“Don’t leave for the holiday, Em,” Lucinda said quickly, not wanting to be alone during such a time but not wanting to make the situation about her. “You can hide out with me and Al.”

“Or you and Al could come with us. Gran would be royally pissed, but when isn’t she?”

“Me too, but sometimes it’s for the better.” Emma admitted. “She’s too nice for her own good.”

“Such a good girl.” He smiled but it wasn’t friendly. “We need to discuss our impending wedding. I’m thinking a spring wedding. Preferably sooner rather than later of course. And I think I’ve chosen the best women to be your bridesmaids.”

“Winter is better, and Lucinda will be my only bridesmaid. That is non-negotiable.” Emma said, doing all that she could to keep an even temperament. “I don’t know why we need to talk about this now. It’s not going to happen until after graduation.”

“Um…yes? I don’t exactly have time to sit around wondering what you could want to speak with me about.” 

“You know what? Forget it.”

“I’m pretty sure he’s too busy placating him for that – they’re always doing something, it’s as annoying now as it was when they were still in Hogwarts.”

Lucinda paused. “I’m only saying that we’re going on holiday soon. There’s no way he won’t stop by the house when the mood strikes him.”

“Then maybe I should really leave.” Emma ran frustrated hands over her face, pulling her hair back. “I mean, Austen and I could take off for the holiday. Go off on his boat where they can’t find me.”

“Are you being serious right now? There’s nothing in the world you can imagine that I would need to talk about?”

“Christopher too,” Lucinda added. “I don’t get it either – I’m not a fan of them.” 

“I don’t know,” she said honestly. “But you can’t avoid him forever, Em.”

“Christopher doesn’t bother me so much. I mean, I wouldn’t really spend an afternoon with him for fear of having my throat cut, but altogether that’s not the worst thing in the world. Rod, however....” Emma shook her head. She couldn’t tell Lucinda all the reasons she couldn’t stand Rodolphus, but they mounted more by the second. “I wish Chris would slit his throat.”

“No. I’ll just get married to him, have a few kids, decide it’s a horrible mistake, ship one kid off, and make a run for it, right?”

“I think he definitely tried to get Reg to get you down there, but obviously that didn’t work.” She rolled her eyes. “A few of the younger Slytherin’s came to me as Prefect and Best Friend and told me about it.”

“I’m surprised it didn’t. Reg seems enamoured with him lately.” Which didn’t make any sense to Emma considering how they all knew the piss poor relationship between Rodolphus and Rabastan. How anyone could stomach the older brother was beyond her. “What a nightmare. What am I going to do?”

“No, thankfully not. But he’s been bothering people about it – like, literally anyone. Even people you don’t hang around.”

“What do you mean? Who has he been bothering about it? And how do you know that he has been?”
