Trump says he’ll ‘suspend immigration’ into the U.S.

President Donald Trump on Monday night said that he was suspending immigration into the U.S. because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!“ Trump posted on Twitter.

The announcement stood in contrast to Trump's recent messages of cautious optimism about the country soon reemerging from weeks of lockdowns designed to contain the virus. The president has repeatedly tried to downplay the severity of the outbreak since its arrival in the country, and his push to reopen the economy has put him at odds with some of the nation‘s governors and, at times, his top health experts.

Trump did not hint at making any drastic immigration moves during his lengthy daily coronavirus news briefing earlier Monday evening. Immigration has largely taken a back seat during the pandemic as the president hopes to salvage a strong economy that had become one of his major campaign points in the lead-up to the November election.

Trump has previously boasted that closing the borders to foreigners traveling from China demonstrated his administration‘s serious and early response to the threat from the coronavirus. International travel has come to a virtual standstill as countries across the globe have imposed travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the disease.

Trump’s tweet did not make clear what specific action he would take: He could simply suspend entries for a period of time, or cancel a specific program altogether for the year.

The Department of Homeland Security is still drafting the executive order, according to three people familiar with the situation. One possibility that has been discussed is an exemption for temporary guest workers, including those who work on farms.

When asked what promoted the decision, a top DHS official responded: “22 million unemployed Americans and counting due to Covid-19.”

Since the pandemic began, the administration had already restricted foreign visitors from China, Europe, Canada and Mexico, and had paused processing for immigrants trying to come into the U.S. on non-worker visas because of office closures. That means the impact would probably address only immigrants coming here to work.

Trump has faced calls from conservatives to stop allowing foreign workers to enter the U.S. because millions of Americans are out of work after shutdowns to stop the spread of the virus. But for weeks, his administration allowed them to enter.

Advertisemen Specifically, the U.S. eased requirements for immigrants to get certain jobs, such as farmworkers, landscapers and crab pickers, aware that certain industries, including those that fill grocery store shelves, could be hurt if they couldn’t hire foreign employees. It has also begun easing the process for companies looking to hire foreign workers, altering some paperwork requirements, including allowing electronic signatures and waiving the physical inspection of documents.

In early April, the administration backtracked on a plan to pause the approval of 35,000 more seasonal worker visas, pending further review.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is running for a Senate seat in Alabama, pushed for a complete moratorium on immigration to the U.S. on Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News last week.

Carlson has been in close contact with Trump during the course of this virus and was one of the primary outside allies pushing him to do the China travel ban back in early January.

Immediately after the president’s tweet on Monday night, hard-line immigration groups cheered the decision.

My opinion: I am happy that he said that. I think that in this time people need each other and their family. Its regrettable that after the corona crisis he wil continue sendig immigrants to their country.

Coronavirus: l'Union des villes et communes wallonnes appelle le Fédéral à distribuer des masques gratuitement la politique intérieure

ou plusieurs productions nationales de masques et d'en assurer une distribution gratuite pour l'ensemble des citoyens belges, a-t-elle indiqué mardi.

"Les villes et communes seront présentes à vos côtés pour contribuer à leur distribution, en seconde ligne, vers le public fragilisé; la première ligne de distribution pouvant être assurée par BPost, par exemple", écrit l'UVCW.

"Si plusieurs villes et communes prennent actuellement l'initiative de rechercher des masques, nous croyons cependant qu'il s'agit là du rôle de l'Etat fédéral qui ne peut laisser les pouvoirs locaux endosser l'une de ses missions essentielles: la relance de l'activité en Belgique dans des conditions sanitaires suffisantes", ajoute l'Union à l'adresse de Sophie Wilmès.

Les initiatives communales en matière de masques se multiplient ces dernières semaines en vue d'un déconfinement prochain au cours duquel le port du masques pourrait se généraliser.

mon opinion; Je pense que le gouvernement a vu cela venir il ya longtemps et qu’ils devraient faire les choses beaucoup plus tôt. ils ont dû avoir des masques buccales et d’autres choses pendant une longue période. ils doivent distribuer ces masques non seulement en wallonie, mais aussi en Flandre. Le gouvernement a dit que nous étions très attendus, mais ce n’est pas vrai.

Coronavirus : comment éviter de se faire contaminer... par les fake news

En cette période d'épidémie, les infox sont partagées en masse sur les réseaux sociaux et prodiguent de très mauvais conseils santé. Comment s'immuniser contre les fake news ?

Par mail ou via WhatsApp, vous avez sans doute déjà reçu l'une des nombreuses fake news qui circulent au sujet du coronavirus. Faux conseils médicaux, annonces de décès de personnel soignant, blocage par les militaires : tout est bon pour alimenter l'inquiétude de la population, d'autant que ces infox peuvent sembler crédibles au premier coup d'œil.

Comment repérer ces fakes news ?

La première chose qui met la puce à l'oreille, c'est la manière dont l'information est partagée. Dans la grande majorité des cas, les infox se propagent de manière virale par le bouche-à-oreille numérique. Comprenez ici que vous avez plus de chance de les recevoir dans votre boîte mail, sur Facebook ou sur WhatsApp. Ce sont vos collègues ou vos proches qui vont partager l'information et cette dernière est rarement issue d'un média classique.

L'autre caractéristique des fake news est que ces dernières semblent provenir d'une source crédible. Il s'agit « d'un médecin travaillant au CHU », ou « d'un groupe de recherche qui travaille sur un vaccin ». Il s'agit en fait d'un « argument d'autorité » qui permet de donner plus de poids à l'information.

Enfin, la dernière caractéristique d'une fake news est son aspect « copié-collé ». Il est possible de tomber sur les mêmes phrases d'une infox à l'autre. Ainsi, l'une des fausses informations les plus partagées concerne le moyens de lutter contre le coronavirus avec de l'eau chaude notamment (spoiler alerte, c'est faux). On tombe alors sur des phrases qui se ressemblent comme « l'infection par le virus ne provoque pas un rhume avec écoulement nasal ou une toux grasse, mais une toux sèche » ou bien « l'infection au coronavirus ne provoque pas un rhume avec un nez mouillé ou une toux avec un rhume, mais une toux sèche et rude ».

Mon opinion: Je pense qu'il est très important de savoir ce qu'est une fausse nouvelle et ce qu'elle n'est pas. Quand il y a un virus, il y a aussi beaucoup de chaos. C'est pourquoi il est très important de savoir ce qui n'est pas vrai. Pour qu'il n'y ait pas de chaos inutile.

Alien world could be a home for life, scientists say.

A planet twice the size of Earth may be habitable, say scientists, opening up new possibilities in the search for alien life.

The exoplanet K2-18b might have liquid water underneath the hydrogen-rich atmosphere on its surface. Researchers looked at the mass, radius and atmospheric data of the distant exoplanet and used models to find the water.

K2-18b is 124 lightyears away, relatively close by in terms of exoplanets. It is also quite similar to Earth: with a radius 2.6 times as big as our planet’s and a mass 8.6 times as big.The research suggests that life could flourish on worlds bigger than Earth but smaller than Neptune, just like K2-18b

I have chosen this article because the universe really inspires me. I love to know things about the universe. I think it would be a great idea to start human life on a new planet because we are destroying earth or other reasons why human life could end. A backup plan would be a good idee. It’s important to have ideas for the future.

Tanzanie: au moins 20 morts dans une bousculade pendant un rassemblement religieux

Au moins 20 personnes sont mortes piétinées samedi dans une bousculade pendant un service religieux évangélique dans un stade en plein air dans le nord de la Tanzanie, où de nombreux évangélistes promettant "miracles" et "prospérité" ont fait leur apparition ces dernières années. 

Le bilan des victimes pourrait encore s'alourdir, a souligné un responsable gouvernemental tanzanien, Kippi Warioba, qui est également commissaire de district de la ville de Moshi située au pied du Kilimandjaro, où le drame s'est produit. La bousculade a eu lieu au moment où un prédicateur populaire a versé de "l'huile sainte" sur le sol. Les fidèles se sont ensuite précipités pour la toucher dans l'espoir d'être guéris de leur maladie, ont déclaré des témoins.

 "Jusqu'à présent, nous avons dénombré 20 morts mais le nombre pourrait augmenter car il y a eu des blessés", a déclaré à l'AFP Kippi Wariobia. Au moins 16 personnes figurent parmi les blessés, a-t-il précisé. La foule assistait à une cérémonie de prières dirigée par Boniface Mwamposa, qui se surnomme "l'apôtre" et dirige un mouvement évangéliste appelé "Lève-toi et brille Tanzanie".

Mon opinion: Je ne pense vraiment pas que ce soit possible. Ce n'est pas normal qu'une telle chose se produise lors d'une cérémonie... Les croyants, en particulier, doivent prendre soins des autres et ne pas se piétiner. La foi, c'est l'amour pour les autres. C'est pourquoi j'ai choisi cet article, Pour qu'il soit clair qu'une telle chose ne peut pas.

“Creepy” Drake (33) stuurt Billie Eilish (17) lieve berichtjes

Billie Eilish (17) heeft in een interview met Vanity Fair verteld dat Drake (33) haar regelmatig lieve berichtjes stuurt. Eilish zelf ziet er geen graten in, maar haar fans vinden het creepy.

“Drake is de liefste gast waar ik ooit mee gesproken heb”, vertelt Eilish in het interview. “Ik heb hem alleen nog maar via berichtjes gesproken, maar hij is zó vriendelijk. En dat hoeft hij helemaal niet te zijn, begrijp je wat ik bedoel? Hij is op een plaats in zijn leven, waarin hij niet vriendelijk hoeft te zijn, snap je?”

De 17-jarige popsensatie is dus helemaal weg van de 33-jarige streamingkampioen, maar haar fans hebben vraagtekens over de berichtjes. Ze uiten hun bezorgdheid op sociale media.

Ik vind het persoonlijk een beetje raar dat Drake die 33 jaar oud is, een meisje van 17 jaar stuurt. Drake staat wel bekend voor een man die van de meisjes houdt. Hij gaat vaak naar clubs waar er veel jonge meisjes zijn en danst met hun. Langs de andere kant vind ik het ook wel leuk voor haar dat 1 van de beroemdste rappers ter wereld haar stuurt. Ze kijkt op naar hem ook omdat ze zelf een rapper is.

Bella Hadid wil de uitstoot van haar vele vliegreizen tegengaan: “Ik ga 600 bomen planten”

Bella Hadid (23) vliegt als model de hele wereld rond, maar baalt er behoorlijk van dat haar werk zo’n grote impact heeft op het milieu. Daarom heeft ze besloten honderden bomen te laten planten om haar ecologische voetafdruk iets te verkleinen. Dat deelt ze mee op haar Instagrampagina.

“Ik doneer 600 bomen om te planten, twintig voor iedere vlucht die ik de afgelopen drie maanden heb gemaakt en waarmee ik waarschijnlijk de rest van het jaar zal doorgaan”, schrijft de 23-jarige Bella op Instagram. “Het maakt me verdrietig hoeveel mijn baan het klimaat negatief beïnvloedt en welk vreselijk effect klimaatverandering heeft op de wereld. Moeder Natuur heeft wat liefde nodig.”

Ik heb dit artikel gekozen omdat het model Bella Hadid een grote inspiratie is voor mij. Ik volg haar op Instagram en kijk erg op naar haar. Ik vind het echt goed dat ze dit doet want de meeste bekende mensen kijken niet eens naar hoe groot hun ecologische voetafdruk is en reizen maar heel de wereld rond. Voor mij heeft de klimaatopwarming een grote invloed op mij omdar ik er vaak bezig mee ben. Daarom vind ik het ook belangrijk dat de “hogere” mensen die een duidelijk verschil kunnen maken zeker iets doen voor het te laat is.

Baby die ondervoed raakte door strikt veganistisch dieet, lijdt nu aan obesitas.

Een Australische kleuter die door een strikt veganistisch dieet ernstig ondervoed raakte, lijdt nu aan obesitas. Dat heeft haar verzorger bekend gemaakt.

De ouders van het meisje onderwierpen hun dochter aan een strikt veganistisch dieet tijdens de eerste negentien maanden van haar leven. Haar eetpatroon bestond uit niet veel meer dan havermout, rijstmelk, tofu en aardappelen. 

De gevolgen van het tekort aan basisvoedingsmiddelen tijdens de eerste levensmaanden laten zich nog altijd voelen. Het meisje is nu drie en kampt met een botaandoening als het gevolg van een tekort aan vitamine D. 

Mijn mening hierover is dat ik dit echt niet oké vind. Ouders mogen hun gedrag niet toepassen op hun kinderen want dat is niet altijd goed voor hun. Ze moeten een kind normaal opvoeden vind ik zonder hun lifestyle. Ik vind het al erg genoeg dat ze de levensstijl van hun kind aanpassen naar hun behoeftes laat staan dat dat kind nog eens moet lijden onder een aandoening of ziekte. Dit is niet de eerste keer dat zoiets gebeurd, het is al veel vaker in Amerika gebeurd. Ik begrijp niet dat ouders voor zo een reden hun eigen kind in gevaar brengen.

Ban Ki-Moon: “Landen die wapens sturen naar Syrië vergroten ellende”.

Secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, Ban Ki-moon, beschuldigt landen die wapens sturen naar Syrië ervan de “ellende” in het land te vergroten. “Het gevaar is dat daardoor de strijd alleen maar heviger wordt en dat het geweld zich verspreidt”, aldus de VN-chef in een toespraak tot de Algemene Vergadering van de VN in New York.

Ik vind dat Ban Ki-moon gelijk heeft. Amerika en vooral Rusland, denken alleen maar aan het geld dat ze krijgen voor de wapenhandel. Zolang ze maar geld krijgen, zijn ze gelukkig. De oorlogen en moorden maken hun niets uit. Rusland geeft veel wapens aan Syrië, daarom dat het er zo bloederig is. Zolang ze wapens blijven verhandelen, zullen de conflicten bloederig blijven en waarschijnlijk nog erger. Ik vind het heel belangrijk dat er ooit vrede zal zijn in heel de wereld.

Acht transmigranten uit koelcontainer gehaald in transportzone Zeebrugge.

Binnenlandse politiek

In de transportzone rond Zeebrugge, vlak buiten de haven, zijn donderdagmiddag acht transmigranten uit een koeltransport gehaald. Dat bevestigt het Brugs parket. “De koeling van het transport was in werking, en diende ervoor te zorgen dat de lading permanent op een temperatuur tussen 0 en 6 graden bleef”, zegt procureur Frank Demeester. 

Mijn mening hierover is dat elke persoon die aan mensenhandel meedoet, dood mag. Mensenhandelaars vragen zeer veel geld aan mensen die hopeloos zijn. Ze vragen rond de 30 000 euro per persoon maar meestal gaat die reis niet vlekkeloos. De mensenhandelaars laten de mensen in camionetten, koelcontainers,... meestal zomaar achter. Ze laten de mensen aan hun eigen lot over. Het maakt mensenhandelaars niets uit van hun levens zolang ze maar hun geld krijgen.

Reilly (14) redt al gamend leven van tegenspeler.

Kunst en cultuur

Mijn thema is cultuur. Ik heb dit artikel gekozen omdat we in een samenleving leven waar tegenwoordig bijna alles digitaal gebeurd. Een 14-jarige jongen genaamd Reilly Howard uit de Amerikaanse stad East Hampton voorkomt dat zijn tegenspeler zelfmoord pleegt. Reilly kwam al gamend in contact met een 13-jarige die hulp nodig had. De twee beginnen een gesprek waar de jongen zei dat hij zichzelf om het leven wou brengen. Na een gesprek van 2 uur raadt Reilly hem aan de zelfmoordlijn te bellen en dat doet hij ook. Hij heeft zijn leven gered. Zo kan je zien dat het internet zeker ook zijn voordelen heeft. Wanneer je denkt dat je niemand meer hebt in het echte leven zal er waarschijnlijk iemand online er wel zijn voor jou en dat vind ik heel positief.

Me

Ik ben Ellen Van Steenberge, ik ben 17 jaar en ik woon in Aaigem (Erpe-Mere). Ik woon alleen met mijn ouders maar ik heb ook nog 1 zus Dorien, zij woont al samen met haar vriendje in Gent, ze is 27 jaar. Mijn mama is 53 jaar en werkt in de KBC-bank in Brussel en mijn papa is 57 jaar en heeft zijn eigen bedrijf i.v.m. publiciteit en standenbouw. Ik heb vroeger 2 jaar volleybal gespeeld maar ik ben al 5 jaar gestopt. Momenteel heb ik geen hobby’s maar ik shop heel graag online, maar ook in de winkels natuurlijk. In de grote vakantie heb ik even in de horeca gewerkt, maar niet voor lang. Het meeste van mijn tijd ben ik bij mijn vriendinnen, vooral bij Jana en Dilyana of bij mijn vriendje Vincent. Ik en Vincent zijn nu al 1 jaar samen. Hij is 3 jaar ouder dan mij en gaat al naar de hoge school waar hij de studierichting marketing volgt.
