"unfortunate" is a my book for the October @areyoubookenough challenge. The theme was child. The paper fortune teller is a common children's game of chance. After choosing a cheerfully colored baby carriage the game begins with counting like the counting of days, weeks, and months women do when pregnant. The excitement of the game comes to an abrupt stop when the fortune revealed is one of eight possible unfortunate outcomes of pregnancy. Many women experience complications and/or loss during pregnancy, though social obligations keep us silent on such matters. Pregnancy is full of risk and chance. #pregnancyandinfantlossawareness #pregnancywoes #miscarriage #molarpregnancyawareness #pregnancycomplications #stillbirth #prochoiceisprolife #artistbooks #artistbook #bookartist #bookarts #fortuneteller #fortunetellergame #areyoubookenough_child https://www.instagram.com/p/CHgbAt_Jp1T/?igshid=1jmt3l5bkbffr

This book titled "Icare" is my submission for July's @areyoubookenough challenge. The theme was Sea. This book uses a section of the original Latin text from Book Eight of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" which tells the story of Daedalus and Icarus (Icare). The text moves through the book in a series of waves. A wing is constructed using found seagull feathers, wax, string and sticks at the point in the book that describes Daedalus' warning to his son that he should not fly too close to the sea or sun. Only a few tatty feathers remain at the end during Daedalus' lament for his lost son. #areyoubookenough_sea #ovid #metamorphoses #daedalus #icarus #artistbooks #bookarts #bookartist #seagulls #feathers #artistbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CDXtj7OJQYG/?igshid=1knqbncj8j2j5

Hand felted wool is the primary material in this book referencing the Burial in Woollen Acts 1666 – 1680 of the Parliament of England. In winter stayed late text is printed onto handmade cotton paper and then caringly pinned onto each felted wool blanket-like page. The narrative describes the hopeful expectation of a new baby with the coming spring, and the soon to follow miscarriage leaving only the expectation of spring. The repeated text “winter came early and stayed late” signifies the monotony of winter that continues on unknowingly. The few words demonstrate the quietness surrounding miscarriage.

what news is a flag book inspired by Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. The central image is a drawing of a quiet canal in Venice. Laundry hangs from a window; boats sit idly awaiting their chore; water gently ripples. No one visible. This serene scene is fragmented by the flags with text from Act 3 Scene 1 of Merchant of Venice printed on the backs. The text that is used here was originally spoken by the two characters Tubal and Shylock, but in this book they are used as words and thoughts of only one person, someone in search of a girl. Is she a lover? A friend? A relative? Both identities are unknown. The text, in contrasting fonts and colors, indicate both an aside spoken to the viewer and a thoughtful soliloquy. Desperate pleas for news of the girl is printed on the inside covers. what news
