i love how mushishi can look at the same topic, like grief, but from two opposing perspectives as we go from episode to episode. the series is so versatile and has so much to say and has so much empathy for everyone.
episode 21 portrays grief as destructive when parents cling to a parasitic mushi posing as their lost child. it weaponizes their love, requiring the parents to accept their loss to avoid being consumed by grief in the way that they did.
episode 22, however, explores a society where mushi actually do enable loved ones to return as new, blank-slate versions of themselves. here, the cycle of rebirth is a pleasant thing. we can cope in different ways. resisting or adapting to life’s changes.
