Lie Ren’s version of the Mulan story actually drives me feral (in a good way) and here’s why:
In the Ballad of Mulan and every reiteration of it, the plot is as such: China is under attack, and soldiers are needed. Her family has no sons, so she goes to fight instead of her aging father. She lives and fights with the army for many years, and earns great honors, but decides to return to a peaceful life with her family.
Now - in RWBY’s classic way of twisting fairy tales on their head - a few major elements of this story are changed around. And not just the gender-swap thing.
Firstly, Mulan’s motivation is to protect her family, or her country depending on how deeply you want to read into the nationalism aspects of the story. She joins the war not for fame, or glory, but to protect her relatives. And thus we have our first change up. When the mounted enemy arrives in Mulan’s home, she is too young to stop it. And her family is killed.
Her story arrives before Mulan is ready, and the heroic call-to-action of the original story becomes a formative tragedy in this one. The events of Kuroyuri also planted the seeds for Ren’s future grievances too, about never letting his guard down, always being prepared because you never know what might happen. Even staying emotionally distant in an attempt to soften the blow when losing someone close to you - that’s literally how he unlocked his semblance.
If Mulan’s motivation is to protect her family, then… Ren’s story can’t be Mulan anymore, right? Because his family is gone? Not necessarily. Because the central motivation isn’t gone. Ren became a huntsman, presumably, to fight back against the monsters that stole his family away. To keep a tragedy like that from happening again. One of his father’s final words that night was “We need a Huntsmen.” Combined with his father’s message to “take action”, it makes sense that he might resolve to fight the injustice of the world by becoming someone who slays those monsters.
Related to this - why do you think Ren goes by “Ren” if his first name is Lie?
Simply put, he is the last bearer of their family name. ‘Mulan’ is still fighting for her family, only in this story, she is fighting in their memory.

Semblance of the Soul: Lie Ren
What beautiful blossoms we have this year, but look! This one’s late, but I’ll bet that when it blooms it will be the most beautiful of all.
Mulan, 1998
Ren’s story is full of flowers:
His own family name, Nora, his hometown all reference specific flowers. Moreover, his semblance too makes use of flower imagery to convey its effects.
Why is that so and what do all these flowers mean?
Tranquility gives us the perfect lens to discover it. Let’s use it to explore all the different colors and fragrances that make Lie Ren the “most rare and beautiful flower of all”!

Ren has a semblance that can quite literally keep his temper under control and hide himself from grimm and yet he's constantly throwing himself at them anyway it's so fucking funny.
He's such a mess emotionally lmao just because he masks those parts of himself doesn't mean it isn't there lol
You know it really speaks to how people who call Yang ‘hotheaded’ have COMPLETELY missed the memo when you realize that Blake and Ren have actually done WAY more impulsive and hotheaded shit that nearly got either of them killed over the course of the show.
