[...] The train journey through France to Germany was quite pleasant. Alix [Queen Alexandra] kept her suite entertained and engaged everyone in conversation and playful banter. She was always full of fun on those occasions. When the train lurched after a particularly sharp turn during lunch one day, a platter of quails fell from a footman's hands dumping its contents onto Alix's head. One of these greasy birds got caught in the Queen's wig and could not be extricated. She stood up, covered in birds, sauce and parsley, with a quail still attached to her hair, and proceeded to walk about the carriage, proudly displaying herself to everyone. The Queen led the unbridled laughter because she knew everyone had had a good laugh at her expense.
