OKC's Metropolitan Library System receives large donation
LaVerne Taylor loved reading books, a passion that inspired her to leave $1.4 million to the Metropolitan Library System Endowment.
Taylor died in February 2012 at 93 and was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, a retired senior vice president of Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co.
LaVerne Taylor's favorite library to visit was Belle Isle, which she typically visited every Wednesday morning and would check out as many as a dozen books at a time. She loved mysteries and James Patterson books.
“She was a very sweet person,” Belle Isle circulation clerk Regina Wolfinger said. “As she was getting older and getting frailer, we would take her books out to the car. When I helped her, I would always give her a big hug and tell her to take care of herself.”
Wolfinger said earlier in her life Taylor was an avid golfer, but as she got older, it became more difficult for her to play. Reading became one of her great passions.

WASHINGTON — With the government just weeks from running out of money to pay its bills, President Obama and prominent Republicans have started to act as if the White House has the upper hand in the current round of the battle over federal spending.
In recent days, Obama rebuffed suggestions that he consider ways to sidestep the need to raise the limit on the government's debt, reinforcing his demand for a congressional vote. On Monday, he repeated that stand in a hastily announced news conference, criticizing Republicans for threatening to "blow up the economy" and insisting that "no simpler way" exists to deal with the debt ceiling.

NEW YORK (AP) - When revelers pack Times Square for the annual New Year's eve celebration on Monday night, police will observe a tradition of their own: giving them lots of company.
Each year, the New York Police Department assigns thousands of extra patrols to festivities – in ways seen and unseen – to control the crowd and watch for any signs of trouble.
Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world are expected to pack into the bow-tie stretch of streets in Midtown Manhattan to see the crystal ball drop and ring in 2013.
"We think it's the safest place in the world on New Year's Eve," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told The Associated Press ahead of the holiday. Security in Times Square has become an obsession for the NYPD in the post-9/11 world, especially since the botched attempted car bombing there in the summer of 2010. More recently, details emerged in another case in Florida saying that one suspect considered Times Square as a potential target. Read more:

The Animal Rescue League accepted a check Friday from two boys who raised money with a hot chocolate stand.
The ARL posted a picture of the boys with a check on its Facebook page Friday. The boys raised $121.42 to help the animals.
They stopped to hand over the check on Friday. ARL is a nonprofit animal shelter that helps more than 18,000 animals each year.
