What makes up a SCADA control system?
Industrial automation has eased up manufacturing processes like never before. HMI, PLC, SCADA, or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems are an essential part of industrial automation. A SCADA system has five essential components:
Human Machine Interface or HMI

Supervisory system
It is used to transfer data from the RTU, PLC, valves, sensors, etc. to the HMI. This system controls operations and monitors operations to support the SCADA system.
Remote Terminal Units or RTU and Programmable Logic Controllers or PLC
RTU are devices run by microprocessors. They are used to establish communication between equipment on the field and the SCADA system. They also receive commands from the master control system, which manages the field equipment.
PLC are digital control devices that gather and convert data from various input and output devices.
Communication infrastructure
It is an essential part of plants that are spread over a sizeable geographical place. The communication base for the SCADA system depends on the size and demands of the particular system. Few key points that need to be kept in mind while planning out the communication infrastructure are the current condition of the existing communication system, cost, speed of transmission, radio networks, etc.
SCADA Programming
Programming is a crucial part of the SCADA system since the right programming language ensures the safe operation of the system. Various programming languages are used for the SCADA system.
