Initial Publication Mock-Up
I created my first quick draft of my publication in InDesign to see what the layout would look like digitally. To continue this, I am going to find the right text, as well as alter my timeline layout and other layouts to have balance and unity.
(text has been substituted until I chose the right article/ sources/ quotes)

Bespoke Publication Design Ex 3
JAZZ - Prachi Shethji
This design involved entirely black backgrounds with colourful instrument graphics to make them pop. The text is mostly white with hints of colour with sans serif type for body text and decorative typefaces for headings being used.

Bespoke Publication Design Ex 2
Royal Botanic Gardens Annual Report - Jordan Taylor
This design uses warm toned colours - mostly reds with some orange and yellow - throughout the entire publication. Sans serif typefaces have mostly been used and the imagery has all been changed to warm tones to fit in with the design. Spreads are well balanced with negative space, text and image.

Type Research
Zoe commonly uses sans serif fonts and typefaces in her designs, with some subtle use of serif fonts as headers or image captions. These sans serif fonts create a clean, modern look in her designs. Helvetica was used to create her Helvetica brooch design also. In the designs above, Zoe has utilised mostly black type, with some white and red type also. In my designs I would like to use mostly sans serif type and potentially a serif typeface for headings or the front cover.

Colour Research
Zoe’s design work commonly features a minimalistic colour scheme with black and white as strong contrasting bases and often times one or multiple other feature colours. Red is a common colour used in many of her works; it is a colour that is known to attract attention and evoke strong feelings of passion, love and anger. The photographs she uses are a mix between grayscale and colour. For my publication on Zoe, I am going to explore working with black, white, red and gold (as seen in NZ Opera Identity above) as well as grayscale photographs.

Bespoke Publication Design Ex 1
Cinema - Noah Holcomb
This design features a consistent colour palette and strong utilisation of double page spreads. Images and text flow across both pages in many of the spreads. White and black are the main type colours and the photography is grayscale. Noah has used decorative and serif fonts. He has also balanced the spreads out well.

Week 9 Typographical Roulette Challenge
If I were to continue this double page spread:
- Add Colophon
- Add Dingbats font
- Experiment with yellow colour on the spread and paragraphing the text

What goes into bespoke publication design?
- Defined purpose and target audience
- Use of large headings, medium subheadings and small body text
- A range of relevant and consistent imagery/ photographys, design assets, drawings, quotes
- Photograph of the designer (Zoe Ikin)
- Consistent colour scheme throughout
- Good use of negative space and balance to guide the eye
- Use of the same fonts or typefaces (e.g. 2 or 3 maximum)
- Similar assets (repetition of panels, lines, features that help it to flow and look like a cohesive set of work without making it too similar)
