I think that people also overlook Dee having a HUGE ego sometimes It’s pretty obvious in the ask Dee animation but it does not always work in his favor ( like getting in trouble for ordering a pizza on his parents card in that video ;0; or how he gave up on guitar since he just did not have the talent to )

So when it comes to Deavy I think that he would really try to downplay his own emotions hurting himself and Heavy because ‘he’s a good brother he should not feel that way’

But since he loves him so much he obviously would still flirt with him from time to time only to later feel terrible about it because he needs to just focus on his crush on Lif

Oh definitely. Dee's ego is one of the biggest contributing factors to the weirdness of their relationship, coupled with the fact that his ego takes big hits whenever he realizes that there are some things he just can't do. I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT, THOUGH, that a lot of these behaviors from Dee are a result of the standards pushed on him by his parents. Being the oldest child and the overachiever, he often does great things on the daily without getting an ounce of praise for them. He has to work twice as hard to get any ounce of recognition from Glam, whereas praise comes naturally to Heavy. Dee wants Glam’s approval SO bad, but Glam has this inherent bias due to Heavy being the youngest, Dee being “mature for his age”, and also the automatic bias that comes with him projecting a lot of his own issues onto Dee. All of that combined makes his inability to play guitar hit so much harder for him, because 1.) he let Glam down, 2.) he realized that there are some things that he can’t do, and 3.) Glam lashed out at him. Ouch 😭

Sorry for the impromptu segue I just really like that dynamic they have going on ahdhdgsg. ANYWAYS! In addition to his big ego problem, his ego is also really FRAGILE, which makes it hard for him to indulge in any relationship or situation where he’d be perceived as weak. He doesn’t want to let down his guard. That, in turn, makes it SUPER difficult for Dee to lower his barrier and actually connect with Heavy/admit his feelings. Obviously, him refusing to ever be honest with Heavy would end up causing a LOT of issues and harm on both ends, but Dee would be hard-pressed to care as long as he gets to keep his feelings to himself. Well, it’s not necessarily a situation where Dee wouldn’t CARE, exactly. It’s just that, given the choice between preserving Heavy’s feelings and keeping his own secrets, Dee would prioritize keeping his secrets first and foremost.

With them loving each other as much as they do, though, I feel like it would be impossible for them to not slip up at least once. That’s where I feel like the “Dee flirting with him and then going on like nothing happened” thing would occur. They’re going to slip up eventually, and, chances are, if they slip up once, they’re gonna slip up again. The issue is that Dee is going to indulge in this fling of theirs and then immediately turn around and act as though nothing happened, because he doesn’t want to make the commitment. And Heavy can’t do anything but just sit there, be confused by all of these weird mixed messages he’s getting, and probably overthink it and come to really bad conclusions about it all 😭 Like what else is he supposed to think when his brother kisses him into his mattress during the night, then won’t even look at him the next day?

YESSS YOU GET IT!

There are so many specific aspects of their relationship that I love, and I like how they all build upon each other to make it more and more complex. Like, I really enjoy depictions of them that are very “sunshine and rainbows”, because they DO have really cutesy moments with each other, and they do objectively love each other. But things get so much more conflicting when you factor in the taboo of them being brothers, Dee’s crush on Lif, Dee’s built-up resentment for Heavy (but that’s for another post, because that’s too long for me to put here lmao), etc.

I love how the more angsty aspects of their relationship overlap with the cute, lovey-dovey parts of it and have the potential to make it REALLY tense if it’s done right. In general, their relationship is super versatile and the way you portray it is up to your own preference, and, honestly, every portrayal is accurate to an extent. I definitely do wish that I saw more people pushing their relationship to its limits and depicting the more angsty stuff, though. (No shade though of course, because complex things like that can be REALLY hard to portray in an accurate way ahdhdhshhd) ((Also I’m guilty of sticking to more cutesy stuff when it comes to them))

The thing with Heavy being left confused over Dee’s mixed messages, in my opinion, would be a result of Dee being incredibly secretive about his feelings and motives. Dee himself is conflicted about who he wants and what he’s supposed to do, but instead of reaching out and trying to communicate about it, he’s going to keep it to himself, sit on his own growing tension, and end up affecting other people because of it. Because Dee doesn’t know how to rely on other people!!! He’s certain that he doesn’t need help, that he’s capable of dealing with it on his own, and it just ends up in him making the wrong decisions, hurting the people close to him, and still not telling them what’s wrong. Even though he’s INCREDIBLY intelligent academically, he’s still emotionally immature.

(Also if you like seeing more angsty stuff of them, one of my favorite Deavy fics is “Held” by ruinrunes on Ao3. It’s an almost 2k words long oneshot, and it manages to capture so much of the other side of their relationship SO well. I love how it pushes them to the furthest extent, but still stays true to their characterization and story. It takes a LOT of understanding of the characters to be able to stretch the canon so far and still be able to portray them in a way that’s accurate. I also really like their other two Deavy fics, so I recommend reading them!! Just heed the tag warnings lmao)
