This truth stands as a firm reminder. Today it has more personal relevance. This morning was day 2 of SUPY Teacher Training on the water. It was beautiful, calm conditions. Then we practiced water rescues. I needed to face the fear of the unknown in the water. As a lifeguard, I am a strong swimmer, so no worries there. But the "what ifs" of jellyfish, baby sharks, snakes, alligators (in the marsh where we anchored) grew louder. Sometimes we just have to "woman up" and do the thing! I practiced rescuing two fellow students and man, it's exhausting, especially if they are unconscious and heavy in the water. Next, I was rescued and needed to be heavy, unconcious, and thrown/dragged over the board. Being vulnerable without "helping" the rescue to allow the trainee to have their own experience was counterintuitive. I'm used to "doing the thing". Both experiences were teachable moments or facing the thing I needed to do. At the end, no worries of jellyfish. I paddled my exhausted jelly self back to shore.
