The Mirror

I look in the mirror

And search for an old version of myself.

Before the scars,

Before I cut my hair so short you couldn't pull on it,

Before I tried to rearrange everything about my appearance that suggested vulnerability.

The mirror does not comply.

Instead,

I am confronted with a woman I do not yet know,

Rather than the child,

The adolescent I have mourned for.

The woman however provides an answer,

She tells me,
