Eli was always up with the sun -- the park he ran in was quieter at that time of day -- but he couldn’t say the same for his neighbor. The dorm was buzzing with activity when he returned with a green smoothie for himself and a coffee for Mao, but he saw no sign of her. He knocked lightly on her door, it swinging open after a moment with Mao’s roommate standing in the doorway. She gave him an exasperated smile before slipping past him, leaving the door open so he could enter.
Setting down the drink tray on her desk, he crouched down next to her and gently shook her by the shoulder. “Mao?” he said, his voice small so as not to startle her. “Hey, you have your math class in an hour. You gotta get up now.”
