Adopting a pet at risk or abandonment is an act of love that life will reward us with excellent company.
In the world, there are hundreds of animals that are daily rescued from the street or the countryside in order to avoid having a horrible and tragic end. Many of them have a lot of love to give and anxiously await a warm home and people who give affection.
The company of a pet has always been a bond of friendship between the two species, the animal and the human, both take care of each other and also benefit in different aspects. Many of us have had pets bought or adopted and the learning experience has been the same, the same feelings of camaraderie, loyalty, love, and friendship, then comes the reflection. How important is it to adopt?
“It’s not just the right thing to do; adoption is a reward.“

Like all important decisions, the adoption must be a consensus among all members of a family. It is important to ask some questions to reflect well before hosting a pet at home. - Why do you want an animal? Adopting an animal just for "fashion" or because "children have asked for a puppy for Christmas" usually ends up being a mistake. Remember that pets live around 10 to 15 years in the case of dogs, or up to 20 years in the case of cats. - Do you have time to take care of it, exercise it, bathe it or feed it? Pets cannot be ignored just because you are tired or busy. They need care and company every day. - Do you have the economic resources? Routine veterinary care, health emergencies, toys, food, accessories, daycare, training. All this entails costs that must be assumed. - Do you have enough space for an animal? Does your landlord allow you to have animals? What will you do with the animal if you move from your home, city or country? - Do you know who will take care of you when you go on vacation? Do you know the costs of a nursery or hotel for animals? - Are you prepared to maintain and care for your animal for the rest of your life? Adopting an animal is a commitment for life.
It may seem like a long list of questions, but many animals end up on the streets or in shelters because their guardians did not think about them before adopting.

If you wish to adopt a dog or cat, you can get in touch with shelters and passing homes in your city. Remember that if you can not adopt, you can help by sponsoring or volunteering.
The people in charge of the adoption processes, in addition to being very careful and meticulous with the choice of new families, must take into account the use of protocols both for the selection of the adopters and for the follow-up after delivering the animal, through home visits. This follow-up is fundamental since through it you can really know if the animal is well in your new home, it will allow you to measure the adaptation of it with your new family and it will really guarantee the success of the adoption. In addition to the follow-up, you can advise the guardians about the resolution of possible problems that may arise, preventing them from causing a new abandonment.
Miami-Dade Animal Services, its workers and volunteers, are committed to the welfare of pets and adapting to their new life with adopters.

Never abandon your pet. He is part of your life and your family and you should never leave her in distress. Today, thousands of pets end up in the street, abandoned, but we must become socially aware of this situation.
The majority of the abandoned animals are puppies, which are left lying in any inhospitable place or in simple garbage dumps, where they acquire diseases or simply die helplessly.
A pet is not a toy, and it deserves respect and dignified life. If you treat him with love, he will be your faithful companion for many years, so if you decide to have a pet, you must commit to treating him as someone who deserves the love and care of a member of your family.
That's why adoption is important. If you are determined to have a pet, before buying, consider adoption. There are many animals abandoned and collected in shelters, which if they do not find an owner end up being slaughtered.

Alex Muñoz, Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services, published a scholarly article in the Miami Herald entitled "Miami-Dade's animal shelter is now a model for other cities."
In this article, the author presents the challenges that face the institution due to the poor conditions in which animals often arrive at the center, both physical and traumatic. Also, it explains the effort made by workers for the recovery of these animals with the premise of saving and finding a home to 100% of them, a situation that is impossible due to the severity of some injuries. This, added to the growth of the No Kill movement and the injection of capital by the County has allowed the expansion of programs to save animals and the subsequent adoption of them.
In the column, very effective rhetoric is used to persuade the audience of the important work of the shelter within the community, appealing to emotions and sharing human values, but using a direct language.
The information in this column is very reliable because it is provided by the Director of the institution being analyzed, the one with the principal credential of having given 20 years to the public service in Miami-Dade. In addition, the data is provided by the County and was published by a reputable newspaper, giving credibility. As we mentioned earlier, the article appeals to the emotions and values of the audience when it gives examples of animals that have been saved in the center and the effort to achieve better conditions for the animals, showing the most human part of their mission. Besides, we find in writing a well-marked logic since the author cites facts, figures, and statistics to support his arguments.
"Miami-Dade's animal shelter is now a model for other cities" is aimed at a public audience because it is information of general interest to those of us who live in the County or to those who love animals. The author uses a simple and direct language, which does not use technical words or jargon, therefore directed to lay readers.
Personally, I consider the article very positive because it provides a vision of the work done by hundreds of people for the care of animals in this city. Likewise, it reveals an institution that is not very recognized despite the important role it performs in the community. In addition, it is very pleasant to read because it has a very fresh and simple vocabulary, providing examples of his mission and commitment. As a volunteer of Miami-Dade Animal Services, I can attest to the truthfulness of the information provided and the importance of the work of the center, but I believe that the Director should have set aside for the dozens of volunteers whom each day give their time to help in the functioning of the shelter, as well as inform about other programs that take place there.

During this semester, the Professional and Technical Writing class, led by Dr. Darrel Elmore, provided much help to the community. Each student put his time in events such as March for Education, AIDS Walk or beach clean-up at Virginia Key, among others.
These are very valuable experiences for our formation as people, but it also represents a small contribution that we can make to those most in need or to causes as important as education.
Personally, during this Spring, in addition to my volunteering at the Miami-Dade Animal Services, with the encouragement of our teacher, I created a blog to motivate adoption in this institution.
Also, I had the opportunity to meet the concerns of teachers and students of our County, and thus fight for a better investment in the school system for the benefit of our children, but also teachers who make so much effort every day to achieve better educational results.
Here, along with Farrel Liger, founder of non-profit organization 'Foundation of the World ", and Dr. Elmore, a very significant event was organized at the Wolfson Campus of Miami-Dade College, where in addition to raising funds the work of parents and educators in the training of children. This being a wonderful experience for my personal growth and a demonstration of our power by raising awareness on the purpose of fundraising for a better education.
These activities, made me better understand the "The Impact of Service Learning on Education" article, where it shows us that when we volunteering in activities that we like or that are part of our day to day, the rejoicing is even greater and "Students can enhance their education by applying what they are learning in their classroom to a real-life situation. " So it is important to volunteer in activities related to us in order to have greater availability and willingness in what we do, which may represent a few hours of our time, but much for those who helped.
This class has been one of the best experiences in my life as a student because it has allowed me to meet many valuable people for society and create a better citizen awareness while acquiring knowledge.
