Chapter 3: Shadows of Longing
Keep on Reading

It's been a week, and Skylar couldn’t shake off what Kenny did to her—or what others told her he did since she couldn’t remember the details. He put her in a trance, making her believe he could cast spells. And he did a good job at that, even though it wasn’t the love spell she wanted.
Skylar had wanted Holden to fall in love with her and share an intimate moment after their movie date. That was the purpose of the spell. But Holden, the mermaid prince, didn’t do what she expected. Instead, he wanted to break off the relationship, leaving her feeling unworthy. How could someone so enchanting not see her worth?
Now, with Kenny in the picture, she felt torn. He was intriguing—a vampire prince wrapped in mystery. His charm drew her in like a moth to a flame, igniting a flicker of hope in her heart. But was it right to entertain feelings for another man when her heart still aches for Holden? Or could she have both? The thought excited her.
As she tried hard to study for an upcoming exam, the distractions of both men lingered in her mind like a haunting melody. Could she really pursue a relationship with either of them? Or was she just setting herself up for more heartbreak? No, she always wants what she gets. Yet, the weight of her emotions felt heavier each day, and the shadows of doubt loomed larger.
Eventually, she stopped studying and got up from her desk, shaking off the tangled thoughts. Leaving her room, she walked into the hallway. There, she caught sight of Holden heading to the bathroom, a towel draped over his shoulder.
“Hi, Holden,” she said, her voice flirty, a flicker of hope lighting up her eyes.
“I’m not interested,” he replied flatly, quickly shutting the bathroom door. The familiar sting pierced her heart.
Oh great. Rejected again. But I will not quit. Determination flared within her. This wouldn’t be the end. She craved his affection and believed in their connection, yet here she was, facing another rejection.
Determined, she descended to the first underground floor and spotted Kenny sitting at one of the computers in the computer room, fingers flying over the keyboard. The glass wall made him feel even more unapproachable, like a distant star she could never reach. She checked her reflection, smoothing her hair and adjusting her outfit. This is my chance, she thought, feeling a thrill of hope mixed with anxiety.
Tumblr media
“Hi, Kenny,” she said in a breathless, flirty voice, walking up to him and placing her hand on his shoulder. The warmth of his presence sent a shiver of excitement through her.
“Hey there, Skylar,” he replied, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. “What’s cooking?”
“What can you do for me?” she asked, leaning closer, her heart racing. “I was wondering if we could go on a date tonight.”
“A date tonight?” Kenny feigned regret, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, I wish I could, but unfortunately, I have to study for my midterms. Maybe some other time.” He turned back to his computer, dismissing her.
Frustration bubbled inside, mixing with the lingering ache of Holden's rejection. Why did he have to play hard to get? Was he really busy, or was he toying with her feelings? But I will somehow win him over.
“No,” she said, shaking her head defiantly, her hands on her hips.
Kenny turned around, intrigued. "No?"
"Yes," she said, putting her finger on his chest and trailing it down, feeling the heat of their connection. "No, we will have a date tonight."
"And why is that?" he asked, leaning back in his chair, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Because," she started, feeling bold yet vulnerable, caught between her desires.
"Because," he repeated playfully, "that's not a reason."
“Because,” she continued, “I have a foolproof plan to get you out of this building and onto a date with me.”
"I'm listening," he said, leaning forward, his interest piqued.
“I was thinking that you and I should go to Ravenwood for our date tonight,” said Skylar, her heart racing at the thought of being alone with him. The idea of escaping to a place filled with magic and possibility was intoxicating.
“Why?” he asked, feigning innocence.
“Just so that you and I can have some alone time,” she answered, her voice laced with hope and longing.
“I wish that I could,” he flirted back, tapping his fingers on the desk. “But I really do have to study for my midterms tomorrow. Why not ask any of the other ladies to come with you? You know, a girl’s night out.”
“Because they’re all busy studying for their midterms.”
“Then there’s no harm in going by yourself,” he teased, a smirk dancing on his lips.
“But I want you to come with me so that you can protect me,” she insisted, desperation creeping in. She needed his presence, his charm—something to fill the void that Holden's rejection had left.
“Aw, Tate told me that you beat him up,” Kenny said, still teasing, leaning back in his chair with a playful glint in his eye. “You can handle yourself. Maybe we can go on a date some other time.”
With that, Kenny turned away, returning to his work. Skylar felt a mix of frustration and determination. Why did he have to be so elusive? Was he playing with her heart? I will get him, no matter what it takes.
“Look, we'll discuss this tomorrow when we both have time, okay?” he said, not looking up.
“Alright,” she replied, leaving the room disappointed, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions. The ache for Holden pulsed in her chest, but the thrill of wanting Kenny electrified her veins. How could she reconcile these two desires?
Back in her room, Skylar paced, her thoughts racing. She had heard about a tarot reader somewhere in Ravenwood, and she wanted to know about her future. What if she could find a way to change her luck with Holden or Kenny? Was she destined for a life of longing and rejection? The uncertainty gnawed at her.
To shift her focus, she went to her desk and opened her computer, searching for a way to get to Ravenwood, even if she had to go alone.
“Let's see,” she said, clicking on a search engine. She found a map of Ravenwood, complete with buildings and paths. She studied it, jotting down directions. This will work, she thought, feeling a surge of determination. But she knew the tarot reader was elusive, with a table somewhere in Ravenwood for readings. I have to find out where, she thought, her heart racing with anticipation. She will go there after school tomorrow.
The next day after school, Skylar took a cab to Ravenwood, only to be greeted by an unexpected downpour. Rain fell hard as she paid the driver, then pulled her umbrella from her purse and opened it.

As she stepped out into the rain, the atmosphere shifted. Ravenwood's old-world charm felt more pronounced under the heavy clouds. The streets glistened, reflecting the muted glow of the street lamps lining the roads. The scent of damp earth and blooming nightshade filled the air, wrapping around her like a shroud. The rain poured steadily, creating a rhythmic drumming that echoed her racing heart.
Walking through the deserted main street, the eerie quiet amplified her thoughts. Shadows danced in the corners of her vision, and the statues scattered throughout the city seemed to watch her with their stone eyes. Is this what it feels like to be glamorous yet utterly alone? A sense of magic lingered in the air, but it felt more like a curse than a blessing. She felt as if the very essence of Ravenwood was mocking her—was she drawn to its mysteries, or was it merely an escape from her reality?
Determined, she searched for the shop that might house the tarot reader but found nothing. Just as she was about to give up, she noticed three blue lights flickering in the distance. Intrigued, she decided to follow them, hoping they might lead her to something—or someone—more fulfilling.
As she approached the lights, the air grew colder, and an unsettling chill crept down her spine. The flickering intensified, casting ghostly shadows that seemed to whisper her name. Could the lights be a sign, or were they merely a trick of the dark?
Entering what she thought was the town square, she discovered the lights belonged to specters, floating like fish in the air. They had beady little eyes and mouths that seemed to whisper secrets.
Tumblr media
“Excuse me,” she said to one of the specters. “Do you know where I can find a tarot reader?”
“No…” it replied, a flicker of annoyance in its voice.
"I'm sorry..."
Tumblr media
"Sorry," echoed the others, their responses leaving her feeling increasingly frustrated.
“Can you tell me what the future holds for me then?” she asked, desperation creeping into her voice. She wished someone would see her, truly see her.
“That is not something you should ask,” one specter replied cryptically, its voice echoing eerily around her.
"I'm sorry.”
"Sorry," the specters echoed again, their dismissive tone cutting deep.
Frustrated, Skylar turned her back on them, continuing her journey. Suddenly, a light caught her attention from the corner of her eye, shining from a nearby building.
It was Ravenwood City Hall. Inside, she found a bulletin board with an 8 x 11 poster showing two ladies greeting each other. One faced away from the camera, and a few ghosts hovered nearby. One ghost was seated at a round table with a plate of food. The poster read:
Thinned Festival
Location: Near Club Eternity
Time: Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
It listed all the activities for the festival, including tarot readings. Excitement surged through her. This could be her chance.
“Oh great, it's Tuesday today, and I can’t make it because of school tomorrow,” Skylar groaned to herself. “Maybe I can go to Club Eternity and see if anyone knows any tarot readers.”
With renewed hope, she folded the paper and tucked it in her purse, also grabbing a map of Ravenwood. Rain continued to pour as she stepped outside.
"Now," she said, glancing at the map. "Where's this Club Eternity place?"
Deciding to hop on a bus, she set out to find it. When she arrived, she saw a modern-looking building, but like all of Ravenwood, it was eerily lifeless. Skylar approached the door and pushed it open.
Club Eternity resembles any other modern bar, with neon blue lights and sleek furniture. However, the only life inside was the bartender.
Skylar walked up to the bar and ordered a drink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Is there anything I can help you with?" the bartender asked, her voice warm and inviting.
“Yes, can I order an Irish Car Bomb?" Skylar replied.
"Alright," the bartender said, starting to prepare her drink.
"I was wondering," Skylar continued, trying to keep the conversation going, "if there is a tarot reader around here?"
"Yes," said the bartender, her eyes brightening with interest.
"Where?" asked Skylar eagerly.
"They usually hang around Club Eternity," the bartender explained as she handed the drink to Skylar.
"So they’re here then," Skylar said, her hopes rising.
"Usually, yeah."
"Where are they now?" Skylar pressed, feeling a mix of hope and frustration.
"I'm sorry," the bartender said, turning away.
"They’re not here."
"Where can I find them?" asked Skylar, her frustration bubbling.
"That's not my concern," was the bartender's only response.
"Sorry," was all the response she received.
"Ugh!” Frustrated, Skylar finished her drink, paid her bill, and left. However, she lingered a bit more inside the club, unsure of what to do next.
Eventually, she went upstairs to the balcony, where she spotted a telescope. Although she wasn’t particularly interested in astronomy, she loved how the stars shone at night. After a few moments, boredom set in, and she felt the weight of her unfulfilled desires.
Feeling defeated, she exited Club Eternity, called a cab, and headed back home. She needed to figure out a way to get to that festival. But that was a challenge for another time.
Feeling defeated, she exited Club Eternity, called a cab, and headed back home. As she settled into her seat in the cab, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Pulling it out, she froze. A message from Nikita popped up: “Are you okay? Where have you been?”
Skylar’s heart sank as the cab drove away from Ravenwood, leaving behind the mystery of the tarot reader. With a mix of anger and confusion, she gazed out the window, the rain blurring the world outside. What was she going to do now?

Chapter 3: Guys Night Out Part 2
Keep on Reading
Previous | Next
That night, the five boys gathered in the Gnome’s Arms, a rustic bar in Henford-on-Bagley. The air was thick with the scent of spilled beer and fried food, while creaking wooden beams added to its charm. Yet, the atmosphere felt heavy; it was just them and the bartender on a slow night, even with discounted drinks.
“Why is it so dead here?” Tate asked, surveying the empty chairs with disappointment.
Barrett recognized the longing in his eyes, mirroring his own feelings. Tonight felt like a metaphor for their struggles—eager to find their place but unsure how to step into the spotlight. He felt like he was on the outside looking in, a mere observer in his own life.
“Good question,” Holden replied, frowning at the empty bar.
Barrett felt the familiar pressure of family expectations and his facade of confidence weighing heavily. Despite their camaraderie, they were all grappling with their identities, each carrying invisible burdens that made him feel more alienated.
Tumblr media
They approached the bar and sat on stools—except for Tate, who eyed his seat suspiciously.
“Yeah, I’m not sitting on that,” he said, grimacing. “Last time I did, I got a splinter.”
“Oh, come on! It’s just a bar,” Jakov teased, rolling his eyes. Barrett envied Jakov's ease with his family’s legacy, wishing he could find that same comfort in his own chaotic identity.
“A glass of beer, please,” Holden ordered.
Barrett watched, wondering if he ever felt as lost as he did. The memories of his family's expectations loomed large, suffocating his desire for connection.
Barrett frowned. “You’re drinking?”
“Sure. It’s Guys Night Out. Why not?” Holden replied, masking his own uncertainty.
Barrett wished he could be as carefree as his friends.
“Can I have the same?” Barrett asked, curiosity battling apprehension. The idea of drinking felt both exciting and terrifying, a small rebellion against the constraints of his alien heritage.
“Coming right up.”
“What about you three?” the bartender asked, turning to Kenny, Jakov, and Tate.
“Can I have a glass of wine and a rum and coke?” Kenny asked, leaning back casually, his fangs glinting in the bar's low light.
“Why two drinks?” Barrett inquired, his curiosity piqued.
Tumblr media
“I’m a vampire,” Kenny explained. “I drink blood, but I need to fit into this mortal world.”
Barrett sensed the weight behind his words.
“That must be tough,” he replied, feeling his own duality pressing down as an alien, never fully belonging to either world.
“I manage,” Kenny replied, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of uncertainty. Barrett recognized that look; it mirrored his own feelings of inadequacy.
“I’ll have a glass of wine,” Jakov said, looking relaxed, though Barrett sensed tension beneath the surface. He envied Jakov's confidence, wishing he could feel the same.
“And I’ll have beer,” Tate added, his form shimmering. Beneath his easy-going facade, he felt the weight of his royal lineage. Barrett shared that fear; the pressure of identity loomed over them both.
“Coming right up,” the bartender said, serving their drinks with a smile.
“Since I have a girlfriend, I’ll sit somewhere else and let you guys be wingmen for Barrett,” Jakov said, grinning as he slid off his stool.
“Me too,” Tate said, floating after Jakov. “I don’t want to embarrass myself again.”
Barrett watched them go, feeling a mix of envy and loneliness. The laughter echoed in his ears, a reminder of how he often felt like a ghost in his own life.
Tumblr media
They found a small wooden table in the middle of the bar, the lighting casting shadows on their faces. Kenny looked out through the bar's window at the bustling street, spotting a few girls looking at them.
“There are some girls here. First rule: find out if the woman is single, then ask her out,” Holden said, trying to sound confident.
Barrett's heart raced. “What if she’s in a relationship?”
“Simple. Look for a ring on her fourth finger,” Holden answered.
Barrett chuckled nervously, feeling the weight of the moment. “And if she’s not wearing one?”
“Then it’s fair game!” Holden said cheerfully. But a knot twisted in Barrett's stomach. What if he embarrassed himself tonight? He felt like a ghost in his own life, a shadow of the future king he was meant to be.
“Second rule: compliment her, but make it unique. Skip the usual ‘You have beautiful eyes,’” said Holden.
“Oh.”
“Last rule: just be yourself. Let’s go outside,” Holden said, gesturing toward the door.
Barrett, Kenny, and Holden took their drinks and stepped outside into the cool night air, a refreshing contrast to the tense atmosphere inside.
“Hello, ladies,” Holden said confidently, leaning against the wall, his charm radiating. Barrett felt that same suffocating pressure rising inside him.
“Hi, boys,” a blonde witch in a bright yellow shirt replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Are you having a good time?” she asked, smiling.
“We're just hanging,” Holden replied smoothly, but Barrett felt his own expectations mounting. As an alien prince, he felt like a mere mortal fumbling through social interactions.
Holden whispered to Barrett, “That’s what you say.”
“I’m Barrett,” he introduced himself, trying to sound casual, but his voice felt shaky. Inside, he was unraveling, the reality of his alien identity crashing over him like a wave.
“We know who you are,” the blonde said, her grin widening. “You’re Prince Holden, Prince Kenny, and the alien prince from Oasis Springs. We’re big fans!”
Barrett smiled, feeling buoyed—until the weight of expectations crashed down like a heavy tide. He was no longer just Barrett; he was a label, an image to uphold.
“Now,” Holden whispered, “the fun part: ask them out.”
Barrett felt the pressure mounting.
“Uh, yes,” he stammered, gulping down his drink, the liquid suddenly feeling like lead in his stomach. The eyes of the girls bore down on him, and the weight of their expectations made him want to disappear.
Sensing his unease, Barrett said, “I’m sorry, I have to go.”
He retreated inside, leaving Kenny and the girls stunned, his heart pounding with embarrassment.
“Just a moment, ladies! We’re finding a girlfriend for him,” Holden said as Kenny followed Barrett.
“But we want to be with you and Kenny!” said the brunette, pouting slightly, her disappointment palpable.
Holden paused, thinking of what to say next.
“I’ve already got a girlfriend,” Holden lied, relishing their interest. He quickly went inside to catch up with Barrett and Kenny.
Barrett muttered, “I think I'll have another beer,” retreating into his thoughts. Each sip felt like an attempt to drown out his self-doubt, but it clung to him like a second skin.
“Me too,” Holden said, feeling some pressure lift at the bar.
“I’ll also have a beer,” Kenny agreed, but his gaze wandered outside, lingering on the girls who had just walked away.
“Three beers, coming right up.”
They chugged their drinks, the cold liquid refreshing against their throats, but Barrett felt the weight of disappointment hang heavy in the air. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he was letting everyone down, especially himself.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Jakov and Tate were having a blast at their table, laughter echoing against the rustic walls, a stark contrast to Barrett’s turmoil. Each laugh felt like a reminder of his alienation, how he was always on the outside looking in.
“This is interesting,” Jakov said, smirking. “We’re just chatting while they figure out Barrett’s love life.”
Tate chuckled, glancing around the bar. “It’s like a soap opera. What do you think is happening?”
“Probably a lot of awkwardness. Barrett’s not smooth with ladies,” Jakov teased, but his tone held concern.
Barrett felt a flicker of hope; if Jakov could overcome, maybe he could too. But the thought was fleeting, quickly overshadowed by the weight of his own insecurities.
Kenny listened, feeling a mix of empathy for Barrett and the pressure of his own unfulfilled expectations.
“We’ve all been there,” he said quietly, reflecting on his own struggles with dating and responsibilities. Holden nodded in agreement, wishing he could break free from the expectations that tied him down.
“Speaking of awkwardness, did you catch the game last night? That last-minute goal was insane!” Tate said, shifting the conversation.
Jakov’s eyes lit up. “I did! What a comeback!”
“Exactly! The team thrives on pressure,” Tate replied, leaning back and laughing to ease the tension.
“Must have ice in their veins. I’d be a wreck!” Jakov said, shaking his head. Barrett felt overwhelmed by the weight of his own expectations, the pressure to shine in a place that felt increasingly foreign.
“Same! Just hoping not to trip over my own feet,” Tate grinned.
“True! No pressure when you’re just enjoying the game,” Jakov nodded. “What’s next on the schedule?”
Meanwhile, Barrett felt overwhelmed at the bar.
“Hey, bartender, any advice on finding a girlfriend?” he asked, desperation creeping into his voice.
“Just be yourself,” she said, her tone encouraging.
“I tried that,” Barrett said, frustration creeping in. “I feel like a complete fuck-up.”
The words tumbled out, reflecting his inner turmoil, a confession he hadn’t meant to speak aloud.
“What about that girl over there?” The bartender pointed back to the window where a woman with dark brown hair and a yellow dress stood.
“Should I talk to her?” Barrett asked, hope and doubt mixing in his stomach. He felt like he was standing at the edge of a precipice, ready to leap but unsure if he would fly or fall.
“Why not?” Kenny said, his confidence renewed. They headed back outside, Barrett’s heart racing with each step.
“Hi there,” Barrett said, approaching the girl. “I’m Barrett.”
“Hi, I’m Annita,” she replied, smiling, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. For a moment, he felt a flicker of excitement that quickly turned to dread.
Barrett felt his confidence waver. “Um... so, what are you doing out here?”
“Nothing much,” Annita answered, her tone casual, but Barrett could sense an undercurrent of disinterest. The realization hit him like a cold wave; he was losing her interest before he even had a chance.
“Me too,” Barrett said, forcing a smile, but it felt like a mask slipping. He was failing, and the weight of that failure pressed down on him.
Tumblr media
“Well, I better go now. See ya,” Annita said, turning to leave, the rejection hitting him like a punch to the gut. He felt humiliated, exposed, and utterly defeated.
“Wow, she was friendly,” Kenny remarked, laughing lightly, but Barrett felt the disappointment weigh heavier.
“Yeah, well, I tried to be myself,” Barrett said, disappointment creeping in, his voice barely above a whisper. The words felt hollow, a reminder of his alienation.
“But you need to keep her interested,” Holden said, his tone encouraging yet firm.
“How the fuck can I do that?” Barrett asked, frustration bubbling. “What if I keep screwing it up?”
“By asking her questions?” Holden suggested.
“But that didn't work. She left! How do I ask a woman out if she’s not interested?”
“We're here to help you,” Kenny reassured Barrett, though he couldn't shake his own feelings of inadequacy. As the confident vampire prince, he felt just as lost.
Then Barrett noticed a woman with tanned skin and a short, stylish haircut standing by herself from quite a distance away. He walked up to her, determined to battle his anxiety.
“Hi, I’m Barrett,” he said, trying to sound charming, despite the nerves coursing through him.
Tumblr media
“Hi, I’m Ash,” she replied, flirting effortlessly, her smile captivating. For a moment, Barrett felt hope flicker to life, a brief escape from his spiraling thoughts.
Kenny and Holden exchanged glances.
“Don’t I know her?” Kenny asked, intrigued, his interest piqued but mixed with a hint of dread.
Holden leaned in with his arms crossed on his chest. “You’re right; she looks familiar.”
Then they noticed an angry man approaching.
“That’s Tomas Jeeves,” Kenny said, alarmed, his voice dropping to a whisper.
“Shit, Barrett is talking to his wife,” Holden added, his posture shifting. He uncrossed one arm over his chest, supporting the elbow of his other arm, which instinctively rose to his forehead as he recognized what was unfolding.
Kenny sprang into action, using his own green energy to hypnotize Tomas, his focus intense. Tomas soon left the scene, walking away like a zombie, the tension easing for a moment.
“Thanks, Kenny. That was close,” Holden said, relief washing over him.
Tumblr media
Barrett felt uncomfortable as he tried to ask Ash on a date.
“So, what are you doing Saturday night?” he asked, his voice slightly shaking, the stakes feeling impossibly high.
Tumblr media
“I’m attending a book club with my friends. What about you, Barrett? You should come,” Ash said, her tone playful, but Barrett felt the ground shifting beneath him.
Oh shit, what have I done? Barrett panicked.
“I don't think so,” he said, trying to let her down gently.
“You don't know until you try,” Ash replied, her smile unwavering, but Barrett felt the weight of his failure pressing down. The realization that he couldn’t even handle a simple conversation made him feel smaller.
“Oh.”
Kenny watched the disaster unfold, feeling a mix of empathy and frustration. Then he spotted an attractive girl walking by.
“I’m going to talk to that girl over there,” Kenny declared, his confidence returning, a flicker of hope igniting.
“Wow, she's cute. Go get her,” Holden said, patting Kenny’s shoulder, a grin spreading across his face.
Kenny approached her. “Hi, I’m Kenny.”
“Hi, I'm Avery,” she replied, smiling brightly, her energy infectious.
Holden returned his focus to Barrett.
“So, what do you do for a living, Ash?”
“I’m a model,” she said, confidence shining through, her words like a spell.
“Wow,” Barrett said, impressed, feeling a flicker of hope. “I’m a prince. My mother’s Queen Cadence of Oasis Springs.”
“Nice. I didn’t know that,” Ash replied, intrigued, her interest seeming genuine.
“Why? How?” Barrett asked, feeling hopeful, the weight of expectation lifting slightly, like a breath of fresh air.
Ash looked confused, her brow furrowing, and Barrett felt the ground shift again.
“Everyone knows who I am. So I wondered how you didn’t know. Are you new here?”
Just then, grunting noises came from behind the bar, breaking the tension like glass shattering.
“No, I’m from here. Just waiting for someone,” she said, her voice steady, but Barrett sensed an underlying tension.
“A friend?”
“No, my husband,” Ash answered as Holden rushed over, sensing the shift in energy.
“Hi, Mrs. Jeeves,” he said, shaking her hand, his charm pouring forth. “I’m a big fan of your husband!”
She smiled, flattered, but Barrett could see the flicker of discomfort in her eyes. The grunting continued, echoing in the backdrop, a reminder of the chaos.
“Mind if I steal Barrett away?” Holden asked, his tone light but urgency creeping in.
“Sure,” she replied, and just then, Tomas returned from a distance, waving to his wife with a smile that sent a chill down Barrett’s spine.
“Bye. See you soon,” she said, turning back to Barrett, a hint of mischief in her eyes, leaving him feeling both exhilarated and terrified.
Tumblr media
Holden pulled Barrett back inside. “Kenny and I just saved you from Tomas Jeeves’ wife.”
“She is his wife?” Barrett asked, shocked, his heart racing.
“Yes. She’s also a model and a celebrity,” Holden replied, a knowing smile on his face, but Barrett felt the weight of embarrassment flood him.
“Oh, shit. I can't believe I didn't recognize her,” Barrett said, relief and embarrassment flooding him, the night feeling like a whirlwind.
“It happens. Don't worry; you’ll do better next time. Some of us are naturally good at this; others need practice. Besides, Tomas wanted to punch you, but Kenny hypnotized him. We should go now,” Holden said, his tone shifting to urgency.
“Where’s Kenny?” Barrett asked, shaking off the awkwardness.
“Can’t you hear?” Holden replied, “He’s getting laid.”
“Oh.”
“Now, we need to let Jakov and Tate know we’re heading home,” Holden said, glancing around the bar. “Then we’ll wait for Kenny.”
They approached Jakov and Tate, who were enjoying their banter at the table, laughter echoing against the bar's wooden walls, a stark contrast to Barrett’s turmoil.
“Hey guys, we need to go,” Holden said, sitting with Jakov and Tate.
“Oh,” Jakov said, glancing around. “Where’s Kenny?”
“He’s currently losing his virginity,” Holden smirked, hearing grunting noises in the background. “We’ll wait for him before we leave.”
“At least one of us got laid tonight,” Tate chuckled, leaning back with a smug expression.
“True,” answered Barrett, feeling the disappointment wash over him, the weight of his failure settling in.
“Don’t worry, Barrett,” Jakov said, feeling sorry for him. “We’ve all been there. I once tried to impress a girl by showing her my werewolf transformation, and she ran away.”
“At least you didn’t turn into a cat,” Holden jokes, laughter bubbling around the table, a momentary reprieve from the tension.
“Alright, enough reminiscing," Jakov said, regaining composure. "We’re here to support Barrett, remember?”
"Yeah, Barrett, you’ve got this. We’ll figure it out together," said Tate
"Right," Barrett said, taking a deep breath, preparing himself. “I’ll figure it out. Thanks, guys.”
Barrett stood among his friends, weighed down by his alien heritage and the embarrassment of almost hooking up with Tomas Jeeves' wife. Despite feeling like a fool, he felt their unwavering support, each grappling with insecurities yet always having his back. This camaraderie sparked hope, reminding him that every failed connection was a learning experience. He realized he didn’t have to navigate his identity alone; with their support, he could embrace his alien roots and strive toward becoming who he wanted to be.

Barrett walked into the gym, where the air was thick with the familiar scent of sweat and rubber mats, mingling to create a charged atmosphere of determination and camaraderie. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a stark glow on the polished wooden floors, where stray weights lay scattered like forgotten ambitions. The rhythmic clanking of metal and the echo of heavy breaths filled the space, a symphony of effort and resilience.
Tumblr media
He saw all the guys hard at work. Tate was sprinting on the treadmill, his ghostly form gliding effortlessly despite having no legs—a surreal sight against the backdrop of grunts and the thud of weights being dropped. Each step he took sent a ripple of determination through the room, inspiring those around him.
Kenny was pumping iron, the sound of metal clashing resonating like thunder with each powerful push on the bench press. Sweat trickled down his brow, and he wiped it away with a determined flick, but the tension in his eyes betrayed deeper concerns. Barrett felt a pang of empathy; he wondered what burdens they all carried beneath their confident exteriors.
Tumblr media
Jakov, his muscles rippling as he swung a kettlebell, embodied a blend of youthful vigor and emerging maturity. The heavy kettlebell arced gracefully through the air, showcasing his strength while Barrett admired Jakov’s confidence, feeling a twinge of envy as he watched him move with ease, wishing he could channel that same self-assuredness in social situations.
Holden focused intently on the chest and leg press machine, his brows furrowed in concentration. His jaw tightened as he gripped the bar, knuckles white. Barrett noticed how the corners of Holden's mouth twitched, revealing the pressure of expectations mounting beneath his confident facade. Barrett recognized that feeling all too well; his own alien heritage was a constant reminder of the weight he faced.
Finding the boxing gloves by the punching bag, Barrett slipped them on, the worn leather comforting in his hands. He threw jabs, the bag swinging back lightly with each hit, the rhythmic thuds reverberating like a heartbeat, grounding him in the moment.
“Tate, I forgot to ask how your date with Nikita went two nights ago?” Kenny called out casually, leaning back on the bench, a playful grin on his face, though his eyes flickered with genuine curiosity.
“It went better than expected. She didn’t come out of the hallucination until the middle of the date,” Tate replied, a proud smile breaking through his worry as he wiped his brow, the tension easing momentarily.
Kenny chuckled, shaking his head, the sound light but carrying an undercurrent of camaraderie. “My bad! It’s tricky to tell when someone gets out of a trance.”
Despite the laughter, Tate’s smile faded momentarily, anxiety creeping back as he adjusted his stance on the treadmill. His mind raced with thoughts about university life and future responsibilities, the weight pressing down on him like the bar he had just lifted. Barrett noted the struggle hidden behind their jokes, wanting to reassure them but unsure how.
Barrett listened intently, grounding himself in their banter.
“So, how did you end up on a date with her?” he asked, standing next to the punching bag, arms crossed, a hint of intrigue lighting his eyes.
“She just asked me,” Tate said, smirking as he hopped off the treadmill, his confidence returning but still wrestling with doubts. Barrett felt a flicker of hope—could it be that simple for him too, if he only had the courage?
Barrett furrowed his brow, feeling the weight of his alien identity pressing down. “As an alien, I’m trying to understand. Isn’t it customary for a guy to ask a girl out?”
“Not anymore. It’s about who has the guts to make the first move,” Holden said, sipping water, his confidence wavering slightly as he glanced at Barrett, revealing a twinge of insecurity. Barrett recognized that vulnerability, feeling less alone in the moment.
“Jakov, how long have you been dating my sister?” Barrett shifted the focus, needing a sense of normalcy, his eyes darting to Jakov, who was busy adjusting the straps on his kettlebell.
“It’s been a couple of years since high school. You should remember; you’re her twin,” Jakov said, rolling his eyes with a grin, his relaxed posture betraying the ease he felt in the conversation. “It’s easier now that I’m not just a kid worried about impressing everyone.”
Barrett envied Jakov’s clarity, wishing he could shed his own confusion. He sighed, the familiar pang of loneliness creeping in. “I’m still trying to figure out human mating rituals. Why can some guys easily find girls, but others like me can’t?”
“Before Nikita, I couldn’t get a girl to like me,” Tate admitted, his bravado fading as he leaned against the wall, arms crossed defensively. The pressure of being future king weighed heavily, even in the gym, and the weight of his words hung in the air.
Barrett felt a surge of solidarity; they were all struggling.
“I don't have a girlfriend right now,” Holden said defensively, his voice rising slightly as he shifted on the machine, avoiding eye contact. “Even though girls always come up wanting to be my boyfriend.”
His bravado felt thin, like a poorly constructed façade.
Barrett appreciated this glimpse of authenticity.
“I’ve never dated yet,” Kenny said proudly, puffing out his chest as he shrugged, but the movement was forced, hiding uncertainty beneath the surface.
Barrett raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. “Kenny, you’ve never dated?”
“Nope. And I’m not sure I want to,” Kenny said seriously, his voice dropping as he glanced at the floor, the weight of his mother’s expectations evident in his demeanor. “My mother is busy training us for a future war in the vampire world.”
The gravity of his words hung heavily in the air, a stark reminder of their shared responsibilities. Barrett admired Kenny's strength, even as dread loomed over him.
“I overheard Skylar saying she has a crush on you,” Barrett said, trying to lighten the mood, a teasing smile forming despite his own insecurities.
“Oh shit. I’m not even interested in dating her,” Kenny replied, rolling his eyes, a hint of annoyance crinkling his forehead, as if the mere thought was an inconvenience.
Feeling the weight of his own expectations, Barrett thought, At least I’m not the only one struggling. But then, a wave of isolation washed over him. As an alien prince, he often felt like an outsider, grappling with the dual pressures of fitting in with his friends while navigating his own identity. He wished he could bridge that gap, to feel like he belonged.
“Barrett, do you mind if we switch places?” Kenny asked, sitting up on the bench and glancing at the punching bag, determination sparking in his eyes. “I mean, me on the bag and you on the bench press.”
“Okay,” Barrett replied, grateful for the distraction as he took off the gloves and wiped the sweat from his brow, the fabric damp with anxiety.
Tumblr media
“I only had one date with Skylar, and it was a disaster,” Holden said, shaking his head, his shoulders slumping slightly as he recalled the memory. “She was so clingy it suffocated me.” The vulnerability in his voice revealed the weight of expectations he felt to conform.
Barrett related to Holden’s experience; the pressure was exhausting.
“So that’s why you were hiding in the laundry room when she asked about a love spell?” Tate chuckled, nudging Holden playfully, the camaraderie easing the tension. But Holden felt a flicker of embarrassment, wishing he could brush off the incident, his cheeks flushing slightly.
“Yep. Didn’t want to embarrass myself,” Holden admitted, his voice revealing vulnerability as he glanced down, the weight of expectations suffocating him.
Kenny resumed striking the punching bag, the sound echoing in the quieter gym, his movements sharp and deliberate. Barrett reflected on how easily his friends connected with women, feeling that his alien heritage set him apart. What if someone recognized him at the bar? The thought of judgment made his stomach churn.
“Guys, I have another question,” Barrett finally said, breaking the silence, his voice steady but laced with apprehension. “What’s the best way to approach a woman? I’m an alien who’s never had a girlfriend.”
“Let me guess,” said Holden, playful yet serious, leaning forward with a smirk. “You want to know how to approach a woman, whether she’s taken or single.”
“Yes.”
“Well, tonight is your lucky night. It’s guys' night out at the Gnome’s Arms in Henford-on-Bagley. Why don’t we go and show Barrett how to pick up women?” Kenny exclaimed, his enthusiasm infectious as he clapped Barrett on the shoulder, the camaraderie lifting the weight in the air.
Barrett felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The thought of going out filled him with dread, a storm of anxiety brewing inside him. He wanted to connect, but the fear of rejection loomed large, threatening to drown him. Would he be exposed as the alien he was? The thought made him feel more vulnerable than ever.
The guys cheered, their enthusiasm lifting the atmosphere, and with renewed energy, they started packing up their gear, ready for camaraderie and learning. Barrett took a deep breath, hoping tonight wouldn’t turn into another reminder of how different he truly was.

Chapter: Taking a Break
Madeline and Lyla just got off the bus at the Ancient Ruins next to the Olde Platz in Windenburg. The ruins stood tall against the brilliant blue sky, their white stone gleaming in the sunlight, surrounded by lush green grass that swayed gently in the breeze. Lyla had heard so much about it, but she’d never visited before.
Tumblr media
“I’m glad we’re taking a break from university and that crazy house,” said Madeline.
“Me too,” answered Lyla. “Plus, taking a break from our brothers and Jakov.”
“That’s true. Just the two of us.”
“But I have to admit, I miss Jakov a little.”Lyla replied, winking.
Madeline smiled, a hint of mischief in her eyes. “Oh really? I thought you couldn’t stand him when he hogged the couch during movie nights.”
Lyla chuckled. “That’s true, but he does have a certain charm. And he makes the best popcorn.”
“Popcorn? You’re telling me you miss him for popcorn?” Madeline teased.
“Hey, it’s gourmet popcorn! You wouldn’t understand,” Lyla shot back playfully.
As they approached the ruins, Lyla was amazed at their size, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. The towering stone structures were adorned with intricate carvings, their surfaces weathered yet majestic, whispering secrets of a time long past. “These structures have so much history,” she breathed, running her fingers along the cool, rough stone.
Madeline soon felt bored. “I don’t know what’s so special about these ruins. They just look like… rocks.”
“My family wants me and my siblings to research and learn everything about the Earth, including its history,” Lyla explained, glancing at the ancient stones.
Madeline rolled her eyes. “Ugh, that sounds like a headache! But hey, speaking of headaches, did Jakov text you? He was acting all moody before we left.”
Lyla sighed, a small frown crossing her face. “He was just worried about school. He thinks he should be studying right now instead of... this.” She pulled out her phone and glanced at a message from Jakov: “Hope you’re having fun! Don’t forget to check in, okay?”
“Tell him to lighten up! You need to have fun too. Besides, he should see that it’s okay to take a break sometimes,” Madeline replied, her tone playful.
“Maybe I’ll text him later,” Lyla said, looking more thoughtful. “He just wants to make sure I’m okay. He can be sweet like that.” She typed a quick response: “I’m good! Exploring the ruins with Madeline. No need to worry!”
Madeline smirked. “Sweet? It's more like being overprotective! Just remember, you need your space too.”
Lyla laughed. “You’re right. But I can’t help it if I like having him around.” She glanced at her phone again, noticing Jakov’s follow-up message: “Just checking! You know I worry, right?”
Madeline spotted a woman in a beautiful dress nearby. “Wow, she looks like a goddess! But that dress doesn’t suit her hair, and those shoes… yikes.”
“Why do you care what she looks like?” asked Lyla. “She’s a perfect example of fashion! And you look beautiful yourself.”
“Thanks, but I’d rather be like you and lose all that weight,” Madeline replied, glancing at Lyla’s figure.
“Madeline, you have that perfect hourglass shape that all men adore. You got that from your mother,” said Lyla, nudging her playfully.
“True, but it’s exhausting! I feel like I’m on a never-ending fashion runway,” Madeline joked, striking a pose with an exaggerated model face.
Lyla laughed. “Well, if you’re on a runway, I’m clearly a UFO landing!”
Lyla noticed some old stones and became intrigued. “This place is amazing!” she exclaimed.
“Seriously? How can you get so excited over a bunch of rocks?” Madeline asked, unimpressed.
“These rocks were used for homes and buildings thousands of years ago. It’s a shame this place has crumbled,” Lyla explained passionately, her voice tinged with a longing for connection to the past.
“Whatever,” Madeline said. “By the way, why don’t you show me your alien form? I always see you in your human form.”
"It's complicated," said Lyla.
Madeline gave her a strange look. “You mean, you can't change into it?”
"I can," answered Lyla, "but I am not sure how you humans will react to seeing my true form."
"Well, I'm not scared," said Madeline.
Lyla didn't want Madeline to think she was a freak. “Alright, if you insist,” said Lyla, looking around to make sure there weren’t many people nearby. She quickly and magically changed her skin to reveal her bald blue skin, wearing only red underwear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"See, this is what I look like," said Lyla, showing her arms, legs, and stomach.
Madeline was surprised and confused. "So, you're a bald alien that wears underwear?"
"Yeah, I’m so used to being in my human form that I always forget to dress properly," answered Lyla. "But let me change back before someone sees us."
With a swift motion, Lyla transformed back into her human form, her blonde hair and clothes intact. She felt relieved to be hidden from prying eyes. But beneath her laughter, there was a flicker of anxiety.
Madeline noticed her hesitation. “You know, it’s okay to be different. I mean, I feel it, too, being a mermaid. Sometimes, I worry about what people think when I transform.”
Lyla’s expression softened. “I get that. I often feel like I have to hide part of who I am. It’s like I’m living two lives. Jakov always tells me I should embrace who I am, but it’s not that simple.”
Madeline nodded, her voice turning serious. “Exactly! Sometimes, I wish I could just be myself without worrying about expectations or judgment. I mean, look at my brother, Holden. He’s a king-in-training and seems to have no problem getting girls. I wish I had his confidence.”
Madeline smiled softly. “And what about Barrett? He’s always been a bit of a mystery to me. I wonder if he’s feeling the pressure to find someone too.”
Lyla shrugged. “He might be, but he never shows it. I think he just needs a little nudge. Maybe your brother or one of the other guys would help him meet someone special. I just hope he doesn’t take after Jakov and worry too much.”
Just then, Madeline spotted a bucket of water balloons and couldn’t resist. She started throwing them at Lyla, who was not amused.
“Madeline! That is not funny!” Lyla protested, laughing despite herself.
Tumblr media
“Can’t take the heat, or water?” Madeline teased.
“Okay, now it’s a water fight!” Lyla shot back, grabbing a balloon and retaliating.
“I hope you’re ready for my water balloon skills! They’re out of this world!” Madeline declared dramatically.
“Oh, please! You couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn!” Lyla shot back, ducking just in time.
They laughed like schoolgirls, splashing water and forgetting their worries. But the underlying tension about their identities lingered in the air.
“Is this another way that humans have fun?” Lyla asked, breathless.
“Yes!” Madeline shouted, then changed the subject. “I’m thirsty. Why don’t we head to one of the beaches in Sulani and relax for a while?”
“Okay,” Lyla agreed. “I can always do more research online later.” She checked her phone again, seeing another message from Jakov: “Are you sure you’re okay? I can come to meet you.”
Madeline rolled her eyes. “Should I text him that I’m about to be abducted by aliens?”
“Please don’t! I’d rather not have him come to my rescue while I’m swimming in the ocean ” Lyla laughed.
As they left the ruins, Madeline asked, “So, do you miss the water yet?”
“Of course!,” Lyla replied, her thoughts still on Jakov’s concern. “Maybe I should text him that I’m fine.”
“Maybe we should take a quick swim in the ocean before sundown,” Madeline suggested.
“Okay, since it’s just the two of us,” Lyla answered.
_____
They arrived at the beach, where the golden sand shimmered under the sun, inviting them to dive into the cool, azure waves. Children laughed and splashed nearby, building sandcastles that sparkled with seashell adornments. The salty breeze carried the scent of sunscreen and the sound of cheerful chatter, creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation. They walked all the way across the beach into the ocean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Madeline transformed into her mermaid form, her iridescent tail glimmering in the sunlight. With a splash, she dove into the water, reveling in its refreshing embrace. Meanwhile, Lyla spotted a green and white whale-shaped float with its tail sticking up. She used it to shield herself from the sun as she relaxed.
“Wow, the water feels nice!” Madeline called out, floating effortlessly, her hair streaming behind her like seaweed.
“Yes, it does,” Lyla replied, lounging back on the float, soaking in the warm rays. She smiled, enjoying her moment of tranquility.
After a while, Lyla decided it was time to get out. She gracefully floated back to the shore, her feet finding the warm sand as she stepped onto the beach. Spotting a nearby lounge chair, she settled into it, relishing the sun's warmth.
Madeline laughed, then swam back toward the shore, her tail transforming into legs as she stepped onto the warm sand. She brushed droplets from her skin and headed for the lounge chair beside Lyla, sinking into the cushions with a contented sigh. “I just wish there was a way for you to get a tan,” she mused, her voice bright with cheer.
Tumblr media
“Oh, no! That wouldn’t work for me since I’m not from this planet,” Lyla quipped, though a hint of sadness crept into her voice.
“Maybe you could get a spray tan?” Madeline suggested, giggling. “I hear they make you look like you’ve just returned from a tropical vacation!”
“Or a cosmic disaster!” Lyla laughed. “Imagine me showing up at school with a tan that glows in the dark.”
As they relaxed in their lounge chairs, the sun dipped low in the sky, painting the horizon with hues of orange and pink. “It’s starting to get dark,” Lyla noted, glancing at the vibrant sunset. “We should head back.”
“I agree,” Madeline said, her voice tinged with reluctance. They stood up, brushing sand off their legs, and began to walk home, chatting animatedly about their day. But the lingering thoughts of their identities and the weight of their royal expectations hung in the air as they walked, the colors of the sunset fading behind them.

Chapter 3: The Date
Class is finally finished. Tate floats back to “Little Castle” in a good mood. He has a date tonight with Nikita. That’s one of two things that have been going right so far in his experience at university over the past two weeks.
Of course, as a ghost from a royal family, he’s still adjusting to life away from his family and living on his own. Sometimes, he wonders if he’s truly ready for this independence. What if I mess everything up? He learned never to prank Skylar again and that ghosts can get hangovers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s what he experienced yesterday after a night of partying in the bar room, celebrating Kenny, Summer, Jakov, Lyla, and Barrett moving in and becoming the new roommates. Then there was that other embarrassing moment after Lyla and Barrett did the keg stand, prompting Tate to ask Kenny to do the same. He agreed to lift Tate up. Tate was holding the hose on the keg, but just before it reached his mouth, the beer came out and hit him in the nose. How could I have thought that was a good idea? Tate was shocked as the beer splashed on his face, causing the hose to slip from his hands. Kenny, thinking that ghosts can float high in the air, suddenly dropped Tate face-first onto the ground. Everyone was laughing at him, including Kenny. But Tate got up and decided to try again, with the same results. I shouldn’t have pushed my luck. He wanted to give it another shot, but Jakov stopped him.
After a night of drinks and partying, Tate found himself with a massive hangover the very next morning.
Thankfully, Tate is still in one piece, both happy and nervous about tonight’s date with Nikita at the Futures and Past Mirage Canyon Museum in Oasis Springs. What if she doesn’t like me? However, he doesn’t know much about art, but it's better to experience something new every day. I just hope I don’t embarrass myself.
He approached the door of the mansion, took out his keys, and opened the door. He quickly said hi to whoever was in the kitchen and headed straight to his room to change his clothes. As he looked at himself in the mirror, he wondered, Will she think I look good? I want to make a good impression. He changed into a dress shirt and pants and went to look for Nikita, but he couldn’t find her anywhere in the house.
So he went to the living room on the main floor, where Kenny and Madeline were sitting and watching TV.
“Have any of you seen Nikita?” he inquired.
“Oh, Kenny here hypnotized her into going to the blood bank on campus to donate some blood,” Madeline replied, nudging Kenny, who was sitting beside her.
“What the fuck for?” Tate exclaimed, surprised that Kenny did such a thing. This better not ruin our date.
“It’s for a good cause,” Kenny muttered calmly.
“Was this good cause giving blood to the sick or to you vampires?”
“Either one,” Kenny shrugged. “Why’d you ask?”
“I have a date with her tonight.”
“I didn’t know that. But don’t worry, she’ll be fine when she gets back. Then the two of you can go on your date.”
Just as Kenny finished speaking, the doorbell rang. Tate got up to answer it, and it was Nikita, still in a trance, staring out into space but walking almost zombie-like. She looks so beautiful, even like this, he thought, but the sight worried him.
Tate let her in and brought her into the living room.
“As you were saying, Kenny,” Tate remarked, trying to lighten the mood.
“What?” Kenny replied, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“She’s still in her trance state,” Tate added, as worry creeped into his voice.
Madeline got up and looked at Nikita. “I’m going to take Nikita upstairs and help her get dressed for your date,” she said. “Hopefully, she’ll be out of it soon.”
Madeline took Nikita by the hand and led her upstairs.
“Thanks for ruining my date tonight,” Tate grumbled.
“Don’t worry about it,” Kenny assured him. “She’ll be out of it before the two of you get to wherever you’re going.”
“I’m not so sure about that,” Tate replied, feeling a knot of anxiety in his stomach.
But Madeline and Nikita came downstairs a short while later. Nikita was still in her zombie-like trance. However, Madeline did a great job dressing Nikita in a red and black dress, making her look beautiful. How did she pull that off? She looks stunning.
The doorbell rang again. Tate answered it, and it was the limo driver coming to pick them up. Tate then grabbed Nikita by the hand and said goodbye to both Madeline and Kenny before they both went on their date.
___________________________
They arrived at the Futures and Past Mirage Canyon Museum in Oasis Springs. The modern building loomed before them, sleek and minimalistic, exuding an upscale vibe that felt both intimidating and exciting. This is it. I hope she enjoys this.
As they stepped inside, the air was cool and crisp, infused with the faint scent of polished glass and fresh paint. The museum was quiet, save for the soft whispers of a few visitors, adding to the serene atmosphere. Tate could hear the gentle echo of their footsteps on the marble floors, creating a rhythm that felt oddly calming.
Tate paid the entry fee for both of them, and they went inside. The expansive space was filled with contemporary art that seemed to command attention without being overwhelming. Each piece was carefully curated, allowing the viewer to focus on the art itself. I wish I could reach her. She seems so far away.
As they started walking around the museum, Tate noticed the interplay of light and shadow, creating a dynamic ambiance that felt alive. The walls, painted in soft whites and grays, accentuated the vibrant colors of the artwork. Tate tried to snap Nikita out of her trance by saying her name over and over and shaking her a bit, but nothing worked. He could feel frustration bubbling beneath the surface. What’s going on? I need her to be here with me.
Tumblr media
So he made the best of the date and looked at some artwork. Nikita followed him, still staring into space. The first piece they saw was a bust of a woman on top of one of those fancy stands with one triangle at the bottom and an inverted triangle at the top where the bust was placed. Tate read the placard on the side. The title of the sculpture was "Bust of Aphrodite" by Vito Corrado. This is beautiful, but I wish she could appreciate it with me.
They continued the tour of other art pieces, with Nikita still in a haze. Tate noticed a vibrant painting of swirling colors and abstract shapes. What does this even mean? He felt unsure but wanted to say something meaningful to her. “Isn’t it incredible how art can evoke so many emotions?” he suggested, hoping to spark a reaction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn’t until they went up to the second floor and looked at a painting of a mountain that Nikita finally emerged from her trance. She put her hands to her forehead.
“What a headache,” she murmured. “Where am I?”
“You’re on a date with me at the Futures and Past Mirage Canyon Museum in Oasis Springs,” Tate replied, his voice warm with relief. “Remember that we had a date?”
“I do,” said Nikita, shaking her head as if trying to clear it. “But how did I end up here?”
Nikita looked down at her dress. “I don’t even remember changing into this dress.”
“Kenny put you in a trance so you could donate your blood, and Madeline was the one who dressed you up.”
“Typical Kenny. And Madeline has good taste in clothes,” Nikita commented, a playful smile emerging. “What painting are we looking at?”
“It’s a picture of a mountain by Vito Corrado called 'The Mountain of Possibilities,'” Tate explained. “It is said that when a person climbs the mountain, it symbolizes getting rid of their problems. The snowy landscape and the dark clouds behind the mountain suggest a stormy road ahead, but the summit represents hope, a bright future, and possibilities. The artist painted this piece based on an ancient legend. So, how do you feel about it?” Tate asked, eager to connect more with her.
Nikita smiled. “Even though I still have a headache, I feel great. But I thought you weren’t into fine arts.”
“Well, I am learning more. Let’s continue with this date.” I want to impress her. I really do.
They both continued to look at more artwork until they reached the third floor. That was the end of the tour. Nikita turned to Tate and said, “Tate, I was still in a trance at the beginning of our date?”
“You were,” Tate confirmed softly.
“I’m sorry, then,” she said, looking genuinely contrite.
“Don’t be,” Tate reassured her. “It’s not your fault.”
“I know,” said Nikita, then she hesitated, biting her lip. “But I was really looking forward to this. It’s just… I feel like I missed so much.”
Tate nodded, his heart racing. “I wanted to share this experience with you. It’s important to me. You’re important to me.”
Tumblr media
Nikita smiled, a playful glint in her eyes. “So, how about I make it up to you by going home and shutting the door to either yours or my bedroom so that we can have a little private  intimate moment to ourselves?”
Tate’s heart raced, his ghostly form turning pink with excitement. “Are you serious?” he asked, trying to gauge her intent. “You really want to?”
Nikita tilted her head, her expression softening. “I do. I mean, if you’re okay with it. I just feel this connection with you, and I want to explore it more.”
Tate took a deep breath, feeling the moment shift. “I want that too,” he replied, his voice low. “But I also want to make sure it’s right for both of us. We can take our time, you know?”
Nikita nodded, her smile widening. “That sounds perfect. But… What if we’re not ready for this? What if it changes everything?”
Tate felt a knot in his stomach. “I guess we’ll just have to figure it out together, won’t we?”
Tumblr media
With that, they kissed and left the museum, the thrill of the evening hanging in the air alongside an unspoken question about what lay ahead.

Chapter: Catching Up
Nikita parked her car right outside the Hare and Hedgehog Café in Windenburg. The night wrapped around her like a soft blanket, illuminated by the warm glow of street lamps. She waited outside for a bit until she saw her sister Betsy's car in the parking lot. Her heart raced with a mix of excitement and anxiety as she thought about their conversation. Would they talk about their lives, or would she feel like an outsider again?
“Betsy, how have you been?”
“I’ve been doing well. Work is great.”
They both went into the café, greeted by the inviting atmosphere. Latin music played softly in the background, wrapping around them like a comforting hug. The red brick walls added a rustic charm, while the barista counter gleamed with polished laminate countertop and glass. The café had a cozy, laid-back feel, perfect for a night out. They stood in a small line to get some coffee.
“Still no boyfriends yet?”
“No, but I am still on that dating app that I told you about.”
The barista was taking his sweet time making the coffee for the customer in front of them. Nikita shifted her weight from one foot to the other, feeling the familiar pang of impatience. She wondered if her life would ever feel as stable and predictable as Betsy's.
"What do you think, Betsy? I am not sure what kind of coffee I should get; it's always the hardest choice," Nikita said, trying to focus on the menu boards instead of the swirling thoughts in her mind.
"You always go with the cappuccino, so get that one. And I am going to get a black tea," Betsy said as they moved up the line. Nikita appreciated her sister’s certainty; it was comforting in a world that often felt overwhelming.
The person in front of them got her coffee and sat at a table.
Tumblr media
“Hi, can I get a medium cappuccino with cream and sugar?” asked Nikita.
“And I will have a black tea,” answered Betsy.
They waited until the barista gave them their drinks, and Betsy paid for both of them.
As soon as they were out of the line, Nikita took a sip from her coffee.
"Oh, I missed the coffee from this place. It is just so good," said Nikita, savoring the familiar taste. It reminded her of simpler times, moments shared with friends and family.
"You are such a coffee addict, Niki. That's why we always have to come here when we hang out together," said Betsy, teasingly.
"Well, you never complain, sis," Nikita shot back with a smirk. "Besides, I need my caffeine to keep up with your gossip."
Betsy laughed, her eyes sparkling. “Remember that time we overheard Mom and Dad arguing about the color of the curtains? I thought they were going to have a fight over it!”
Nikita chuckled, shaking her head. “I still can’t believe we hid behind the sofa, thinking we’d get caught. I thought I’d never hear the end of it!”
They found a place to sit right next to the window, on plush red cushions of two loveseats, with a glass coffee table in front of them. The night outside was cool and clear, contrasting with the cozy glow of the café. The warmth and laughter inside felt like a refuge, a stark contrast to the coolness and isolation of "Little Castle," where the weight of royal expectations loomed heavily over her.
“Have you seen our dear queen sister, Macie?” asked Nikita. “How is she and the new baby princess, Violet, doing?”
"Macie and I had lunch yesterday. I can't believe how much the little Violet is growing; she is already six months old," Betsy said excitedly. "She's really adorable. I have some photos; hold on. Let me show you."
Betsy took out her phone from her purse and opened her gallery. Nikita felt a rush of happiness for her sister but also a twinge of envy. How was it that everyone else seemed to be thriving, while she felt stuck in a whirlwind of uncertainty?
"See, Macie took her to the park the other day, and the baby had the cutest little yellow hat..."
“How about her husband, Kristofer?” asked Nikita.
“Mentally, he’s doing better since he’s no longer a werewolf. He’s less paranoid, and he has his anger issues under control. Plus, he’s a big kid whenever he’s around Violet.”
“Well, they are both lucky. And I’m pretty sure that Don is having fun being the young uncle,” said Nikita, taking a sip of her coffee and a few more. She couldn’t help but think how she longed for that kind of stability and happiness in her own life.
“He is! And he sometimes babysits her when the nanny finishes work and Macie and Kristofer are out on Royal Duty,” Betsy said. “It’s a great learning experience for him to see that parenting is not all fun and games.”
“Yeah, I can only imagine how he juggles that with his teenage life,” Nikita replied, a hint of concern creeping into her voice. “I hope he knows he can talk to us if things get overwhelming.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Betsy nodded. “It’s important, especially with everything going on. Speaking of which, how about you, Nikita? How is school going?”
"School is fine. I am a little bit worried because the midterm exams are coming up soon, and I have a test in two weeks." The weight of expectations pressed down on her like a heavy cloak.
"Don't worry too much, sis. I'm sure you are going to pass the exam and do well on the midterm," said Betsy, her tone sincere but playful. “And if not, just tell them you’re a royal in training. That should buy you some sympathy points!”
“Thanks,” Nikita replied, though she felt the doubt creeping back in. What if she didn’t measure up? What if her royal status meant everyone expected more from her?
“Are you doing anything this week?” asked Betsy.
“Well, tomorrow I have a date with Tate Greywind,” answered Nikita, trying to sound casual.
“The future ghost king of Ravenwood! Why him?” Betsy raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued.
“I thought that you already knew that I wasn’t into pretty boys like Holden or Kenny,” answered Nikita. “Besides, Tate and I have a lot in common.”
"Well, then you are the only woman in the world who does not like Holden and his charm. Or Kenny’s for that matter."
“Why would I want to be one of many women hanging on to their every move?” The thought made her feel claustrophobic. She craved authenticity, not the superficiality she often encountered.
Betsy just rolled her eyes and sipped her tea. “I’m glad that you finally have a boyfriend,” she said, a teasing smile spreading across her face. “Just don't let him turn you into a lovesick fool like Macie!”
“Our first date is tomorrow night at the Futures and Past Mirage Canyon Museum in Oasis Springs.” Nikita felt a flutter of excitement mixed with anxiety. Would it be another chance to connect, or another reminder of her loneliness? The thought of being in a new romantic situation sent her mind racing. What if she stumbled over her words? What if they had nothing to talk about, and it turned awkward?
And what if her relationship with Tate became complicated by his royal obligations? Dating a future ghost king might come with challenges she hadn’t even considered—like navigating the expectations of his mysterious world, or the potential for their families to clash in ways she couldn’t yet foresee.
The café's cozy ambiance felt worlds away from the uncertainty of the date. As she sat there, she couldn't help but draw parallels between this moment and when she first moved in with her roommates. Back then, she had felt a similar rush of emotions—excitement tinged with fear, anticipation shadowed by doubt. Would she be accepted? Would they see her as she truly was, or would she remain an outsider looking in?
“Good luck!” Betsy’s cheerful voice pulled her back to the present.
The sisters continued chatting a bit longer, reminiscing about their childhood adventures and the silly moments that made their bond strong.
“We gotta go. I have class first thing tomorrow morning,” Nikita said as she glanced at her watch.
"Sure thing, sis. It was great catching up."
Nikita and Betsy hugged goodbye and went their separate ways. As she walked back to her car, the cozy, laid-back vibe of the café lingered in her mind. It was a stark contrast to her new home in Little Castle, where the weight of expectations felt stifling, and the coolness of the grand halls echoed with silence.
The thought of her upcoming date with Tate stirred both excitement and dread within her. She hoped the warmth of the café could carry her through the uncertainty of her new life—one filled with royal obligations and the shadow of her family's expectations. In that moment, Nikita couldn't shake the feeling that she was still searching for her place in this new life—one filled with uncertainties, and the hope that maybe, just maybe, she could carve out a space where she truly belonged.

When Summer Embers first told her parents that she got accepted to the University of Britechester to study Medicine, no one was surprised. She had seen other kids her age beaming with pride as their parents celebrated their future as doctors or lawyers.
But Summer's upbringing was anything but typical. As the daughter of Sage Morgyn Embers and Queen Ashley, she was the future heir to the throne. If you told a Glimmerbrook parent that you wanted to be a doctor or healer, they wouldn't bat an eye; spellcasters heal, but they can also wield destruction. Yet, Summer's heart was set on healing. She wanted to help people in a way that felt genuine and impactful, and that’s why she wanted to be a doctor.
Summer wasn’t alone in her family; she had three younger brothers: Rhett and twins Emmett and Everett. She would miss them dearly. They were always close, and her parents, big kids at heart, taught them spells, magic tricks, and many life lessons. Summer recalled the time she watched her father show one of the twins a card trick, how wide-eyed and impressed he was. That love for children was now part of her.
Of course, her family didn’t live a happily-ever-after life. They fought like everyone else—that’s just life. And she remembered all the cats they had, learning about death when Peanut passed away. They have had other cats since then.
Now, she stood outside her new residence, affectionately called “Little Castle.” She was not alone. She was with Lyla Herring, the future queen of the aliens from Oasis Springs, who looked radiant after her recent weight loss; her twin brother Barrett; the future king of the vampires, Kenny Masters; and Jakov Denny, one of the six werewolf Denny royalty and Lyla’s boyfriend. Jakov, restless and impatient, crossed his arms.
“This is stupid,” he grumbled. “Why don’t they just let us in already?”
“Jakov, you've been here a million times thanks to your four older siblings. Your family almost owns this place,” Summer replied, rolling her eyes. “The rest of us haven’t even set foot inside yet.”
At that moment, Nikita Pruitt emerged from the door. “Hello, everyone! You all know me as Princess Nikita of Bridleton Bay. I’ll be your tour guide today.”
“Yeah, we definitely need a tour,” Jakov said, sarcasm dripping from his voice.
“Jakov. Try to contain your enthusiasm,” Nikita shot back, smirking.
“Yeah, right,” he replied, making a face.
“Anyway, let’s get on with the tour,” Nikita said, motioning for everyone to follow.
As Summer stepped inside, a wave of emotions washed over her. This place felt like a fresh start, yet it also loomed as a daunting challenge. She took a moment to look around; the foyer was vast, and she could already picture lively gatherings filling this space.
Tumblr media
“So, on the left is a small sitting area and the dining room, but let’s check out the kitchen first,” Nikita said, leading the way.
They walked toward a kitchen that felt like a small apartment, complete with all the essentials. “The kitchen has everything you need: an oven, a microwave, a fridge, and a dishwasher,” Nikita explained with a flourish.
Then they moved through an open entrance into the living room, where the future ghost king, Tate, sat at a desk, typing away.
“Hey, everyone!” he greeted without looking up.
“We're on a tour,” Nikita said, guiding the group further.
“Enjoy!” Tate replied, returning to his assignment.
Summer noticed how quickly he was absorbed in his work. But she was surprised. It's also Tate’s first year of university. Yet he came to “Little Castle" a little earlier than the rest of them.
“And here's the living room,” Nikita announced as they entered a spacious area filled with a long sectional sofa and a Murphy bed. “This is where we’ll hang out. And yes, that’s a giant TV.”
“Where’s the bathroom?” Jakov asked, his focus shifting to snacks.
“There’s one next to the kitchen. More on the tour, I promise,” Nikita assured him.
They ascended the wooden stairs, with Nikita explaining, “So, there are seven bedrooms and one shared bathroom on each floor. This is the second floor, and it has three bedrooms. You’ll find out who sleeps where when you talk to them. But for now, let’s check out the first ground floor.”
Descending to the basement, they found a room with two massage tables and a study filled with desks and computers. Summer guessed that they needed all the tech they could get.
“How many floors are there in total?” Barrett asked, looking around.
“Just three,” answered Nikita.
Just then, someone unfamiliar to Summer emerged from the bathroom.
“Oh, everyone, this is Skylar Reich,” Nikita introduced. “She’s from an aristocratic family in Mt. Komorebi.
“Let me introduce you to everyone who is going to live here for the next semester. First, this is Lyla, future queen of the aliens in Oasis Springs, and her twin Barrett. Next to Lyla is Jakov, who is one of the members of the Denny family in Moonwood Hills.”
Skylar shook hands with everyone, her confidence radiating. “And this is Summer Embers,” Nikita continued. “The heir to the throne in Glimmerbrook.”
Tumblr media
“Hi, I’m Skylar,” she said, looking at Summer with keen interest. “So, you’re a future queen witch.”
“I guess that’s one way to put it,” Summer replied, feeling the weight of expectations settle on her.
“Can you make people fall in love?” Skylar asked, her tone playful yet probing.
“I’d rather not dabble in love spells,” Summer replied, her voice firm.
“Why not? Don’t you want to help people?” Skylar pushed, tilting her head.
“I follow the Glimmerbrook law: ‘Do as you will, but harm none,’” Summer explained. “Love spells can go horribly wrong, and I don’t want to be responsible for that.”
“I’d rather do a self-confidence spell on you. That sounds more useful,” Summer said, her expression serious.
At that moment, Tate descended the stairs, and another figure quickly slipped into one of the rooms. Summer recognized the aura of familiarity but couldn’t place the face.
“No, seriously, be Cupid and make someone fall in love with me,” Skylar insisted.
Tumblr media
“Not a problem. I can handle that,” Kenny chimed in, casually leaning against the wall. He then took a few steps back and a green mist wafted from his hands toward Skylar. She then became dazed, confused, and mumbled something incoherent.
Tumblr media
“Hey! What did you just do?” Summer exclaimed, watching as Skylar’s expression faded into confusion.
Kenny shrugged. “Just a little vampire mesmerism. She’ll be fine.”
“I wouldn’t have done that if I were you,” Tate interjected. “A few days ago, I pranked her. She then got angry and beat me up.”
“Yeah, but you’re a ghost,” Jakov retorted, rolling his eyes.
“Yeah, I know, know. Exactly!” Tate shot back. Then he turned his attention back to the vampire. “But Kenny, I wouldn’t have done that if I were you.”
“Kenny, what kind of spell was that you put on this poor girl?” asked Summer. She, Lyla, and Barrett helped Skylar out by going into someone’s bedroom to sit her down. Summer sat beside her. This bedroom had a queen-size bed and a TV on the wall. Nikita ran downstairs to get her a glass of water. Jakov was right next to Kenny. Summer sat right next to Skylar on the bed.
“Summer, it’s not a spell. I just hypnotized her,” Kenny insisted, stepping closer to the doorway of the room.
“Thanks, I guess,” Summer said, glancing around at her friends.
“Look, I just didn’t want her bugging you,” Kenny continued. “Besides, I feel that there is something off about her.”
“I felt it too,” agreed Summer. She then looked at the rest of the group. “Have any of you sensed it?”
“Absolutely,” Lyla agreed, nodding. “We all did. Didn’t we, Barrett and Jakov?”
“Yep,” answered Jakov.
“I did too,” answered Barrett.
Nikita returned with a glass of water.
“What did you do to her?” she asked Kenny.
“A little vampire mesmerism,” he repeated.
“How long will it last?” Nikita asked, concerned creeping into her voice.
“It’ll be a while,” Kenny assured her.
Nikita sat beside Skylar on the bed. “Skylar, drink some water,” she urged gently. But Skylar sat still, lost in her haze.
“Nikita, why don’t you put the water on the nightstand, and we can move on with the tour?” Summer suggested.
“Nah, why don’t we just stay here for a bit?” Jakov proposed, clearly enjoying the drama.
“Let’s keep moving,” Nikita decided, and the group continued the tour down to the second ground floor.
They passed a gym, and Nikita pointed out, “So, here’s the gym.” Everyone peeked in to see the equipment. “And right next to it is the swimming pool,” she continued, drawing attention to Madeline swimming gracefully in her mermaid form.
“On the other side of this floor is another bathroom and two bedrooms,” Nikita explained. “Let’s go one more flight down.”
They entered what looked like a bar area, filled with tables, a bar with stools, and various games like Ping Pong and billiards. The room had an old-world masculine vibe. But what caught Summer’s eye was a cauldron her mother had insisted on placing here before her departure. Her parents still wanted her to embrace her spellcaster heritage during her time at university.
Summer approached the cauldron, running her fingers over its surface. Instead of feeling overwhelming, it felt like a connection to her roots—a reminder of the magic that flowed through her family and the expectations that accompanied it.
After the tour, everyone gathered to discuss sleeping arrangements. Skylar, still recovering from Kenny’s spell, remained in the bedroom on the first ground floor.
______________________
As it approached supper time, everyone decided to celebrate the new arrivals in the bar. Madeline’s twin, Holden, joined them, and Skylar finally returned to her normal self.
A vampire butler was busy preparing soup in the cauldron, which bothered Summer. That cauldron wasn’t meant for cooking food. But she held her tongue, not wanting to stir the pot further.
As the group laughed, drank, and played games, Summer noticed a deck of tarot cards sitting on the bar. Her parents had taught her about them, but she struggled to remember the meanings of most cards, except for Death and the Tower. The Death card is all about change and not death in a literal sense. The Tower is a card that talks about the chaos in one’s life.
Summer picked up the deck, feeling a strange pull. She shuffled the cards and turned one over: it was the Advocate in Reverse. The bottom read:
“On trust and truth, on wisdom, intuitions. Break free from the commonplace standard tradition! Sharing ideas or meeting someone new is desired.”
Tumblr media
This was intriguing. The Advocate card in reverse warned against getting involved with people who might not be what they seem or indicated that relationships weren’t what they appeared.
A sense of foreboding washed over her as she glanced at her roommates, wondering if any might hide secrets that could complicate her life at the university. The pressure of fitting in while maintaining her identity as the future queen weighed heavily on her. Would her royal lineage overshadow her efforts to carve her own path? Would her desire to be a healer clash with the expectations of her peers?
As she looked back at the card, she realized that adapting to university life would involve navigating complex social dynamics alongside her academic challenges.
Determined to explore the significance of the cards further, Summer kept the deck close. They felt like a compass for the challenges ahead. While she knew not to take their messages too literally, the possibilities intrigued her.
Whatever happens, happens. It’s not up to the cards to determine one’s future; it’s up to the goddess herself. But perhaps, in this new chapter, they could guide her.
Instead of joining the others in celebration, Summer took the cards and headed upstairs to her new bedroom. Settling in, the weight of the cards in her hands comforted her. With thoughts swirling in her mind, the excitement and anxiety of the first day at Britechester University loomed ahead, and she finally drifted off to sleep, ready to face the unknown.

On trust and truth, on wisdom, intuitions. Break free from the commonplace standard tradition! Sharing ideas or meeting someone new is desired.
