There are a lot of lessons to be learned from the Olympics. The one that’s emerging is that posting your inner thoughts on the Internet can be painful!
Hope Solo, U.S. soccer team goalkeeper, felt her thoughts were important enough to tweet a defense of her team’s defensive play in response to commentator Brandi Chastain’s critique. By the way, Chastain is a former hero of the 1999 World Cup, working at the Olympics as an analyst. Solo, in retrospect, after the negativity and distractions it caused, probably wanted to retrieve that moment when she hit send. Of course, the analyst, in doing her job, came out the winner. But, maybe the lesson here is, before hitting the send key, wait five minutes.
For the sake of full disclosure though, Solo has a book coming out two days after the Olympics, so, has she generated a lot of free marketing of her product? On that note, tweeting will not be as lucrative for a few other Olympics tweeters. One was sent home for tweeting racist comments. Greek track athlete, Violet Papachristou, so confident she could express herself honestly, quickly learned offensive thoughts are better left untweeted. So, returning home, an embarrassment to her country, her many years of preparation were ended when she, defiantly, pushed the send button.
Lesson learned: Think before you Tweet.
