TC Post #5
Option G: Why I Left Facebook
Here are the four issues that Nick identifies as his reasons for leaving Facebook: 1. Filter Bubble- The post that are seen on your timeline are not organized by their date. You see what Facebook’s algorithms think you want to see. This is an issue because the algorithms don’t have your best interest in mind and you are never shown things that you disagree with (limits your mindset, info determinism). 2. Recycled Likes- For example, if you like a post about being against McDonalds, Facebook then assumes that you like McDonalds and it may show up on other people’s feeds. It also works the other way around. If you like a page, it assumes you like everything that page posts. 3. Sponsor Stories- Companies can use your posts as ads without asking for you permission or giving you a cut. 4. Experiments- Facebook data scientists experiment on the masses without permission. They showed certain groups positive posts and certain groups negative posts for a week and each group’s emotions ended up corresponding to the posts they saw (Facebook learned that they can control the emotions of their users). Nick really enjoyed Facebook. He had many photos, sentimental posts, and connected with many friends. His decision to leave was based off of Facebook crossing the line of what he felt was acceptable and he is sad about that. Nick mentions a search engine Duck Duck Go that can be used as a replacement for Google because Google also shows you results that their algorithms think you will like. I will definitely use this in the future to get authentic results and avoid bias. I have been on Facebook since middle school as a way to connect with friends and share photos. I have not actually posted on Facebook in a few years, as I have transitioned to Instagram and Twitter. I have noticed these algorithms that Nick mentions especially with ads. Once, I googled something on my phone and within a few hours it showed up as an ad on Facebook on my computer. I am considering completely deleting Facebook because I don’t use it and I don’t agree with the way they relate to and treat their users.

TC POST #4 Option B: New Tech
A new technology I find exciting that is on the rise is autonomous, or self-driving, cars. If we reach a point where autonomous cars are widely used in society, there will be many benefits. As someone who has been in several car accidents, caused by other people not paying attention, the idea that self-driving cars will make traffic safer is thrilling for me. According to a study by the Eno Centre for Transportation, if 90% of cars on American roads were autonomous, the number of accidents would fall from 6 million a year to 1.3 million. In addition to making roads safer, autonomous cars would make driving much more efficient, reducing carbon emissions by as much as 300 million tons per year. Self-driving cars would also allow for individuals to be more productive with their time in a car instead of having to pay attention to driving.

A recent technology that has scary potential consequences is microchips, or RFID chips. They are about the size of a grain of rice and are typically implanted into the hand. They can be used in place of keys, a wallet, business cards, public transportation cards, etc. because they carry data that can be transmitted to various receptors. RFID chips scare me because they are a gateway for all different kinds of technology to also be implanted into our bodies. There are new companies working on brain implants that could merge the human mind with the internet. Implants could cause physical harm through need of constant updating or maintenance. They could also be used as control or spy mechanisms by the government and advertisement or insurance companies. The amount of privacy we have already lost from cell phones would be taken to a whole new level.

Ed Osborne Lecture
Describe how Ed Osborn uses sound as an “art material” rather than a “musical material.”
Ed Osborn uses sound as art material rather than musical material. His work is fundamentally original, whereas music usually follows a format. Also, during the lecture he emphasized that most of his sound work is set up to loop or record what it heard to create new sounds. This act of continuous creation, to me, is art. The sounds he creates sets up an environment that relates to the physical space, whereas music is not intended to create a multisensory environment.
We go into a gallery space expecting to engage in an act of looking. Because of this, do you think Osborn is making sound visual? If so, what are some of the ways in which he accomplishes this?
I do think Osborn is making sound visual in response to gallery spaces being visual. The installation spaces he creates are a perfect vessel for his sound art and provide his audience with more to experience. It is also intriguing to think that some of his pieces, such as Night-Sea Music, start with the intention of sound but result in the creation of a beautiful visual piece (even the gradual marks on the walls from the tubing). Osborn makes sound visual by making the viewer visually pay attention to where the sound is coming from or how different sounds are interacting within the space.
Does Osborn’s sound define or activate space? How?
Osborn’s sound definitely activates space. A perfect example of this is his work Vanishing Point. The sound coming from the speakers on the windows turns the building into a body of sound. He pays close attention to the space in which he is creating sound and uses the whole environment in his art.

This installation in::Sequence by Cuppetelli and Mendoza was featured at Dlectricity in September 2017. In::Sequence was a chandelier-esque work of art where large, sheer pieces of fabric were draped down from a white circular structure. The work was constantly in motion due to the soft blowing wind. Soothing blue and yellow lights were projected onto the fabric. There was a soundtrack playing that sounded like something you would hear in a yoga class. In::Sequence could be viewed from 360 degrees around and even from underneath--there were grey carpet squares below the fabric where people laid on their backs and looked up, admiring the piece.
In::Sequence was an innovative, beautiful work of art that created an environment of community and contemplation. Laying on plush carpet, looking up at drifting, silky, glowing waves of fabric, while listening to calming music, I found myself in sort of a meditative state. I was interested to read, on the Dlectricity website, that the piece’s intention was to "invite viewers to assume a contemplative state.” To be able to create a graceful work of art while influencing the viewer’s mental state is not a simple task. However, Cuppetelli and Mendoza made it look easy. Around the perimeter of the piece, there was a buzz of people saying how cool and relaxing it was. Everyone was eager to take a turn to lay on the carpet. While laying down, even though there was noise coming from all around, everyone was silent and lost in thought. I loved how in::Sequence’s purpose was deeper than beauty or form, it was there to bring people closer and make them think.

Photoshop Tutorial
I used this photoshop tutorial while cropping out the cat body for my monster project. I wanted to crop it while keeping the furry texture but didn’t want to spend hours going around each individual hair.

Meet Zaniel. Named after an ancient angel who rules Mondays, Zaniel spends most of his time crying in the clouds--where do you think rain comes from? Crying babies. The skies do their best to cheer him up but he is quite persistent in throwing a constant tantrum. His diet consists of beetles and butterflies, which the skies catch and feed to him (cat-spider-baby, hybrids don’t have hands, obviously).

FIRST DRAFT PROJECT 2
There are a lot of elements I still need to add. I haven’t inserted a scanned or drawn image into my project yet and I would like to add a few more original photos. The coloring of the image is unfinished in that I want to make the scheme more cohesive and possibly add in more red tones. Also, I plan on adding more butterflies or plants in the background. I realize how weird this piece is and I'm unsure of whether to tone it down or run with it.

This is the inflatable bunny art installation titled Intrude by Amanda Parer at Dlectricity. These 7 meter tall bunnies were lit up from the inside with a glowing white light. There were 5 rabbits, each one with a unique pose. What I loved about this installation was the fact that you could get up close and personal with the bunnies and view them from any angle you pleased. Many people, including myself, were blown away at time it must have taken to cut out each individual piece of fabric and sew them together. It seems extremely difficult to create something that large while maintaining a cohesive shape and vision.
Intrude was a creative, interactive work of art that initially brought about a feeling of wonder and imagination. The peaceful and soft glow that these bunnies cast on the dark landscape caught my attention right away. Gazing up at these white giants made me wonder, why bunnies? I looked up this work on Dlectricity’s website and was surprised at the meaning behind it. Bunnies are ecologically destructive in Australia, Parer’s home, by causing a great imbalance to the countries endemic species. The size represents the “elephant in the room,” the problem being the ignored environmental impact these pests are creating. Reading this description instantly changed my perspective on Intrude. Rather than feeling inspired, I felt a sense of cynicism. Something beautiful and seemingly harmless can actually have very negative impact. Overall, I really liked how the meaning of this work was not something you could figure right away. It took time for my thoughts about this work to develop. Intrude’s irony and contradiction was creative, intriguing, and unique.
