Sometimes I watch Coco and I’m like “Damn, alive Héctor and dead Héctor are like two entirely different people” and then I want a prequel where we get to see Héctor acting like a dork when he’s alive

What's your opinion on this Imelda discourse you caused a while ago now?

while i still refuse to believe it was an actual “discourse” but rather my wording being completely off and people overreacting, my general opinion hasn’t changed much. 

i still don’t like imelda rivera as a character. while i believe it was indeed impressive to lead a business as a woman back in these times, and i’m sure she was intended to be a strong character, i believe her best potential wasn’t portrayed.

in fact, i find that there could have been a lot more to imelda’s, héctor’s and ernesto’s backstory, and more emotional depth to them. looking back at the movie, it feels like the time miguel and the living riveras are introduced takes forever to pass, and the introduction to the land of the dead is very rushed and happens way too fast. i mean, we’re almost halfway into the movie before the real plot even begins. i’m sure a lot of that time could have been used to show more of imelda’s character in depth, or at least give us a chance to get to know her better. in the movie, all i see in her is a selfish and stubborn hag who refuses to talk to her dead husband even though he must have tried several times (”how many times must i turn you away”) to explain to her what happened. we see a family entirely manipulated by a woman who put her own desires over her great-great-grandson’s (”you go home my way or no way” - meaning “you either stop playing music or you die, you choose”). we see a woman who finds out that her husband died and is like “so what? you left me alone”. 

i think it would have been better to include that part from the coco novel where she broke down crying because she hadn’t meant that “you go home my way or no way” like this. she cries because she worries for him and feels guilty. why didn’t that make it into the movie? would it have made her any weaker as a character? i don’t think so. i think it would have made her at least a little bit more sympathetic for me. i would have loved to see more of her emotional development instead of just “she sings once and suddenly everything is alright again”. also - i would have loved to see her apologize to héctor. because in the end, let’s be honest. it was not only ernesto’s fault héctor was being forgotten. even if he had still stolen his songs - if imelda had only allowed her family to remember héctor as the guy who left her for music; they would still have remembered him. if she had apologized to him at some point i would have had the heart to acknowledge her as a strong character. but this way, she is a character who has a lot of potential, but was portrayed poorly - sadly. luckily, many roleplayers who slip into her role manage to fix that poor portrayal very well and make her a very likeable character to interact with. but movie imelda is definitely not my favorite and will never be.

now that my choice of words is hopefully better than in my last post about her, i hope people will understand my point as well. and most of all, hopefully i will not receive death threats again.
