A Flirting Guide For Writers (And Real World Usage)
I reblogged a post a day or so ago, and the result (which made me sad) was mostly people saying that they feel they cannot flirt (and therefore cannot write it effectively).
So I thought I’d share my own, admittedly limited, knowledge (under the guise of writing advice) so that you can all write kick-ass romance and show your feelings like the boss-ass-bitches you are!
The Basics; Eye-Contact, Personal Space, Body Language
The thing about flirting is that most of it is non-verbal, and the world is split between those writers who find this part the easiest, and those who find it the most incomprehensible.
The problem is that it’s all dependent on a fine, mostly unspoken, line which makes the interaction creepy if crossed. When writing a character who is trying to flirt with someone, or when trying to flirt with someone yourself, you need to keep three main things in mind; personal space, body language, and potential restriction. This is especially important for men. The problem is that this is mostly instinctual, and so it can be hard to write if you haven’t had time to develop the right skills yourself.
Personal space
When trying to show that your character is flirting you need to make a note of them moving into the other person’s personal space but not too much. Consider this; someone leaning into your space just a little to speak to you versus someone being practically nose to nose with you. One catches your attention, the other is uncomfortable at best and intimidating at worst. The idea is to lean in enough to show interest and create a sense of intimacy, without becoming overbearing or threatening. As a rule, I find that I begin to feel uncomfortable if a man I’m not sure of gets closer than the distance it would take to perform a ballroom Waltz.
To get an idea of how that looks, hold up your hand at arms length as if pushing someone away or pressing against a wall. Now slowly bend your elbow until the point sits just under your breast or pectoral muscle.
That’s the maximum personal space invasion I allow from people I don’t know well. In my experience, this is common to many women, though others prefer more space. Likewise, in my experience, men I have met seemed perfectly comfortable with me being closer than even that, but I am small, relatively unthreatening, and we have to allow for the fact that we were in the position of viewing each other as romantic interests. Men may prefer more space from other men, or from individuals that they do not see in a romantic light already. This changes from person to person, and noting your characters preference is a good way to show what kind of person they are.
Eye-Contact
Another fundamental which relies on instinct subtlety; conventional wisdom says that you should make eye-contact in order to show interest. Actual wisdom will also tell you that too much becomes intense and a little creepy. If your character holds someone’s eye for too long its becomes fixative rather than flirtatious; it becomes staring. Depending on your character and their interest this can either read as obsessive, creepy, or aggressive.
Flirtatious eye contact can take a few forms;
1 - the “getting caught” method where a person looks at someone and quickly looks away again. When caught have your character (or yourself) look away quickly and then back, hold eye contact for a few moments and then acknowledge the other person. A smile, wink, or nod will suffice for this.
2 - the “lash” method where someone, usually a woman, catches their crushes eye, looks down, and then back up from under the lashes. Also very effective when done by men with big eyelashes.
3 - the “full cheese” method by which someone winks, grins, or wiggles their eyebrows. This is effective when used sparingly.
If your character also touches the person they are flirting with lightly, this will build tension. The touch should be gentle, but obviously deliberate. Avoid possessive gestures like gripping or pulling, however.
Body Language
When flirting, the body language of both people is important; your character should watch their crush for signs of interest and/or discomfort.
Positive signs; leaning in, touching, playing with hair, smiling, licking or biting lips, tilting their head slightly, mirroring.
Negative signs; leaning away, crossing arms, pursing lips, refusing to make eye-contact, raising their shoulders, crossing their legs away from the other person, frowning, clenching jaw, balling fists.
This body language can apply to both characters in the scene.
Advanced Techniques; Verbal Cues, Suggestions, And Other Senses
This is the shit I thrive on, as a writer you will probably feel the same way; I notice the sounds, smells, and textures of another person as well as what they say (in fact, when you read my work you’ll notice that the smell of any romantic lead is noted upon more than once).
Verbal Cues
This is the thing that most people focus upon when it comes to discussions or attempts at flirtation. The verbal sparring that comes with flirting is what really gets our stomachs churning and our hearts pulsing… but why are some people so naturally good at it, while others are… less so?
And why does some of the most vapid and run-of-the-mill stuff seem to work between the right people?
Well, the sad news for your unlovely characters is that physical attraction makes us more likely to respond to even the most poorly constructed of verbal flirtation. Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so even the least pretty of characters could find themselves flirting up a storm with the right person.
Verbal cues include;
- Gentle teasing
- Compliments
- Inside jokes
- Using someone’s name (yes, really)
- Asking questions and responding in a thoughtful way
- Sexual innuendo (when used tastefully and sparingly)
Suggestion
This is the easiest to miss or overshoot because it’s a combination of everything else we’ve already covered. For example, your character saying to a friend,
“I’m just going to hop into the shower, talk soon.”
Is not a suggestive statement. Now imagine your character flirting with someone on the phone before sighing and saying,
“I’m going to take a shower… I’ll speak to you soon, ok?”
The difference is subtle but important; the second suggests that they don’t want to stop talking to the other person, that they definitely want to speak to them again as soon as possible, and subtly encourages the other person to consider them in the shower. You see?
Easy to miss, easy to fudge. Suggestion is hard to pull off, and hard to write, but think of it this way - suggestion;
1) Encourages the other person to think of you/your character in an intimate way
2) Implies enjoyment in and desire for their presence
3) Is open-ended and encourages reciprocation
The Other Senses
This is not so much flirting, but the act of making your character/yourself as appealing as possible to another. Personal hygiene, a good fashion sense, and good manners are a part of this.
But -
When writing about this you should not discuss it directly unless your character is making a conscious choice. Instead, focus on the character that yours is focussed upon.
- How do they smell?
- What are the textures of their clothes?
- What manners do they affect?
- Does their voice have a texture?
- Do they touch your character a lot?
- Do they note upon your characters smell or noticeably try to take in their smell?
- Do they react noticeably to your character’s voice or mannerisms?
This is just a basic guide, of course, but if you get this down you’re in a good position to build romantic tension in every walk of life!

10 outline techniques for writers
With this post I listed 10 outline techniques to help writes move their story from a basic idea to a complete set of arcs, plots, sequences and/or scenes. Or to simply expand whatever you have in hands right now.
If you have a vague story idea or a detailed one, this post is for you to both discover and organize. A few technique will work perfectly. A few won’t. Your mission is to find the one that works best for you. That said, I advice you to try out as many techniques as possible.
So, are you ready? Open your notebook, or your digital document, and let’s start.
1. Snowflake method: Start with a one-sentence description of the novel. Then, develop this simple phrase into a paragraph. Your next step is to write a one-page summary based on the paragraph, you can write about characters, motivations, goals, plots, options, whatever you feel like. From this point on, you can either start your book or expand the one-page summary into four pages. And, at last, four pages into a brief description of known sequences of scenes. Your goal is to make the story more and more complex as you add information, much like a forming snowflake.
2. Chapter by chapter: List ten to twenty chapters, give each chapter a tittle and a brief description of what should happen. Then, break each chapter into three to five basic sequences of scenes. Give each sequence a title, a brief description and a short list of possibilities (possibilities of dialogues, scenarios, outcomes, moods, feelings… just play around with possibilities). From this point on, you can either create the scenes of sequences with a one-sentence description for each or jump straight to writing. Your goal is to shift from the big picture to a detail-oriented point of view.
3. Script: This might sound crazy, but, with this technique, you will write the screenplay of your story as if it’s a movie. No strings attached to creative writing, just plain actions and dialogues with basic information. Writing a script will take time, maybe months, but it will also enlighten your project like no other technique. Your goal is to create a cinematic view of your story. How to write a script here.
4. Free writing: No rules, no format, no step, just grab a pen or prepare your fingers to write down whatever idea that comes up. Think of possibilities, characters, places, quests, journeys, evolutions, symbolisms, fears, good moments, bad moments, clothing, appearances. Complete five to ten pages. Or even more. The more you write, the more you will unravel. You can even doodle, or paste images. Your mission is to explore freely.
5. Tag: This technique is ideal if you have just a vague idea of the story. Start by listing ten to fifteen tags related to the story. Under each tag, create possible plots. And, under each plot, create possible scenes. Grab a red felt pen and circle plots and scenes that sparkle your interest.
6. Eight-point arc: With this technique you will divide your story into eight stages. They are Stasis, Trigger, Quest, Surprise, Critical Choice, Climax, Reversal and Resolution. The Stasis is the every-day-life of your main character. Trigger is an event that will change the every-day-life of your character (for better or for worse). Quest is a period of your main characters trying to find a new balance, a new every-day-life (because we all love a good routine). Surprise will take your character away from their new found every-day-life. Critical Choice is a point of no return, a dilemma, your character will have to make the hardest decision out of two outcomes, both equally important. Climax is the critical choice put to practice. Reversal is the consequence of the climax, or how the characters evolved. Resolution is the return to a new (or old) every-day-life, a (maybe everlasting) balance.
7. Reverse: Write down a description of how your story ends, what happens to your characters and to those around them. Make it as detailed as possible. Then, move up to the climax, write a short scenario for the highest point of your story. From there, build all the way back to the beginning.
8. Zigzag: Draw a zigzag with as many up and downs as you want. Every up represents your main character moving closer to their goal. Every down represents your main character moving further from their goal. Fill in your zigzag with sequences that will take your character closer and farther from the goal.
9. Listing: The focus of this technique is exploring new ideas when your story feels empty, short or stagnated. You’ll, basically make lists. Make a long list of plot ideas. Make another list of places and settings. Make a list of elements. And a list of possible characters. Maybe a list of book titles. Or a list of interesting scenes. A list of bad things that could happen inside this universe. A list of good things. A list of symbolism. A list of visual inspiration. A list of absurd ideas you’ll probably never use. Then, gather all this material and circle the good items. Try to organize them into a timeline.
10. Character-driven: Create a character. Don’t worry about anything else. Just think of a character, their appearance and style. Give them a name. Give them a basic personality. Give them a backstory. Develop their personality based on the backstory. Now, give this character a story that mirrors their backstory (maybe a way to overcome the past, or to grow, or to revenge, or to restore). Based on your character’s personality, come up with a few scenes to drive their story from beginning to end. Now, do the same thing for the antagonist and secondary characters.
So, when is it time to stop outlining and start writing?
This is your call. Some writers need as many details as they can get, some need just an basic plot to use as a North. Just remember, an outline is not a strict format, you can and you will improvise along the way. The most important is being comfortable with your story, exploring new ideas, expanding old concepts and, maybe, changing your mind many times. There’s no right or wrong, just follow your intuition.

Yes.. You said you were going to update it and you did. Thank you😍😍😍
The Christmas Con: Ch. 5
In order to convince his parents and his ex that he’s changed, Oliver Queen hires a stranger to be his girlfriend for the holidays. Felicity Smoak is as far from his type as possible, with her dark hair and attitude problem, but a bottle of hair dye and a new wardrobe—not to mention the money he’s promised—can do wonders, and if he plays his cards right this whole thing might actually work.
A/N: It took me way too long to update this. Hopefully I will be much, much, much faster next time. Anyway, hope you enjoy it :)
Excerpt:
Disembarking a private plane was three million times nicer than disembarking a commercial flight, if you were to ask Felicity.
No lines of people cramming into the aisles, waiting turns to grab their carry ons. No crowded jetway connecting them to the loud, even more crowded terminal. Instead, as soon as the plane came to a stop on the tarmac, a crew pushed a rolling staircase right to the door for them. The flight attendants waved them a friendly goodbye, and their luggage was already being transferred to a sleek black town car by the time they walked down the stairs to the tarmac. Such a seemingly small thing, but it felt luxurious to Felicity, who’d only ever traveled commercially.
A tall man in a tailored suit stood beside the car, a small smirk tugging on his lips when he saw them.
“John!” Oliver walked over and the man opened his massive arms for a hug. Seriously, his biceps were like the size of bowling balls.
Felicity waited awkwardly as they patted each other on the back a few times and said hello. This man, John, was clearly Oliver’s driver, but they acted more like friends.
If Felicity had been caught off guard by Oliver talking so warmly about his housekeeper, she wasn’t this time. Despite his clear immaturity, Oliver seemed like a good guy who cared for the people close to him. It didn’t matter if they were employees, he treated them like equals. A newfound respect settled into place at the discovery.
“Who’s your friend?” John asked with a kind smile in her direction.
“This is Felicity Smoak.” Oliver placed a hand on her elbow to encourage her closer. “Felicity, this is John Diggle, head of security for my family and one of my closest friends.” Oliver turned back to John. “Felicity’s here to help me get Mom off my back.”
Felicity’s mouth fell open at him telling his head of security the truth about their relationship, or lack thereof, but John seemed to take it in stride. Though she supposed earning the title of one of Oliver’s closest friends must have required him to participate in at least a few of Oliver’s harebrained schemes.
John huffed a laugh, rolling his eyes.
“You really think pretending you have a girlfriend is going to fix things?” He shook his head. “I heard your parents talking the other day and—no offense to you, Miss Smoak—but it’s going to take more than a pretty girl and a few promises to save you this time.”
“None taken,” she said automatically. “And you can call me Felicity.”

Olicity tropes: enemies to lovers OR arguing turning into super hot kiss
@eighthprincessofheart said: Only one bed!
Summary: Animosity and sexual tension swirl when a freak blizzard leaves Felicity sharing a hotel room with her stepsister’s ex boyfriend.
###
“This is the last time that I fly with you!”
Felicity stomped—well, more like picked her way carefully, yet angrily—through the snow as she made her way up the curb and into the lobby of what she could only describe as a seedy motel, even if its name—The Cedar Creek Hotel and Inn—was a little more… optimistic.
Oliver followed after her, roughly dragging their bags off the bus and into the dirty, slushy mix covering the parking lot. She could hear him grumbling something under his breath, but he didn’t dare outright reply. Good. So, he had some self preservation instincts, after all.
Their flight had been grounded in the middle of nowhere after a freak snowstorm hit and they were lucky—ahem, “lucky”—enough to catch a bus that was willing to take them to the nearest hotel to ride out the storm. Until then, she supposed she should just be glad she wasn’t currently setting up for the night on one of those hard, plastic benches in the empty airport.
Felicity closed her eyes against the sudden warmth the heat in the lobby provided. She’d been freezing her ass off the entire bus ride. A moment later her suitcase was dropped, carelessly, beside her and Oliver was pushing past to speak to the man at the front desk. She sighed and followed after, tugging her bag along.
“…need a room for the night,” Oliver was saying. He fidgeted from side to side slightly, as if he were in a hurry. Felicity wanted to roll her eyes. Their flight was grounded—partially because of him, she might add—over two thousand miles from their destination. Where the hell did he have to be?
The man behind the counter nodded slowly and clicked something on his computer. “Be $125 for the night.”
Felicity did roll her eyes at that. $125 for a room in this place? She was grateful there was heat, but… there really wasn’t much else going for it. She glanced around the lobby—more like a small room with a desk to one side and a ratty couch at the other—at the peeling wallpaper and outdated paneling. She supposed she should just be glad they had any rooms at all, what with this storm.
The man gave Oliver a key card to his room after he paid, and she stepped up to the counter, already pulling out her wallet.
“Sorry, ma’am. No vacancies.” Her eyes shot wide and she opened her mouth to argue, but the man only shrugged. “There’s another place a few miles from here. They’re not nearly as nice, so they may still have some rooms available.”
Behind her, Oliver snickered.
He. Snickered.
She saw red.
