“no need to thank me, it should’ve known better than to place my bag there when the place is so packed.” valerie states brushing it off as she smiles towards them. her eyes fell back towards the menu in front of her, not really knowing what she was in the mood for, she was just hungry. licking her lips, she nods. “it is! i haven’t seen it this busy in a while.” normally, val wouldn’t engage in conversation with people, she would keep to herself, however as she glances back over towards them they sort of looked uncomfortable and out of place, like someone could harm her at any moment, so she continues the conversation. “nice to meet you, jane. i’m valerie, but most people call me val. have you lived here in hawkins for a while?” she finds herself questioning, wondering if the person seated besides her could give her any sort of insight on hawkins and all the creepy stuff that happens.
x
They should their head. “It’s okay. Really.” They assured her and looked around again before back at the woman next to them. “It’s good to see.” Though, El had an idea that everyone was there to probably eat, yes, but also to come and talk about the black sludge. It was all they could think about and they wondered if everyone else was the same way. Eleven adjusted in their seat again and took a deep breath before smiling. “It’s nice to meet you too, Val.” They said. “Um... I guess my whole life? But I did live in California for a few months.” They said honestly. “What about you?” Val could’ve been a native for all they knew. Just because they never saw them before didn’t mean anything.

closed starter for @hawkinschrissy at Melvald’s
Eleven was getting some supplies from Melvald’s to have just in case. Batteries, a new flashlight, and a restock on some of the bandages they carried around just in case. They needed to restock their backpack and if El and anyone else were going to investigate this black sludge, they wanted to be prepared. However, looking over things in the store, they remembered Jonathan’s birthday was coming up and while they still had some time, they wanted to get ideas. So, they went up to Chrissy and smiled a little. “Hi. Do you have a moment to help me with something?”

duhvalerie:
it’s been a long day hard day at the floral shop and she was finally sent on her break. valerie was starving and enters the first shop she sees, which was the diner. noticing the busy diner, she assumes that everyone there had the same idea as she did going for some lunch. since most of the tables were taken, she decided to take the bar stools, placing her bag done on the empty chair next to her. pulling out her phone, she responded back to a few friends before a voice cause her to look up. a warm smile appears across her lips as she shakes her head, “oh, no. totally yours if you want it.” she states, grabbing her bag from the chair and placing it on top of the counter.
x
“Thank you.” Eleven said before sitting down once they could and took a deep breath. “It’s busy today.” They pointed out and kinda got anxious. They usually did fine in a crowd if they were around someone they knew, but sometimes they got nervous on their own like this. Like someone would spot them and someone would take them away again. And that thought was coming around again as everything else was happening in town. They put on a smile, though, as someone handed them a menu and they turned to the girl next to them. “I’m Jane, by the way. Jane Hopper.” Eleven introduced herself and hoped that talking would get their nerves to go away.

𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 — 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 / @elsjanehoppers
nancy was used to donating old things from her room to her young cousin joanna, but this haul was too much for one kid and nancy knew there were people still in hawkins more in need. she was never one to gush over material items, and half the things in her box were just not her anymore. the old nancy.
just as she was about to shove the box in the trunk of her car, nancy turned to grab her keys from her bag and noticed el walking up the drive. it was bittersweet to see, knowing how much they meant to mike and how things weren’t the same — as if there was ever a normal for any of them. ❝ el, hi. ❞
x
Eleven’s mind just wouldn’t stop going. The black sludge that was found at the farms and that it being at the scene of finding Christopher Nash’s body was constantly going through their head and they wanted to know more. They wanted to see it instead of just seeing it while watching Hopper in their mind. Part of them wanted to sneak off and go see right away and not involve their friends. They had gotten in so much and the last thing they wanted to do was bring more things to the group, but they knew that wasn’t how this all worked. They were a team and there for each other and going alone could be dangerous. So, they headed straight to the Wheeler’s house and hoping to maybe start there before possibly going to get others to go take a look if Hopper and the other cops were gone. However, walking up the drive, it wasn’t Mike they found, but Nancy and their plan already started to shift. “Hi, Nancy.” They said and noticed she had a box and looked like she was about to leave. “Are you going somewhere?”

❝ doubt he’d sell very well, too. wouldn’t be too many spider-man’s out in the streets on halloween either — which reminds me, what are you going to go as ? ❞ the topics of conversation with el always flip flopped with max. she loved spending time with them so much that she wanted to make up for lost time between that semester before they became friends in the summer, and especially when el moved with the byers to california. and the sound of a sleepover helped tremendously with that. ❝ does hopper work tonight ? my mom’s working nights so we can go to mine. might be messy if you don’t mind it. ❞
x
“I think he’d be better as an actual spider.” They shrugged and looked back at Max. Eleven was always glad that her and Max ended up becoming friends. They knew it was rocky because, well, they thought Mike had a crush on Max until they knew better and still became very unsure about her until that summer they needed advice. Even with the move, they wrote to each other and talked on the phone when they could and continued building the friendship. “I’m thinking of being Samantha in Sixteen Candles.” They answered. “What are you going as?” She wondered before shaking her head. “He is, but Joyce will be home. I don’t mind them mess, though.”

@elsjanehoppers
“i think something is wrong,” mike whispers under his breath, he had asked el to come by the arcade whenever they could and of course the time that they came they were packed with kids. he was leaning over the counter, his eyes scanning the crowd. he had tried putting the news on but some kid complained that it was boring and then he didn’t get to hear the last of any sort of development on the case of the rotting pumpkins. “did hopper say anything to you?”
x
El went to the arcade as soon as they could to see Mike and talk about what was going on. They all felt something was happening. How could they not? With everything happening lately, it was in the air that something was coming and all Eleven wanted to do was be ready for it. “I think so too.” They said as they stood by the counter and looked at him. They had thought it for a while, but they weren’t going to stay that just yet. “No. I can see it in his face, though. He lies.” She said and looked down. “I... I watched him. In here.” They raised their hand and pointed to their temple. “I watched him looking at the pumpkins. It’s not normal.”

closed starter for @duhvalerie at three squares diner
Eleven had gone to the station with Hopper that morning and was sitting in his office for a while before they decided to go out and get some lunch. Hop was gone for a call and they were alone and while Eleven tried snooping to find out more information on the farms, but couldn’t find anything. So, food it was. She told Florence where they were going so she could give the message to Hopper and out into Hawkins they went. With the diner close by, they figured they’d just go to there, but the place was kinda packed. They saw an empty stool and moved towards it before looking at the person by it. “Excuse me, is this seat taken?”

closed starter for @upsidedownism (jonathan byers) in the woods near the byers-hopper residence
The description of what was going on at the farms was sticking in Eleven’s mind. It was the black sludge. The same that was coming from Christopher Nash. They knew something was going on and it had to be something coming from the Upside Down. And with the storm not too long ago with the demobats present, they knew something was coming and they still felt so unprepared. There was a part of Eleven that wanted to go to the farms and look at it all. Investigate what was going on. However, they knew Hopper was still out there looking for himself. He hadn’t been home this afternoon and when going into the void, they saw him there and looked as much as she could before getting worried someone would come into their room. Now, though, they were alone in the house since everyone was out at work or doing something else so El figured now was good to go out and practice.
Grabbing their coat, walkie-talkie, and a bag that had some snacks and things in there, they headed out of the house and down the path they usually took to the woods. It wasn’t too far from the house but enough where she couldn’t see it and none of her family would be able to see her either. Or anyone else from around them. Eleven sat down their things and started lifting one of the falling trees when they heard a snap of stick and dropped it before turning around quickly with their hand out, ready to throw any danger that was coming up back when they saw it was just Jonathan. “Jonathan!” Their voice was surprised and they put their hand down quickly. “What... What are you doing out here? I thought you were at work.”

eddie was good at coming up with ideas - not necessarily ideas that were well placed or planned out, but he’d somehow survived this far. “oh, of course, a classic! you’re gonna go far, kid.” he said with quiet fervor at their stroke of genius. luckily, their surroundings helped them since hawkins had a myriad of large trees but now with the addition of all the structures for the festival. there were options; he just had to figure out which would work best. “well, the cart of pumpkins over there leaves your six-” stop, no code, eddie, “uh, doesn’t cover you completely, so not the best spot. there’s one of those photo booth face things? you could also hide under one of the craft tables covered with a tarp. any place you like best?”
x
A smile was on their face as they saw just how excited Eddie was. This was exactly why Eleven was doing what they were doing and knew before the first show, the two of them would figure out where to hide her so no one could see her use her powers. Their eyes followed his as Eddie pointed out the cart of pumpkins and then gave him a confused look as he stopped his sentence. They took all the places into consideration and saw an empty tall box nearby. “I think I have an idea.” Eleven walked over and got the box and brought it over to the side; turning it over and then grabbing a tarp to drape over it. They crawled inside and from a whole in the tarp they could see and they lifted something slightly to make sure it was good. “How’s this?” She asked Eddie after her test and stayed in the box; it slightly reminding her of the fort in Mike’s basement.

mike wasn’t good at showing his emotions that weren’t anger or annoyance. he knew that. when he thought that el was dead he wasn’t great to be around, and el would probably never know about any of that unless the party had told them. but mike had been miserable back then. the same type of miserable that he had been when will had went missing. it was like the only way he knew how to express himself was with anger. it was the only one that people responded. he felt like when he was a teenager he was screaming out for someone to listen to him but no one ever did unless he somehow fucked something up. he tries to push that down though, smiling at el. “yeah, they did.” it was actually nice for el to participate in stuff like this, stuff that he had loved once upon a time when his family took the wheeler kids to these things. “cool,” he says, another small smile. “let’s go,” he shoves his hands in his pockets. “is there anywhere you want to explore first? we have a lot of ground to cover.”
x
“Good. I’m glad.” They said and looked at him. They knew the risk they were taking here. All they were ever supposed to do was stay safe, keep a low profile. Never draw attention. If they did, someone could say something and someone would take them away. But for years, all Eleven ever did was do as she was told and still, someone would come to take her away or want her to use her powers. And each time, she was almost not prepared enough to defeat the thing they were fighting against. So, why should they keep hiding away? Why shouldn’t they use their powers? It was things they thought about and kept to themselves while hoping all this training would pay off when whatever was out there stopped threatening the town and finally showed itself.
“Okay.” Eleven smiled and started walking with Mike through the festivities. It was funny how once they would’ve been smiling bright and holding hands while exploring this place together; if Hopper ever had let her out back then. Now, they were hesitant with each other. Caring and love of some form was still there, but it was nothing like how it was. “I don’t know. What do you think I should see as this is my first?”

sabrina was oblivious to all things upside-down related, including jane’s powers. so, that left only one thing to blame for her getting bit: her lack of luck. with sabrina doing literally nothing in that mall and somehow managing to provoke a ‘bat’ (or whatever it was) anyway, she felt as if she was just unlucky in that situation. “ don’t be. ” the brunette-haired female shook her head, looking down at the ground for a minute before looking back up. “ uh, no, i-i don’t think so. i think i’m good for right now. ” she thought for a second. she was sure heather probably wouldn’t want her going around town with her arm all bandaged up and whatever — in her roommate’s eyes, she needed at least some sort of rest (she did lose a lot of blood). “ besides, i-i don’t wanna hold you up if you have something that you have to do. ”
x
“I am, though. I am sorry.” Eleven said again. They felt so much guilt for some many people that were effected by all this. Their friends, family, and now innocent people like Sabrina... would any of this stop? “Oh, okay. The offer always stands.” She said nervously before trying to think what else they could do to be of some help. “No, no. I don’t have anything I have to do.” It wasn’t like they had work or anything. “So, I can keep you company if you want. Or go. You probably need rest.”

upsidedownism:
el and mike were in a weird place. mike didn’t know how often to voice his concern, because in a way he had no right to be concerned. but before they dated they were friends. they trauma bonded, and whatever friendship they do have now was still special to him. even if he was incapable of showing her that. he runs his hands through his hair, a nervous habit nodding his head. “i- yeah. that’s good.” he nods his head quickly. “i just… worry, you know?” it’s the best way he can say, i still care. “the kids loved it though.” mike offers with a small smile. “so, i guess it’s a good thing,” he shrugs. “do you uh…” his voice drops a little, he’s looking around at everything else but her. “do you want to do something? together? i know you’ve never really gotten to do this kind of thing. could be fun.”
x
El smiled softly hearing that he still worried. The thought that he didn't never occurred to her. Despite them being in this weird place, they knew and worried about him too. They worried about everyone. "I know. I promise I'm careful." Besides, this was nothing like her going out to practice on her own. "Did they?" Eleven had heard the applause, but didn't get to see much reaction. Her smile grew when he asked if they wanted to do something together. They hadn’t seen any of the stuff yet and this was really their first real festival. “Yeah. I’d like to do something. With you.”

unlike dustin, el was much better company to have around the store. they didn’t cause chaos and were actually respectful around the product. their quiet and shy nature, the way they were sweet and innocent in a sense, was one of the reasons that they ended so high up on his well liked list. “i don’t mind that one bit, plus it’ll be nice to have someone to talk to while it’s quiet.” nodding slowly steve felt a sense of ease wash over him, there weren’t many people that made him feel like this so when that person came around steve kept them close. “it probably was cheaper, though i hope he bought a couple extra to surprise you when you ruin the tape by watching it so much,” there was a teasing tone to his voice as he looked at the other. “how’s home life going anyway?”
x
They smiled when Steve agreed to let her stay to keep him company for a bit. "Do you need help with anything? I can put movies back for you." They offered up as they leaned against the counter. "You can ruin a tape?" They didn't know that and was glad they didn't end up ruining the one for the store. El would've felt bad otherwise. "It's good. Jonathan sold some things at a garage sale and they still didn't get a new camera yet. I hated seeing some things go." And having to hear that the objects were just things. Some were important and had memories. "I wish I could help more. Maybe get a job, but Hopper worries." Worries that they'll accidentally use their powers and get caught, which is why she couldn't say anything about her going out to practice during the week. "How's... home for you?" They wanted to know how more than home was going for Steve, but was blanking on the words.

it’s not that sabrina was ungrateful, because she wasn’t. it was the fact that she was getting anything at all — she wasn’t expecting it, especially since she’s no longer in the hospital. could you blame her for being shocked? “ oh, that’s good. ” sabrina nodded her head, looking down at the flowers. she sniffed them, a small smile forming on her face. “ these are beautiful, jane. thank you. ” she nodded towards the other as she lowered them a little bit. she did take notice of the other’s choice of words but didn’t acknowledge it, simply deciding to answer the question instead. “ i guess. ” she looked down at the arm that suffered. “ i mean, i-it would be my poor luck for me to get bit. and then i found out from nancy that almost everyone knows about it, which just… adds to it. but i gotta let that run it’s course. ”
x
A smile crossed El’s face when Sabrina smelled the flowers and said that the flowers were beautiful. “You’re welcome.” They said before their face fell a little as they talked and looked at the other’s arm as well before back up at Sabrina’s face. They hated that she seemed to blame her luck for it all when really it was El’s fault. “I’m sorry.” She apologized for everything, even though she couldn’t exactly say the specifics towards her apology. There was so much El wanted to do to make up for this and they didn’t know how to do it. Was there something that could make up for this? Would Sabrina want them to if they knew El’s part in all the things that happened in Hawkins? “Do you need anything? Or need help with anything?”

jonathan had lived most of his life taking care of himself, because their mom was always taking care of will, they had found a pattern that had worked for them. asking for money was something that he never ever did, but masking it for a garage sale was the best that they could without it being obvious that jonathan needed the money. “i’m not gonna ask our parents for money, el,” they wanted to do everything for themselves. they couldn’t imagine asking money from their parents who already had to pay for so much. “the world just doesn’t work like that,” his voice was small when he said it. “el, it’s fine,” they tried to promise, it was just things. “it’ll be okay. we need the money.”
x
El could understand where Jonathan was coming from. They didn’t ask for much themselves, but if they came up with a plan, maybe they could help Jonathan get a new camera. Their face fell more than it already was when their brother said the world didn’t work like that. It was small things about what people considered “normal” living that sometimes made them confused and question things, but moments like this made them think of how different they were from the rest of the people they knew. “You need the money.” They reached into their pocket and pulled out what cash they did have. “I want to buy this album for my brother.”

steve couldn’t help but grin as the movie was brought to him, it was no surprise to see their name attached to it so often. it was no lie that the other grew fond of it, and deep down? steve was glad jane was able to find some joy in life as the past few years hadn’t been kind to them. it wasn’t fair. life wasn’t fair to any of them. “i’m doing alright, bit bored. there hasn’t been too many people coming in today,” pausing he leaned against the counter and sighed, “i’m actually surprised you’re returning this.”
x
“I could keep you company.” They offered to him. It had been a while since they had spent time together and rarely one on one like this. Usually the party was there too or Robin, Nancy, Jonathan... the list went on. And El had always really liked Steve. He kept their friends safe and tried to protect them from the things from the Upside Down. Their eyes moved down to look at the video still in their hand before moving and putting it on the counter. “Hop bought it for me. He said it was finally cheaper to do than renting it so often so I rode with him when he went to work and came to drop it off.”

mike had been running around most of the day with the party, but when he had heard that eddie was going to do a magic show his interest was peaked, and he found himself standing in the back watching and realizing that somethings looked a little too familiar and he hadn’t seen el in a minute and when the show ended he had rushed to the back and now upon seeing el wiping their nose he raises an eyebrow and looks at her. he knows all too well that el is capable of protecting her, hell all the times mike had tried to protect her had been unsuccessful but there was still that feeling that she could get caught and then the bad men come and take her away again. “you missed a little,” he says, pointing to it with his own nose. “i know that it’s annoying whenever i bring up your safety but el…”
x
They quickly moved their hand to wipe away the rest of the blood, turning away as they did before their eyes went back up to look at Mike. “Thanks.” El said and looked down when he started with his concern. “Mike, it’s fine.” She took a step closer to him and smiled a little. “I’m okay. We made sure no one could see me help and people think there’s a line or something.” It was hard to decipher what people were saying, but no one had actually suspected Eddie was actually doing this (except the kids) or that someone else with abilities was hiding behind something. It was safe, they made sure, and it wasn’t hurting anyone. “No one’s seen me.” Except him, but that’s it.
