Feirefiz is a knight and one of the main characters in the 13th century Middle High German poem “Parzival,” being Parzival’s stepbrother. This is less of a drawing and more of a compilation of “cool stuff” from history that also opposes the idea of Arthurian knights being exclusively Western European. Just like the anachronism and often unrealistic cultural mash-up in European depictions of Arthurian knights, I allowed myself some anachronism here—all parts of his clothing are region-accurate and fairly historically accurate in a broad sense, but aren’t strict in relation to chronology or an association with a single culture.
He is described as a “magpie” knight, the man with what in the modern days we would recognise as vitiligo. His father is Gamuret, a knight at the court of Arthur, and his mother is Belacane, the queen of the imaginary countries of Zassamank (and Assagog, likely). Belacane was described as a Moorish (Muslim) queen and as a woman with dark skin. The real inspirations behind her countries and culture are unknown, but for this picture, the source of the cultural details was Egypt in a broad time period between the 7th and 9th centuries—it seems to fit the best for reference behind the cultures of Zassamank and Assagog, being a region with a diverse population and, by that time, a heavily Muslim one too, which narrows down the number of regions Belacane’s countries could have been inspired by. In the text, I found a mention that one of her lands produced Persian samite, the silk fabric associated with Sassanid Persia, which makes sense in the context of Egyptian history—it was controlled first by the Sassanid Empire, and then by the Abbasid Empire, which was heavily influenced by Persia. The fabric pattern is actual Egyptian samite from the Abbasid period (link). The book mentions Baghdad, which provides another clue for the time period—Baghdad (in modern day Iraq) was founded during the Abbasid Empire in the area that used to be Babylon. An inspiration for his armour is this depiction of a legendary pre-Islamic poet-knight Antarah ibn Shaddad, a character in the Arabic knightly romance. Coincidentally, Antarah was also a person of mixed heritage. This image seems to be coming from an Egyptian source that is close in time to the chosen period (link).
