[Ciri, said the enchantress softly. I once told you that everything I do is for your own good. Trust me. Trust me, I beg you. Now run for it. Ciri was already on the steps when she heard Yennefer’s voice once more. The enchantress was standing beside a column, resting her forehead against it. I love you, my daughter, she said indistinctly. Run. — Time of Contempt]

The Fates (Greek) have the subtle but awesome power of deciding a man’s destiny. They assign a man to good or evil. Their most obvious choice is choosing how long a man lives. There are three Fates. Clotho, the spinner, who spins the thread of life. Lachesis, the one who measures how long one’s life should be, and Atropos; she who cannot be turned, who at death with her shears cuts the thread of life. They are old and predate the gods, and it is not clear how far their power extends.

greek mythology: eris
eris is the personified spirit of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. because of eris’ disagreeable nature she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of peleus and thetis. when she turned up anyway and was refused admittance, she raged and threw a golden apple amongst the goddesses inscribed “to the fairest.” three laid claim to it hera, aphrodite and athena, and in their rivalry brought about the events leading up to the trojan war.
