2017 Running Review
2017 RAN by quickly.
Running was one of my favorite parts of this past year again as always, and I cannot wait to see what runs, workouts, races, challenges, and PRs 2018 brings! As a runner, I accomplished runs, workouts, & races I never thought would be possible for me. Here are some statistics & accomplishments from my 2017 running….
2017 FINAL SEASON
Final Track & Field Season (Season 11) with University of Redlands Track & Field (1/8/17 - 5/1/17)
2017 TOTALS
About 2,101.4 miles ran in 2017
Running Equipment: TomTom GPS Runner watch & my TomTom Spark 3 GPS running watch.Thank you to TomTom, Adidas, Nike, New Balance, & Saucony for the great gear & support while running this year!
I have been recording all of my runs, workouts, and races in my training book since the beginning of college running. Transitioned to recording online in the SET On Running Google Document for post-collegiate running.
Post Collegiate Running and training began for me in July after 2+ months off from running after college track ended. Arizona running was tough when I moved this summer in June as temperatures were usually 100-119 degrees. I did a lot of treadmill runs in the summer until the end of August and I created a personal Distance circuit which I love doing during lifting days. My Distance Pace & Recovery Pace have both dropped since I began getting back to high mileage since August and I have ran some recovery run & distance run PRs since then. I joined Sole Sports Running Club with Sole Sports Running Zone store in Scottsdale, AZ and have been running with them on most Tuesday and Thursday nights!
In 2017, I ran 13 races, including 8 races during my last Track season.
I ran 7 Lifetime PRs, including in the following race distances:
400 Meters - 51.40 800 Meters - 1:59.58 1,500 Meters - 4:10.09 4 Miles (6.43K) - 24:40 15,000 Meters (15K or 9.32 Miles) - 56:46 Half Marathon (13.10 Miles) - 1:21:11 Long Run - 18.03 Miles @ 6:25 Pace - 1:55:58
2017 Post Collegiate Races:
Global Energy Run 5K - 17:48 & 2nd place overall out of 458 runners & 2nd place in age group Veterans Day Run 5K - 17:21 & 1st place overall out of 327 runners & 1st place in age group (WON) Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5K - 16:14 & 13th place out of 12,746 runners & 2nd place in age group Hot Chocolate 15K - 56:46 & 13th place out of 3,334 runners & 2nd place in age group Arizona Heroes In Recovery 6K (Changed to 4 Mile Race) - 22:40 & 10th out of 427 runners & 5th place in age group
2017 Top Post Collegiate Runs:
5K (3.10 Mi.) @ 5:13 Pace - 16:14 Total Time 15K (9.32 Mi.) @ 6:06 Pace - 56:36 Total Time Distance Run - 6.36 Mi. @ 6:25 Pace - 40:54 Total Time Distance Run - 6.31 Mi. @ 6:39 Pace - 41:53 Total Time Distance Run - 6.32 Mi. @ 6:20 Pace - 40:02 Total Time Distance Run - 7.01 Mi. @ 6:20 Pace - 44:25 Total Time Long Run - 9.10 Mi. @ 6:36 Pace - 1:00:06 Total Time Long Run - 9.39 Mi. @ 6:32 Pace - 1:01:23 Total Time Long Run - 10.80 Mi. @ 6:29 Pace - 1:10:04 Total Time Long Run - 13.10 Mi. @ 6:11 Pace - 1:21:11 Total Time Long Run - 13.25 Mi. @ 8:29 Pace - 1:52:58 Total Time Long Run - 14.01 Mi. @ 6:53 Pace - 1:36:52 Total Time Long Run - 18.03 Mi. @ 6:25 Pace - 1:55:58 Total Time
My main goal of the last 6 months of post collegiate running and training has been to stay in shape, continue doing what I love, and finding new runs and races to be a part of. I decided to begin training to race in my first official half marathon AND my first marathon in early 2018. I am very happy with how the 5 races that I ran in this season were great training runs for the Half and full Marathon races. I am so excited to run in my first official Half Marathon at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Tempe, Arizona on January 14th in just over 2 weeks, followed by the Phoenix-Mesa Marathon on February 24th! I am looking forward to running a lot more in 2018 and seeing where the rest of my competitive distance running career will go.
Let’s Go,
Erik

2017 Review
2017.
2017 was a crazy but amazing year for me, filled with great opportunity and accomplishment. I think I grew the most as a person in the last year as I finished my last semester of college, moved to a new home, and transitioned to the working life & adult world. 2017 was also a year in which I was able to reach and exceed many goals that I set for myself.
I worked 3 jobs, had 2 volunteer opportunities, and I took 4 final courses at college including my Spanish Capstone. I did not leave the USA this year but I traveled to 7 states including 1 new state in the US.
No surprise, but running was agin my favorite and best hobby/sport/thing I did in 2017. I ran over 2,100 miles, I raced in 13 races (8 track & field races AND 5 post collegiate races), I finished my last collegiate season of Track & Field, and I finished college & graduated from the University of Redlands on April 22nd with a 2 Bachelors of Arts degrees in Sociology/Anthropology and in Spanish.
Looking back at 2017, I had many difficult choices that I had to make. They came with pros & cons like every choice and had positive & negative consequences of course. Some highlights of 2017 were going to the AIPAC Conference in Washington, D. C., finishing college, going back to the east coast to MA & NH & ME to see my brother & best friend graduate college & for #EastCoastTour2017, accepting my job at Yelp, moving to Arizona, traveling through Arizona to Sedona & Flagstaff, going to Disney World with my family in October, going back to San Jose for Thanksgiving and the holidays, and running some great runs & races. The biggest thing that happened to me in 2017 was my decision to move to Arizona after college. Even though it was a difficult decision and a tough transition, I am happy where I am right now and thankful to live in a beautiful place!
Check out My 2017 Year In Review….

10 miles of hiking & exploring in Sedona, Arizona this weekend was awesome. Although it feels like I'm OCEANS AWAY from friends and family, it's been great exploring my new home these last few weeks!

The Next Adventure
There are not enough words to explain or express how the last few weeks have been for me. I graduated from college a little over a month ago, my final track & field season ended 3 weeks ago, I got to spend time with family and see my twin brother graduate college in Boston 2 weeks ago, I saw my best friend graduate college last weekend, and I was able to spend time with close friends in my hometown and all throughout New Hampshire this week! To say that I am thankful for these great moments would be a huge understatement. While extremely overwhelming and transitional, the last month of my life has been one of the very best I have ever had. Spending time with important people in my life who I love so much and visiting my old home will always mean so much to me. I am excited to head back home tonight and begin my next adventure. Tomorrow I am moving to Scottsdale, Arizona to move into my apartment and begin my job working for Yelp starting on Monday. I am looking forward to seeing what this next stage of my life will bring. Thank you to everyone who helped me to get to this moment and throughout this journey, I would not be here without my friends, family, or supporters. Check back here for some end of college & new job posts soon! Stay tuned....

This is a video I made about the end of my last semester of college, my graduation from the University of Redlands, and the end of my time in Redlands, California. Even though it is time to say goodbye to the Redlands community and my life as an undergrad college student, I am looking forward to what the next chapter of my life will bring. I am constantly amazed by the beauty of America, and cannot wait to explore much more of it in the years to come!

Class of 2017 University of Redlands Senior Dinner Speech
On April 21st, 2017, I gave a speech at the University of Redlands Class of 2017 Senior Dinner, the night before the College of Arts & Sciences graduation. I auditioned this speech and was selected to be 1 of 2 student speakers at the dinner. I am very honored have had the opportunity to give this speech about leaving a legacy; I tried every day to leave the best legacy that I could leave as a student at the University of Redlands in the 4 years I was an undergrad student there. I am and always will be a Bulldog For Life! Och Tamale!
Leaving A Legacy
Good evening students, alumni, trustees, parents, families, friends, and most importantly the Class of 2017! We made it. Take a moment to look around and enjoy our last night together as undergraduates. As I look around, I am brought back to the first day I visited the University of Redlands. I came here from New Hampshire with my family to tour California schools, and my first thought when I saw this campus was: Wow! Snow-covered mountains offset by beautiful palm trees, sunshine, and a lot of grass for California! My second thought was: This is where I want to spend the next 4 years of my life.
I never imagined how quickly these past 4 years would have gone by, and now that they have, I cannot help but wonder about how quickly the next 4 years or even 40 years will go by.   I remember feeling overwhelmed by the amount of new things and the variety of changes that came at the start of my freshman year. The massive amounts of homework were counterbalanced by the seemingly endless freedom to do whatever I wanted to do, because there were no parents in sight! Isn’t it interesting that we are about to graduate and embark on the next stage of our lives where we will once again be met with massive amounts of work counterbalanced by the freedom to do whatever we want?
Today I am here to talk about our legacy; what we leave behind now and in our future.
A legacy can mean different things for different people. For most people, leaving a legacy means leaving your mark on something, or leaving something behind that was not there before. The legacy that I am here to talk about today encompasses more than that. My interpretation of legacy includes consciously making a place or situation better than before you encountered it. In this way, leaving a legacy helps make the world a better place.
At every point in our lives, our actions and our words, however great or small, form our legacies. Each legacy that we leave behind is like a ripple of water. One ripple may not seem to have a significant effect on an ocean, however when ripples are combined, they can create a wave that will be noticed. When we combine our legacies, we can create a wave of change that can have a positive and lasting effect in the world. This moment marks the last time that we are primarily defined by how we have shaped our university and by how it has shaped us. 4 years ago, we began to create our legacy here at the U of R. Our marks began as small ripples, and through the last 4 years, those ripples have become a wave which strengthened our university in many ways.
Class of 2017, in finding our place and creating our legacy at the University of Redlands, we have done many amazing things. We have left a positive and enduring mark in the classroom, in athletics, in clubs and organizations, as well as within the local community of the city of   Redlands. We are recipients of hundreds of endowed scholarships. We are members of national and departmental honor societies. We are Rotary scholarship recipients. We are SCIAC Champions, national qualifiers, and all-Americans in many sports in athletics. We have succeeded in transforming and restarting clubs and organizations, such as KDAWG radio station which won the award for best entertainment program of the year for the last 2 consecutive years from College Broadcaster’s Incorporated. We have made hundreds of plaza runs and consumed more mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers than we would probably like to admit. We also advised first year seminars as Peer Mentors and we assisted fellow Bulldogs in their transition to college as Orientation Leaders. We helped new students to find areas of involvements and discover passions that have changed their lives, including the oreo smoothie from the Bulldog Cafe. We have mentored elementary school, middle school, and high school students and have added structure and companionship to their days. We raised over $10,000 to take a group of 60 elementary school students in Big Buddies to Disney Land last year and shared an experience with them that they will remember forever. We brought respected and world renown people to the university community as lecturers including Gloria Steinem, Piper Kerman, Jane Goodall, Landon Donovan, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Gilbert, and many more. Many of us have been engaged in the Redlands community through volunteering and working at local schools, organizations, businesses, as well as on political campaigns, making our ideas and voices heard, creating a positive difference in the community. We created new traditions and brought back old ones, reenergizing school spirit and pride. We participated in the university’s first all school lip dub, and we launched a fundraising campaign and raised over $10,000 to bring Deacon, the first Bulldog statue to campus that was unveiled just a few days ago. We brought back two former traditions by hosting Maroon Day and by creating Senior shirts, and we continued a great U of R tradition by doing many unforgettable Chapel Runs. Class of 2017, we left quite an enduring mark.
Tomorrow when we graduate, our legacy at this university will live on, and the            unforgettable experiences that we shared with faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, and family will continue as memories that we will always cherish. With these great memories, and our combined education and insight, we have the skills and the understanding to be the ripples of change that we want to see in the world. As we transition to the next steps in our lives, I        challenge you, the Class of 2017, to use your words, your actions, your work ethic, your commitment to responsibility, and your hardworking nature to create your next legacy. I challenge you to always be the best you can be and do the best you can do in every aspect of your life. Be beneficiaries of learning, continue to make contributions to your communities, and always do what you know is right. In short, exemplify the qualities that you learned and redefined while being Bulldogs and Buffalo at the University of Redlands. In everything you do, leave a legacy of which you will always be proud.
I want to leave you tonight with a quote that has not only stayed with me, but has manifested in my approach to all aspects of my life and experiences as a college student, athlete, and person. They are the words of my Dad, and I will never forget them. He said, “Always do one more thing.” Always do more than what is expected or required of you, right now and in the future. Let that one more thing be something that you do to not only create the legacy that you want to leave, but let it also be the something that truly leads to making the world a better place.
Now, let’s show the world how great Bulldogs and Buffalo are; let’s continue to create ripples of change, and most of all, let us remember that we are Bulldogs For Life. Och Tamale!

2016 RAN By Quickly
Well, 2016 RAN by quickly. Running was one of my favorite parts of this past year, and I cannot wait to see what runs, workouts, races, challenges, and PRs 2017 brings! Here are some quick stats from my 2016 running:
2016 SEASONS
Winter & Spring Training abroad in Barcelona, Spain (2/13/16 - 2/23/16, 3/28/16 - 4/22/16) & 3 races: Maratest Badalona 15K, 38th La Cursa El Corte Inglés 11K, Salomon 10K.
Summer Training at home in San Jose, California (5/31/16 - 8/20/16)

2016 TOTALS

About 1,550 miles ran in 2016 (Containing some running while abroad, 2016 XC Season, 2016 Track Preseason, & Winter break training)
835.25 miles ran @ 7:19 average pace with my TomTom GPS Runner watch from July 25, 2016 - December 31st, 2016 (except from Nov. 25-Dec. 13 when I got it replaced)
I have been recording all of my runs, workouts, and races in my training book since the beginning of college running. I began to be very diligent about it beginning at the end of my Sophomore Year, & began recording daily runs at the beginning of my Junior XC season, and I have been doing that since. I love recording runs & workouts, it is cool to see progress and previous runs from months & years past!
Today I ran my longest run since October 22nd, 2016 to kick off 2017! Today’s assigned run in my training plan was a long run at recovery pace (which is 7:41 average mile pace). I ran 1:15:17 (75 minutes, 17 seconds) at 7:21 average pace. I ran 10.25 miles, burned 911 calories, ran 511 feet in elevation ascent, & my stride rate was 171 strides per minute.
My assigned runs are usually distance or recovery pace runs. My distance pace is 6:41 pace, & my recovery pace is 7:43 pace.

Happy 2017! Don’t forget to exercise and enjoy it! Be focused, be diligent, work hard, and crave success. Create goals and strive to reach them. Don’t forget to enjoy the journey along the way.
Peace,
-Erik
