I am too affected by the recent events both here in Australia and abroad.
There is so much violence, so much non justice, so much terror, in the world. And being on here in an online amplified reality of it all is taking up too much of my daily energy and emotions to invest in my everyday life.
So for that reason, it's time for me to take a break from tumblr. I need to participate in the world as it is around me. This is not me pretending it's not happening, this is me needing to take care of myself so I can better do my part in the world.
Tumblr, while providing an excellent medium for fast information and bringing light to social justice issues can also in a way, desensitise you to the world.
There is a lot happening in my world at the moment too. I am two semesters away from completing my course and becoming a qualified Naturopath, my best friend has just had her baby, I am going to Nepal next month to teach and trek, and I am collaborating on a business project with a friend - with great potential. But most importantly my spirit is being called to step away from here for a little while, to work on my immediate impact in the world and experience it fully, without tumblr goggles.
I will be back, but I will probably also make my own blog on wordpress or some such thing to document my upcoming adventures if anyone is interested in life of little old me.
Also search 'Ally Preston' on facebook if you want to connect etc. I will be limiting my time and exposure to facebook also, but will still use it to connect with my friends and family and keep up to date.
Love, light, and good vibes.

The Sydney Siege is over, and while it could have ended a lot worse, tragedy is still upon us.
While the gunman is dead, two hostages were killed.
Tori Johnson, 34, was the manager of the Lindt Cafe in which the siege was taking place. Johnson is being reported as a hero, as he had attempted to wrestle the gun away from the gunman just before police raided the cafe.
Katrina Dawson, 38, was a lawyer and mother of three. Our thoughts go out to her family, especially her children, as no one should have to lose a mother at such a young age.
Four more are grievously injured, and we wish them all a speedy and smooth recovery. Please keep all the victims, their families, and their friends in your thoughts and prayers today as Australia, as a country, tries to come back from this horrific incident.
Remember, the actions of this man are only the actions of this man. He does not represent the Muslim community, he doesn’t not represent the Islamic religion. Do not take your anger out on any Muslim you may know, and Islam is a religion that promotes and practices peace, and the actions of this man cannot be blamed on the religion.

Feeling pretty emotional. I don't know if it's in anybodys best interest to show the hostages running for their lives/injured, and guns being fired. It's pretty distressing, and not respectful to those involved.
It is so exhausting emotionally hearing and seeing these events unfold...and it really makes me feel like the world is so beyond fucked, that there is nothing we can do. What's more is that he was let out on bail after her fucking killed his wife and set her on fire???? Had 40 counts of sexual assault in his name, and had also sent abusive letters to soldiers families?
Like, what? There is no justice in our law for anybody.
Nobody needed to die last night. Only one person.

I agree and disagree to some extent. The situation that is happening at the moment is bringing out some of the worst, but it happens in any country and is not exclusive to here. Australia is definitely home to a lot of racists and bigots - and it is true too that they think they aren't racist because: 'Oh nah I have heaps of asian friends' or 'I grew up in _____, with black fellas so I'm not racist' ....but then continue to spread stereotypes and 'jokingly' chastise people.
The problems with racism and it's roots are often in the baby boomer generation with English/Euro backgrounds where they compensate for their white guilt by pinning stereotypes. And then you have your uneducated bogans who just copy a more extreme version of that. But for most part i have found that the youth of Australia for most part are very awake and aware of the situation. Also, as much as it is terrible that the racism exists, I have never seen a situation where racism hasn't been met with the same level of intolerance towards it.
The racism toward our indigenous population is very bad. The stereotyping of asians is pretty bad too. But I don't know if it's any worse or better than any other country...I couldn't say
is really Australia the most racist country in the world?
I think it is personally.
In a way, we treat almost everyone equally because we are racist to everyone. We are racist to Australians, to Europeans, American’s, African’s, Asians, Middle Easterns etc.
We will literally hate on each others race, but at the same time, just accept someone regardless of their race. I’ve had people full on hate on asians, and yet one of their close mates is 100% chinese.
It’s kinda ironic and at the same time, we end up ganging up as a culture to things that destroy our multicultural environment.

The Australian Defence League is trying to start a violent riot in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba, a heavily populated Muslim area. Members are also discussing the use of violence against mosques and Muslim schools in NSW. Please be safe.

I don't have twitter but this ^ ^
In Sydney and taking public transport? Here's how you can help.
The Sydney siege has brought the racists out in packs. There are people who are too terrified to go home on public transport because they ‘look Muslim’ or are wearing religious attire. They do not want, nor deserve, to be the target of racial harassment and abuse.
If you are taking public transport tonight, please go on Twitter and post your bus, train or ferry with the hashtag #illridewithyou. If someone needs an ally, you can be there to help them get home safely.

don’t forget about the man who was detained by the Ferguson police on accident, beat up, and then charged $1,500 in property damage for getting his blood on the cops uniforms (the cops admitted to not actually having any blood on them)

Just a quick note:
The situation in Sydney is fucked but should not be associated with muslims you know. Don’t be an ignorant fuck.
The government has planned out terrorist attacks before and this situation is so dumb it might be
This is probably going to be used as...
