Selin Demirci was born in the US, but both her parents were Turkish, and is 22 at the time of the main story line.

At age 9, she lost both her parents and her sister in a storm. After that, she began to have severe recurring nightmares that would keep her and her caretakers up most nights. Through intense therapy to address her trauma, the nightmares eventually subsided, and her later teen years went by smoothly for the most part.

At age 19, she moved across the country to study weather sciences in a prestigious university. However, perhaps due to the combination of academic stress, social isolation and loneliness, and her beloved cat, who had also survived the storm, passing away from old age, she soon began struggling with her mental health again, having frequent anxiety attacks and, once again, disturbing nightmares that would prevent her from getting proper rest. Due to her mental state declining, she had to quit university, hoping to be able to return to her studies once she got better. Selin went through multiple therapists, psychiatrists, and different kinds medications, but the sleepless nights and daytime symptoms persisted. Finally, she finds a therapist who suggests a new, experimental treatment, involving the practice of controlled lucid dreaming, as part of a research project, and, not having much to lose, she gives it a try...
