Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
I have seen quite a few movies with vampire origin stories (Underworld, Dracula Untold, Van Helsing) - but this movie is based on how Dracula beat being tied to his castle in Transylvania/Romania.
The ship boy coming back to life and burns in the sunrise
** planning to rewatch this in August 2027. Life got a little busy since January!

Moonfall (2022)
This movie was definitely a thriller - aside from all the conspiracy theories I never knew about before watching it.
The primary theory (revealed at almost the final quarter) is that all life on Earth was seeded by humanity's alien forefathers who were being chased by sentient AI that is against being subservient to lesser beings.
There are theories about megastructures, hollow moon, AI revolt and depictions of how the Moon moving out of orbit would be catastrophic for our terrestrial existence. This movie felt like a mashup of other apocalypse movies like 2012, Transformers, The Core, and a little bit of the family dynamics from Twister. (Step/adoptive parents are starting to get better reps, but still act as disaster fodder.)
Many of the actors in this movie are A-list - I feel like they did not phone in their performances and had some fun with the few jokes their characters were afforded. Patrick Wilson and Halle Berry play NASA employees and John Bradley plays a conspiracy theorist.
I didn't take this movie too seriously, but it was a nice action movie and would have been awesome to see in theaters or on IMAX.
Recommend for casual movie night and if you're looking to add some interesting science-based discussion to your friend group.

The Big Sick (2017)
I was unfamiliar with Kumail Nanjiani outside of his bits about growing up in Pakistan (the broken VCR cracks me up every time) and his appearance in the second Spiderverse movie. As for the actress playing his now wife Emily Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan) - I am still unfamiliar with her name/work outside of this movie.
The movie focuses on Kuamail and Emily's relationship - even though half of the couple is in a medical coma for most of the movie. My overall impression of this movie is that it's very humanizing. I felt like there were more real moments versus scripted drama. My favorite part was how Kumail and Emily had a real discussion about their relationship following coming out of her coma. They both approached the moment as adults and I could see that they both still had some hurt to work through. Major props for the parents' portrayal of their views as well. Emily's father, Terry (Ray Romano) came across as repentant yet concerned more for his daughter than his marriage, and Kumai's mother, Sharmeen Nanjiani (Zenobia Shroff) gave me the feeling that she was doing her best to provide what was expected for her family. I liked the awkward dinner dates joke :)
Overall - I liked this movie, it was a nice look at a realistic situation and I would most likely watch it again.

Red Riding Hood (2011) A well known fairytale but this version is more in the gritty vein. I originally saw this in theaters, which definitely added to the effects. (A wolf growling in surround sound while your surrounded by strangers: chilling.) Throughout the narrative there is doubt and distrust cast upon all the people we are shown or introduced to. When you finally discover the wolf's identity, all the odd little bits line up. Being from the director and similar team of Twilight, there are a few "cloudy eye" moments that seem only to satiate the audience's want of the eye candy. There is also a conclusion issue that varies between the movie and the novelization. Many of the characters' interactions seem shrunk on the DVD release too. A good date night movie - little splashes of action break up the dark mystery of "who's the wolf" and the family drama plots. The actors put real emotion and I think it came across well. RATING: 4/5 paws. Aroooo!

John Carter (2012)
The box promises non-stop action, and it delivers! A love story was worked into the story, but it flowed great.I’m not familiar with the John Carter stories and this was a nice introduction. The actors were true to form and really made the viewer connect with story. My favorite part was how there was a dog like creature that could find John Carter anywhere.
John Carter was former officer from the Civil War who find himself searching for gold in Arizona and gets caught up in a skirmish with Apaches. Thanks to a magic medallion he gets “telegraphed” to Basoom(Mars.) Carter finds himself caught up in the planet-wide politics and forced to make a choice. The movie is a bit on the long side (2hrs+) and doesn’t stop to give notes- so it does leave a few open spots. The ending sets up for a sequel, no news on that yet.
Rating: 4/5 🏆

#1 SpeedRacer (2008)
I've not seen any of the original animation from the 60's, but this is probably the most updated version of the Racer saga. Most of the characters are played by attractive people (Speed is a little baby faced though) and this lends credibility. Not sure how the 'cartel' would give a damn about that racing though. Once you get past the rainbow puke color scheme, it's a decent way to waste some time, recommended for 10yrs or under. (Chris says it uses too much cotton candy CGI) RATING: 👀 worth a watch
