really dislike when a fanbase discolors my opinion about something, it's not even the thing-in-question's fault and even if i don't particularly like whatever video game or tv show their fans rave about i'm not going to hold what fans do against it

BUT

exposure to the more violent vocal (presumably (hopefully)) minority leads into the idea that "wow the people who like this thing are insane and horrible; this is a thing for insane and horrible people" even when it's something that i personally enjoy and while i know that this is A) not true and B) an irrational line of thinking, it tends to at the very least make me hesitant to either admit enjoyment of the thing or to engage with self-proclaimed fans of said thing

a pretty big example for me is animal crossing, which after the release of new horizons there was a lot of activity that rarely if ever happened before the release, up to and including harassment over preferences in characters, attacking others for perceived wrongdoing, a sort of elitism regarding specific villagers due to them being unavailable through amiibo card, and repeatedly (not just once or twice) seeing "fans" attack others for things they really shouldn't be jumping straight to violence for. i really like animal crossing (have so for years) yet these people's behavior has this effect where i end up thinking "oh, this person could be a terrible person" whenever i meet someone and one of the first things i learn about them is that they like animal crossing. that kind of thinking never happened to me before and i hate it and it's scary and i try to be conscious about it but the fact that i ever think about it to begin with shows how i've let these people's behavior affect me and how i treat others and that it's very likely that the same has happened to many others

i try to consciously dictate my enjoyment of things based on the subject itself and a lot of the media i dislike i've personally gone through (most of them without prior exposure to) so that when i complain about them, it's from a place of genuine consternation and not because "mean person on internet likes this show so it is Bad." i will not claim that anything has no inherent value because of my own opinions towards it. it's just that repeatedly encountering these aggressive people makes me feel like a bad person for liking some things and to subconsciously go "ah, thing i think is bad attracts bad people, my opinion on it is now cemented" which is not logical and not even objectively correct

tldr it is not okay to base your opinion on someone over something they like. it is unreasonable to dislike something because of the behavior of people who claim to be fans. it is very, very not okay to attack people over what kind of things they prefer or how they prefer it. conflict, if any, should be over genuine life-affecting issues and not because someone is bashing the things you enjoy. obviously me writing all of this isn't going to change people's behavior but i need to at the very least remind myself to treat others fairly and not because of arbitrary things like fiction or taste.
