The First Europeans In America Were Not The Spanish
A lot of people have the false belief that Hispanics were the first people in America. But they were not even the first Europeans to colonize America.
In most discussions of the topic pro Hispanic people often forget that Canada and Greenland are not only part of the Western Hemisphere but actually part of the North American continent.
While Columbus not only never set foot in North America, he didn't even arrive in the Caribbean until after 1492. The Vikings first arrived in the Greenland part of North America is 982 AD, during the height of the Viking era. During this time they established long lasting colonies on Greenland and set up colonies in along the east coast of Canada and the Northeastern USA. Most experts agreed that the Vikings explored the area of Virginia and North Carolina centuries before the Spanish ever set foot there.
In what is now New Foundland the Vikings led by Leif Ericson established a semi permanent colony. They left behind items that indicated that their original intent was permanent settlement but that was cancelled by the onset of the little ice age which made travel between the northeastern US and Iceland too perilous so many of the Viking residents of North America abandoned their permanent homes but continued to return year after year to hunt and to continue trade relations with the locals.
Unlike the Spanish, the Vikings did not seek to ban indigenous languages or exterminate entire ethnic groups in North America. All together, while most people think the Viking presence lasted only 25 years, archeological evidence and experts on the Norse and Native Americans at the time prove that the Norse presence in North America actually lasted about 400 years and the experts in North America's Norse history said the Norse stopped coming sometime around the year 1400 which was just 92 years prior to Columbus voyage to the Caribbean.
Of course the question that gets brought up a lot as proof the Norse were only here for 10 years and left for good is that they did not wipe out any ethnicities and did not spread any diseases. The first reasoning, about not banning native languages or engaging in genocide, rather than proving the Norse were never here, actually just proves they were more respectful of native peoples than the Spanish and Anglo Saxons ever were. Just because you don't run around engaging in genocide in a place it does not prove you were never there or that you were not there for long.
As for the disease argument, because the Vikings did not pass any diseases to the natives, we are now learning that because of their home territory being so far to the north, a lot of the diseases that the Spanish carried with them, could not survive in Northern Europe's cold and harsh climate. Scandinavia and northern Europe during that period were extremely hostile environments for Mediterranean based diseases. Because of this, experts say the reason the Vikings did not pass along any diseases to North Americans is because they literally did not have any to pass along. Historians says that all of the diseases brought to America and which were responsible for devastating indigenous populations were all brought here by the Spanish. This is attested to by the fact that when the Norse returned in the 1500's they found that a lot of the villages their ancestors had previously traded with had been decimated by diseases that everyone had agreed been brought to North America exclusively by the Spanish explorers. It was also the case when the British showed up and the first British colonists reported finding entire villages that had been decimated by "Columbus' plague".
So while the Hispanics have only been in this hemisphere for 500 years, the Norse have already been here for over 1,000 years with only a one hundred year gap. They left North America around 1400 only to return in the mid 1500s. Scandinavians therefore are the only ones who can rightfully say they were the first Europeans in America and they can also correctly say they have been here longer than any other non indigenous ethnic group, including Hispanics. So instead of trying to make people speak Spanish which is the language of genocide, perhaps we should require people to speak Norse, the first European language to be spoken in America.
