For @emeriethevalkyriegirl 🩷 @acotargiftexchange
Masterlist // Chapter Four // Next Part AO3 // read below
Every year, the city of Velaris hosts a week long festival, the Carnival of Stars. It's the biggest event of the year, people from everywhere travel to Night Court County to partake in the special events. Every year, the festival ends on the Winter Solstice, with a performance by the Velaris Ballet Company. And every year they perform the holiday classic, The Nutcracker. However this year, the director of the company has decided to shift gears. This year, the ending performance will be, The Lady and the Fool. A show that follows a royal lady falling in love with a court jester, despite what society says. The director wants to bring a whole new experience to the show. And the twist is that the fool will not be played by a fellow dancer. So instead, they decide to cast a local Winter Solstice tree farmer. What could go wrong? OR Nesta Archeron is the principle ballerina of the Velaris Ballet Company, playing the lead role of The Lady and the Fool, with her counter part, Cassian Pine.
It's the start of the new year! I can't believe all that my friends and I have accomplished within 2024. I hope 2025 is good to everyone. This story is almost done! It's been so great to write Nessian as idiots to lovers. I should do this more often.
Enjoy!
CW: Slight bullying, trauma response to abusive mother
Seven weeks until Winter Solstice
The fluorescent lights were spotlights, shining down onto the floor of the studio. Strands from her braid became loose as Nesta completed the fourth and final pirouette. Sweat built up among her forehead, her feet were back on the ground. She gracefully curtsied, watching herself in the mirrors, the eyes of her fellow dancers blended into a blur. The room around them clapped quietly. Near Nesta stood three male dancers who she had just been dancing with. They congratulated her before all of them walked off to the side, grabbing water.
“That was excellent as always, Nesta.” Eris commented, making his way to the center of the room. His back was towards the mirrors, surveilling everyone. His sleeves were rolled up past his elbows, glasses rested on his head, pushing back some of his hair.
“I understand this ballet is different as it has a more intimate cast, but I do expect all of you to be at your best during the ball scenes. This isn’t a hobby anymore folks, this is your job, your livelihood.”
Nesta pulled her steel water bottle away from her lips, glancing around the room. Their dance company was of a medium size so there were only two principal dancers including her. The other was Balthazar, who was currently standing next to the three male dancers Nesta was just working with.
Pulling her gaze from them, her eyes landed on her fellow female dancers, in a mix of standing against the wall or sitting down. Some looked and smiled softly, waving, some ignored her, but a few caught her gaze and glared. It was a trio of women who had never gotten along with Nesta, their jealousy spreading through their fake smiles whenever they spoke to her.
Nesta stiffened slightly before glaring back, her sharp eyes narrowing. The trio who glared looked away after a moment. Mentally, Nesta rolled her eyes. This was nothing new.
“I shall see everyone for practice in two days. Remember, we only have seven weeks left until the performance.” Eris reminded the company while dancers started to pack up.
“Nesta.” Eris called out. “Make sure to fill in Cassian soon. I know he said he couldn’t come to tonight’s practice, so when you see him next, give him a rundown of what he missed.”
“You say it as though I’m seeing I’m seeing him tonight, Eris.”
He shrugged. “Stranger things have happened.”
Grabbing her bag and bottle, Nesta made her way out of the studio where the same trio that glared at her, spoke not so quietly among themselves. They huddled close as they made their way through the hallway, leading to the locker room.
“What is her problem anyway? She’s a principal dancer and for what? With that attitude alone, that should’ve been a deciding factor against her.”
“The Ice Queen strikes again with her frozen glares. That woman is so cold, I could feel her aurora from across the room.” One of them said, rubbing their arms in search of warmth. The others laughed, pretending to shiver.
“And the cherry on top? She gets to have private lessons with that hunk of a man. What a dream boat that Cassian is.” A flirtatious tone in her voice while her friends fanned themselves and sighing as they clutched their chests.
Nesta’s stomach immediately soured, hearing how they spoke of Cassian. The Christmas Tree farmer had met the rest of the company last week during their start of rehearsals. He attended every session, writing things down in an old leather journal, keeping up with details that Eris laid down. Following Balthzar’s lead, the two had been making progress on bringing the fools to life. Cassian had quickly become the talk of the group, everyone wanting to spend time with him. When he announced he wasn’t going to make it to tonight’s session, Nesta could have sworn the whole room shared a collected sadness.
But not Nesta. Definitely not her. She didn’t care that he missed tonight’s session. Even as a pit in the shape of him sank in her stomach, pushing down the thoughts of him. But the way these women spoke of him, of Cassian, made Nesta sick.
Curling her fist inward, Nesta moved through the trio as they stopped for second, giggling loudly on ‘how hot he was’ and ‘he seemed so emotionally intelligent’ and ‘I’ll just have to show him how limber ballerinas are’. Nesta’s shoulders bumped with two of her fellow dancers, their glares at her back, making her way past them.
“You could say excuse me, you know.” One of the women shouted at Nesta’s back
“Or go around. There’s space around us, Prima.” Another sneered.
She bit her tongue, moving forward. Turning to the left, Nesta headed outside to the front courtyard. Curses and insults laid heavy on her tongue, trying to keep her lips sealed. Wrapping her arms around herself, Nesta let out a shuddered breath, crossing the threshold from the building. It was early November, but the cold had already settled into the area for the last several weeks.
The pavement had a dusting of snow, small flakes fell from clouds. Glancing upwards, the words that were held in between her teeth slipped away, a small smile forming on Nesta’s face. It began snowing mid October in Velaris, and being a city in the mountains, hardly anyone freaked out over the weather. Other places would close down, school would be closed, maybe even go into a state of emergency. But in Velaris, the city only strengthened because of the winter season.
“Shit.” Nesta mumbled, a harsh breeze blew almost right through her. Her teeth chattered at the cold, her hands rubbed at the sleeves of the skin tight leotard she wore. Underneath her loose skirt and tights, Nesta felt goosebumps on her thighs. Standing near the curb, Nesta realized she had forgotten her coat in Emerie’s subaru.
Fuck.
Pulling out her phone, she went to send a text to Emerie when Nesta remembered their conversation from that morning.
“Tonight is inventory, so your practice will end way before I step out the door.” Emerie said, parking the car among the curb. “Tonight it’s either the bus or one of your sisters.”
“Sounds good, Em.” Nesta took a sip of her hot chocolate to go, before she grabbed her bag. Opening the car door, Nesta walked towards the building, leaving her coat in Emerie’s car.
Nesta had completely forgotten to reach out to either of her younger sisters. It was Elain’s week to spend time with their mother, so she most likely wasn’t available. Feyre was probably in the middle of teaching a class, as it was only 6:30pm.
A moment then two passed before Nesta sighed, slipping the phone back into her pocket. It was inconvenient that Nesta didn’t know how to drive. Growing up, Elain got her license first out of the three Archeron sisters as Nesta had been too busy in her studies and dance to care for anything outside of it. Feyre followed not long after their father passed away.
Public transportation it is then. Nesta sighed. And then a good mile walk home. She thought, annoyed that none of the buses in Velaris had a stop closer to her apartment complex.
Turning around to make her way to the bus stop, a blur of red and green in a familiar shape caught her attention. A pickup truck with the faded red paint that would only be seen in Hallmark movies, so naturally it blended in perfectly in the parking lot. The truck had pulled up to the curb, the engine off, and the owner nowhere in sight. Glancing at the back, there were a few bumper stickers including one that said ‘Just the tip?’ with a solstice tree topper and another sticker that read ‘Honk if you need your stocking stuffed’.
Rolling her eyes at the crude humor, Nesta tried and failed to fight the grin that appeared. This was Cassian’s truck no doubt about it, however Cassian was nowhere to be found. Peering around, she didn’t see her co-star anywhere.
This is stupid. If I stand here any longer, I’ll become a snowman. Tugging at the shoulder strap of her bag, she turned around the other way to head to the stop. Teething nipping at her chapped lips, she was trying to bury whatever crawled into her mind to think that she could be missing Cassian.
Me? Miss Cassian? As if–
“Nesta?” A familiar voice called out behind her making her go still. She hated how her toes curled at his tone and depth of her name coming from his mouth.
Turning around, Nesta’s lips remained neutral as she peered up at Cassian, who stood in a heavy duty jacket with Holly beside him.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, looking back and forth between him and his truck. As he went to answer her, another breeze passed through the area. Nesta squeezed her eyes, trying to fight off the cold. Then suddenly the air was less cold somehow among her back, but felt the wind through her tights and hair. When Nesta opened her eyes, Cassian’s hair was blowing slightly in the wind, and his jacket now appeared gone.
“What the…” Nesta watched as Cassian pulled his jacket that was now on her, tighter and getting her arms into the sleeves. Every inch of her mind was trying to fight off every thought that crossed her mind, but the warmth that sank into her bones made her sigh just slightly in little peace. The scents of pine and cinnamon illuminating her atmosphere, her eyes closed again, no longer fighting the urge when a hand held her arm. She blinked once then twice at Cassian.
Her cheeks flushed. Even with that stupid grin, he’s not bad to look at–WAIT
“Why the hell did you give me your jacket?” She looked down at the jacket before looking back up at him. “You’re going to freeze out here!” Nesta exclaimed. He only answered with a wider grin and laughed. Fuck, why does his laugh sound like what the bells in Heaven sound like…do they even have bells in Heaven???
Her arms began to slip out of the sleeves when he gripped her shoulder. His hazel gold eyes lingered down to her silver blue irises, giving her details of his stubble beard that had the slightest amount of white hairs. More heat crawled to her cheeks as he caught her stare.
“Keep it on. You’ll turn into an ice sculpture if you don't wear the jacket.” Cassian said.
“Thanks, but I’m fine.” Nesta managed to slip one arm free when Cassian grabbed the same arm with his other hand.
“Nesta. Keep the damn jacket on.” His voice was slightly sterned, eyeing her.
Her body acted on its own accord as her arm slipped back into the sleeve and her hand zipped up the jacket the whole way to the collar.
What is this? I’m an independent woman, I don’t listen to any man just because he thinks he knows what’s best for me. I didn’t minor in women studies for this–
“Come on, let’s get you somewhere warm.” Cassian grinned, walking over, he opened the passenger door. Holly slipped past her and jumped into the middle of the bar seat. Cassian flinched,  checking Holly briefly before he pulled away, returning his gaze to Nesta.
“Well, are you coming?” But before Nesta could reject his offer, Holly barked at her, making the ballerina jump slightly. Cassian turned to the dog. “That’s not very nice. You know you gotta stay good for old High Lord Solstice if you wanna remain on the nice list this year.” He warned his dog.
“You tell your dog solstice tales?” Nesta asked, a brow raised.
“That’s not the point.” Cassian pointed to the car. “In. Now.”
Mumbling underneath her breath regarding how much of a brute he was, Nesta made her way inside the truck. Cassian closed the door before hopping in from the driver’s side. Holly panted in Nesta’s face, trying to lick her face. The dogs’ breath rolled from her mouth to Nesta’s nose, making her cringe.
“No, please stop.” She mumbled, pushing the dog away slightly.
“Not a fan of dogs?” Cassian asked, turning on the car. The windshield wipers came on while air flowed to her face and legs. She shivered slightly in the coat, putting her seatbelt on. Cassian winced slightly at her reaction. “Sorry, the heat will come on soon. It’s an old car, so no seat warmers.” He began driving, turning on the radio.
“To answer your question, I’m not a fan of dogs in my face.” She eyed the golden retriever who just looked at her with big puppy dog eyes, waiting to be pet. Cassian laughed, and Nesta thought back to her earlier comment, making her blush. Quickly she looked at the passenger window as the world blurred into motion.
“A part of the reason why I bring Holly with me almost everywhere is because she keeps me warm during our drives. This was my mom’s truck, so to say it is old, well that would be an insult to her memory.”
His mother’s? Glancing at the rear view mirror, a small star ornament hung with a picture of a young boy and a woman. They both had giant smiles that seemed to be the same, only difference in size. They wore matching traditional solstice red hats and white sweaters. The woman seemed more like a girl, not looking older than twenty. The boy had to be between the ages of four and six, showing off his baby teeth in his grin.
Nesta didn’t have to take another look at Cassian to know he was the grown version of the little boy in the picture, but she couldn’t help herself to give a small glance at his side profile while he drove. His hair was pulled back in a bun, his jaw was strong and defined. Why is he so beautiful? No one can just look that good just because. She thought.
Music flowed from the radio, her head booped slowly to the melody, and then Nesta took in the lyrics of what she was listening to.
Now I'm down bad, cryin' at the gym / Everything comes out teenage petulance / "Fuck it if I can't have him" / "I might just die, it would make no difference"
Immediately, Nesta leaned over, changing the song. It was one of her favorites from the latest album, but this was clearly not the right time even if the universe was laughing at her demise. Trying to look away, Holly’s brown eyes caught her attention, pleading with the ballerina. Nesta groaned, giving in. Her hand patted the dog’s soft head. After a stroke or two, Nesta smiled softly, the dog leaned into her touch.
“Did you walk to work or something?” Cassian asked, turning onto a local street. Even with it being November and still several weeks away from Solstice, didn’t stop the town from decorating over a month early. Garlands with lights and bows hung across the roofs while there was a wreath on every lamp post.
“No, my roommate dropped me off. Just so happens my coat was also in her car last.” Nesta replied, keeping her comment short. Then something dawned on her, a realization sinking in as the truck stopped at a red light. “Wait, where the fuck are you taking me?” Flashes of the true crime documentaries Gwyn and Emerie made her watch for months when she wanted nothing to do with them because all they did was keep her up at night.
I know him, but I don’t know him. Was this his plan? Lured me in with a dog and everything. I’m not better than a child.
Cassian shrugged. “The farm.”
Nesta paled. “The farm?” Her fingers crept to the passenger side window, aiming to pull the lock up. Her mind went blank, the anxiety between her ribs grew, traveling to her heart. He’s going to kill me. I should’ve known this was too good to be true. You can’t be that HOT and SINGLE and be a good person. NOT that I wanted this to be true anyway.
He looked at her. “Yeah, the tree farm I run? Remember? It’s just right outside the city. I gotta pick up a few things to help decorate the town hall with. I’ve been going back and forth the whole day. It’s why I had to miss tonight’s session.” Cassian rolled his eyes. “Rhysand is wanting me to put up the trees so badly, but I told him that we should hold off until the end of November. The trees aren’t immortal, so they can’t just be in the town year around.”
Nesta gave him a bewildered look. “So you’re taking me to run errands with you?”
He blinked a few times, her question sinking in. “I guess I am…Huh, funny how that worked out.”
She eased into the seat, but kept a hand near the door just in case.
“I need the extra hands.” Cassian glanced down at Holly before he started driving again. “This one unfortunately has not learned how to grow thumbs yet, so I guess you’ll be my little helper today.”
Cassian caught her eye roll, so he pleaded. “Listen, I’ll make it up to you! Call in a favor, whatever you would like, and I’ll be there.” Then he added, “No matter what it is.”
Nesta raised a brow at his plea. “Are you serious? Whatever I want?”
“Well within reason! I refuse to commit any crimes.” He rushed out. She couldn’t help but let a small smile pass her lips, watching him become flustered.
“Do we have a deal?” Cassian asked after a moment, clearing his throat. His hands on the steering wheel, veins appeared as his grip tightened. Had his hands always been that big? He could lift her with one arm and spin her around like pizza dough.
“Nesta?” Cassian said her name. “Nestaaaa, you there?”
She jumped in her seat. “Uhm yeah. Deal.” She turned her face, leaning her head against the cold window, hoping it would cool down her heated cheeks.
~*~
When the truck pulled into the long driveway, Nesta didn’t catch any single sign of a solstice tree. When they pulled up to a log cabin style house, Cassian put the truck in park. “I won’t be long, I’m just grabbing a few boxes of leftover decorations.” He opened the door, turning around he pointed at Holly. “You’re in charge.”
“She’s a dog–”
Cassian shut his door, cutting Nesta off. She followed him with her eyes, leading inside his home. Huffing, she looked back down at Holly, who was now fully in her lap, laying down. “So much for being in charge.” She mumbled. Holly grunted back at the woman, her eyes slowly dropping into a cozy sleep. Unable to help herself, Nesta kept stroking Holly’s head, her fur so soft underneath her touch.
“I always wanted a dog, but Mother always forbade us from getting one.” Her fingers twirled pieces of fur, making sure to be gentle. “She said they were too much.” She glanced at the steering wheel. “I wonder, if Father was still around, would he have left her? Would my sisters and I do double holidays and birthdays every year?”
Winter Solstice was her father’s favorite holiday, not to mention Feyre’s birthday, so every year was a big deal in their household. Her parents would host a holiday party every Solstice eve with their rich friends while the girls were told to stay out of sight. It didn’t stop Feyre convincing Elain to sneak downstairs to grab cookies when no one was watching. Nesta kept her nose out of their schemes, wanting to do everything to avoid their mother’s wrath.
The eve parties stopped a year or two after their father had died. Josephine believed it would be a dishonor to his memory if they did anything fun on his favorite holiday. Even if it meant not celebrating Feyre’s own birthday. All three of her daughters stopped receiving presents after the third anniversary of her husband’s death. Josephine didn’t like to have big celebrations anymore, so instead she hosted dinner one night a year, around the time of solstice. It was the only day of the year that all four Archeron women were in the same room. No presents were exchanged, at least not in front of Josephine.
Leaning her head back, the inkling of the other day drowned in her thoughts when Nesta saw her mother last.
“This year, Nesta, you need to bring someone. You’re almost thirty, by the Gods. You’ve probably met so many people in the ballet company.” Josephine acknowledged, taking a bite out of her Wagyu steak in the lentil and pumpkin salad.
There was enough from her father’s estate that Josephine kept a few people on staff, including the family’s personal chef, Joel. Josephine must have given him a heads up that Nesta was coming to visit her today for lunch, as there was a plate set for Nesta too when she arrived.
“How about that Eris boy? You two have always been close.” Josephine suggested, eyeing her eldest daughter.
Nesta took a bite of her food to hide her sour expression that started to form. After a moment, she looked at her mother with a neutral expression. “Like I’ve said before, Mother. Eris and I are work colleagues, and thus dating within that circle would just bring unnecessary drama.” She then added. “He’s Lucien’s brother. And I’m not big on dating anyone related to someone that my sister is married to.”
What Nesta decided to not include in her statement to her mother was that Eris had no interest in her romantically or sexually. Or really any woman for that matter. Plus he still wasn’t over Tarquin, no matter what he said.
“Well, there’s so many other male dancers too. Or perhaps an actor from the Velaris theater.”
Nesta fucked a theater guy once. Once had been more than enough. “Why the sudden pressure, Mother? We’re both single women.”
Josephine’s hand struck the table. Nesta’s nails dug deep into her palm, trying to maintain her neutralness.
“I am a widow. I had a loving husband for almost two decades.” She pointed at Nesta. “You don’t know the first thing about love, girl. I’m only looking out for you, as I’ve always done.” Her glare was sharp as ever, but her tone, soft enough to fool anyone that she was apologetic. “I only want the best for my daughter, Nesta.”
A moment passed, giving Nesta a little bit of time to adjust and think of a response. But before she could say anything, her mother moved on. “Fix your posture, I didn’t raise you to be a slob.” On instinct, Nesta adjusted her back and shoulders. She looked at her mother, directly in the eyes that mirrored her own.
“Thank you, Mother. I’ll try my best.”
Josephine didn’t answer, instead went back to eating her lunch, moving onto a different topic.
A nearby door slammed shut, making Nesta jump a little. Her sudden movement made Holly sit up, confused as she licked her own nose. Peering through the passenger side window, Nesta watched as Cassian carried four larges in one stack as he made his way to the truck. The man was not that graceful on stage, but almost seemed to be a different person by the way the boxes were placed in the tailgate with ease.
Opening the door again, Cassian climbed back inside. Holly turned to him, her tail wagging in Nesta’s face. Nesta grimaced as she tried to back away from the tail. The light golden fur hit her directly in the nose and mouth.
“Oh sorry.” Cassian quickly apologized. “Sit down, Holly girl.” He glanced at his dog, who obeyed his command. She sat back down on the seat as Casian buckled his seat belt, turning the car on.
“What did you bring? Must have been pretty light, carrying four boxes like that.” Nesta looked behinded to the back windshield.
“Oh that? That was nothing. Tons of ornaments, flyers to hang up for the farm. There’s also a box of old books I wanted to donate to the local library.” He then added. “I’ve been meaning to do that, so I can always do that after I swing you by whenever you need to go.”
Nesta blinked once, then twice, ignoring his latter statement. “You carried all of that? In one go? And you’re not out of breath?” Cassian laughed. “Not a lot gets me out of breath, Nes.” He leaned in slightly into her space.
“Brute.” She mumbled as he laughed again, the engine starting up again. Pulling her phone out, she thought about what was going to say, the idea sinking into her mind. It wouldn’t hurt to see what Eris thought.
Nesta to Eris: I know what Cassian can do to help bring more grace to his performance.
He texted her back instantly.
Eris to Nesta: I’m listening.
Nesta to Eris: Give him something to hold or lift. He’s really strong.
Slipping her phone back into her pocket, she’ll read Eris’ response later. But by the rapid vibrations she felt, she could tell that maybe he was on board.
~*~
“Are you sure you don’t want me to drive you home?” Cassian asked.
“So you can find out where I live?” Nesta scuffed. “Not a chance, brute.”
Nesta told him to pull into Delvon’s lot, since the walk to her apartment was pretty short. Plus it gave her an excuse to get hot chocolate.
“Well in addition to the favor I owe you, how about I get you something warm for your walk? My treat.” Cassian suggested.
“I can pay for my own drink.”
“Let me get this for you, Nes. Like I said, my treat.”
I should say no…But the hot chocolate…Mentally, Nesta pouted, not sure what she should do. Glancing at the temperature that showed on her screen, she winced.
“Fine, but I’m not staying. As soon as I get my drink, I’m going home.”
Cassian smiled. “Fine by me, Sweetheart.”
The two walked in with Holly at Cassian’s side. Dogs were generally allowed in Delvon’s as long as they didn't cause too much of a hassle. Since the restaurant also operated as a cafe, they walked up to the registers.
“Excuse me, I would like a large peppermint mocha. And” he turned to Nesta.
“I’ll take a–”
“Ah, the hot chocolate girl.” The cashier said, bored. Large dark hot chocolate with whip cream, toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, chocolate drizzle.”
Nesta flushed, not expecting her order to be read out loud like that. But her back stiffened as embarrassment crawled into her cheeks, noting the last part of her drink was not stated. “With extra sprinkles.”
The cashier rolled their eyes. “Of course, how could I forget your little sprinkles?” They went off to get the drinks. With their back turned, Nesta stuck her tongue at them. Cassian chuckled, nudging Nesta. “Hey can I get extra sprinkles in mine too?”
The cashier turned back to them. “Seriously?”
Cassian shrugged. “Tis the season and all.”
Something fluttered inside her at Cassian’s request, but like all of her feelings in regards to him, Nesta pushed the thoughts away, hoping they would leave. He paid while their drinks were being made. Within moments both of their drinks were done.
Nesta sighed, feeling the steam hit her in the face. Gently she took a sip, the hot drink warming her right up. A rare bright smile fell upon her lips at the taste. Looking over at Cassian, she nodded. “Thanks for this. How are your sprinkles?” She asked.
Cassian smacked his lips. “Not bad. And no problem, Hot Chocolate Girl.”
Her smile instantly dropped, going back to her staple glare. “Don’t push it, Cassian.”
He only laughed at her reaction. “I won’t. But next time you want hot chocolate, let me know. I can make that from scratch at home, and probably be at least twenty times better.” She narrowed her eyes at him. “Better than Delvon’s? I’m not sure if you can ever come close to topping that.”
“Watch me, Nes.” He smirked before opening the door for her. Rolling her eyes, she walked out with Cassian behind her. “I expect to drink some of this hot chocolate at some point, Tree Man.”
“Tree Man?” Cassian shook his head. “You need to be a better flirt, Nesta.”
She spun around, looking straight at him. “Who said I was flirting?” He only smiled before he pulled her close. The sudden movement made Nesta’s brain stop, which was why when he leaned his thumb down, wiping away the whip cream on her upper lip, she didn’t do anything.
Licking the access, he smiled. “Delicious.”
Was it anger or was she turned on, Nesta didn’t know. But she glared at him before storming away. She heard Cassian laugh. “See you in two days, partner.”
I will not think of him until I see him again. Nesta swore, marching to her apartment that was only a block away. However in the long run, Cassian never left her mind. In fact, her thoughts only intensified when she was alone.Annoyed by her own reaction, Nesta turned on the TV, but the only things on were Hallmark movies. Reaching for her the last sips of her drink, she frowned. The hot chocolate now laid cold, all of the warmth gone. Mumbling, ‘of course’ as she threw it into the waste bin.
Sighing, she mumbled. “Tis the damn fucking season.”

Every year, the festival ends on the Winter Solstice, with a performance by the Velaris Ballet Company. And every year they perform the holiday classic, The Nutcracker.
Nine weeks until Winter Solstice
Cassian woke up with the heating pad, that rested underneath his calves, had turned off during the night. It had only been almost a week since Cassian started practicing with Nesta, and he already thought about quitting at least seventy-seven times. An achy sigh left him, as he tried to move his legs slightly. Beside him, Holly, was curled up, sleeping away.
The desk that was against the nearby wall was covered in old files and freshly paid bills. Scattered among the paperwork sat Cassian’s tree farm journal for that season. Every year, Cassian bought the same leather bound journal so he could document that year’s trees of what could be sold, and what needed more time.
His palm slid down his face, dragging his eyes and lips. “Holly, I think I flew too close to the sun.” He grunted. “I mean what the hell was I thinking? I run a whole tree farm by myself and I have the genius idea to decide to join a ballet? All for a woman??” Cassian complained.
The dog lifted her head slightly, as if to resemble shrugging. Her reddish fur nearly blended into the bronze colored comforter. She nestled her head back down, her brown eyes drooping slowly with a haze of tiredness. Withholding another sigh, Cassian reached over to Holly, gently petting her back and side. Being close to her always made him feel better.
“Good girl.” He mumbled before pulling his hand away.
Holly immediately lifted her head as if to say ‘who said you could stop?’ Cassian rolled his eyes before scratching her soft ears, the dog groaned with approval.
Moving his body sent the reminder that the soreness in his legs was still there. His mind drifted back to the first day of rehearsals, apparently not prepared at all in the slightest.
Walking through the double doors of the dance studio, Cassian’s work boots squeaked against the vinyl flooring. He let out a slight hiss, his ears sensitive to the sound. With his red flannel on and black t-shirt underneath, he went to the center of the room. He faced the mirrors that covered the whole length of the wall. A dimple appeared on his left cheek as he smiled sheepishly. Dropping his duffle bag to the floor, he began posing and flexing his arms. The thick muscles popping in the studio lighting. He turned around then proceeded to look over his shoulder, seeing the curve of his butt.
‘Who’s got an ass like me?’ He thought as his head swung to the other shoulder, looking back a second time.
“I see you made yourself acquainted with the studio–what the hell are you doing?” A familiar voice shrieked into the room.
Spinning around, Cassian came face to face with Nesta. He had to do a double take as took her in. Wherever he had seen her, she always seemed tall, possibly close to his height. But staring just a few feet away, Cassian finally took note of her actual height, with her head barely reaching his shoulder.
Her golden brown hair in a braid that ran over the top of her head. Her blue-gray eyes reflected from the ceiling lights as she glared at him. He smiled, his face burning from embarrassment.
“Making sure your mirrors work.”
Not missing a beat, Nesta retorted. “They’re mirrors, how would they not work?”
“You never know, maybe Eris installed mirrors from a fun house overnight. Halloween is right around the corner.” Cassian tried to laugh but the glare that Nesta held made the laughter die off.
Ignoring him, Nesta walked up next to him. “It’s just you and me for today. I’ll be going over basics and then we’ll get into the story of the ballet. But first.” Nesta eyed him up and down. “You need to change your clothes.”
“What’s wrong with my clothes?” Cassian asked, glancing at his shirt and jeans.
He watched uneasily (and perhaps slightly turned on) as Nesta grew red, matching his flannel. Her blue-gray eyes glared the sharpest of daggers while she clenched her bottom lip in between her teeth. Cassian pulled at the collar of his shirt, feeling the sensation of sweat begin to appear on the back of his neck.
‘What’s life without poking a bear from time to time…’
“I mean, if we’re just doing simple things, jeans will suffice right?” Cassian asked, crossing his arms over his chest, the sleeves of the flannel snugged. He could have sworn that Nesta’s eye wouldn’t stop twitching for almost six seconds when she turned on her heel, abruptly leaving the studio.
“Well, good thing I did bring a change of clothes.” Cassian mumbled to himself, beginning to undress. The flannel and shirt were now on the floor, leaving his chest bare with his pants still on when the studio doors slammed opened, Nesta appearing in the doorway, the red in her face nowhere to be found. She began speaking but immediately stopped when she saw him. Instead of red, all Cassian saw was pink sitting heavy on her cheeks as her eyes trailed the black swirls across his shoulders and chest.
“You like what you see?” Cassian taunted?
Snapping out of her fantasy gaze, Nesta glared at him. “Excuse me?”
Disregarding her completely, Cassian carried on their previous conversation like she hadn’t just stormed out. “Oh, I’m just changing into the workout clothes I brought with me.” Cassian kicked the bag next to him. “Did you really think I would dance in jeans?” He teased, his hands travelling to his belt.
“For the love of the Mother! This isn’t the locker room–No! Do not leave this room shirtless!” Nesta shrieked. She pushed some of the strands of hair that slipped from her braid back, taking a deep breath before she looked at him again.
“Get dressed, I’ll wait outside, and let me know once you’re done. We’ll start then.” Nesta spun on her heel leaving once more.
“Any chance you want to join–”
“Do not finish that question.” She glared at him before slamming the door shut.
Whistling low, Cassian quickly changed into his other set of clothes. The gray tank and joggers should be fine for a little old dance lesson.
“How bad could this be?”
His feet landed on the floor next to his bed, a loud groan exploding from his mouth. The muscles of his lower half screamed in pain as his feet made contact with the heated wooden floor. Holding back a whimper, Cassian stood up. Clenching his lip in between his teeth, Cassian tried to hold back the whimper that wanted to leave. Reaching down to the nightstand, he grabbed his phone. His heart sank, noticing there weren’t any new messages. Trying to ignore the disappointment, Cassian headed to the door, a stiff limp in his step.
“That woman is evil, Holly. She is the Grinch incarnate. Her heart is two sizes too small, dare I say three! Probably has no Winter Solstice spirit in her either.” Cassian exclaimed, opening the door to head to the kitchen. At the sound of door creaking, Holly perked her head before stretching. Cassian looked back at her mumbling “big stretch”.
Using the doggy steps on the other side of the bed, Holly padded her way towards Cassian. Thankfully the cabin was all one floor so they reached the kitchen, a few paces slower than usual. Going to the counter, Cassian started to brew his morning coffee. The coffee machine slowly warmed up the water, the heat slowly setting in. Waiting for his drink, Cassian peered at the kitchen table, catching the script for the ballet open, exactly how he had left it.
“Not not script, Nesta called it a libretto I think?” He mumbled to himself as he walked over, the coffee beginning to fill his mug. Picking up the stapled packet that read The Lady and the Fool, he began reading over the story for the seventh time since Nesta gave it to him.
“The story follows a noble lady, La Capricciosa, who stumbles across two court jesters, Moondog and Bootface, on a bench sleeping.” His voice was soft as he sat down at the table. Holly sat by his feet, waiting for her breakfast.
“She’s on her way to the nearby ball when she runs into them and asks them to dance and join her at the ball.” Cassian squinted at the next set of words. “The three dance and then the lady drags the two jesters to the ball anyways.” Placing her head on his knee, Holly’s tail wagged. Cassian put the packet down, looking at Holly.
“Ready to eat little lady?” Ears perked forward, her brown eyes big, the dog pulled away, moving excitedly. Getting up from the table, Cassian made his way over to her food, prepping it before placing the bowl down.
As the dog ate her breakfast, Cassian picked up his peppermint coffee, before making his way back to the table to read more. He noted the stage directions and ballet moves he was unfamiliar with marked in the document as he continued to read. His eyes skimmed over the pages until he saw his character, Moondog, appear again.
“Come on, I’m not that down bad just for one person” He mumbled to himself.
Picking her head up from the food bowl, Holly stared at him for a moment. Cassian huffed, catching his dog’s stare. Placing the packet down, brow raised. “Really?” The dog said nothing as she went back to eating.
When Cassian went to read again, his phone buzzed. Immediately grabbing it from his pocket, he saw on the screen messages that made his heart stop.
Nesta ❤️ (future wife): Come to the studio today, Eris will be here.
Nesta ❤️ (future wife): If you don’t come then you’ll have to do double the amount of exercises needed to be done.
Cassian winced at  Nesta’s threats, feeling the tender pain in his calves. It was the first heard from her since their last lesson that was two days ago, and ended in disaster.
“Cassian! I said third position, why are you in fifth?” Nesta cursed, her brow furrowed.
It had been days into training that caused Cassian to snap back. Turning around to face her, he glared.
“You know, you could be nicer. I’m not an expert in this shit.”
“It’s not shit, it’s ballet. It’s an art form.” She pointed her finger at him. “You signed up for this, so don’t be throwing a hissy fit now.”
He scuffed, pulling the tie in his hair out, sliding it onto his wrist. “I understand it’s an art form, Nes, but you’re no sugar cookie for a newbie like me.”
“I’m not meant to be teaching a grown man childlike basics.” She sneered. “And for the last time, my name is Nesta.”
“Well I’m the one Eris wanted, so I’m here whether you like it or not.” He sighed before continuing. “I just need some time to adjust.” Cassian jeered.
“We don’t have time for this, Cassian!” Nesta exclaimed. “We’re almost eight weeks until the Winter Solstice. We need you to be caught up by next week when you start attending rehearsals with the other dancers. I refuse to look stupid in front of my peers.”
Rolling his eyes, Cassian threw his arms open wide. “Nesta, I’m trying my best!”
Unphased, she said. “Your best isn’t efficient.”
“Go again.” She demanded.
Cassian shook his head, grabbing his bag. “Forget this. I’m done for the day.”
“You’re done when I say you are.”
He stalked towards her, clearly almost a foot taller. Nesta didn’t scurry, she glared hard enough to send imaginary daggers from her gaze. “Maybe that’s your issue, Nes.”
“And pray tell, what is my issue?” She countered.
“You’re a control freak that can’t accept change. I wanted to do something new this year for the solstice, but you just can’t accept anything outside the walls you’ve built.” Cassian huffed, his palms sweaty from the slow rising anger. “Maybe this was a mistake.” His shoulder bumped into her, making his way to the door
“Giving up, just like that?” Nesta shouted, her gaze angry, but for a second he swore he could have seen a flash of regret somewhere in those cloud-color eyes.
“Yeah, I guess not everyone can be in ballet huh? So much for being inclusive.” Cassian yelled back before slamming the studio door shut.
He hissed, the memory fading away. It had been two days without a word from either of them. The guilt ate Cassian alive as he wilted over his poor choice of words.
This was something new to her too, I shouldn’t have been so hard on her. It wasn’t right to take my anger out on her. Cassian tugged at his ponytail, trying his best to suppress anxiety of the last words he said to her.
Glancing at the screen, Cassian began to type out a response. Unfortunately, he was lost to his thoughts, backspacing everything he wrote. After the third attempt, Cassian gave up, placing his phone down on the table. Padding her way over, Holly went up to Cassian, resting her head on his knee again. He scratched behind her ears, the anxiety starting to fade.
“Maybe I should start work for the day, and answer her later–”
Then his phone began buzzing, the vibrations indicating an incoming call. His palms were clammy picking it up, Nesta’s contact flashed on the screen. Cassian hesitated just slightly before answering.
“Hello–”
“I saw that you were typing and then you stopped. When are you coming?” Nesta’s voice seemed normal on the other side. No flux of anger or disappointment from her words. Maybe something was in between the words she spoke, but he didn’t wish to be that hopeful.
“Nes, I don’t think I’m cut out for this.”
She sighed before she started speaking again. “Look, I said some not nice things the other day. I’m really stressed from rehearsals and…” She sighed again. “Nothing, it’s nothing. I don’t know why I called.”
Cassian sat up. “No, you called me for a reason, Nesta. Do you need me?”
He was met with silence. It went on for a minute, perhaps two, before Cassian couldn’t take it. “Nesta?”
“Look, we wanted you for the role. Can you show up or not? Eris wants to help up, and since he’s the director, he can give you the vision he’s looking for.”
“What time do you need me there?”
“8:30 sharp.”
Cassian peered over to the clock on the wall, doing a double take. “Nesta! It’s 8:15! It takes me at least a half hour to get downtown.”
He could hear her shrug as she answered. “You asked. I’ll see soon.”
The call then ended, leaving Cassian in shambles as he quickly went back the steps, wincing at every step his feet made contact with before reaching his closet and quickly changing into workout clothes. Running the best he could back down, Cassian grabbed his keys when he met Holly’s stare. She looked sad, sitting by the front door.
“Holly girl, don’t do this to me right now.” He begged as she gave him her strongest puppy dog eyes.
“This isn’t fair, Holly!” He sighed dramatically, grabbing her leash.
“We’re going to be late, come on!” Cassian exclaimed as he raced over to his old red pick-up truck. Azriel had given him shit over the beat-up vehicle that resembled Bella Swan’s truck from the Twilight movies. When Cassian had questioned him how he knew that, Azriel sputtered that Gwyn was watching them one day and he just so happened to catch a thing or two when he looked up.
Opening the passenger side door, Cassian picked up Holly, then placed her down in the passenger seat. Once he was inside the car himself with the keys in the ignition, he breathed in then out.
“We can do this.”
~*~
“I’m sorry for running a little late, people who live in the heart of the city are the worst drivers sometimes.” Cassian said, dropping his bag onto the floor, along the edge of the wall. Holly’s paws walked over the vinyl flooring, laying down next to his stuff.
“Oh so good for you to make it–Why did you bring your dog?” Eris raised a brow that matched his red hair, looking over at the golden retriever.
“It doesn’t matter, I’m here.” Cassian huffed out. His arms were now sore as he sprinted from his car, carrying the old dog through the halls until he got to the dance studio.
“Good that you finally showed up.” A voice called from the other side of Eris.
Nesta glanced his way, eyeing him quickly before she turned to the director. “He needs all of the help he can get. He’ll be a laughing stock if you don’t work out the kinks.” She stood next to the male dancer, her arms crossed.
“Cassian catches on fast, and granted we aren’t looking for skill for this role, but he needs to be able to keep up with the pacing.”
Did she just compliment me? Cassian’s chest tightened ever so slightly from Nesta’s words. He tried to remind himself his face was flushed because of the sprint, not because she said nice things about him.
Eris hummed for a moment, taking a long look at Cassian. The farmer fidgeted just slightly, feeling the auburn gaze. The heels of Eris’ dress shoes padded softly, stepping around Cassian. What was he analyzing? What is Eris seeing? Eris then gestured to Nesta a moment later. “Start the music. The sprint should be a good enough warm up.”
Nesta went to the bluetooth speaker on a nearby small table, starting the simple piano music. It filled the studio with its quiet keys. Cassian made his way to the center of the room. Nesta moved so she was standing next to him. She looked at him in the mirrors and asked. “Are you ready?”
“Hell yeah.” Cassian shined a cocky grin at her reflection, catching the slight blush on her cheeks.
Nesta cleared her throat. “Remember, we are not asking you to become a ballet dancer in nearly eight weeks. But knowing the basics will help the flow of the story.” She gave the tiniest of smiles, Cassian had to squint to see it before it disappeared from view. “Keep up, tree man.”
“You’re on, ballerina.”
Following the beat of the music, Nesta and Cassian went through the positions one through five first with their feet and then their arms and then combined together. He was more stiff than flexible compared to Nesta, so his stances weren’t nearly as elegant.
“Lift your arms just slightly, yeah just like that, Cas.” The nickname slipped from her lips but Cassian already had it replaying in his mind. Cassian adjusted his position to match Nesta’s as best he could. Eris came around, making slight corrections with his arms and legs. It should seem invasive, but Cassian didn’t mind as he knew this was the job.
“You’re pretty quick, Fassion. Maybe not as nimble as Nesta or I, but we can still work with this.” He said, a finger on his chin.
“Starting tomorrow you’ll be meeting the rest of the cast, including the other court jester, Balathzar. Most of your scenes will include him so he’ll also be a great asset for you.” Eris looked to Cassian. “Have you read through the story yet?”
“The libretto you mean? Yeah I was rereading it this morning before Nesta called me.” Cassian answered. His muscles ached still, but the pain was becoming tolerable. “I think it’s a story hopefully the audience will love. It’s different enough to peak interest in a new ballet over the Nutcracker, but gives that classic tale of a love story.” Cassian looked in between them. “Who doesn’t love an underdog story?”
Eris glanced at Nesta. “Good job, prima.” He slid his hands into his pockets. “Nesta’s right, you catch on fast, but I’m not too worried. I was expecting someone who’s just as bad as my cousin’s husband.”
Nesta shook her head, bits of loose hair swung.. “Don’t let her hear that. She’ll demand dance lessons for both of them from you.”
“And not you? You’re her other best friend that isn’t her business partner.”
Cassian didn’t know much about Eris or his family, so this was all news to him. He looked back and forth between the two dancers as they continued speaking. “I’ve already put my foot down that I’m not teaching anyone dance above the age of twenty-one.” She looked over at Cassian. “He’s the expectation, given the circumstances.”
Cassian flushed, pulling at his collar. “Glad to be here regardless.”
Eris held his hands in a mock surrender before heading to the door. “Anyway, I have to meet my brother for a quick chat. See you both tomorrow.” As the red head went to the door, he patted Holly goodbye before shutting the door to leave.
“Ready to keep going?” Nesta asked, her stormy gaze on Cassian once more.
“I’m ready for anything you throw at me, Sweetheart.”
A smirk pulled at her lips. “Be careful what you wish for. You may regret saying that.”

OR Nesta Archeron is the principle ballerina of the Velaris Ballet Company, playing the lead role of The Lady and the Fool, with her counter part, Cassian Pine.
AN: Hello Hello! We're back with the third chapter! I hope you all enjoy, espeically you @emeriethevalkyriegirl. Note: Ester is @emeriethevalkyriegirl's OC. <3
Ten weeks until Winter Solstice.
“He brought his dog!?” Emerie exclaimed.
The dancer took a tiny sip of her drink, careful of the heat steaming from the mug. She ordered it the same way every time: a large dark hot chocolate with whip cream, toasted marshmallows, cinnamon, chocolate drizzle, and extra sprinkles.
“Yes! Can you believe that?” Nesta huffed, taking another small sip of the hot chocolate.
It was October so the mountain air had grown cold over the last few weeks. Winter would be knocking on their front doors soon enough. Nesta smiled softly at the thought of her favorite season as she counted down the days until the predicted first snowfall. There was a widget on her phone that had the snow predictions all year long.
Most people would shy away from the cold, but Nesta only thrived in it. Perhaps it was the coping mechanism her younger self created as it was the one time of year that her mother would stay inside her townhouse, fearing the snow and icy roads. Any other time of the year, her mother followed her like a shadow and made passive aggressive comments.
Nesta loved the winter season more than just being a barrier from her mother. There was something beautiful in the stillness the cold weather created. A frozen scene laid before her eyes everywhere she turned. And then of course the decorations for winter solstice just made the nights so stunning. The lights and trees and beautifully wrapped presents. The smell of peppermint in the air brought out a small joy in her.
Of course she shared her favorite season with the birth of her youngest sister. While they had their quarrels growing up, Nesta and Feyre had a healthier relationship now as adults. But she wasn’t entirely close with either of her blood-related sisters compared to her found sisters. Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie had all found each other during troubling times in their lives.
“We’re just bonding over the endless amount of fuckery that life gives us.” Gwyn poured all three of them a shot of brandy, laughing at Emerie’s comment. She passed a glass to each sister before she held her own off the counter. “To the trauma that makes sisterhood.”
“To the shit we still have to deal with.” Nesta mumbled, a small smile upon her lips.
“To the endless amount of therapy bills.” Emerie shouted.
The three found sisters threw back their shots before all of them scrunched up their noses and made faces as the alcohol went down their throats, burning.
Memories of their friendship burned the brightest in Nesta’s mind when she thought of her loved ones. It didn’t mean she didn’t love Elain or Feyre, she did, but Gwyn and Emerie understood in ways that her younger sisters didn’t at all.
Her parents were a different story when it came to loved ones. Complexiliaty ran its course for Nesta when it came to both of them. She wasn’t particularly close with either of her parents, but eventually her father had apologized for how he was never there for her or his other daughters.
And barely being twenty then, Nesta assumed her relationship with her father would only improve from there. However life had other plans when Nesta’s father died in a car accident not long after he spoke to her. What goes up must come down eventually, six feet into the ground.
Josephine was solely dependent on her husband, so naturally Nesta was the next one in line. Thankfully their father had drafted a will a year prior after a close family friend’s husband died unexpectedly, leaving that family with nothing. He left his wife his entire estate and majority of his savings. All three daughters were left a decent amount in a trust fund. Their family wasn’t struggling compared to others, but Josephine’s temper had darkened since her husband passed.
It was common knowledge between Nesta and her sisters that Josephine never wanted to be a mother and then she became a single parent, their only parent. For a while after his death, Nesta would spend an ungodly amount with her mother, wanting to shield her younger sisters away from the shit storms that spiraled. It was a major reason why Nesta chose to attend the local university instead of going abroad.
Josephine’s behavior was slowly chipping away at Nesta through the years, even after graduation. It wasn’t until Gwyn mentioned to her that she needed to rely on her sisters more.
“You all grew up in that house together. Maybe you weren’t raised by the same person, but you love them and they love you. It’s okay to rely on people when you need to.”
It gave Nesta a spoonful of courage to speak to her sisters a few years ago, discussing their mother. Nesta was the last one to move out and still was spending time with their mother weekly. The three sisters expressed how awful their childhood was with their parents. Josephine held each of her daughters to different standards; standards they could never reach.
“She wanted me to be an art history professor at the local university. And while I love art history and teaching, I love teaching art classes to all ages at my studio. Especially little ones and older people. They’re my favorite groups to teach. Anyone can be an artist with enough practice.” Feyre mentioned.
“Mother deemed me beautiful enough to settle for any rich man. But that was it. I wasn’t supposed to be smart, let alone a public school biology teacher. I’m the first one in the whole family to have a master’s degree. She didn’t even try to come to my graduation.” Elain spoke softly.
“I was her creation. She wanted me to be as powerful as a queen, but I’ve never enjoyed politics to that degree. I found freedom in dance, where it was me pushing myself to the higher standard, not her. She hates how it’s become my life, but I honestly haven’t been happier than when I'm on stage.” Nesta’s pain laced through her words.
It was there that the three decided to share the dreaded responsibility that was their mother. Each week one of them would spend at least a day with her. She would complain, yell, and gossip about her other daughters. It was driving them all mad, but Josephine played the guilt card over and over again that it became a permanent resident in their minds.
A sigh settled from Nesta’s lips, thinking about her family, when her phone buzzed. Pulling it out of her cardigan pocket, she saw a text message from Feyre.
Traumatic Shitter: Convince me not to get blackout drunk when I get home from mother’s.
Trauma Slut to the group chat, “DSAMA (Daughters Surviving Abusive Mothers Anonymous)”: That bad, huh?
Traumatic Shitter: Alcohol isn’t a good coping mechanism but I fear that’s the only way I can wash out the things mom says. Also, is it rude to say that she needs to get laid?
Traumatized Succulent: Don’t you have an art class to teach tomorrow morning?
Trauma Slut to the group chat, DSAMA: Ew, I don’t want to think of our mother getting laid.
Traumatic Shitter: What if mom gets laid before you do again?
Trauma Slut: I hope you shit yourself again before you make it to the bathroom
Traumatic Shitter: STOP BRINGING UP MY GI ISSUES!
Traumatized Succulent laughed at “What if mom gets laid before you do again?”
Traumatized Succulent liked “I hope you shit yourself again before you make it to the bathroom”
Traumatic Shitter: YOU’RE NOT HELPING ELAIN
Fighting back a smile, Nesta shook her head before slipping her phone back in her pocket when a flash of red hair caught her eye as the door opened. A wide grin crossed her lips, seeing Gwyn speed walk to the booth before sliding down next to Emerie.
“Sorry I’m late! Azriel and Ester showed up to the store unannounced right as I was closing up.”
“Well good thing the kid was there. Who knows when you would’ve showed up if it was just Azriel.” Emerie observed, giving Gwyn a look over, searching for any stolen kisses that had left their mark.
“Em!” Gwyn scolded before she hit Emerie on the arm, who laughed at her reaction.
Nesta smiled at her two best friends while they bickered back and forth. Eventually a waiter came on by asking for Gwyn’s order.
“I’ll take a cheeseburger with extra pickles, tomatoes, onions, mayo, and no lettuce Oh! And old bay fries!” Gwyn cheerfully said.
The waitress looked bored out of her mind as she wrote down Gwyn’s order before walking away.
“Oh! And can I have a Pepsi Zero Cherry flavor?! I know Delvon has that stocked up somewhere!”
From the kitchen’s open window, a man’s voice called out. “Not a chance, Berdara!”
Gwyn opened her mouth but the man spoke again. “And don’t bring up your police officer boyfriend! That card has been used and is now expired. Get your own.”
She stuck her tongue at the window before she turned her gaze to her friends. “Rude.”
“Delvon makes great food, but that’s the only reason why anyone comes here. The service is terrible.” Emerie mumbled. Nesta nodded in agreement, taking another sip of her hot chocolate.
Pulling her drink away from her lips, Emerie and Gwyn began to giggle. Gwyn tried to cover her hand over her lips, but the grin peaked through. Emerie threw her head back, her shoulders shaking with laughter.
“What?” Nesta asked. “What’s so funny?”
Gwyn pointed to her own upper lip, mimicking something on them. Flushing pink, Nesta grabbed a nearby napkin, wiping her mouth. The cream easily came off, although she licked her part of her lips, savoring the peppermint taste. Nesta playfully rolled her eyes as her friends continued to laugh before she joined in.
“This is a restaurant, not a comedy house!” Delvon yelled from the kitchen.
“Bastard.” Nesta mumbled underneath her breath.
“So, you mentioned something about a dog in the group chat?” Gwyn asked Nesta. The waitress returned with a burger and a pepsi, placing it in front of the red head, before walking away. Her friend took a sip then proceeded to pout, probably at the lack of cherry flavoring.
“Apparently at auditions today for the ballet, a guy showed up with his dog.” Emerie chimed in.
Gwyn tilted her head. “Like a service animal?”
“Nope.” Nesta’s lips popped on the ‘p’. She stirred her drink around with a candy cane, wanting to erase everything from those auditions.
“I mean, who does that? That’s an insult to ballet! To art itself.”
“I mean it sounds kinda funny…” Emerie joked.
Nesta glared. “It’s not.”
“How did my cousin take that?” Gwyn asked. The world was small knowing that Nesta’s boss just so happened to be Gwyn’s oldest cousin “He gave the guy the spot, no questions asked!” Nesta said, glaring at her drink, the heat was slowly fading away.
Peering at her, Gwyn asked yet another question. “Are we sure you’re not mad about something else?”
“What do you mean?”
Gwyn shrugged. “It sounds like it’s more the guy than the dog or my cousin. And if my unofficial detective radar is going off correctly, you know this man.”
Emerie perked up, looking at Nesta. “You didn't say that!”
Nesta waved to her friends, making an “x” motion with her arms. “No! I don’t…I mean…I don’t know him.”
“But?” Her friends pressed.
Sighing, Nesta slumped in her seat. “It’s the guy from last year, the one who gave me his number.”
“You mean the same one who’s number you lost?!” Emerie exclaimed.
Nesta shushed her. “I would rather not have the whole diner know my personal business.”
“Nesta! It’s been a year! You told us he was hot!”
“That’s besides the point!”
Emerie raised a brow. “Then why the cold feet?”
“I don’t know…Maybe my mother’s right…I am too much.” Nesta curled her arms around herself, her mother’s voice sinking through her mind.
“Do you always have to be so opinionated? It’s not ladylike, you know.”
“Nesta please, you are just too much sometimes. No man will want you if you keep that up.”
There was a soft grip on her arm, making her lift her head from the dreaded thoughts. Gwyn’s eyes eased with a gentleness that Nesta had grown to cherish. Taking a deep breath, Nesta adjusted her position, easing herself from a spiral. Emerie held out a hand for her that Nesta instantly took. Gwyn took Emerie’s other hand, squeezing gently. The three friends shared a look between them all before they leaned in so that their heads were close together.
Gwyn spoke quietly. “It’s easy to fall for the words in your head.” Smiling, Emerie continued. “But when you hear those thoughts.” Finally, Nesta concluded their little mantra. “Tell them to fuck off.”
Pulling away, the three smiled. It was something they came up with years ago while they discussed their traumas and fears. It wasn’t a cure all for the challenges they faced, but it saved them from drowning too deep.
“So, run that by us one more time.” Gwyn asked, taking a sip of her cold soda.
Nesta pursed her lips. “I guess I was nervous…I still am. I mean the guy is so tall, and he apparently runs the winter solstice tree farm around here.”
Gwyn raised an eyebrow before she coughed, her hand hitting her chest. Nesta sat up, grabbing a few napkins. Emerie hit her back hard, making Gwyn wince. “Fuck you.” She croaked
“Listen, it helped right?” The two glared at one another before laughing.
“Sorry, I guess I never heard those details before about the mystery man.” Gwyn sheepishly said.
Nesta narrowed her eyes. “Well I didn’t know until today…Do you know something, Berdara?”
Before Gwyn could respond however, Emerie pulled out a set of cards, placing them on the table. Nesta sighed, rolling her eyes. “Not again, Em.”
“Matilda doesn’t lie! You need to put trust in the deck, Nesta.” Emerie shuffled her tarot deck before spreading them across the table. Gwyn made sure to shift her dinner plate away from the spread. “Let’s see if this guy is even worth being in your life.”
Nesta had her quarrels about Emerie’s tarot card readings. She didn’t necessarily believe in it all, but there were times that Emerie had given them readings that hit too close to be real. “Who even names their deck?” Nesta teased.
“I do, witch. Now choose three cards. These three cards will represent your past, present, and future. We’ll keep it simple and just relate it back to your love life. Do not flip them until I say, okay?”
“Fine.” Nesta’s voice dragged before she glanced down the deck. Her fingers floated above the deck. The cards were black with silver stars painted on the back. Her fingers landed on the first card, near one end of the deck. Gently, Nesta pulled the card away, making sure to keep it facedown. Following suit, Nesta grabbed two more cards from various parts before all three were in front of her.
“Okay great. Now hold on.” Emerie went through her bag before pulling out a book that was close to falling apart. The spine was loose, coffee stains were easily spotted, the pages were doggy-eared. Nesta shutter a little while looking at it. “Alright, go ahead.”
Picking up the first card, Nesta flipped it over and blinked once then twice. It was death, but upside down. Her gray blue eyes floated to Emerie’s hazel golden ones. “That first card represents your past. Continue to the next one.” Emerie encouraged her.
The second card Nesta flipped over was the one in the middle. It was The Fool, but right side up this time. Her hands pushed up at her cheeks. What are the odds I get a card of the same name of the damn ballet.
“Okay, cool! This is your present. Now it’s time for your future. Flip the last card.”
Not wanting to keep the suspense, Nesta immediately flipped the last remaining card over. The card happened to be The Lovers, again rightside up. Her stomach flipped uneasily, staring at the final card.
Emerie glanced at all three cards as her gaze wandered from those to her book. She went back and forth before shutting the book. “Alright, well this is quite interesting.”
“Oh this is going to be good!” Gwyn said before biting into her burger.
“So let's start with your past. You have The Death in reverse. Which means the following, you have a fear of change and you would rather decay away before changing anything first.”
Gwyn whispered low. “Yikes.”
“I don’t need your commentary, peanut gallery.” Nesta glared at Gwyn. The redhead only playfully glared back, knowing that her found sister all too well.
“Is the card referencing Tomas?” Nesta complained to Emerie.
Emerie shrugged. “I mean, was he your last boyfriend?”
“..Yeah.” Nesta sighed.
“And didn’t you swear off anyone after things ended between the two of you?”
“Fuck, Tomas! Fuck relationships. I don’t need that. I have my books, I have you two. I don’t need anything else!” Nesta pursed her lips, refusing to answer. That was about two years ago. Nesta hadn’t been with anyone since.
Emerie got the message, giggling slightly. “Right, well onto the next card. We have The Fool right side up.” She pointed to the middle card. “This means that in your present, there's a sense of new beginnings, free spirited, and perhaps even innocence.”
“I’m hardly innocent, Em.” Nesta huffed.
She rolled her eyes. “It doesn’t need to mean the innocence of a virgin, at least not for your case. It could mean that you’ll experience something new.”
“What exact new thing am I going to experience?”
Gwyn held a fry in her hand, a bit of mayo and ketchup on the tip. “Well for starters, you have a dance partner who doesn’t know how to dance, and yet the two of you will perform together.”
Emerie held up her hand to her business partner. “Stop swinging your food around.” She then turned to Nesta. “But Gwyn has a point.”
Nesta groaned. “Please don’t remind me.”
“And lastly.” Emerie said, choosing to ignore her friend. “The lovers. This card represents your future. It was right side up, so your future could hold a partnership or a union with something.”
“So in simple terms, maybe give the guy a chance. You never know what you’ll get out of a guy like that.”
Gwyn smiled brightly before eating her food.
“You say that as you know Cassian.”
“Is that his name?” Emerie whispered.
Gwyn coughed. “Never met a Cassian in my life.”
Nesta blinked, watching Gwyn try to fight a smile off her face. She rubbed at her freckled covered arm, avoiding Nesta’s gaze. The bookstore owner seemed squeamish the more Nesta stared at her.
“What do you know?” Nesta asked, her nails began to tap against the table.
But before Gwyn could say anything more, her phone rang. Pulling it out of her pocket, the FaceTime ringing tone echoed around the restaurant. A few people looked their way before shrugging off the sound.
“Az–Oh Hi Ester. What’s up?” Gwyn answered.
Ester was Gwyn’s and Azriel’s foster child that had been living with them for a few years. While she was a little trouble maker, the girl was also very sweet.
“Gwyn! Look at the kittens! I dressed them all in matching solstice outfits!” Ester giggled.
The redhead awed at the screen then showed her friends who followed suit. There three black kittens dressed in traditional solstice red hats and sweaters for the winter season. Emerie pouted at the three little animals while Nesta’s cold stare melted into a bright smile.
Since she was young, Nesta loved cats. However, her mother always forbade the family from getting pets. She thought she could finally get one after she moved out, but since Emerie was allergic to fur, Nesta still wasn’t able to have any pets in her home.
“Emerald, Alice, and Emily are going to get their payback one day, kid.” A deep voice said off screen.
Gwyn’s face blushed slightly, Emerie and Nesta shared a knowing look.
“Hi Azriel!” They shouted.
Gwyn rolled her eyes at them before standing up to continue the call off to the corner for some privacy. The remaining friends laughed quietly before settling into the booth once more.
“So, do you have any questions regarding your cards?” Emerie asked, taking a few of Gwyn’s french fries.
“You’re never gonna let this go, huh.”
“Maltidia doesn’t lie. Whether you choose to believe it or not is a different story.”
Nesta shrugged, pulling her cardigan back on feeling the cool breeze from the evening slip from the door whenever people entered or left. Her index finger wrapped itself in the thread that was loose. The cardigan was older than her, and for whatever reason when she wore it, Nesta felt a bit better no matter the situation. “How do I know I can trust it?” Nesta asked, her voice soft as her gaze remained on the thread.
“You don’t. But that’s life right? You don’t know you’re going to stick every landing when you leap in dance. But you do it anyway.”
“I do it anyway because I know how to protect myself.” Nesta glanced at Emerie.
“But you didn’t always know how to do that.” Emerie responded. She took Nesta’s free hand, squeezing it lightly.
“Love is a lot like that. Sometimes you just have to fall to know.”
Nesta rested her head on Emerie’s shoulder. “When did you get so wise?”
Emerie snorted. “When I have two dumbasses as best friends.”
The two chuckled with wide grins while Gwyn made her way back to the booth.
“Azriel is about to drop off Ester at home before getting me. Do you guys need rides at all?”
“I think we’ll be okay.” Emerie said. “I mean we are roomies after all, so you can rest assured that I can get the prima ballerina home safely, mam.” She faked saluting Gwyn.
“I’m putting all of my trust into you, madam Emerie.” Gwyn’s voice spoke with a fake elegance.
“You both are trouble.” Nesta said, trying to fight the grin off her face.
“Sure, but you love us.” Emerie teased.
“You are after all, the baby between the three of us.” Gwyn winked.
That was something that took Nesta a while to figure out. With her sisters she was the oldest, but between her two best friends, she was the youngest. The three hugged one another, wrapping their long sleeved arms around their backs.
“I’ll see you guys later! Give him a chance, Nesta!” Gwyn called out as she went to pay for her dinner at the register.
“Well, ready to go?” Emerie aske, getting up. Gwyn had already left, the trail of long red hair gone.
Nesta nodded. “Let’s get home. I have a very long week ahead of me.”
______________________________________________________
Meanwhile…
“So, why are you not telling Nesta that you know Cassian again?” Azriel asked once more as he pulled into their driveway. Gwyn peered around as the car’s engine stopped.
“She’s in bed, you know.” He said, noticing his wife’s behavior.
“When has that ever stopped her, Az?” Gwyn asked.
Their foster daughter had been the addition they needed for their family, but they soon learned that Ester could be quite sneaky and often heard too much stuff that she had no business hearing. When questioned about it, she would say she wants to follow in Azriel’s footsteps and become a detective one day.
Azriel rolled his eyes before tilting his head. “Why are you lying to Nesta?”
Gwyn’s jaw dropped. “I’m not lying! I don’t want to influence her relationship with Cassian. It should be completely natural. It’s her first big crush in so long.”
“What relationship? You just told me she hates him.”
“Azriel, keep up! She likes him! Isn’t it obvious?”
“She doesn’t even know him?” He countered.
“Isn’t he the one who proposed to her when he first met her?!” Gwyn said.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “That was not his brightest moment.”
Reaching for his hand, Gwyn rubbed small circles along the burn marks. Watching him smile softly, she leaned over and kissed him gently before pulling her mouth away.
“One of my best friends is experiencing something so new to her. I want to see her thrive again, Azriel. It’s been so long. And I texted Eris about it earlier. He said he hasn’t seen Nesta express that much emotion in so long!” She smiled at the thought of her friend. “I know Cassian can be the man that gets her out of her head. Sure he doesn’t make the wisest decisions, but Nesta doesn’t always either. I mean she practically ruined the rum cake last year when she switched out the rum for tequila.”
Azriel cringed at the memory. “How did she fuck that up again?”
Gwyn shrugged. “All liquor is the same to her. It’s the reason why she isn’t the baker in her family.
“Well, she’s your friend. So I trust that you know what you’re doing.”
“And you promise not to swindle Cassian’s relationship with Nesta?” Gwyn narrowed her eyes.
“Scouts honor.” Azriel held out his hand.
“You were never a scout.” She corrected playfully.
He hummed, pulling her close. “Perhaps…” His kissed cheek, right near her lips. “ I started to read the latest book on your kindle when you left this morning, by the way.”
Gwyn turned as red as her hair. “You did what?!”
“Who knew you were into holiday romances, Gwynth.” Azriel smirked. “It’s time to sit in the lap of High Lord Solstice.” He winked, scooping her into his lap. She laughed while Azriel adjusted the seat, the sound of the backrest slowly moving downward. Leaning over him, Gwyn’s lips practically touched Azriel’s.  “Have I been a naughty girl, Lord Solstice?”
His hand went to cup her backside. “I fear that you have, Baby. And I’ll need to punish you–”
And then someone was knocking on the car window, making Azriel and Gwyn scramble. She leaped out of his arms, trying to climb back into the passenger seat. Gwyn was pretty sure she busted her knee into the gear shift as she moved. Azriell brought the seat back up, although it took a few seconds to have it be up right again. He pulled his hair back before glaring at the person by the window.
Standing by the car, was their foster daughter, holding each of her kittens in her arms. Both of them groaned, getting out of the car.
“You know that can be a criminal offense. Indecent exposure I mean.” Ester said, looking sheepishly between them. “Shouldn’t you be asleep?” Azriel questioned her. “Shouldn’t you?” Ester asked back.
Gwyn nodded. “She does have a point. We have work.” Then she looked at Ester. “And school.” Her arms wrapped around Ester’s shoulder and Azriel’s, the three of them walking to the front door. “So let’s get inside before High Lord Solstice puts all three of us on the naughty list.”
“Last one has to empty the dishwasher–” Azriel and Ester had already taken off, however. Gwyn yelled as she went to catch up.

The Joker and the Queen - Chapter Two

Masterlist // Chapter One // Next Part AO3 // read below
Ten weeks until Winter Solstice.
Nesta groaned slightly while she stretched her hamstring, sitting on the floor of the dance studio. Cooling down from ballet class was something Nesta took very seriously after the unfortunate event when she was seven and wasn’t cooling down after her classes, which resulted in her fainting in her mother’s flower bed when she got home at one point. Of course her mother was more frazzled about the flower bed than her own daughter, but that wasn’t surprising for Josephine Archeron.
The thought of her mother made Nesta’s skin itch, scratching her leg after coming out of the stretch. Josephine lived in the heart of downtown Velaris, so Nesta and her younger sisters created a schedule where one of the three had to see their mother at least once a week. The sisters were on a rotation of who spent time with their mother, and this week happened to be Nesta’s.
Josephine Archeron was many things, but civil was hardly one of them. She had explained her disappointment about all three of her children at least once a week.
“Feyre is dating the mayor and I’m of course happy for her, but that bimbo knows next to nothing about politics. She’s going to make this city worse, trust me.”
“Elain becoming a teacher has been a fine move on her part, but her husband has been a godsend to this family. But she buries herself in her work. She should focus less on other children, and more on creating her own.”
“And you, my darling Nesta, cannot be a dancer for life. Have you found a man yet? Well of course you haven’t. Frowning causes more wrinkles, did you know? People will think we’re sisters soon, and how will you find a man then?”
Nesta sighed, getting up from the floor as she took one last big stretch before she walked to her bag. Grabbing her phone from the bag’s pocket, she read over her last several messages.
Pegging Princess: We should meet up for dinner tonight! It’s been awhile since I’ve seen y’all.
Viscountess Vagetarian: Whatcha mean? You see me every day!!
Pegging Princess: This is the groupchat!!! LEARN TO READ! YOU RUN A BOOKSTORE!
Viscountess Vagetarian: Oh shut up wench!
Pegging Princess: Hoe
Viscountess Vagetarian: Sloot
Viscountess Vagetarian: Also can you get out of the bathroom? You need to stop watching reels while you shit. I know couples develop habits from each other, but can this be an exclusive Az one please?
Nesta rolled her eyes playfully as she could imagine Gwyn yelling at Emerie at the bookshop they ran together. The three had been best friends for years ever since meeting at the local library for a romance book meet up. It had just been the three of them there, and they’ve been inseparable since.
Queefing Queen to the group chat, “3 girls 1 book”: We can meet at Devlons! We’re having auditions tonight for the solstice ballet.
Heading to the exit with her stuff, Nesta was about to walk out when the studio door opened. Eris stood on the other side, dressed in pristine white button down and forest green trousers. He smirked slightly, catching Nesta off. “Are you ready for tonight’s auditions?” He asked.
She glared at him, her arms crossing over her chest. “This is an incredibly stupid idea, Eris. Not to mention the risk we’re taking. And in case you didn’t know already, it’s an insult to ballet.”
However, Eris just waved her off. “Stop being dramatic, Nesta. I want to try something new. I mean, didn't you say recently that ballet was an exclusive style of dance that should be more open to everyone?”
Of course he would use my words against me. Classic Eris. Fucking ass–
“Well, Nesta?” Eris inclined his head as he crossed his arms, mimicking her. He had done this since they were younger, which only made her more pissed. “Yes, I did say that.” She mumbled.
“Well, we best be going to the auditorium to see these auditions. All of the tear-off tabs were taken.”
“All of them?” Nesta blinked in surprise.
“Yup! We saw some traction on social media as well, so we’re hoping to see a good turnout tonight.”
He held out his arm. “Well, you ready?”
“Not at all.” She mumbled.
“I have no problem carrying you as you kick and scream the whole way there.”
Even as Nesta glared, she knew Eris’ threat wasn’t something to take lately. He was her dance partner for years and knew he could pick her up without an ounce of a struggle. Grudgingly, Nesta looped her arm through his.
It was going to be a long night.
~*~
There were exactly five people in the auditorium.
Nesta turned to Eris, a deadpan expression crossed her face. “This is a good turnout?”
“Oh shut up, witch.” Eris said, glaring at Nesta.
Nesta hummed as the two made their way onto the stage. Practically her whole life was spent on stages, it’s where she thrived. It was more of a home than her own parent’s house. Looking out to the very few seats that were filled, Nesta’s stomach turned.
The selection did not look great.
Clearing his throat, Eris introduced himself .“Hello, everyone. I’m Eris Vanserra. The director of this year’s Winter Solstice ballet, The Lady and the Fool. As most of you have heard, we’re having open auditions this year. We’re looking for someone to play the part of the fool, so dancing isn’t a requirement. And don’t worry, we won’t be sending you to a ballet boot camp for the show.”
“Our lovely principal ballerina” Eris gestured to Nesta “has stated that ballet should be more inclusive. While the character is not one of grace that is usually with a standard dancer’s role, I wanted this year’s performance to show that anyone can enter ballet.”
The deafening silence that gathered around the five sets of hands that applauded was almost sickening. I don’t get paid enough for this shit. Eris nudged Nesta with his elbow, giving her his signature side eye.
Taking a step forward, she spoke. “I’m Nesta Archeron, a part of the Velaris Ballet Company. I will be this year’s lead female playing the role of La Capricciosa. Her character is a part of high society, but after meeting the jesters, Moondog and Bootface, she begins to rethink her place in society.”
“There are two jesters in the show, however we are only looking for one inexperienced person to play the part of Moondog. The other jester will be played by fellow ballet dancer Balthazar. He was the nutcracker in last year’s solstice ballet.” The audience remained quiet, so she kept going. “Unfortunately Balthazar was unable to make it today, but nonetheless, we should be able to make a decision on who our Moondog should be.”
Eris took a step next to Nesta, his hands resting at his hips. “I know you all might be nervous, but ballet isn’t just dancing, it’s acting too. Don’t feel the need to show off dance skills, we aren’t looking for that. We want to see the spirit of Moondog. He’s inside one of you.” Eris pointed to the seats facing them.
Nesta mentally cringed at Eris’ wording. Gods, this man needed to get laid.
“Moondog is a poor jester who doesn’t care who he’s fallen for, all he knows is that he wants her, title or not.”
Nesta swore she heard someone sniffling in the audience. She withheld a sigh, making her way with Eris two steps behind, down the steps to the table that was on the outskirts of the pit. It gave them a good view of the whole stage. Once they sat down, Nesta glanced down at her phone, noting the time was close to five o’clock.
“This is going to go by so fast, just wait and see.” Eris said quietly, geering up for the first audition. This audience member climbed up the steps to the stage, but right as they reached the final step, they ended up tripping and falling onto their face.
Kill me now. Nesta grumbled inwardly as she would rather have dinner with her mother than be there.
~*~
As the fifth person went to introduce themselves, Eris called out. “Thank you for trying out. Maybe we can slot you for the summer solstice show?”
“Does Velaris even celebrate that solstice?” The audience member asked.
Eris shrugged. “How the hell would I know? I’m not the mayor.”
As they went to speak again, Eris shooed them away. Their face flushed red as they walked off the stage, leaving the auditorium.
When the doors closed shut, Eris sighed, slumping in his seat. He glanced at Nesta. “So, did anyone stick out to you?”
“Eris, you literally said no to all of them!” She narrowed her eyes. “And I checked our social media page, you didn’t post anything about these auditions! You’re trying to typecast this character!” She slammed the booklet of the script down onto the table. “Why are we doing this?”
“Ballet is a rigorous sport, and only the best of the best can make it to where you and I stand today. But let’s face it, Nesta. Majority of the VBC comes from wealthy families like you and I. The community should be involved for this show, I mean they’re involved in every other aspect of the Carnival of Stars. Why not this?”
Nesta crossed her arms. “You hate people. So I know you’re not doing it out of the kindness of your heart or to bring holiday cheer.” Glancing back down at the booklet, Nesta tilted her head seeing the similar designs of the sea shells and waves, the very same designs she saw when Eris told her about their new performance of the year. Slowly she rose to meet Eris’ gaze, a lightbulb buzzing in her mind.
“You’re trying to outdo Tarquin.”
Almost as if his name was a spell, Eris groaned, spilling everything. “I’m not trying to outdo him. I’m just trying to give a more meaningful performance.”
“Can the two of you just make up already?” Nesta asked, a brow raised.
“We weren’t officially together actually! According to him, we were just friends.”
She rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe you’re getting away with this. How the hell did Rhysand even sign off on this?”
Something crossed Eris’ face before he shrugged. “He’s proposing to your sister. He also wants to one up, Tarquin.”
Nesta’s face fell into her hands. She knew this day would come eventually, but out of all times of the year, Rhysand wanted to propose to her baby sister on said baby sister’s birthday. Subtle is not in that man’s vocab. Rhysand and Nesta never really saw eye to eye, however over the last year they did trade some of their childhood trauma caused by their parents. In a sense it was like the trauma Olympics, and currently Nesta was in the lead.
A soft feeling flowed between her ribs, thinking of Feyre. She was happy for her, but that happiness soon faded as she would be the only unmarried one in her family. A sight for sore eyes, her mother would probably say.
Tarquin had dated her sister very briefly before she broke up with him to be with Rhysand. Then he eventually tangled up with Eris, who apparently only used him. She had spoken to the Summer Court County dancer a few times, and was always mesmerized by him so she understood why so many people were enthralled with him.
“Besides.” The redhead started. “None of these people had the” he wiggled his fingers, going back to the auditions “dazzle we’re looking for.” Eris stood up without a single care in the world written on his face, walking to stretch his legs. Glancing back down at her phone, she wanted to slam her head into the table. It wasn’t even six yet.
“Not once did you ask for my opinion during these auditions, Eris.”
“So you liked one of them then?” Eris questioned, turning around to face her.
Scrunching her nose, Nesta shook her head. “I mean, not really. But I’m not sure what we’re looking for!”
“Trust me, dear. I know exactly what I’m looking for, and no one had it.”
“What the fuck does that mean–”
A loud BANG echoed throughout the auditorium, the sound bouncing off the walls. The doors of the auditorium slammed opened. Instantly Eris and Nesta turned around to see a man standing in red flannel and jeans. He looked oddly familiar, but she didn’t know where she recognized him. Narrowing her eyes at him, Nesta noticed that beside him was…was…
Is that a damn dog?
“Are the auditions still happening for The Lady and The Fool?” The man spoke, and suddenly a gear clicked into place. Her face flushed hard but Nesta did her best to ignore the growing heat as she bit the inside of her cheek. This was the man from the last Solstice. The one who haunted her dreams most nights, especially after she stupidly thankfully lost his number.
The man walked down to their level, the dog on a red leash, panting and wagging their tail. Big brown eyes looked at her with such compassion that Nesta had to adjust herself so she sat on her hands withholding the temptation to pet the animal.
“Can I help you…?” Eris asked.
“Hi, I’m Cassian, Cassian Pine. Are the auditions still happening?”
Eris turned to Nesta. She nudged her head, in a slight shake, indicating no! They were not continuing! We're done here! Silver blue eyes glared daggers at the auburn colored irises that sparkled with a gleam that made Nesta's stomach clench.
“You’re just in time, Bassian. You can go to the stage.”
As Eris sat back down, Nesta sneered at him, her voice hushed. “What the fuck was that?!”
“I may have found what I’m looking for.”
“What! A 6’5 man who looks like a lumberjack. His last name is a type of tree??”
“Let’s just see what the Mother potentially gifted us.”
The man was now standing on stage alongside his dog. The dog sat down on the right side of him, looking up at his face. He quietly patted their head before looking at Eris and Nesta. He rolled his shoulders slightly, smiling nervously. The clicks and clacks of the dog’s nails rested against the stage’s floor making Nesta wince just slightly from the sound.
“Like I said earlier, I’m Cassian Pine. And this.” He gestured to the dog. “Is Holly, and she’ll be trying out for the part of Moondog.”
Holly barked as if following up from what Cassian said. Her reddish gold fur glowed from the stage lights high up. She looked at Eris and Nesta, tilting her head, ears perked up.
The nerves died away in Nesta, all that was left was a burning rage. A dog trying out for this? This was an insult to ballet, to art, to her livelihood. Chaos of fire and smoke rose from her eyes as she stood up from the table. “You have to be fucking kidding me.”
“Did you actually believe that? She’s a dog, not Airbud.” Cassian smirked. Holly grumbled as she looked at Cassian again. “You’re not catching branches like how tight-ends catch footballs, goofball.”
“Mr. Pine, why the hell have you brought your dog here in the first place?” Nesta demanded.
The man shrugged. He had the gull, no, the audacity to shrug.
“I was visiting a few friends and it was too late to go back to the farm.”
“Do you understand how disrespectful you're bringing an animal, who isn’t a service animal by the way, to a stage like this? She’s actively ruining the floors.” Nesta pointed to the stage, glaring.
“Oh…Why didn’t you just say something before?” Cassian asked. But right as Nesta went to argue with him, he scooped up his dog into his arms. Holly seemed entirely unphased as she just relaxed in his hold.
Eris decided then to chime in. “Are you willing to put in the work? It won’t be an easy task, you know. We’ll need you at 125% every rehearsal. As you may not have a dancing background, we’ll be working with you on what steps to do during some of the dances.” He leaned back in his chair. “The rest is improvised.”
“I am, sir. I own a Winter Solstice tree farm on the outskirts of the city, so hard work runs in my everyday life. But…” Cassian trailed off as he looked at Nesta.
Squirming in her seat from his gaze, Nesta glanced away, feeling the heat crawl back into her cheeks. Her index finger lightly tapped on top of her hand, trying to regain her statue as she waited for Cassian to continue.
“I was greatly inspired by your work last year. I’m no dancer, but Winter Solstice is my favorite holiday. This year is the thirtieth anniversary of my mother’s passing, and while I could keep doing what I’m doing now, I wanted to do something different.”
Her chest seemed slightly sore from his words, but Nesta pushed her emotions down. They were not needed right now. The feeling of negativity flooded her mind and throat, trying to claim her next words. All Nesta wanted to do was scream. Instead she looked upon Cassian, his stare meeting hers.
“Well, welcome to the show, Moondog.” Eris said.
“Are you serious?!”
“Are you fucking kidding me?!”
Cassian and Nesta said at the same time. A wide grin crawled over his lips as he adjusted Holly in his grasp. Nesta sneered up at him while he just chuckled.
“Rehearsals start in five days. We’ll email what you need and the schedule.”
“Thank you so much…” Cassian looked at Eris for an introduction.
“Eris. How rude of me to not introduce myself before.” The director grinned before turning to Nesta.
“And this is–”
“Nesta. Nesta Archeron.” Cassian answered.
Her mouth gaped as her cheeks burned hot from the embarrassment. How the fuck does he remember my name?! Cassian made his way down the steps before placing Holly on the ground. The dog shook her body as she walked at her owner’s side.
“Oh? You’re acquainted with each other?” Eris asked, his voice sinking in curiosity.
“No!”
“Somewhat.”
Eris’ grin grew sinister as Nesta’s heart threw itself against her ribcage. Cassian wore a stupid dorkish smile, glancing at her. Nesta’s lip curled up in disgust.
“Well, private practices should help with the chemistry.” Eris suggested. He grabbed his bag, quickly packing his things before he walked up to Cassian. The two men shook hands before Eris said his goodbyes.
“Can’t wait to see you again soon, Jassian.  And don’t bring the dog again.”
Before Cassian could say anything else, Nesta followed Eris out the door. She needed her sanity for the next five days, knowing it would be ripped away by that man.

Seventeen weeks prior to Carnival of Stars starting.
“Eris, what the hell are you saying?” Nesta asked, sitting in her boss’s office. Her workout had ended early as Eris had called her into his office, wanting to discuss something with her.
The red head only grinned at her unamused expression. “As I’ve said, we’re not doing The Nutcracker for this year’s Carnival of Stars.” Eris added. “It’s gotten so boring and repetitive.”
“It’s a classic. Ballet classics never get boring!” Nesta argued, glaring at Eris. Most would be too nervous to debate with Eris once he’s made up his mind, however Nesta had known the director of the ballet company since they were young, learning dances together.
“I’m not arguing that. The Nutcracker is a holiday classic but it needs to be retired, at least for this year. I’ve wanted to do something different for a while, and Rhysand is finally letting me do so.”
Nesta resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the mention of her sister’s long-term boyfriend, who also was the mayor of Velaris and therefore was a part of every decision the carnival made. How Eris managed to convince Rhysand to remove his nosey self from the ballet performance, which would always end the week-long festival, Nesta didn’t want to know.
“So what are we doing instead then?” Nesta asked, bracing for something awful to come from Eris’ mouth.
Eris grinned. “I’m so glad you asked.”
He slid a program across his desk towards Nesta. The magazine was from the Adriata Ballet Company, the edges decorated with sea shells and waves. The date was from earlier in the year when the southern city celebrated the Summer solstice. The cover was of a woman and a… What the fuck am I looking at? Nesta narrowed her eyes down at the cover before shooting her head back up, glaring at Eris.
“Eris, is that a clown?”
“Technically yes, but my version will have a court jester instead.”
Nesta peered back down at the magazine she held. The cover had a ballerina and clown dancing elegantly in a still shot. The ballerina smiled brightly as the clown wore a goofy smile. “The Lady and the Fool? Why haven’t I heard about this performance?”
“Well you know Adriata. They have so many different kinds of performances during the Summer Solstice, this one must have been drowned out by everything else going on.” He glanced at the cover. “But I was fortunate enough to have seen this. Tarquin did an amazing job directing.” Before Nesta could ask anything else, Eris sighed. “However, we have run into another issue, Nesta.”
“Dear gods, what now?”
Her boss grimaced. “I was thinking…”
Nesta sighed, bracing for whatever was about to come out of Eris’ mouth.
“I thought it would be interesting if we did have a real fool on stage. You know, have it be meta.” His auburn eyes glowed, finishing his sentence.
“A real fool? As in someone from the fair or do you mean–” Nesta’s eyes widened as she figured what he was implying, her mouth dropping in horror. “Eris! Why are you thinking of bringing an unprofessional performer to be on stage?! We’re a highly respected dance company. Not to mention, the risks this would bring?!!”
“Well, the story calls for two fools, so we’ll just have one of them be someone from the outside. I want to highlight the difference between an average person and a dancer.” Then he added as her face fell. “And let’s face it, Velaris loves an underdog story.”
“And like I said, Rhysand gave me the go-ahead. We’ll be fine.”
Twelve weeks to the Carnival of Stars
The last week of September meant that it was Cassian’s last remaining bit of sanity before it would cease from the chaos of the winter season. The man sighed as he looked out the window of his Winter Solstice tree farm. The trees were getting more beautiful by the day, and come mid November, they’ll be ready to sell.
And personally, Cassian already had the decorations up for the solstice come November 1st. There was no use in waiting until after the last Thursday of the month. And with very little neighbors, no one could bother him about the solstice lights he turned on.
Taking a sip of the peppermint flavored coffee, Cassian settled down at the kitchen table. A golden retriever with a sugar powdered face sat up from underneath the table, licking his knee through his jeans. Cassian shook his head, smiling at his companion.
“Hey, Holly girl.” His voice was hoarse from the early morning rise, when the sun was barely peeking through the forest that surrounded his quaint farm.
Holly pushed her dry nose into the palm of his hand. Another sign of her growing older by the day. Thirteen years she’s been by his side, through the thick and thin at Little Star Farm, the nickname from his childhood. The place hadn’t even been open for more than a year when Azriel and then his girlfriend (now wife), Gwyn Berdara, found a small litter of golden retriever puppies off the side of the road. Gwyn took one, Cassian took one, then the rest were given to friends and family members.
“Come on, let’s go check on the trees.” Cassian placed his mug down as he and Holly left the kitchen to the front yard where he parked his gator cart. The green on the front of the vehicle peeling and cracked. Holly made her to the passenger side. A little whine escaped her as she looked at Cassian, then to the seat, then back to Cassian.
“Just a minute, Holly.” Cassian checked to make sure his usual equipment was in the cargo box before he bent to his knees, picking Holy up with ease. “Jeez dog, I gotta stop giving you so much bacon.”
Holly just huffed at his comment as he placed her in the seat. Wrapping around, he got into the driver’s seat and took off. The cart traveled through the fields of growing trees of variety. Cassian had wanted to give customers options to what they wanted to bring home every holiday season. His farm was still on the younger side at just fourteen years old, as some trees had been planted near the beginning and hopefully by this year will be ready to sell. Others had taken less time and were ready within six to seven years.
It had taken a while for the trees to reach maturity, so in the meantime, Cassian ran a small solstice shop that was connected to his house. He sold homemade items such as wreaths and small pine ornaments. There were also some items he sold from small businesses from downtown Velaris. Amren’s Crowns Candles held some of the best natural candles with wooden wicks, perfect for the holidays. Feyre painted holiday postcards that he sold at his shop too.
The grass was freshly mowed, the familiar scent still lingering along the ground as the air flowed. Cassian’s thighs were still sore from finishing the last bit of the field yesterday. It had taken almost three days to complete mowing the fields as he had to split his time between field work, store work, and making sure to take a break. Although taking a break meant just grabbing cheese and crackers, drinking water, and then going back to what he was doing.
Eventually Cassian stopped the car near some of his oldest trees. He smiled softly at some of his biggest accomplishments since he started the farm all those years ago. Some trees were ready by seven years, but others took longer.
“What do you think, Holly? Think they’ll be ready by the holidays?”Holly barked in response as her long haired tail wagged. “Me too, Holly girl.”
Grabbing his journal, Cassian made notes of the trees in the particular area that were going to be ready for the holiday season. It was a leather bound journal that was roughly loved by the look of it. The leather was faded, the pages wrinkled with water and coffee stains. Cassian had a journal for every year on the farm. This one had seen the most damage due to a giant coffee spill from Azriel’s and Gwyn’s foster child, Ester, when the three visited last month.
Being a detective in Velaris, Azriel had a pretty work busy schedule and with raising a teenanger, Cassian didn’t see his friends often. Azriel and him inseparable growing up, but after separating from the military, Cassian wanted to work on a passion project since he was young instead going for a typical career that most take after finishing their time with the military.
Solstice brought up a lot of tough times he had as a kid, as his mother died when he was a kid, right before solstice one year. His mother did everything she possibly could to keep them afloat, living in a very tiny, dingy apartment in Windhaven, a town not too far from Velaris.
But every winter solstice, his mother made sure that Cassian had something special, and that was the solstice tree in their living space. Cassian grew fond of taking care of it. Decorating it with the few ornaments they had and some lights, it made Cassian’s year seeing the completed piece. He begged his mother if they could keep it up year long, but he quickly came to find out, at most it could make it to a week or two into the new year before the tree would die.
The farm, in a way, was a gift back to her, as some of the proceeds went to a local non-profit for survivors of domestic violence. The abuse was something that Cassian saw very little of, as his mother hid it from him as much as possible. However, it lingered in their home long after the violence faded away. Winter solstice was a time for happiness and cheer, so Cassian worked hard year around in order to bring the best trees.
Making his way back to the cart, Cassian put his journal away before he and Holly made their way back to the house. An hour or so had gone by upon Cassian’s return. He helped the golden get out of the cart before he ventured inside, warming up another cup of coffee. Holly made her way to the big old bed that Cassian bought her when she was so little. He caught her eyes immediately drifting off, the old dog falling asleep instantly.
Cassian settled into his lazy boy leather recliner when his phone buzzed. Pulling it out of his pocket, he withheld a heavy sigh that wanted to be released as he read the name across the screen.
Message from Rhys (aka pile of dicks)
The farmer rolled his eyes at the nickname that Ester must have made when Cassian was looking away. Opening the message, he took a look at what his friend had to say
Rhys (aka pile of dicks): Winter Solstice is upon us! Come downtown so we can discuss what’ll be needed this year.
It’s not even October…Cassian finally sighed, huffing and puffing.
But of course whatever the Mayor of Velaris wanted, he got.
Grabbing the coffee pot, he poured everything into a travel mug. Going back over, Cassian rubbed his hands on Holly’s belly, as she rolled over onto her back.
“Rhysie needs me, old girl. I’ll hopefully see your sisters while I’m there.” Holly sneezed in answer. “Yeah, I’ll tell them you said hi.” Holly shook her head as she sneezed again. Cassian rolled his eyes playfully. “I don’t think I need to be bragging to them how you got the best owner out of the liter.”
He pointed at her. “Don’t tell Gwyn that, she takes your brother’s livelihood very very seriously.”
Getting up, and attempting to ignore the cracks his knees made, Cassian made his way with his coffee out the door and into his truck.
Cassian to Rhys (aka pile of dicks): On my way! And since you’re pulling me away from work, I would like my usual from the Devlon’s.
~*~
Cassian’s meeting with Rhys went longer than expected. Unfortunately, Mor was also there, so the two cousins kept yapping on unrelated topics until Cassian had to draw their focus back into the reason he was there. Rhys was ready to propose to his girlfriend, Feyre Archeron, and wanted this year to be an extra special edition of the Carnival of Stars.
“Decorated trees, snow, solstice carols. Everything that the carnival has, but times it by 1,000. Only the best for Feyre Darling.”
“As a reminder, the Carnival of Stars isn’t for Feyre. It’s been a tradition in the town since your great grandfather was mayor of the city. So it can’t just be about Feyre.” Cassian said.
Rhys waved his hand. “I know that, but I think we should just go all out, you know? Make Velaris, Solstice Town for a change.”
Cassian tilted his head. “Any reason why we’re going the extra mile?”
“I want to make this winter solstice the best one yet. It’s her birthday, but she deserves the world.”
As Rhys looked upon Cassian, he shrugged. “You’ll understand when you’re in love.”
Cassian rolled his eyes as he walked down the steps from Rhysand’s office. Rhys had no idea that Cassian was in love, for almost a straight year. Every day Cassian waited for a text to appear by the one he was dying to speak too.
Nesta Archeron.
The principal ballerina of the Carnival of Stars dance company, graduated from Velaris University, and was the eldest sister to Feyre. Cassian asked her about Nesta not long after solstice, but at most the art teacher shrugged and said her sister didn’t date. “She’s married to her career, Cass. I just don’t see it working.” So Cassian may have searched for her on the internet, but it was completely harmless. There was hardly anything on her.
No social media accounts, no secret blogs, nothing. It was like she was just a figment of his imagination. Like clockwork, Cassian pulled out his phone, the nearby church bells rang at the hour. Maybe today will be the day she texts me.
There was absolutely nothing on his lock screen other than Holly in a solstice paper crown. He sighed before stuffing his phone back in his pocket. I have no time to think about this, I have to work on which trees to send out for the carnival this year.
As he made his way through the first floor to the exit, something stopped him in his tracks. Cassian couldn’t believe what he saw as he blinked several times to make sure he wasn’t seeing anything.
She was here. She was really here.
Well, it was a picture, but it was Nesta Archeron. She wore a long dress with a tiara as she stood en pointe alongside a court jester. Cassian approached the poster as the title of the ballet hung above the dancers.
The Lady and the Fool. The Carnival of Stars ending show featuring Nesta Archeron. Meet the cast throughout the week of the carnival before seeing their performance on Winter Solstice night.
Cassian glanced down at the description of the ballet.
A wealthy lady, a poor jester, and a tale of society and love.
And right next to the poster was a sheet of paper that Cassian had to double take at.
Audition Call for The Lady and the Fool. No dancing experience required! Meet in the Auditorium this Thursday.
This is stupid. Not only do I not know how to dance, I have a whole farm to run. Cassian thought as he let go of the paper before walking away. He had work to do…
Then by the grace of High Lord Solstice himself, the very angel he fell in love with last year, walked into the building. Her hair was in a bun as she carried a bag over her shoulder. A glimpse of white in her ears gave Cassian the note that she had air pods in. Then she made a turn to go down the steps, right where Cassian was. Quickly he leaned against the wall, taking out his phone. Act normal, she won't question anything.
So Cassian opened the Velaris Times Games app. He completed a few games of the day, but was still stuck on Connections. Who even comes up with these??
He kept his presence pretty quiet so he could blend in. Boots clicked against the tile floor as golden brown strands of hair caught his attention from the corner of his eye. Rolling his shoulders, Cassian kept his posture relaxed as best he could while a clean linen scent flowed on by.
His thumb shuffled through the cards on the screen. She’s probably gone by now. Taking a breath, Cassian lifted his head expecting an empty space in front of him. But what he didn’t expect was the same woman he just saw before, to be standing off to the side, looking directly at him. Cassian’s mouth dropped a little before he cleared his throat and waved at her.
This must have broken the spell. Nesta Archeron flushed before spinning around, marching off and heading to the dance studio most likely. Cassian could only watch her as she left him standing in the hallway. Glancing over at the audition call again, his stomach flipped.
Fuck it, I’m not wasting my shot.
Cassian practically tossed his phone out of sight, reaching over and ripping off the tear-off tabs of the advertisement. The small pieces of paper held the same information as the flyer. Quickly, Cassian shoved all the pieces of paper in his coat pocket before leaving the building. The ball was back in his court, and he would be damned if he missed his shot for a second time
~*~
“So let me get this straight, Cass. You’re going to audition for a ballet, all so you can impress the principal ballerina who you’ve barely even spoken to??”
“She has yet to see my skills! And I can dance well enough.” Cassian defended his stance. “Cassian, you can’t even stay on beat.” Azriel said with a deadpan look. “What’s the type of art Feyre does – oh abstract! I have some abstractness to my dancing.”
After visiting with Rhysand, Cassian made his way to Azriel’s house as it wasn’t far from City hall. His old red pickup truck was parked in front of their townhouse.
Azriel pinched the bridge of his nose. “Is it reasonable enough to ask you to stop while you’re ahead?”
Cassian opened his mouth to argue when a redhead woman walked through the threshold of the dining room, carrying coffees to the table.
“Az, give Cassian a chance. He’s in love. Let him try this.” Gwyn said as she placed coffees down on the table before sitting down, next to Azriel. She kissed him on the cheek before pouring coconut cream and sugar into her coffee, turning the dark drink into a lighter color. “Besides, you’re a love expert.” She winked at her husband who only rolled his eyes, before nudging her slightly.
For years Cassian was their third wheel to their relationship and while it didn’t bother him they were in love, there was an empty space always in his heart and next to him.
Azriel shook his head. “You're ruining the taste of coffee.” He said as he also placed the coconut cream in his coffee, but with no sugar. Gwyn gave him a knowing look. “Mhmm, sure.” The man blushed as he rubbed his neck before taking a sip. Cassian mentally rolled his eyes, but silently agreed with his best friend.
“Thank you, Gwyn.” Cassian smiled sheepishly, drinking his coffee completely untouched.
“No problem, Cass. And for the record, I think it’s romantic what you’re doing.”
“It’s romantic until the ballerina says it’s stalking.” Azriel butted into their conversation.
Gwyn pursed her lips. “Well, dark romance is still a bestseller at the shop.”
Cassian watched Azriel fight the urge to sigh before he shook his head, taking another sip. Gwyn had opened a bookshop with her best friend, Emerie, in downtown Velaris. Cassian didn’t know the first thing about a romance book as he read more historical books or books on solstice trees.
“What’s considered dark romance?” Cassian asked, peering at Gwyn. Azriel dragged his hands down his face, a miserable expression slipping through. “Oh, now you’ve done it my friend.” Azriel mumbled.
Gwyn’s eyes sparkled with a devilish delight. “I’m so glad you stopped by, Cassian!” Almost like it was pulled out of thin air, books appeared in Gwyn’s hand from a nearby stack. “Class is now in session, and before you say anything, the kid is out with her friends. No need to be PG-13 anymore!”
Cassian paled, glancing at Azriel, who just shook his head and grabbed a nearby flask before pouring most of it into his coffee. The farmer gulped. What had he gotten himself into?

The Joker and the Queen - Prologue
Here is the first part of the fic @emeriethevalkyriegirl 🩷 For @acotargiftexchange it's less than 20 minutes until Monday, so it's basically Monday now
Masterlist // Next Part AO3 // read below
Last Year, Carnival of Stars Winter Solstice Show
Twirling in white laced pointe shoes, Nesta Archeron, graced the stage with an elegant bow as the crowd applauded and cheered for her and the cast of the Nutcracker. Her golden brown was slicked back into a classic bun as her eyeshadow shimmered from the stage lights. Holding a bouquet of roses, the prima ballerina waved to everyone as her and the fellow ballerinas and danseurs left the stage.
And that was when Cassian knew he was going to marry her. His hands stung as he applauded, but he couldn’t care less about the trivial pain.
“Ballerina got your tongue?” Azriel joked. His best friend stood next to him as audience members began to make their way to the exits. However a few of the audience, including several children, ran down to a set of double doors that appeared to lead outside.
“Why are some people heading that way?”
Azriel tilted his head at where Cassian was referring too. “Oh, usually they hold a small autograph section right outside the stage. Since the cast have made their way through the carnival all week, they typically gather some fans to come see the closing show. It’s their way of thanking them.”
“I’m heading down there.”
Azriel blinked. “For what reason?”
Before Cassian started walking, he looked back at his friend.
“I’m going to introduce myself to the love of my life.”
“...She has no idea that you exist, does she?”
“Absolutely none. But Velaris wasn’t built in a day, my friend.”
Cassian waved Azriel away as he made his way down to the double doors where a small line had already formed. Although there were many children in line with their parents, some single adults stood among them. His fingers fidgeted against his thighs as the line slowly progressed through the doorway.
Running one of the few solstice tree farms close to the city had kept Cassian busy throughout the week, so he didn’t have time to visit the Carnival of Stars this year. Honestly he hadn’t been able to attend in years with the lack of flexibility to his schedule. Plus Winter Solstice didn’t feel the same way since he was younger.
Pulling at the collar of his jacket, Cassian made his way outside to find the cast speaking with children and adults alike as the dancers signed programs. The cover was icy blue with the principal ballerina and the man who played the Nutcracker in his costume as they leaped in unison.
Peering over the people in front of him, Cassian saw Nesta Archeron speak kindly to a young girl. The girl showed her a dance move or two that had Nesta applauding. The line kept moving forward as Cassian caught wind of their conversation.
“Well done, Lena. Velaris has an excellent ballet program. Talk to your parents about it.” She smiled brightly at the young girl.
“Will do, Miss Nesta!” Lena and her mother waved goodbye as they left.
Time slipped between his fingers as Cassian stood in front of the prima ballerina before he knew it. She smiled at him, but it wasn’t as soft when she was speaking to the girl before him.  Pushing his hair back, Cassian smirked just slightly and held out his hand.
“Great show, Sweetheart.”
Nesta raised an eyebrow as she kept her answer short. “Thank you.”
Grabbing a program, Nesta began to sign her name when her gray blue eyes looked up. “Who should I make this out to?”
“Cassian, your future husband.”
Appalled, Nesta raised her head, her eyes widened. Cassian winked at her, before taking the program from her hands. Their fingertips barely brushed, but Cassian couldn’t deny the electrifying pull he felt.
Peering down, Cassian made note how compared to his own, Nesta’s hands seemed so delicate with a perfect manicure. His own hands could cover hers entirely with little effort. Her cool undertone with pink pale skin contrasted his rich smoky quartz with the calluses that cleaved his palms.
His ears flushed pink as he reached into his pocket, grabbing a piece of paper before placing it in Nesta’s hands.
“Hope to hear from you soon.”

Also I just realized that your last Secret Santa had a fanart of this fanfic from last year. I swear I had no idea. But still, TWINSIES!😻😻😻
A Christmas We'll Never Forget
@acotargiftexchange
Morning giftee. Guess what, it's time for your gift! @moodymelanist I was so happy to be able to provide your gift for you and I hope you enjoy it jut as much as I love writing it. I managed to make it past 1,000 words so YEAH A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE! Anyway, it's finally time. Enjoy your gift.
“I still can’t believe you brought me to that haunted house on Christmas Eve.” Cassian playfully shivered walking alongside his mate.
Nesta and Cassian have been together for almost 3 years now. 3 years of haunted houses and Christmas presents to 3 years of birthdays and anniversaries. Nesta ever wondered if she’d ever get tired of her idiotic yet naïve mate. Yet no matter how many obstacles the two of them encounter, they always seem like crumbs in comparison to their love for one another.
And the day they met, oh Nesta could never forget. She was at a coffee shop getting her 4th cup of coffee for the day when she ran into Cassian pretending to have lost his phone. She still remembered the poor ass pick up line he said to her. It still made her giggle even to this day. From that point, the two of them had a rough start, their relationship getting a tad bit worse when Feyre had decided to hook them up on a date at Cassian’s first haunted house. Turns out combining a buff man with a 1-inch spider equaled a screaming fit disguised as a little girl’s. She still remembered how Emerie and Gwyn, her two best friends, couldn’t stop laughing at the poor brute. Nesta saved her laugh for later, letting Cassian have some of his dignity intact.
But the night was fixed with a little movie night featuring Cassian’s favorite Christmas movie. Elf. Nesta, to this day, still wondered why a Christmas movie was chosen on that Halloween season. But she knew better than to question her mate. Not that he’d ever explain himself to her about any of the silly things he’d do.
Still, it was nothing compared to the 2nd Christmas they had together. Where Cassian had chosen not 1 but 10 holiday hallmark movies to binge watch for him and Nesta. Nesta tried her hardest to hide her cringes at all of the cheesy romance she witnessed that day. Yet, her mate always made up for it by baking her favorite chocolate cake. For granted, it was that same chocolate cake that got her into her mate’s little trap in the first place. If he weren’t so hot, she’d crush him.
And now currently, the two of them had decided for this Christmas, to go to the Winter Court. Cassian mentioned a surprise at the top of a strange hill that they were getting close to. Yet, having to be woken up at 4:30 in the morning almost made Nesta regret her decisions about her chosen mate. But she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t curious. Plus, the topic of the conversation wasn’t so bad either.
“It wasn’t that bad.” Nesta replied to her timid mate, failing to hide a quirky grin. Cassian gave her a hard yet playful glare. “Not that bad?! It was 50ft tall. With 12 legs!”
“It was an inch tall. With 8. And as tiny as your brain.” Nesta slipped out that last comment, quickly covering her mouth to muffle her giggles. Cassian’s gaping jaw did not help to ease the giggles. “What’s so funny? Your mate could’ve died that day.”
“You weren’t my mate back then.”
“It doesn’t matter. I never would’ve been able to do this.” Cassian replies right before hoisting the blonde in his arms bridal style and twirling her around as if they were both spinning tops. Nesta squealed, not caring if the animals heard her. “Cassian! You’re gonna make us fall!” She says as her mate couldn’t care less about slowing down. At least not at the moment.
The two of them laughed in the forest as Cassian finally slowed down but wasn’t fast enough to avoid the branch that made him trip and fall on the snow along with Nesta. “Told you.” Nesta replied as Cassian smirked and allowed his fingers to dance on his mate’s sides. Nesta’s laughter sang in the winter forest, as her mate’s tickle torture came to a halt, replacing it with an unescapable bear hug. “Lemme go.” Nesta giggle as Cassian rolled his eyes and tilted her head up just a bit. “Never~” he whispered before sharing a passionate kiss with the woman he loved so much.
By the time they reached the top of the hill, the two of them were completely out of breath. However, it wasn’t the hike that made them sulk to the ground. More of the undeniable intercourse that rampaged in the forest the two of them had. Let’s just say that the forest had grown whiter in the 7 minutes they had together.
Nesta was allowing Cassian to fix her hair when she asked the question for the umpteenth time today. “So, why are we here again?”
“You’ll see~” Nesta can practically feel Cassian’s smirk behind her. It took everything she had to not roll her eyes. “Well tell me soon. I’m getting sleepy just sitting here.”
“Then I’ll keep waking you up with those little love bites you love so much.” Cassian replied smoothly wrapping his arms around her waist. Nesta didn’t bother to hide her annoyance, yet a smile was permanently placed on her face. Cassian leaned his head to her shoulder, kissing it passionately. “You’re gonna love it. I promise.”
“Sure.” Nesta dragged out, attempting to sound irritated. However, it only came out as a playful demeanor.
The two of them sat on top of the hill, both of them sitting in a comfortable silence; Nesta resting her head on her mate’s shoulder and Cassian bringing one hand behind her back while the other entwined with Nesta’s. After a few moments, Nesta and Cassian were greeted by a wonderful sight. Slowly, the night starry sky had begun to glow, a ray of bright red and pink splashing from the horizon. Its colors flowing beyond the stars and coating the sky in its fabulous warmth. Each of the colors bled the sky, instantly diminishing the stars that barely came close to its brightness. The dark colors of blue and purple had vanished, making way for the brightest star ever to be known. Only then did Nesta realize that she was experiencing a sunrise.
Nesta had seen a sunrise before, even in her youth. Yet at the time, it only felt as if it was the start of a new hard-working day. Yet upon looking up at this one, made her feel more at peace than any other sunrise had ever done. “Kallias said that this was the best place for a sunrise. I had to go through 12 different parts of the forest to find this spot.” Cassian explained, as he looked down towards his mate. Nesta did not turn her gaze away from the view.
Cassian smiled, admiring the twinkle in her eyes. “Everyday, I use to wake up thinking that I would never find a better home than the one I shared with Rhysand and Azriel. And yet you came into my life, and an entire wave of possibilities just flashed before my eyes that day. And no matter what happens, whenever I wake up, whenever I see that beautiful sunrise, I think of them woman who gave it to me. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Cassian waited for a response, but Nesta still didn’t say a word. He started to grow concern when a flash of shine sparked her face.
A tear.
Immediately, Cassian turned Nesta’s face to him. “Are you okay? Did you not like it? Should we go back-“ One kiss. It was all it took to shut Cassian’s mouth. One beautiful and long kiss. Nesta wrapped her arms around her mate as Cassian deepened the kiss, wrapping both arms around her waist. The big brute dipped his mate, a low angle where Nesta had almost touched the snow. Her right leg bent at the knee as if it’d save her from falling into the snow.
Only when the sun had stopped rising did the two of them break apart, Nesta’s eyes now shining with fresh tears. Yet she was not in pain. “I love you. I love you so much Cassian.” Those words left her mouth before she could take them back. And she didn’t want to.
Cassian didn’t hesitate to reply, “I love you too, Nesta.” And the two of them shared another deep and passionate kiss.

A Christmas We'll Never Forget
@acotargiftexchange

Hello Giftee!
T'was the night before the Acotar Gift Exchange Winter Solstice, and all through out the city of Velaris, the citizens lay in their beds, ready for High Lord Solstice to visit their home, with gifts from his workshop.
On the same night, a ballerina and a farmer take their final steps to rememorize the dance of a lady and a fool as the clock ticks down to their performance. A string of fates have tied them together but with tension laced between lips and glances. does love have a chance to bloom?
Find out when the fanfiction, The Joker and the Queen begins to drop...on Monday, December 16th.
Also letting you know I'm still actively working on the fic, so I'll be posting throughout the week and into next most likely. I hope you don't mind the length of time :')
Girl/Boy please take your time. I’m getting excited already! Is it weird that when you said High Lord Solstice my mind immediately went to Kallias?
Joker and the Queen….I LOVE IT 😻

Hello Gifteee <3 <3 <3
It's been a little bit, but I hope you're doing well!!! I have some final questions for you so I can sprinkle these things during my editing.
What are your favorite songs at the moment (doesn't have to be holiday music).
I've been cracking a big smile at Nessian being idiots. These two are just so funny haha! It's been so fun to write them falling in love!
Also we do have a little scene of Ester speaking with Gwyn (with the kittens)!! <3
I can only imagine what the two of them are talking about 🤣🤣🤣
Fav songs so far…hmmm…OH I like ‘Woman’ by Kesha. I’m telling you it’s the bomb. I feel like Nesta would sing that song privately while Cassian hears the whole thing and gets so turned on.
Also only 2 days left! And thank you so much for the gift in advance. I can’t wait to find out who you are.😍

Hello <3 <3 <3
I'm so glad you enjoyed your little gift! I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!! Did your mom make anything different this year on the dessert menu?
I wanted your opinion on spice level for the fic. I'm not planning on writing smut since you haven't mentioned it, but would it be okay if I write some slight steamy stuff. It would be similar to the YA level so nothing graphic.
If you're not comfortable with that though, totally fine! I wanted to ask first just in case <3
-SS
It’s fine with me. I’m not much smut cause fluff’s my fav but I don’t mind it in the fic so long as it’s not the main focus.
Also, nothing new. But still very good Thanksgiving.

Those desserts just sound so yummy! I'll make sure to sprinkle a few of them throughout the story <3
I write on both tumblr and AO3! I usually post to both <3 So for your fic I'll be doing both <3 <3 <3
I did want to give you a little heads up about your small gift. I'll be posting it sometime soon, but from a side blog connected to the gift exchange! So you'll won't be able to know who I am just yet ;D
I'll tag you in the post so you'll be able to see it <3

Ohhhh very mysterious, I like that Santa! Okay, I can’t wait!

Hello <3 <3 It's santa!
What desserts does your mom make that you love so much? Also in general what are your favorite foods to eat (does not need to be festive if you don't want it to be) espeically for lunch and dinner!?
The fic is coming along very nicely. Although I feel like we're just reaching the middle we're almost 8k in LOL. I'm probably split up the doc into chapters in the final product so it's easier to read <3 I don't have a number of chapters yet, but perhaps closeish to 10 (maybe).
Can't determine just yet, but the seeds are being planted for the drama and eventual fluff. I've also been smiling big at the fic with all of the humorous moments.
Just warning there will be a slight touch of angst, but nothing too deep. Just enough to give some drama ✨
IM LOVING IT ALREADY!
Also my mom makes pound-cake, rum-cake, strawberry cake, key lime cake, and makes them multiple times for everyone who asks so that’s a lot of work.
Favorite food would be the desserts but not just because my mom makes it. I just love cake. As a matter of fact, so does my mom. I think she ate a lot of cake when she was pregnant with me. And grapefruit, but that’s a different story.
Also, I don’t mind chapters at all. Go at your own pace. One question though: are you posting the fanfic on Tumblr or AO3? I’m just curious, I have accounts for both.

Hello giftee <3 <3
I don't have your small gift yet, but it should hopefully come on by sometime next week. It's not the fic (since those aren't due to come out until mid December hehe), but I made something small for a little anticipation <3
Anyway, I wanted to know your thoughts on the holiday season! What's your favorite part? Do you like the snow or do you hate it? Do you have a favorite song? Also can Christmas music be played before thanksgiving?
As I've been writing the story, Nesta seems to love the winter season. Big hot chocolate drinker What do you her fondest memory would be (family and or w/ her friends).
-SS
A small gift. Awwww thank you Santa❤️
Favorite part of the holidays is usually the desserts my mother makes. She always bakes during the holidays.
I love snow. The sad part is that it rarely comes. And when it does, it’s only for a day. I live in the south.
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU!!!!!!!
Ester: (says this as she blasting Mariah Carey in the background annoying the shit out of Cass and Az) YES YES YES YES!
Her fondest memories would definitely be with Gwyn and Emerie. They helped her discover that she can be more than what the people around her think of her. They helped her learn to love herself again and allowed her to grow into a woman she never thought she could be.

Thanks again for answering my questions <3 As tomorrow is your last day, why not enjoy another snippet <3
This is stupid. Not only do I not know how to dance, I have a whole farm to run. Cassian thought as he let go of the paper before walking away. He had work to do…
Then by the grace of the Mother herself, the very angel he fell in love with at last solstice walked into the building. Her hair was in a bun as she carried a bag over her shoulder. A glimpse of white gave Cassian the note that she had air pods in. Then she made a turn to go down the steps, right where Cassian was. Quickly he leaned against the wall, taking out his phone. Act normal, she won't question anything.
So Cassian opened the solitaire app, continuing his game from the other night.
This must have broken the spell as Nesta Archeron flushed before spinning around. She marched off, heading to the dance hall most likely.
Fuck it, I’m not wasting my shot.
Cassian practically tossed his phone out of sight as he went back to the audition call. He quickly ripped off all of the tear-off tabs of the advertisement. The ball was back in his court, and he would be damned if he missed his shot for a second time.
Enjoy!
-SS
Oh I didn’t see this ask. AND YES A SOMEWHAT HAMILTON REFERENCE!
And Cassian the ever idiot. But our loveable ever idiot. Nesta has her work cut out for her. I can practically hear Az and Ester snickering off screen.

Hello lovely giftee!
I understand your concern with mama archeron, but have no fear! She's involved as a plot device and nothing further. This fic won't go into the details of how Nesta's relationship w/ her mother will change or not.
And indefinitely Cassian is protecting her 1000% Her sisters and their beaus will also be there to stand with Nesta when it comes to this very dramatic dinner.
And one more thing, I'm not sure if you're into tarot cards but in the story Nesta will have her future read by a dear friend, and without giving away too much, these are three cards that represents Nesta's past, present, and future.
Past: Death (reversed) - fear of change, holding onto something
Present: The Fool (upright) - new beginnings, free spirit
Future: The Lovers (upright) - partnerships, union
I'll be sending a little treat very soon!!
-SS
Ohhhhh mysterious! I can’t wait! And no Ester, will not be too upset because she has animals.
Also, don’t know many tarot cards but I did watch “Agatha All Along” so that should be fine right?

Hello Hello!!
It's Santa! One of my elves asked me something recently, so I wanted to know your opinion. Do you like fate dating? It would be for a dinner right near the winter solstice that mama archeron is hosting, and Nesta doesn't want to feel the wrath of her mother's disappointment for not having a man, so perhaps Cassian persuades her to let him accompany her for the night, and after that he won't bother her after the ballet.
Let me know your thoughts <3
-SS
I’m very concerned with the fact that Mama Archeron is here, but as long as Cassian protects her from her bitchy attitude, I’m sure it’s fine. Ester can’t be invited though. The last time she was here she spiked Mama Archeron’s drink with laxatives. Don’t ask, about the incident. Ester has no regrets.
