Imagine for a second:

Instead of Victoria taking Riley, she took Mike. Everything else stays the same. The final battle is about Mike choosing between Victoria and his friends (he chooses Victoria because he’s still kind of a newborn, and he doesn’t understand why his emotions are so strong). Bella is freaked out the entire time he’s missing, because he’s a friend. The whole town is on high alert. Charlie pulls a lot of late nights just trying to find any leads on the Newton boy.

It would just make the whole arc a lot more meaningful if it were a friend, as opposed to a random boy Victoria found.
