Why do you read? Why do you think it’s important to read?

I didn’t have the happiest of childhoods - my dad physically abused me when I was young (7-8 years old), I was sexually abused when I was around 10 y/o (a stranger) and my dad was also very strict while I was growing up, including throughout high school. I didn’t really have friends, I was very focused on my school work and lacked much social interaction - no parties, no going out. Also, we weren’t really well off as a family and that lead to a lot of conflicts and problems. I was very soft spoken, not independent at all and did everything that was asked of me, because i thought that by doing that, at least I tried to keep things floating.

Books became my escape. I was safe in their pages, I could lose myself and I could block out all the nasty things that were happening around me. I could press pause on reality and go somewhere where things had a happy ending, have adventures and most of all, have friends. 

I think books truly save people and that’s the most important reason to read them. You can find yourself in a book, you can understand yourself and the world better, you can find solace and meaning. You can find purpose. And maybe forget your unhappiness for a little while. Or, if your life is exactly where you hoped it would be, you can just enjoy reading those words that came from someone’s soul.

My intention isn’t to BOSS people around. But people who don’t create on tumblr really have to understand that if creators stop posting here, you won’t have anything else to like but maybe memes. Attitudes in medicine

I know there’s still a way to go, but can I just say how happy I am that the ‘medicine should be your whole life’ attitude is declining in medicine. Firstly, there’s the reduction in hours, although it can still be tough sometimes. Still, I’m 5 months into being a doctor and the most hours I’ve worked in a week was 66.

Working overtime used to be expected, and ‘part of the job’. I work on surgery at the moment, which is supposedly one of the most toxic and workaholic areas of medicine, and when my registrars leave they always say ‘make sure you leave on time!’ to me - sometimes they’ll even text to check we have. When I was on haem and my senior found out I’d been coming in early to do the list, he was outraged and said he didn’t mind if the ward round starts 10-15 mins late, I shouldn’t come in early.

We’re actively encouraged to exception report to the hospital, if we’re often having to stay late (which means we either get paid back in money or time off for the extra hours we did). 

And when I was at an academic day, someone tentatively asked if it would be frowned upon to take a year out and go travelling etc. And the professor was like ‘30 years ago we’d have probably said no. But now, we want you to actually have lives outside of medicine and be well-rounded people! Yes, go on holiday!’

i absolutely hate it when advice posts tell you to study all the time. i just read one that said, “if you sleep now, you’ll dream. if you study now, you’ll live your dream.” i mean, it could be metaphorical, but it’s actually a really unhealthy message. studying constantly is not healthy. you need to have a balanced life. you need to have a social life, you need to exercise, you need to sleep. how on earth can you be the best version of yourself if you only study? look after yourself. get at least 6 hours sleep a night. eat healthy food. go outside and see your friends. do things that you love. studying constantly, through the night and day, is not good for you at all. and it’s time that the studyblr community learned that.

@kajsasschubeler, so true. This entire post captures everything I've felt in the last couple of months while posting on tumblr. I know so many people who got tired of seeing repetitive things on tumblr and moved to pinterest and quora coz of this

Rather not breathe

Breathless stood the travellers of the dawned night

Ten feet they ran

Now no one had any other soul in sight.

Individually each traveller walked and gasped.

Who knew breathing was such a task?

All those hours spent walking away

So, the decision of simply abandoning the smoke cloaked cities

Wasn't very sound.

The clouds followed them wherever they went

Those angels of death and destruction didn't seem God sent.

The creators of their own destiny

Needed some clean breath desperately.

The flowing water too had gone all black

The number of lives lost, it was hard to keep track

So when the rains came

Each one saw his own redemption.

The dusts burnt and washed away by the acids

This wasn't the end the glories could have predicted.

But how wouldn't the life end up in smoke

When each traveller believed that planet's upkeep was a joke.
