He'd be hard-pressed to say which loss is his (0,0), his origin-- Minato-sensei, perhaps? Obito? The loss that defines him in both range and domain.

Approaching zero from the right, his vertical asymptote gets him almost close enough to being a real person that he can pretend to be one. It gets easier to smile every day, until sometimes he finds himself smiling when no one's around. He waters his plant. He bothers his genin. Life is alright. Maybe, after all this, he was just a function with an odd exponent, but a positive coefficient. Things get worse whenever he so much as breathes on them, but they'll get better every time. He's approaching positive infinity from the left.
