this is why i think it's so enriching to experience the game. this is written into the DNA of the gameplay -- the world, as you explore it, shows you story after story of people who did exactly this. tried, and failed. the details of the ruined landscapes and houses you pick through (think the university in part i, the pharmacist in the mall in left behind, etc) reward you, in a way, for looking for pieces of the world as it was, for caring enough to explore and pay attention. the pick-ups are heartbreaking and detailed additions to the story arc that tell you -- and, i think, inform the way ellie/joel/abby, later handle what the find. it tells you a lot about them. it's one of my favorite things about the last of us as a video game franchise! so, highly recommend people watch playthroughs/play it themselves if they're able and curious about this part of the worldbuilding.
some of the most heartbreaking parts of the entire game can be found in the environmental storytelling.
I donât think we truly acknowledge how terrifying the first few years of the outbreak would have been, like aside from the fear of infection.
Like we see and know the characters 20 years in. Where people have learned and adapted to survive, are now safe in sheltered zones etc.
But before all that? The walls around QZs wouldâve taken years to build. Safe zones wouldâve been established but I donât think they wouldâve actually been safe without serious boundaries like the walls. Then even aside from that. Imagine how many people wouldâve died from things like starvation, dehydration, exposure. Literally watching your supplies dwindle down because no oneâs working in factories anymore, no oneâs popping off to their job in Tescoâs yk.
Or the people who died needlessly as people got more desperate, killing others to take their food because they had none left themselves.
People on vital medications that were no longer accessible? People with disability issues that couldnât run? Couldnât defend themselves?
This whole word is just so unbelievably sad even just a scratch below the surface of the canon story were given. And itâs so interesting to think about
